Evicting Victims: Reforming St. Louis's Nuisance Ordinance For Survivors Of Domestic Violence, Nava Kantor, Molly W. Metzger
Evicting Victims: Reforming St. Louis's Nuisance Ordinance For Survivors Of Domestic Violence, Nava Kantor, Molly W. Metzger
Center for Social Development Research
Nuisance ordinances, established in municipalities nationwide to ostensibly protect the well-being of residents, threaten property owners with fines and jail time if they fail to abate a nuisance occurring on their property. Rather than promoting conflict resolution, such punitive consequences incentivize landlords to simply evict the tenants causing the nuisance. The enforcement of nuisance ordinances can have detrimental and disproportionate effects on already vulnerable populations, including tenants in domestic violence situations. The City of St. Louis employs a chronic nuisance ordinance, which is based in part on the number of police calls to a property. This ordinance can force survivors …

Domestic Violence Practitioners' Use Of Research Evidence: Attitudes And Organizational Social Context, Krithika Malhotra
Domestic Violence Practitioners' Use Of Research Evidence: Attitudes And Organizational Social Context, Krithika Malhotra
Open Access Dissertations
Social services providers in the field of domestic violence (DV) are under increased pressure to have their clinical practices and programs be informed by research evidence. To date, however, it is unclear if DV practitioners are using research evidence in their work and little is known about the various attitudinal and organizational factors that may be associated with their use and ignoring of research. This study was conducted to help fill-in some of these knowledge gaps. A national sample of 206 DV practitioners (92% women, 64% white, mean age 42) completed the Practitioners Use of Research Survey, an online survey …

Federalism, Federal Courts, And Victims' Rights, Michael E. Solimine, Kathryn Elvey
Catholic University Law Review
One of the most striking developments in American criminal law and procedure in the past four decades has been the widespread establishment of victims’ rights at both the federal and state levels. A conspicuous exception to the success of the victims’ rights movement has been the failure of Congress to pass a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would uniformly establish such rights in all federal and state courts. Advanced by both private organizations and state officials, and with bipartisan support in Congress, bills establishing a Victims’ Rights Amendment (VRA) have been introduced several times in the past three …

Social Norms About A Health Issue In Work Group Networks, Lauren B. Frank
Social Norms About A Health Issue In Work Group Networks, Lauren B. Frank
Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose of this study is to advance theorizing about how small groups understand health issues through the use of social network analysis. To achieve this goal, an adapted cognitive social structure examines group social norms around a specific health issue, H1N1 flu prevention. As predicted, individual’s attitudes, self-efficacy, and perceived social norms were each positively associated with behavioral intentions for at least one of the H1N1 health behaviors studied. Moreover, collective norms of the whole group were also associated with behavioral intentions, even after controlling for how individual group members perceive those norms. For members of work groups in …

Akron Law Review
Part I of this Article traces the historical development of Code Section 4943 and the business entanglement issues that the Code Section was designed to combat. It then discusses developments in the law that occurred after the passage of Section 4943 that have implications for its structure, most importantly the introduction of the LLC. Part II describes the current statutory scheme of Section 4943, and the ambiguity in the manner in which it applies, and the practical problems and abuses that potentially arise from this ambiguity. In Part III, the Article reviews various options for clarifying the treatment of Section …

Challenges And Resilience In African American Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: A Review Of The Literature With Practice Implications, Fengyan Tang, Heejung Jang, Valire Carr Copeland
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
This paper reviews literature on grandparents raising grandchildren, focusing on caregiving challenges and resilience in African American grandparent caregivers within a socio-cultural context. A strengths perspective that emphasizes capacities and competencies at the individual, family, and community levels is applied in understanding how African American grandparents rely on their strengths to overcome caregiving challenges. Building on the review of social programs and intervention services that targeted empowerment practice, the authors propose an empowerment model of working with African American grandparents, that is, building capacities through an empowerment process to address caregiving challenges and to achieve positive caregiving outcomes. Finally, the …
