Gender Representation In English And Arabic Foreign Language Textbooks In Iran: A Comparative Approach, Mitra Baghdadi, Ali Rezaei

Journal of International Women's Studies

Female educational attainment in Iran has been increasing since the establishment of the Islamic Republic in Iran. This study investigated whether this female superiority is reflected or supported in Iranian textbooks. The study investigated how gender roles are represented in Iranian EFL (English as a Foreign Language) and AFL (Arabic as a Foreign Language) textbooks. “Criteria for Analysis of the Equality of Gender Representation” by Rifkin, was used for content analysis. These criteria are grouped into two main categories of ‘pictorial’ and ‘verbal’. The results showed that with no exception and in all criteria, males were represented significantly more than …

Academic Language In Book Clubs, Tanya Marie Schuh-Modelli Jul 2015

Academic Language In Book Clubs, Tanya Marie Schuh-Modelli

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

Book clubs are increasingly used by teachers to help raise ELL literacy levels. Yet, there has been little research on whether this tool actually contributes to improved oral language proficiency. The research question is, after being taught the academic language needed to ask and answer higher order questions, how well are students able to ask and answer questions? This study examines to what extent students are able to engage in higher-order questioning after receiving direct instructional support through book clubs. The methods employ anecdotal notes, transcripts of student conversations, and student written work to assess how students can discuss text …

I was fortunate to grow up near New Orleans, Louisiana, a city overflowing in culture and history. Growing up there taught me about the influence of architecture on a place and how it comes into existence out of the surrounding context. Memphis, Tennessee, like New Orleans, is a city rich in culture and history, but due that every place that makes up the earth’s landscape is different in some way, Memphis is another city along the Mississippi River with unique features that set it apart from other places around the globe. The thesis investigates those unique features and how architecture …

The Role Of Motivation In Second Language Acquisition: The Critical Constructs Of L2 Motivation, Nicholas Cross Jul 2015

The Role Of Motivation In Second Language Acquisition: The Critical Constructs Of L2 Motivation, Nicholas Cross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

L2 motivation, as it has been defined in Robert Gardner's composite construct of the integrative motive, has been determined to be essential in the acquisition of a second language. Though some modern researchers have reconceptualized the construct, they have nonetheless reaffirmed its critical components through their own studies. This study explored the phenomenological orientation of the perception of the importance of L2 motivation as understood my 20 ESL teachers with at least three years of teaching experience through four questions: 1. How important to student language learning success (proficiency) do experienced ESL teachers consider motivation to be? 2. What are …

Between Language And Time: Yale School's Theoretical Generation And Its Location In The Intellectual History, Dengyun Dai Jul 2015

Between Language And Time: Yale School's Theoretical Generation And Its Location In The Intellectual History, Dengyun Dai

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The Yale School constructed a new mode of poetics research through its departure from the New Criticism and imbibitions of Continental thoughts, and its contribution to poetics lies in its generative poetics that shifts the focus of literary studies from the scientificalness of literary criticism, the literariness of literary texts and the factualness of literary history to the generation of literary criticism, literary text and literary history. The fundamental reason behind the Yale School's achievement lies in the fact that the Yale School theorists, under the context of linguistic turn and time philosophy turn in modern Western philosophy, with their …

Speak English, Pray In Spanish: Forming Cultural Bridges Between Hispanic Teens And Parents, Dulce Flores Jul 2015

Speak English, Pray In Spanish: Forming Cultural Bridges Between Hispanic Teens And Parents, Dulce Flores

LMU Theses and Dissertations

Within Hispanic families there is a growing gap – a disconnection between Hispanic immigrants and their U.S. born and raised children. The cultural gap formed between these two groups has caused many U.S. Hispanic teens to disconnect from “Catholic” as a marker of identity. In order to help Hispanic teens establish a Catholic identity, the local church community needs to help families bridge the gap between teens, parents, and the Church itself. Through the exploration of mestizaje and the incorporation of lo cotidiano and accompaniment in catequesis familiar, parents in conjunction with the Church community can help engage teens in …

The Legal Form Of Liberalism: A Study Of Riparian And Nuisance Law In Nineteenth Century Ohio, E. P. Krauss Jul 2015

The Legal Form Of Liberalism: A Study Of Riparian And Nuisance Law In Nineteenth Century Ohio, E. P. Krauss

Akron Law Review

This essay tests the foregoing interpretation by examining the nineteenth century Ohio decisions in the fields of riparian and nuisance law. This data, as shall be shown, tends to confirm the conclusions of earlier scholarship. In the third and fourth parts of this essay two decisions, one from the very beginning of the period under study," and one from near the end, will be considered. These two decisions help identify the developmental context within which judicial law-making passed from a creative to an elaborative phase by illustrating judicial attitudes toward protecting the public interest in 1831 and again in 1892.

Ohio Jury Interrogatories: Civil Rule 49(B), Joyce J. George, Michael A. Partlow Jul 2015

Ohio Jury Interrogatories: Civil Rule 49(B), Joyce J. George, Michael A. Partlow

Akron Law Review

Ohio's Civ. R. 49(B) permits parties to submit interrogatories to the jury in order to test the jury's thinking in rendering a verdict. Unlike traditional jury interrogatories, the rule limits interrogatories to subject matter normally associated with the special verdict. For centuries the use of the special verdict has plagued the legal community with confusion. The practitioner, the jury and the trial judge have each had difficulty in a variety of ways when the special verdict is involved.

Death Of The Family: What's Become Of The Parents And The Children, Ronald C. Griffin Jul 2015

Death Of The Family: What's Become Of The Parents And The Children, Ronald C. Griffin

Akron Law Review

If something isn't done quickly, America will become the first nation in history in which elderly people enjoy more security than children.

To that end I recommend that family obligations be analyzed in contractual terms. If the law encompasses what courts do with specific conduct, contract law can moderate parental behavior through vehicles such as family counselling. It can sort out family duties and supply legal rationales for resolving family disputes in a constructive way. This article begins with a background discussion - history, literature and insights - then addresses the law and legal analysis.

Automatic Question Generation And Student Answer Assessment In Dialogue-Based Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Nobal B. Niraula Jul 2015

Automatic Question Generation And Student Answer Assessment In Dialogue-Based Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Nobal B. Niraula

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Dialogue-based Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) have already proven to be very effective at inducing learning gains in students. These systems are guided by dialog scripts, the heart of many dialog systems, for the interactions with students. The scripts typically consist of a list of questions and corresponding ideal answers. In most ITSs, such scripts are manually crafted from instructional task descriptions. Such manual efforts not only cost more in terms of time and effort but also set a bottleneck in the scalability of the systems. Another major challenge they face is to automatically assess student answers with respect to the …

Legal Agreement, Andrew Tutt Jul 2015

Legal Agreement, Andrew Tutt

Akron Law Review

This Article grapples with the question of what it means to agree about what the law is. First, it shows that the question of what it means to “agree about the law” invites us to consider many different kinds of agreement and disagreement we might have about what the law is. Second, it shows that without selecting one of these kinds of agreement, we cannot speak intelligibly about whether we agree or disagree. Third, it explains that this failure to choose is a source of much confusion and apparent disagreement between competing philosophers and philosophies of law. Fourth, it argues …

"Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe": Disestablishment Of Paternity, Vanessa S. Browne-Barbour Jul 2015

"Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe": Disestablishment Of Paternity, Vanessa S. Browne-Barbour

Akron Law Review

Part II of this Article provides a general historical overview of paternity rules. Part III summarizes the laws addressing paternity and its disestablishment in the United States and the European Union. It discusses related cases from the high courts of both jurisdictions, which highlight the broad range of issues, interests, and consequences associated with issues of paternity. Part IV considers the adverse effects of disestablishment of paternity on a child. It recommends nationally mandated genetic testing at birth or soon thereafter. This would eliminate altogether the need for paternity disestablishment procedures, thereby avoiding their harmful effects. Part V acknowledges that …

Human-Machine Cooperation In Large-Scale Multimedia Retrieval: A Survey, Kimiaki Shirahama, Marcin Grzegorzek, Bipin Indurkhya

The Journal of Problem Solving

Large-Scale Multimedia Retrieval(LSMR) is the task to fast analyze a large amount of multimedia data like images or videos and accurately find the ones relevant to a certain semantic meaning. Although LSMR has been investigated for more than two decades in the fields of multimedia processing and computer vision, a more interdisciplinary approach is necessary to develop an LSMR system that is really meaningful for humans. To this end, this paper aims to stimulate attention to the LSMR problem from diverse research fields. By explaining basic terminologies in LSMR, we first survey several representative methods in chronological order. This …

A Journey Through Reality. Towards An Anthropo-Semiotics Of Travel Representation: Literature, Photography, Cinema. 1861-1961, Benoît Mauchamp

Open Access Dissertations

This study inquires about the aesthetics of reality at the edge of modernity, through different media and from a traveling perspective. Based on a definition of the journey as an experience of reality and a "decentering" of the mind, it examines the works of three subjective and Parisian realities and proposes a comparative media analysis, ranging from the preface to the Spleen de Paris, written in 1861, to the release of Chronique d’un été in 1961. Through a close analysis of Baudelaire’s poetry, Atget’s photography and Rouch’s cinematography, I approach these narratives as textual and visual productions that foreground the …

Teachers' Perceptions Of Teaching Reading And Writing Through The Use Of Play-Based Developmentally Appropriate Practice And Constructivist Approaches, Meredith Krisell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Many teachers in Arkansas have been bombarded with Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and are expected to produce instruction that is both meaningful and authentic. Through the implementation of CCSS, the Arkansas Department of Education announced that 26 school districts were classified as academically distressed. Therefore, it will be important for educators to utilize novel approaches that will assist learners in becoming successful in all content areas. The purpose of this study was to examine six teachers' perspectives regarding play-based developmentally appropriate practice and constructivist approaches when teaching reading and writing. Qualitative research methods were utilized, including interviews, observations, field …

Applying Systems Theory As A Lens On Teacher And Student Perceptions Of Assessment And Feedback In An Intensive English Program, Thomas A. Germain

MA TESOL Collection

The goal of this project was to apply systems theory, or more generally, systems thinking as a lens on the perceptions of teachers, students, and administrators who work together at an intensive English program (IEP). This goal necessitated a two-part project: a review of pertinent literature on systems theory and a limited qualitative study situated at the IEP. Sixteen participants, including seven teachers (more than half of the current faculty), two teacher/administrators, and seven students from different levels within the program, were invited to participate. The primary focus of the study was on participants’ awareness of and attitudes about two …

Emergent Motor-Vocal Coordination In Pre-Linguistic Infants, Sarah M. Sanborn Jul 2015

Emergent Motor-Vocal Coordination In Pre-Linguistic Infants, Sarah M. Sanborn

Doctoral Dissertations

In adults, speech and gesture are very much intertwined with each other, but it remains unclear how this connection forms in the developing infant. Iverson and Thelen (1999) proposed that the speech-gesture linkage emerges between 6-9 months, when rhythmic motor movements and babbling are at their peak; however, few published studies have tested the speech-gesture theory. A major purpose of the current study is to provide support for the Iverson and Thelen theory using longitudinal data; in addition, this study explores how posture and social context affect motor-vocal coordination. Fifteen infants were videotaped in their homes at 6, 7, 8, …

How Does Self-Presentation Concern Relate To Language Use In Online Social Networking?, David M. Kovaz Jul 2015

How Does Self-Presentation Concern Relate To Language Use In Online Social Networking?, David M. Kovaz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Millions of people worldwide use online social networking sites (SNSs) such as Facebook and Twitter for interpersonal interaction and self-presentation. Theories of computer-mediated communication suggest that SNSs offer unique affordances and pose complex challenges to self-presentation (particularly in audience management) compared to face-to-face settings. One of the most fundamental ways in which people present themselves to others is through the use of language. The goal of the present work is to better understand language use in online self-presentation by exploring how the degree of concern people have about their self-presentation relates to their word choices in SNS posts (i.e., status …

Revisiting The Afterlife: The Inadequacies Of "Heaven" And "Hell", Christopher P. Davis Jul 2015

Revisiting The Afterlife: The Inadequacies Of "Heaven" And "Hell", Christopher P. Davis

Fidei et Veritatis: The Liberty University Journal of Graduate Research

This paper deals with some of the ambiguities that are associated with the intermediate and final states after death. Whereas many in the church have dismissed these concepts as myths of the ancients, this discussion shows how the grounding of such beliefs in the Hebrew mindset was the key to Jesus’ own teachings about the afterlife. The argument begins by developing a biblical anthropology over against the modern naturalistic anthropologies that have largely dominated the philosophical and theological scenes. From here we look at the Old Testament concept of the afterlife, and how the modern view that the Hebrews were …

The Gradient Effect Of Context On Language Switching And Lexical Access In Bilingual Production, Daniel J. Olson Jul 2015

The Gradient Effect Of Context On Language Switching And Lexical Access In Bilingual Production, Daniel J. Olson

School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

Previous research on bilingual language switching costs has demonstrated asymmetrical switch costs, driven primarily by language dominance, such that switches into a moredominant language incur significantly greater reaction time delays than switches into a less dominant language. While such studies have generally relied on a fixed ratio of switch to non-switch tokens, it is clear that bilinguals operate not in a fixed ratio, but along a naturally occurring bilingual continuum of modes or contexts. Bridging the concepts of language switching and language context, the current study examines language switching costs through a cued-picture naming study with variable contexts or modes. …

Interrogating Views On The Evaluation Of The Quality Of Pre-Primary Education In Tanzania: A Stakeholders’ Perspective, Pambas Basil Tandika Dr Jul 2015

Interrogating Views On The Evaluation Of The Quality Of Pre-Primary Education In Tanzania: A Stakeholders’ Perspective, Pambas Basil Tandika Dr

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper reports the findings of a study on the evaluation of the quality of education in Tanzania, conducted amidst worries that the quality of education has slumped as learning in pre-primary class is different from that of other education levels. In determining the quality of pre-primary education, a qualitative descriptive design was employed, involving pre-primary school teachers, parents, primary school supervisors, curriculum developers and educational policy-makers who were purposively selected. The study found that self- and external evaluations were means through which the evaluation of the quality was conducted. It further determined teacher-related criteria, the learning environment, and learners’ …
