Executive Function Predictors Of Children's Talk, Jacqlyne D. Weber
Executive Function Predictors Of Children's Talk, Jacqlyne D. Weber
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Relatively few studies have investigated the relationship between executive functioning (EF) and language development, and even fewer have researched hot and cool EF as a predictor language development. This study is an investigation into the relationship between EF and language development in preschool aged children. More specifically, the ability for hot or cool EF to predict language, this will be the focus of the study. It was found that hot EF was a better predictor of language development in preschool aged children.

In an interview given a few weeks after the attacks of September 11, 2001, Jacques Derrida interrogates the nature of what is popularly called globalization. In his critique of current concepts of globalization, Derrida points out that the very processes of trade, communication, and transport are producing greater inequalities around the earth, and that these inequalities are spectacular, that is, that the very media essential to the process we call globalization make these inequalities vividly clear. The interview is a rich conspectus of the themes of Derrida's political thought, perhaps most penetrating in his thinking the concepts of the …
Nowhere, Anywhere, Everywhere: Location As Fiction And Function, Jonny Farrow
Nowhere, Anywhere, Everywhere: Location As Fiction And Function, Jonny Farrow
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This paper frames the idea of "location" as a social construction and uses the concepts of nowhere, anywhere, and everywhere to throw into relief the mediated ideologies that come to us through various institutions, such as museums and the media. The artists I focus on expose these ideologies through their use of fictional, narrative interventions into locations and conflate them with notions of place.
I propose that 'the real' itself is a social construction which is made actual through mots d'ordre (order words) as defined by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. These words serve to create realities, declaring a change …

Collaboration, Fieldwork, And Film, Lee Bidgood
ETSU Faculty Works
Excerpt: I never imagined that I would help produce a documentary film based on my ethnographic fieldwork. Meeting documentary filmmaker Shara Lange during new faculty orientation at the university where we were both newly hired eventually led to our film Banjo Romantika (2013)—a full-length feature based on my research on bluegrass music in the Czech Republic, in which I play a key role as writer, producer, and on-screen character. Taking part in this film project has led me to consider how film enriches relationships with field colleagues, providing new opportunities for teaching and learning. I find that collaborations like ours …
Virtue, Oppression, And Resistance Struggles, Trevor William Smith
Virtue, Oppression, And Resistance Struggles, Trevor William Smith
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation explores and develops an account of the moral obligation to engage in resistance struggles against oppression and it does so by situating oppression squarely within the framework of neo-Aristotelian virtue ethics. It is argued that when oppression is investigated through the lens of virtue ethics the harmful and damning nature of oppression must be understood as a substantial moral, not merely political, problem. In short, it is shown that oppression acts in a variety of ways as a barrier for the achievement of flourishing for the oppressed. Turning from, and building on, this investigative and largely descriptive analysis …
Determinants Of Systemic Risk And Information Dissemination, Marcelo Bianconi, Xiaxin Hua, Chih Ming Tan
Determinants Of Systemic Risk And Information Dissemination, Marcelo Bianconi, Xiaxin Hua, Chih Ming Tan
Economics & Finance Faculty Publications
We introduce a measure of information dissemination for the determination of systemic risk, print-media consumer pessimism, controlling for VIX volatility. VIX volatility has a significant direct impact upon systemic risk of financial firms under distress, and consumer pessimism does impact upon firm's financial stress via the externality of other firm's financial stress. In the internet bubble of the 1990s, pessimism predicts larger systemic risk in the whole period of exuberance while the VIX predicts a sharp larger systemic risk in the height of the bubble. Our evidence suggests that consumer pessimism might be dominated by the VIX when predicting systemic …
Hopeful Losers? A Moral Case For Mixed Electoral Systems, Loren King
Hopeful Losers? A Moral Case For Mixed Electoral Systems, Loren King
Political Science Faculty Publications
Liberal democracies encourage citizen participation and protect our freedoms, yet these regimes elect politicians and decide important issues with electoral and legislative systems that are less inclusive than other arrangements. Some citizens inevitably have more influence than others. Is this a problem? Yes, because similarly just but more inclusive systems are possible. Political theorists and philosophers should be arguing for particular institutional forms, with particular geographies, consistent with justice.
Les démocraties libérales encouragent la participation citoyenne et protègent nos libertés. Pourtant, ces régimes élisent des politiciens et décident de problèmes importants via les systèmes électoral et législatif, qui sont moins …
Estimating Effectiveness Of Twitter Messages With A Personalized Machine Learning Approach, Xunhu Sun
Estimating Effectiveness Of Twitter Messages With A Personalized Machine Learning Approach, Xunhu Sun
Theses and Dissertations
In Twitter, many aspects of retweeting behavior, which is the most effective indicator of spreading effectiveness of the tweet, have been researched, such as whether a reader will retweet a certain tweet or not. However, the total number of retweets of the tweet, which is the quantitative measure of quality, has not been well addressed by existing work. To estimate the number of retweets and associated factors, this paper proposes a procedure to develop a personalized model for one author. The training data comes from the author’s past tweets. We propose 3 types of new features based on the contents …
Openness To The "Other" During A Summer Language Study Abroad In Madrid, Spain: Six Case Studies, Samuel Cox
Openness To The "Other" During A Summer Language Study Abroad In Madrid, Spain: Six Case Studies, Samuel Cox
Dissertations (1934 -)
The purpose of this study was to explore the interaction of summer language study abroad students in Madrid, Spain, with a cultural and linguistic "Other," and to examine the resulting evolution in those participants' openness to that Other. Gordon Allport's four optimal conditions for prejudice reduction in intergroup contact theory provided the framework for this analysis. The student in a language study abroad context is both a linguistic and cultural minority, an experience manifested in multiple daily interactions that potentially affect openness to the linguistic and cultural Other. As such, qualitative data were drawn from six participants via interviews during …

Increasing Emotion Word Productions In Children With Language Impairment With A Social Communication Intervention, Madelane Kate Dixon
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the efficacy of a social communication intervention in increasing the emotion word productions in school-aged children with language impairment (LI). The study had a multiple baseline single subject design in which 5 children between the ages of 6 and 11 received 20 intervention sessions, each lasting 20 minutes. Intervention activities included reading and discussing children's books, enacting the stories using toys, and journal writing to reflect on experiences in each session. Emotion word productions during intervention sessions were coded for total productions within the categories of happiness, anger, sadness, fear, surprise, and disgust. Productions were also coded …

The Effect Of Various Word Treatments On Chinese Vocabulary Comprehension During Multimedia Language Learning, Jeongwoon Kim
The Effect Of Various Word Treatments On Chinese Vocabulary Comprehension During Multimedia Language Learning, Jeongwoon Kim
Theses and Dissertations
The current study investigated the effect of viewing various types of word definitions-dictionary, glossed, and annotated definitions-on Chinese learners' vocabulary comprehension during video-based language learning. A total of 53 advanced Chinese learner participants were given access to various randomized word definitions while viewing the subtitled videos used in the experiment. Results showed that learners recalled words for which they viewed definitions significantly better after the experiment than before. The viewing of dictionary, glossed, or annotated definitions yielded comparable levels of word comprehension. In situations where learners did not view word definitions; however, word comprehension was not significantly higher on the …
Terminological Mediation In Information Technology And Related Fields, Jessica Smith Richards
Terminological Mediation In Information Technology And Related Fields, Jessica Smith Richards
Theses and Dissertations
Terminological dissonance is created by the inherent ambiguity of natural language and compounded by ontological specialization efforts within fields. Terminological dissonance creates high-risk miscommunications in two key areas: within Information Technology as a singular domain, and also between IT and other fields in interdisciplinary projects. A comprehensive literature review revealed a lack of previous effort to acknowledge or solve problems of terminological dissonance within Information Technology. This research provides a comprehensive overview and definition of the terminology mediation space as it relates to Information Technology and adjacent fields. An analysis and verification of the contents and implementation of the terminology …
Purposivism In The Executive Branch: How Agencies Interpret Statutes, Kevin M. Stack
Purposivism In The Executive Branch: How Agencies Interpret Statutes, Kevin M. Stack
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
After decades of debate, the lines of distinction between textualism and purposivism have been carefully drawn with respect to the judicial task of statutory interpretation. Far less attention has been devoted to the question of how executive branch officials approach statutory interpretation. While scholars have contrasted agencies interpretive practices from those of courts, they have not yet developed a theory of agency statutory interpretation. This Article develops a purposivist theory of agency statutory interpretation on the ground that regulatory statutes oblige agencies to implement the statutes they administer in that manner. Regulatory statutes not only grant powers but also impose …

Do Facebook Status Updates Reflect Subjective Well-Being?, Pan Liu, William Tov, Michal Kosinski, David J. Stillwell, Lin Qiu
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Nowadays, millions of people around the world use social networking sites to express everyday thoughts and feelings. Many researchers have tried to make use of social media to study users' online behaviors and psychological states. However, previous studies show mixed results about whether self-generated contents on Facebook reflect users' subjective well-being (SWB). This study analyzed Facebook status updates to determine the extent to which users' emotional expression predicted their SWBspecifically their self-reported satisfaction with life. It was found that positive emotional expressions on Facebook did not correlate with life satisfaction, whereas negative emotional expressions within the past 9-10 months (but …

The Linguistic Features Of Deceptive Speech, Jared Albrecht, Michal Temkin Martinez (Mentor)
The Linguistic Features Of Deceptive Speech, Jared Albrecht, Michal Temkin Martinez (Mentor)
Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research
Research on deception within the field of linguistics has been largely focused upon the lexical aspect of lies. However, while the words a liar uses may reveal the lie in some cases, there are certain prosodic features of speech (e.g. pitch or tempo) that may be correlated to lying. This study focuses on these features in an attempt to decode deception. In an experiment with a representative sample of a university campus population, participants were asked to lie for science in a game of ‘Two Truths and a Lie’. Each participant’s speech was recorded while they constructed spontaneous truths and …
Identity And Identification: The Individual In The Time Of Networked Governance, Nishant Shah
Identity And Identification: The Individual In The Time Of Networked Governance, Nishant Shah
Socio-Legal Review
The rise of digital technologies has foregrounded the individual as the unit of network and database governance. The focus on the quantified self and data subjects has resulted in an increased attention on the rights, responsibilities, and safeguards to protect the individual at the centre of data mining and regulation practices. There is an increased anxiety about how the existing safeguards and policies are inadequate to both activate and to protect the individual in the face of ubiquitous and pervasive computational practices. This paper argues that attempts at trying to extend the fold of existing policies and frameworks are inadequate …
(In)Articulating The Specter: Queer Communicative Resistance In The Hysterical Supernatural, Clare Stuber
(In)Articulating The Specter: Queer Communicative Resistance In The Hysterical Supernatural, Clare Stuber
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Using discourse analysis, this paper investigates the unresolved nature of a recently documented case of “conversion disorder” or “mass psychogenic illness” experienced by a group of teenage girls in Le Roy, New York. I argue we can see this contemporary embodiment of hysteria as a form of queer communicative resistance, existing in a discursive space called the hysterical supernatural. This new terminology – an alternative to the one-dimensionality of conventional medical models – looks toward the crucial intersection of queer theory, antiracist feminisms, disability studies, and trauma studies. The construction of hysteria becomes an important framework for investigating nuances of …
