Essays On Gender, Ethnicity, And Health In The United States And Turkey, Tunay Oguz
Essays On Gender, Ethnicity, And Health In The United States And Turkey, Tunay Oguz
Economics ETDs
This dissertation is composed of three studies examining barriers to health and healthcare that affect individuals on the basis of their race, ethnicity, and gender. The first study examines access to care disparities between non-Hispanic whites and Hispanics. I find that observed characteristics explain all of the disparities in access to care between these two groups, a marked change from a decade ago when characteristics explained only 65 percent. However, disparities in access to care between women and men remain unexplained even when differences in their attitudes and beliefs regarding healthcare are controlled for, especially for Hispanic men and women. …
The Phenomenology Of Second Language Acquisition: Poiesis And The Emergence Of The Multilingual Subject, Courtney E. Scarborough
The Phenomenology Of Second Language Acquisition: Poiesis And The Emergence Of The Multilingual Subject, Courtney E. Scarborough
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This study explores relationships between second language acquisition (SLA), poetic language, and embodied cognition and its connection to second language speakers’ linguistic self-formation, or their distinct ways of speaking and thinking. In particular, this study examines processes by which second language (L2) learners’ subjective realities are constructed and demonstrates that these processes are inherently poetic, emerging from a combination of the constraining structures of the language system and second language speakers’ phenomenological experiences. The context of the study is a poetry-making activity the researcher designed and took place in the English Department Writing Center at California State University, San Bernardino. …
The Soldier As "I"-Witness In Novels By Barbusse And Ehni, Jane E. Evans
The Soldier As "I"-Witness In Novels By Barbusse And Ehni, Jane E. Evans
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "The Soldier as 'I'-Witness in Novels by Barbusse and Ehni" Jane E. Evans discusses the representation of the French soldier in two first-person accounts based on life writing journals. The first, set during World War I, describes the simple ground soldier or troufion (Le Feu). The second, set during the Algerian War for Independence and later, sketches the life of the French army conscript. Three themes in Evans's analysis predominate: the narrators' reliance on life writing as sources of inspiration in both Henri Barbusse's 1916 Le Feu and René-Nicolas Ehni's 2002 Algérie roman, the narrator's …

A Lexical Approach For Classifying Malicious Urls, Michael Darling
A Lexical Approach For Classifying Malicious Urls, Michael Darling
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Given the continuous growth of illicit activities on the Internet, there is a need for intelligent systems to identify malicious web pages. It has been shown that URL anal- ysis is an e\u21b5ective tool for detecting phishing, malware, and other attacks. Previous studies have performed URL classification using a combination of lexical features, network tra c, hosting information, and other strategies. These approaches require time-intensive lookups which introduce significant delay in real-time systems. This paper describes a lightweight approach for classifying malicious web pages using URL lexical analysis alone. The goal is to explore the upper-bound of the classification accuracy …

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations
Healthcare-associated infections, while preventable, result in increased morbidity and mortality in nursing home (NH) residents. Frontline personnel, such as certified nursing assistants (CNAs), are crucial to successful implementation of infection prevention and control (IPC) practices. The purpose of this study was to explore barriers to implementing and maintaining IPC practices for NH CNAs as well as to describe strategies used to overcome these barriers. We conducted a multi-site qualitative study of NH personnel important to infection control. Audio-recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim and transcripts were analyzed using conventional content analysis. Five key themes emerged as perceived barriers to effective IPC …

Mobisurround: An Auditory User Interface For Geo-Service Delivery, Keith Gardiner, Charlie Cullen, James Carswell
Conference papers
This paper describes original research carried out in the area of Location-Based Services (LBS) with an emphasis on Auditory User Interfaces (AUI) for content delivery. Previous work in this area has focused on accurately determining spatial interactions and informing the user mainly by means of the visual modality. mobiSurround is new research that builds upon these principles with a focus on multimodal content delivery and navigation and in particular the development of an AUI. This AUI enables the delivery of rich media content and natural directions using audio. This novel approach provides a hands free method for navigating a space …
On Territoriality And International Investment Law: Applying China's Investment Treaties To Hong Kong And Macao, Odysseas G. Repousis
On Territoriality And International Investment Law: Applying China's Investment Treaties To Hong Kong And Macao, Odysseas G. Repousis
Michigan Journal of International Law
To date, investor-state tribunals have been preoccupied with a range of issues revolving around the territorial application (territoriality) of international investment agreements (IIAs). The importance, as well as the various forms such issues take, has recently been highlighted in the decision of the Singapore High Court (SGHC) in Laos v. Sanum. In this case, the SGHC was asked by Laos to set aside an earlier arbitral award (in Sanum v. Laos), filed by a Macanese legal entity and rendered under the China-Laos bilateral investment treaty (BIT). In approaching the matter, the SGHC set aside the award on the grounds that …

Is “Culture” A Workable Concept For (Cross-)Cultural Psychology?, Ype Poortinga
Is “Culture” A Workable Concept For (Cross-)Cultural Psychology?, Ype Poortinga
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
In this essay three points are addressed:
First, despite repeated findings of limited cross-cultural variation for core areas of study, research in cross-cultural psychology continues to be directed mainly at finding differences in psychological functioning. This often happens at the cost of attention for similarities between groups, or invariance. As a consequence, cross-cultural psychology as a field is feeding into stereotyped views of “them” versus “us”.
Second, the notion of culture implies a holistic perspective, in which various aspects of the behavior repertoire within a group tend to be seen as hanging together. Such views tend to contribute to ideas …

Automatic Emotion Identification From Text, Wenbo Wang
Automatic Emotion Identification From Text, Wenbo Wang
Kno.e.sis Publications
Emotions are both prevalent in and essential to most aspects of our lives. They in- fluence our decision-making, affect our social relationships and shape our daily behavior. With the rapid growth of emotion-rich textual content, such as microblog posts, blog posts, and forum discussions, there is a growing need to develop algorithms and techniques for identifying people’s emotions expressed in text. It has valuable implications for the studies of suicide prevention, employee productivity, well-being of people, customer relationship management, etc. However, emotion identification is quite challenging partly due to the following reasons: i) It is a multi-class classification problem that …

Education and Policy Briefs
Findings from a joint collaborative between the Center for Equity for English Learners (CEEL) at Loyola Marymount University and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to provide professional development and coaching to Transitional Kindergarten (TK) teachers on the Scaffolded Dialogic Reading (SDR) are presented in this policy brief. SDR is a method to enhance language skills through dialogue and research-based scaffolds between teachers and small groups of children mediated through repeated readings of storybooks. The purpose of this brief is to: 1) state the opportunity to ensure Dual Language Learner (DLL) support within California’s TK policy; 2) provide a …
At The Sea's Edge: Revisiting The Origins Of Native Seamanship In Southern Arabia, Christopher John Stachura
At The Sea's Edge: Revisiting The Origins Of Native Seamanship In Southern Arabia, Christopher John Stachura
History ETDs
Research into the pre-Islamic Arabs has posited an autochthonous, maritime tradition in Southern Arabia which provided the foundation for effective use of sea power within the early Islamic state. Using historical and archaeological evidence, the existence of such a tradition is reexamined within the broader cultural and historical context of the area, with focus divided into three periods; that immediately prior to the birth of Muhammad, that before the rise of Ptolemaic Egypt and that of the Mesopotamian City-States, when southern Arabia was peripheral to the earliest organized civilizations. It is concluded that although maritime resources were always utilized to …

Suicide Assessment Training In Counselor Education, Neil Rigsbee
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
This dissertation examines the empirical literature regarding assessment and intervention of suicide, specifically regarding training counseling students to assess and intervene with potentially suicidal individuals. The author developed an online suicide assessment and intervention training module to train counseling students how to assess and intervene with suicidal clients. The author examined the effectiveness of the training module using an experimental randomized controlled pre-post design. Participants were assessed on their suicide intervention skills using the Suicide Intervention Response Inventory-2 (Neimeyer & Bonnelle, 1997), and suicide assessment abilities, abilities to determine level of suicide risk, and abilities to determine appropriate clinical actions …

Spanish-Speaking Students Perceptions Of Efl As Demonstrated In Writing For An Undergraduate English Phonetics And Phonology Course In Bogotá Colombia, Claudia Helena Lombana Giraldo
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Students' perceptions of English as a foreign language (EFL) were studied in 20 final papers written by 44 students for the undergraduate course of English Phonetics and Phonology taught at a university in Bogota, Colombia in four cohorts. Using qualitative content analysis (QCA), this study analyzes students' meanings and interpretations of the foreign language in their written ideas that emerged in the process of written and phonetic transcriptions of a verbatim sample chosen from the Internet. These meanings were represented in the students' words, ideas, and symbols to construe the new language and to make sense out of it. The …

An Application Of The Communicative Language Teaching (Clt) Approach For English As A Foreign Language (Efl) Learners In The Arab Context, Rana Saad Al-Khafaji
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
EFL textbooks in countries of the Arab region have introduced the communicative language teaching (CLT) approach as a way to improve learners English fluency. However, Arab EFL teachers face many challenges in implementing this approach. This study was conducted to provide a possible sample of a CLT unit plan to examine: 1) what does a unit plan with the CLT approach look like? 2) How to use CLT activities to promote an interactive EFL learning? The related literature review identified some initiatives to enhance the Arab EFL communication skills, represented by introducing the CLT approach to language teaching methods and …

Neighborhood Diversity And The Creative Class In Chicago, Bradley Bereitschaft, Rex G. Cammack
Neighborhood Diversity And The Creative Class In Chicago, Bradley Bereitschaft, Rex G. Cammack
Geography and Geology Faculty Publications
Richard Florida's creative class theory posits that highly skilled workers with creative- or knowledge-intensive occupations are particularly sensitive to ‘quality of place’, a key component of which is an open and tolerant attitude toward different peoples, cultures, and lifestyles. While diversity, as a proxy for tolerance, has proven to be a relatively weak pull-factor at the inter-metropolitan level, the potential role of neighborhood-level diversity in the residential location of creative class workers has yet to be explored empirically. In this study we use ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and geographically weighted regression (GWR) to test the hypothesis that there exists …

Evaluation And Improvement Of Procurement Process With Data Analytics, Melvin H. C. Tan, Wee Leong Lee
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Analytics can be applied in procurement to benefit organizations beyond just prevention and detection of fraud. This study aims to demonstrate how advanced data mining techniques such as text mining and cluster analysis can be used to improve visibility of procurement patterns and provide decision-makers with insight to develop more efficient sourcing strategies, in terms of cost and effort. A case study of an organization’s effort to improve its procurement process is presented in this paper. The findings from this study suggest that opportunities exist for organizations to aggregate common goods and services among the purchases made under and across …
