Emw 2015: Continuity And Change In The Jewish Communities Of The Early Eighteenth Century, The Ohio State University

Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History

Volume 12: Continuity and Change in the Jewish Communities of the Early Eighteenth Century, Ohio State University, Columbus, August 17-19, 2015

The 2015 Early Modern Workshop on “Continuity and Change in the Jewish Communities in the Early Eighteenth Century” was held at Ohio State University.

Between the late seventeenth century and the middle of the eighteenth century, much of European Jewry (and elements within Ottoman Jewry as well) appear to have shifted from a generally traditional and religious way of life to a way of life that embraced non-traditional and/or non-halakhic practices and fashions. There were no great intellectual or …

Transfer Effect Of Speech-Sound Learning On Auditory-Motor Processing Of Perceived Vocal Pitch Errors, Zhaocong Chen, Francis C.K. Wong, Jeffery A. Jones, Weifeng Li, Peng Liu, Xi Chen, Hanjun Liu Aug 2015

Transfer Effect Of Speech-Sound Learning On Auditory-Motor Processing Of Perceived Vocal Pitch Errors, Zhaocong Chen, Francis C.K. Wong, Jeffery A. Jones, Weifeng Li, Peng Liu, Xi Chen, Hanjun Liu

Psychology Faculty Publications

Speech perception and production are intimately linked. There is evidence that speech motor learning results in changes to auditory processing of speech. Whether speech motor control benefits from perceptual learning in speech, however, remains unclear. This event-related potential study investigated whether speech-sound learning can modulate the processing of feedback errors during vocal pitch regulation. Mandarin speakers were trained to perceive five Thai lexical tones while learning to associate pictures with spoken words over 5 days. Before and after training, participants produced sustained vowel sounds while they heard their vocal pitch feedback unexpectedly perturbed. As compared to the pre-training session, the …

Confronting 'Kymlicka's Dilemma': Settler Voting Rights, Indigenous Representation And The 1998-99 Electoral Reapportionment In Canada's Northwest Territories, Aaron Spitzer Aug 2015

Confronting 'Kymlicka's Dilemma': Settler Voting Rights, Indigenous Representation And The 1998-99 Electoral Reapportionment In Canada's Northwest Territories, Aaron Spitzer

Arctic and Northern Studies

"Settler colonialism" presents a vexing challenge to voting rights theory and praxis in liberal-democratic states. I call this challenge "Kymlicka's dilemma," after Will Kymlicka, the political theorist who has led contemporary discourse on "minority nation" rights. As Kymlicka observed, members of a state's dominant cultural nation, or staatsvolk, may, by exercising universal mobility rights, numerically "swamp," and then, by using universal voting rights, democratically dominate, an Indigenous minority nation in its homeland. To prevent this, an Indigenous minority nation may seek to exercise group-based voting protections, such as guaranteed representation. Where "Kymlicka's dilemma" arises - i.e., where minority group-differentiated voting …

Extractive Leviathan: The Role Of The Government In The Relationships Between Oil And Gas Industries And Indigenous Communities In The Arctic Regions Of Canada, United States And Russia, Evgeniia Sidorova, Евгения Сидорова Aug 2015

Extractive Leviathan: The Role Of The Government In The Relationships Between Oil And Gas Industries And Indigenous Communities In The Arctic Regions Of Canada, United States And Russia, Evgeniia Sidorova, Евгения Сидорова

Arctic and Northern Studies

This comparative research analyzes the extent to which the governments of Canada, the United States and Russia affect the relationships between the petroleum extractive industries and Indigenous peoples of the Arctic in order to protect Indigenous peoples from the negative impacts of oil and gas extraction. The hypothesis of this study is that the government can protect Indigenous communities only by providing for their participation in decision-making processes about oil and gas development. The comparative analysis showed that in comparison with Canada and the United States, Russia has the worst legal protection of Indigenous peoples in petroleum-extractive regions. The recognition …

Once Upon A Time: An Anthropological Exploration Of Gwich'in Stories (Man In The Moon; The Old Woman And The Brushman), Monika Frey Aug 2015

Once Upon A Time: An Anthropological Exploration Of Gwich'in Stories (Man In The Moon; The Old Woman And The Brushman), Monika Frey

Anthropology

This MA thesis research focuses on Gwich'in stories. It seeks to better understand how similar the versions of two stories are when each is parsed into units representing themes within the stories. Drawing in part on Lévi-Strauss's structural study of myth and applying aspects of it to the Gwich'in stories discussed in this research, I will demonstrate that several versions of a story contain identical themes, though levels of detail vary. This occurs when (1) a story is told by the same storyteller at different times, and (2) when a story is told by two or more storytellers. While each …

A History And Analysis Of The Efforts Of The Ahtna People Of South-Central Alaska To Secure A Priority To Hunt Moose On Their Ancestral Lands, Eric Schacht

Natural Resources

The purpose of this study is to document the decades-long struggle of the Ahtna people of south-central Alaska to secure the priority to hunt moose in their ancestral lands. The study details the changes in moose hunting regulations in Game Management Unit 13 from the first permit hunt in 1960 to the current era as well as the changes in the number of hunters, number of moose harvests, and success of hunters by area of residence (local vs. non-local). This study summarizes changes in regulations regarding rural preference for subsistence hunters and the court cases challenging those provisions. It outlines …

Utilizing an analysis of each allied states military capabilities, spending on defense, and public support for United States regional …

Consistencies And Inconsistencies Between Teachers’ Beliefs And Practices, Mohammad Tamimy Aug 2015

Consistencies And Inconsistencies Between Teachers’ Beliefs And Practices, Mohammad Tamimy

The Qualitative Report

This instrumental-comparative qualitative case study attempts to investigate the relations between teachers’ beliefs and classroom practices. For this purpose, five Iranian EFL teachers from three private language institutes were interviewed for their beliefs. Then, their classroom practices were observed and videotaped. The data were analyzed using the constant comparative method around common categories, which were identified as distinctive features of teachers’ beliefs; these same themes were then compared with their practices. The data for each case were also compared with the others so that possible causes of the inconsistencies could be traced. Based on the causes, some suggestions for teacher …

Terjemahan Sastera Bahasa Rusia-Bahasa Melayu: Cabaran Dan Cara Penyelesaian, V.A. Pogadev Aug 2015

Terjemahan Sastera Bahasa Rusia-Bahasa Melayu: Cabaran Dan Cara Penyelesaian, V.A. Pogadev

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Online Modeling And Tuning Of Parallel Stream Processing Systems, Jonathan Curtis Beard Aug 2015

Online Modeling And Tuning Of Parallel Stream Processing Systems, Jonathan Curtis Beard

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Writing performant computer programs is hard. Code for high performance applications is profiled, tweaked, and re-factored for months specifically for the hardware for which it is to run. Consumer application code doesn't get the benefit of endless massaging that benefits high performance code, even though heterogeneous processor environments are beginning to resemble those in more performance oriented arenas. This thesis offers a path to performant, parallel code (through stream processing) which is tuned online and automatically adapts to the environment it is given. This approach has the potential to reduce the tuning costs associated with high performance code and brings …

Counseling Training For Audiology Students: Using Standardized Patients, Catherine Schroy Aug 2015

Counseling Training For Audiology Students: Using Standardized Patients, Catherine Schroy

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The implementation of Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) has resulted in earlier diagnosis of hearing loss in children. Research shows that early diagnosis of hearing loss results in better outcomes in speech and language, socio-emotional, and cognitive development. Early diagnosis, however, often comes as a surprise to parents of newborns. When parents are told their child has a hearing loss, it is often before they have been able to observe behaviors that would lead to the suspicion of hearing loss. Parents are usually told about the hearing loss diagnosis by an audiologist and are often dissatisfied with how the news …

Transformation Of Sympathies: Gendered Mediation Of Jordanian Education Reform For A Knowledge Economy, Rebecca Hodges Aug 2015

Transformation Of Sympathies: Gendered Mediation Of Jordanian Education Reform For A Knowledge Economy, Rebecca Hodges

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

In Jordan, teaching is widely considered “the best job for a woman” because it is accommodating and culturally appropriate for a wife and mother. Public secondary schools and comprehensive (K-12) schools in Jordan are predominantly gender-segregated, with female teachers and staff serving as models of professionalism and womanhood for generations of young girls. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan faces rising youth unemployment and pressures for democratization, and has responded with the explicitly transformational Education Reform for the Knowledge Economy (ERFKE) to overhaul the centralized public education system. ERFKE’s curricular goals include multilingualism, technological fluency, democratic participation, cooperation and teamwork, critical …

Parent Involvement In Education And College Planning For African American High School Students, Jennifer Threlfall Aug 2015

Parent Involvement In Education And College Planning For African American High School Students, Jennifer Threlfall

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Parent involvement is critical for students’ success in high school and in accessing college, especially in low-income and minority families. However, many schools have failed to engage low-income African American parents, thereby contributing to a popular narrative of uninvolved and uninterested parents. Traditional models of parent involvement have favored a narrow range of activities undertaken by white and middle class families and do not account for the wider social and cultural context in which parenting occurs. The purpose of this qualitative study was therefore to investigate (1) caregiver and adolescent perceptions of parent involvement in education and college planning for …

Two Activities For Multlingual Students: Learning In Monolingual Classrooms, David Schwarzer, Christian Acosta Aug 2015

Two Activities For Multlingual Students: Learning In Monolingual Classrooms, David Schwarzer, Christian Acosta

Journal of Multilingual Education Research

The purpose of this article is to re-conceptualize the role of the monolingual teacher in mainstream K-12 classrooms in the United States who work with students who are mostly multilingual and transnational. The proposed role for monolingual teachers is to incorporate at least some of the resources available in students’ native languages, even if they do not have a working knowledge of those languages. To illustrate how this can be achieved the authors showcase two practical activities that can be used in mainstream classrooms to spark discussions about multilingualism and multilingual literacy. The activities are designed to promote the maintenance …

The Psychological Impact Of English Language Immersion On Elementary Age English Language Learners, Elena B. Parra, Carol A. Evans, Todd Fletcher, Mary C. Combs

Journal of Multilingual Education Research

To date, most studies about English language learners (ELLs) in Structured English Immersion (SEI) classrooms in the state of Arizona have focused on ELLs’ lack of English acquisition in one year, a time frame expected by Arizona policymakers, as well as their lagging academic progress. While these studies almost uniformly have surfaced educational and policy concerns about the effectiveness of SEI, the debate about this approach has been marked by a lack of attention to research addressing the non-academic ramifications of enforcing this model on children who speak or understand little or no English. One relatively unexamined consequence of the …

Ready For La Escuela: School Readiness And The Languages Of Instruction In Kindergarten, Zoila Tazi Phd Aug 2015

Ready For La Escuela: School Readiness And The Languages Of Instruction In Kindergarten, Zoila Tazi Phd

Journal of Multilingual Education Research

School readiness has captured our attention. Across the country, policymakers, politicians, advocates, educators, and community members are forging alliances to increase children’s access to the kinds of early childhood experiences that will best prepare them for success in school. At the same time, census figures indicate that the child population in the United States is changing and young Latinos account for most of that change (O’Hare, 2011).

As a population, Latinos experience greater rates of poverty and other risk factors that adversely affect school readiness (Ackerman & Tazi, 2015). In addition, many Latino children enter kindergarten speaking little or no …
