Culturally Responsive Math Curriculum: First Grade Dual Language Immersion Addition Unit, Alia R. Morales Towns

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The results of state educational testing show achievement gaps between students of color and white students in many states. This gap is also found in the testing data for school districts that implement dual language immersion using English and Spanish. Research demonstrates that curricula that incorporate theories and practices related to equity, social justice and culturally and linguistically responsive instruction can support efforts to close the gap in achievement. The purpose of this project was to create a standards-based, culturally and linguistically responsive mathematics unit of study, with a focus on social justice, to begin to close the racial achievement …

Bringing Frames Into Focus: Reading Middle English Literature, Jeffery Stoyanoff Aug 2015

Bringing Frames Into Focus: Reading Middle English Literature, Jeffery Stoyanoff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Middle English readers were critical readers who expected rhetorically-sophisticated texts. Middle English authors, who were themselves trained as readers first, acknowledge such a readership by using a variety of framing devices within their texts. The reading techniques that students applied to classical texts in the classroom were beginning to be applied to the then-modern texts of Middle English authors. Authors use these generically-situated framing devices to play with readers’ expectations and to open up their texts for a number of possible interpretations. I elucidate the possible rhetorical moves authors make using framing devices in their texts in response to this …

Perceptions Of Esl Teachers’ Roles Within School Communities, Angela Carolyn Froemming Aug 2015

Perceptions Of Esl Teachers’ Roles Within School Communities, Angela Carolyn Froemming

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this project was to examine how school personnel perceive the role of the ESL teacher within elementary school communities. Electronic surveys, individual interviews and a focus group were used to collect data from ESL teachers, mainstream teachers and administrators. Results showed that while ESL teachers see themselves as language teachers, mainstream teachers see them primarily as classroom support, suggesting that the role of language within content instruction is not clearly understood by those outside the field of ESL. As a result, the expectations of the ESL teacher vary greatly within the school community. Recommendations for clarifying the …

Integrating Human Culture, Community, And Sense Of Place Into An Existing High School Environmental Studies Curriculum, Kathy Allen Kline

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

This capstone addresses challenges faced by a first year high school teacher on an interdisciplinary team integrating social studies into an environmental studies curriculum. After exploring literature in biodiversity, biocultural diversity, and place-based education, the author determines that the existing curriculum can be enhanced to make stronger connections between people and the places already being studied, including the local community. To that end, this paper presents a sub-unit, developed using the Understanding by Design ® model, that seeks to integrate human culture, community, and sense of place into an environmental studies curriculum. The sub-unit includes six weeks of lessons to …

Is Big Brother Playing Fair? Exploring Effects Of Perceived Nepotism In Public Institutions On Trust In Strangers, David Amon Neequaye

Lingnan Theses

Trust has proven to be a vital social capital. It has been implicated in a myriad of socially beneficial initiatives. While trust vested in familiar others remain important, trust extended to strangers is crucial to the continued development of social capital. This is because such interaction, though risky at times, forms a springboard to untapped opportunities. Using a multi-round trust game and self-report assessments the present study explored explanations for observed cultural differences in trust in strangers. Data was drawn from university students in Ghana and Hong Kong. Factor analysis showed that self-report trust in strangers was associated with trust …

Pleonastic Merger, Tsuyoshi Sawada Aug 2015

Pleonastic Merger, Tsuyoshi Sawada

Doctoral Dissertations

The thesis examines the structure of Japanese between tense and the main predicate, focusing on the order of the heads of the relevant phrases, appearing at the right edge of the sentence. This part of structure is superficially rather chaotic, and appears to raise serious problems for the assumption that there is a fixed universal phrase structure hierarchy, i.e. the phrases between tense and the predicate in Japanese appear to have a more complicated distribution than what can be readily explained merely by adopting fixed, universal selectional properties for the heads in question. This thesis shows that once certain factors …

Performance In The Chaordic Age: By Design Or By Destiny?, Raymond L. Forbes Aug 2015

Performance In The Chaordic Age: By Design Or By Destiny?, Raymond L. Forbes

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This paper discusses the challenge of performance in an age characterized by high levels of both organizational and environmental uncertainty. Today, business, not-for-profit, and governmental institutions all find themselves besieged by difficult-to-predict periods of disorder and relative certitude. A new structural form, called the chaordic organization, has arisen as one means of operating in such a turbulent and indeterminate environment. This article will consider the chaos-certainty question, examine the concepts of performance and potential, deliberate whether performance can be influenced by calculated design measures, and look at current thinking related to motivation and its relationship to organizational performance. Additionally, a …
