Scaffolding To Improve Writing Skills In A Computer Science Literacy Course, Wu He, Harris Wu, Li Xu, Kurt Maly
Scaffolding To Improve Writing Skills In A Computer Science Literacy Course, Wu He, Harris Wu, Li Xu, Kurt Maly
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Writing has been recognized as an important skill in the technology field. This paper reports a study that uses a scaffolding approach to improve student writing skills in a computer science literacy course. While the quantitative results do not show a significant impact of scaffolding in individual paper assignment on the subsequent group wiki assignment, the student feedback in end-of-semester evaluations strongly indicated that scaffolding indeed helped improve their writing.
Obstacles To Ph1n1 Vaccine Availability: The Complex Contracting Relationship Between Vaccine Manufacturers, Who, Donor And Beneficiary Governments, Sam Halabi
Articles, Chapters in Books and Other Contributions to Scholarly Works
Vaccines are the most important line of defense to protect public health and the spread of disease during influenza pandemics. Yet the 2009 experience with pandemic H1N1 influenza showed that manufacturers, wealthy and poor governments were completely unprepared for the demands that global demand for vaccine production and distribution might impose. This chapter analyzes the failures of the system in 2009-10 with the aim of facilitating greater preparedness for future influenza pandemics.

Tort Reform And Jury Instructions, Charles W. Adams
Articles, Chapters in Books and Other Contributions to Scholarly Works
This article discusses two recent statutes and the efforts of the Oklahoma Committee on Uniform Jury Instructions (Civil OUJI Committee) to recommend uniform jury instructions based on these statutes to the Oklahoma Supreme Court. The first statute is Okla. Stat. Title 12, §577.4, which deals with an instruction to juries that awards for damages for personal injuries and wrongful death that are nontaxable. The second statute is Okla. Stat. Title 23, §61.2, which imposes a $350,000 cap on noneconomic losses for personal injuries.
Why Personhood Matters, Tamara R. Piety
Why Personhood Matters, Tamara R. Piety
Articles, Chapters in Books and Other Contributions to Scholarly Works
One of the most controversial aspect of the Supreme Court's decisions in Citizens United and Hobby Lobby is its treatment of corporate personhood. Many members of the public object to the notion that corporations should have the same rights as human beings. Yet many scholars claim that this concern is misplaced. In this article I argue that concern about corporate personhood is not misplaced because the personhood metaphor conceals the degree to which there has not been an adequate justification given for extending fundamental rights to corporations. Focusing on personhood allows us to push on the metaphor to ask whether …

A Dynamic Programming Algorithm For Finding The Optimal Placement Of A Secondary Structure Topology In Cryo-Em Data, Abhishek Biswas, Desh Ranjan, Mohammad Zubair, Jing He
A Dynamic Programming Algorithm For Finding The Optimal Placement Of A Secondary Structure Topology In Cryo-Em Data, Abhishek Biswas, Desh Ranjan, Mohammad Zubair, Jing He
Computer Science Faculty Publications
The determination of secondary structure topology is a critical step in deriving the atomic structures from the protein density maps obtained from electron cryomicroscopy technique. This step often relies on matching the secondary structure traces detected from the protein density map to the secondary structure sequence segments predicted from the amino acid sequence. Due to inaccuracies in both sources of information, a pool of possible secondary structure positions needs to be sampled. One way to approach the problem is to first derive a small number of possible topologies using existing matching algorithms, and then find the optimal placement for each …
Reminiscing About 15 Years Of Interoperability Efforts, Herbert Van De Sompel, Michael L. Nelson
Reminiscing About 15 Years Of Interoperability Efforts, Herbert Van De Sompel, Michael L. Nelson
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Over the past fifteen years, our perspective on tackling information interoperability problems for web-based scholarship has evolved significantly. In this opinion piece, we look back at three efforts that we have been involved in that aptly illustrate this evolution: OAI-PMH, OAI-ORE, and Memento. Understanding that no interoperability specification is neutral, we attempt to characterize the perspectives and technical toolkits that provided the basis for these endeavors. With that regard, we consider repository-centric and web-centric interoperability perspectives, and the use of a Linked Data or a REST/HATEAOS technology stack, respectively. We also lament the lack of interoperability across nodes that play …
Architecture Study For A Fuel Depot Supplied From Lunar Resources, Thomas Milton Perrin
Architecture Study For A Fuel Depot Supplied From Lunar Resources, Thomas Milton Perrin
Theses and Dissertations
Heretofore, discussions of space fuel depots assumed the depots would be supplied from Earth. However, the confirmation of deposits of water ice at the lunar poles in 2009 suggests the possibility of supplying a space depot with liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen produced from lunar ice.
This architecture study sought to determine the optimum architecture for a fuel depot supplied from lunar resources. Three factors – the location of propellant processing (on the Moon or on the depot), the location of the depot (on the Moon or in cislunar space), and if in cislunar space, where (LEO, GEO, or Earth-Moon L1), and …
Characterization Of Dopamine Transporter Palmitoylation, Danielle Elizabeth Rastedt
Characterization Of Dopamine Transporter Palmitoylation, Danielle Elizabeth Rastedt
Theses and Dissertations
The dopamine transporter (DAT) is an integral membrane protein that mediates the reuptake of synaptic dopamine and thus regulates the spatio-temporal dynamics of dopaminergic neurotransmission. DAT is also the target of powerful addictive psychostimulants, including cocaine and methamphetamine that resulted in dysregulation of dopaminergic signaling. Complex control of DAT is exerted by various regulatory processes, including posttranslational modifications. We previously found that DAT is palmitoylated via the addition of a 16-carbon palmitic acid moiety to Cys 580. Pharmacological and mutagenic studies determined that depalmitoylation conditions led to reductions in Vmax and transporter levels, suggesting palmitoylation controls one or more functions …

Testing The Effect Of Microagressions, Cultural Identity, And Gender On Learning For Northern Plains American Indian College Students, Wanmdiwi Jessi Rose
Theses and Dissertations
Historically the absence of American Indian and Alaskan Native (AI/AN) students in large scale data sets has made it extremely difficult to adequately describe the growing educational crisis facing AI/AN students (Faircloth, Tippeconnic, John W., I.,II, & University of California, Los Angeles, Civil Rights Project/Proyecto,Derechos Civiles, 2010). The purpose of this study was to address the effect microaggressions, cultural identity, and gender has on learning in a sample of Northern Plains AI college students. AI students attending a predominantly white postsecondary institution were randomly assigned to one of two experimental groups (EMVV, EMSS) or one of two control groups (CVS, …
New Employment In Post-1990s Algeria: Are Rapidly Added Jobs Positively Affecting Economic Recovery?, Adrian Troyer
New Employment In Post-1990s Algeria: Are Rapidly Added Jobs Positively Affecting Economic Recovery?, Adrian Troyer
Theses and Dissertations
An apparent labor recovery success story since the turn of the century has been the reduction of Algeria’s post-war high unemployment rate. However, there are reasons to doubt the effectiveness of government programs that induced the adding of large totals of short-term, low-paying jobs, particularly following new labor legislation in December 2004. By nature, this added employment has not been genuine permanent work for the educated that might be associated with labor productivity and economic growth. We use dynamic panel models with Arellano-Bond estimators by the generalized method of moments to suggest that Algeria has not exhibited the expected positive …

Characterization Of Prose By Rhetorical Structure For Machine Learning Classification, James Java
Characterization Of Prose By Rhetorical Structure For Machine Learning Classification, James Java
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Measures of classical rhetorical structure in text can improve accuracy in certain types of stylistic classification tasks such as authorship attribution. This research augments the relatively scarce work in the automated identification of rhetorical figures and uses the resulting statistics to characterize an author's rhetorical style. These characterizations of style can then become part of the feature set of various classification models.
Our Rhetorica software identifies 14 classical rhetorical figures in free English text, with generally good precision and recall, and provides summary measures to use in descriptive or classification tasks. Classification models trained on Rhetorica's rhetorical measures paired with …

We report measurements of the anisotropic upper critical field Hc2(T) for K2Cr3As3 single crystals up to 60 T and T > 0.6K. Our results show that the upper critical field parallel to the Cr chains, H∥c2(T), exhibits a paramagnetically limited behavior, whereas the shape of the H⊥c2(T) curve (perpendicular to the Cr chains) has no evidence of paramagnetic effects. As a result, the curves H⊥c2(T) and H∥c2(T) cross at T ≈ 4K, so that the anisotropy parameter H(T)=H …

Energy-Sharing (E,2e) Collisions: Ionization Of The Inert Gases In The Perpendicular Plane, F. K. Miller, H. R. J. Walters, Colm T. Whelan
Physics Faculty Publications
The triple differential cross section for ionization of the inert gases He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe in energy-sharing perpendicular plane geometry is investigated. Encouraging agreement with recent experiments is found using the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA). Mechanisms are discussed which explain the He and Ne data but which seem to be masked by the greater distortion effects in the heavier targets. The inclusion of postcollisional interaction is explored using Gamow, Nee, and Ward-Macek, Mee, factors. While both help to improve the shape of the cross section for He and Ne at the lower energies, they …

We investigated current induced depairing in the Bi₂Te₃/FeTe topological insulator-chalcogenide interface superconductor. The measured depairing current density provides information on the magnetic penetration depth and superfluid density, which in turn shed light on the nature of the normal state that underlies the interfacial superconductivity.

Virtuality Distributions And Pion Transition Form Factor, A. V. Radyushkin
Physics Faculty Publications
Using the example of hard exclusive transition process ᵞ*ᵞ → π⁰ at the handbag level, we outline basics of a new approach to transverse momentum dependence in hard processes. In coordinate representation, matrix elements of operators (in the simplest case, bilocal 𝒪(0, z)) describing a hadron with momentum p, are functions of (pz) and z² parametrized through virtuality distribution amplitudes (VDA) Φ(x, σ), with x being Fourier-conjugate to (pz) and σ Laplace-conjugate to z2. For intervals with z+ = 0, we introduce the transverse momentum distribution amplitude (TMDA) Ψ(x, k⊥), and write it in terms of VDA …

Clinical Guidelines In Sports Medicine: Am I Reading A Guideline Or A Consensus Statement: What’S The Difference? Does It Matter?, Zuzana Machotka, Luke Perraton, Karen Grimmer
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Introduction: The integration of research evidence into clinical practice is one of the most challenging aspects of sports medicine. The time required to search library databases and read multiple systematic reviews represents a significant barrier to many clinicians. Clinical guidelines and consensus statements provide a summary of best practice for clinical conditions, and provide clinical recommendations. In sports medicine, the terms clinical guideline and consensus statement are often used interchangeably; however, important differences exist between these resources. The aims of this review were to identify the clinical guidelines published in key international sports medicine journals over the last five years, …
