Integrating Meal And Exercise Into Personalized Glucoregulation Models: Metabolic Dynamics And Diabetic Athletes, Sofie Schunk Oct 2015

Integrating Meal And Exercise Into Personalized Glucoregulation Models: Metabolic Dynamics And Diabetic Athletes, Sofie Schunk

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Diabetes affects nearly 26 million Americans, according to the American Diabetes Association, with as many as three million Americans who have Type 1 Diabetes (ADA, 2015). Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is autoimmune and characterized by little to no insulin production whereas Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) concerns insulin resistance and inability to use produced insulin. Factors contributing to current diabetes management and regulation include exercise type, daily movement activities, and distinct tissue compartment metabolism, each challenging to model in a robust and comprehensive manner. Past models are highly limited in regard to exercise and varying glucose fluctuations dependent on type, intensity, …

The Perfect Machine: The Reason Behind The Anatomical Studies Of Leonardo Da Vinci, Amanda M. Cothern Sep 2015

The Perfect Machine: The Reason Behind The Anatomical Studies Of Leonardo Da Vinci, Amanda M. Cothern

Kaleidoscope

The legacy of Leonardo da Vinci is most often characterized by the works of his brush — however, there is more to Leonardo than what meets the art lover’s eye. His notebooks overflow with scientific studies, the most amazing of which are his detailed drawings of human anatomy. Scholars have long assumed that Leonardo dissected corpses in order to better represent the human form in his painting. In this paper, I counter that assumption, making the following points:

  1. Leonardo’s anatomical findings did not significantly influence his painting.
  2. Leonardo was an accomplished scientist and engineer.
  3. Leonardo applied his knowledge of physics …

Oleogustus: The Unique Taste Of Fat, Cordelia A. Running, Bruce A. Craig, Richard D. Mattes Sep 2015

Oleogustus: The Unique Taste Of Fat, Cordelia A. Running, Bruce A. Craig, Richard D. Mattes

Department of Nutrition Science Faculty Publications

Considerable mechanistic data indicate there may be a sixth basic taste: fat. However, evidence demonstrating that the sensation of non-esterified fatty acids (the proposed stimuli for “fat taste”) differs qualitatively from other tastes is lacking. Using perceptual mapping, we demonstrate that medium and long-chain non-esterified fatty acids have a taste sensation that is distinct from other basic tastes (sweet, sour, salty, and bitter). While some overlap was observed between these NEFA and umami taste, this overlap is likely due to unfamiliarity with umami sensations rather than true similarity. Shorter chain fatty acids stimulate a sensation similar to sour, but as …

Improving Antibiotic Resistant Infection Transmission Situational Awareness In Enclosed Facilities With A Novel Graphical User Interface For Tactical Biosurveillance, Valeriya V. Kettelhut Aug 2015

Improving Antibiotic Resistant Infection Transmission Situational Awareness In Enclosed Facilities With A Novel Graphical User Interface For Tactical Biosurveillance, Valeriya V. Kettelhut

Theses & Dissertations

Serious challenges associated with antibiotic resistant infections (ABRIs) force healthcare practitioners (HCP) to seek innovative approaches that will slow the emergence of new ABRIs and prevent their spread. It was realized that traditional approaches to infection prevention based on education, retrospective reports, and biosurveillance often fail to ensure reliable compliance with infection prevention guidelines and real-time problem solving. The objective of this original research was to develop and test the conceptual design of a situational awareness (SA)-oriented information system for coping with healthcare-associated infection transmission.

Constantly changing patterns in spatial distribution of patients, prevalence of infectious cases, clustering of contacts, …

A Brief Overview Of Amblyaudia, Raelynn Lamminen, Daniel Houlihan Aug 2015

A Brief Overview Of Amblyaudia, Raelynn Lamminen, Daniel Houlihan

Psychology Department Publications

Amblyaudia, a recent subcategory of auditory processing disorder, is characterized by asymmetrical auditory processing of an individual’s ears. Amblyaudia can result in speech comprehension difficulties, reading difficulties, information processing deficits, and inattention. These difficulties can be mistakenly attributed to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), depression, anxiety disorders, and communication disorders. Unfortunately, traditional hearing tests do not place the two ears in competition and cannot detect asymmetry. Therefore, students who exhibit these difficulties and have normal performance on traditional hearing tests should be also evaluated for amblyaudia with dichotic listening tests. Amblyaudia can be addressed through dichotic …

Quantitative Approaches For Deconvolving The Multiple Contributions Of Primary Structure To Protein Fitness, Loretta Au Aug 2015

Quantitative Approaches For Deconvolving The Multiple Contributions Of Primary Structure To Protein Fitness, Loretta Au

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Proteins from the same family often share many structural and functional motifs. Variations in primary structure, however, allow a single protein family to modulate a broad range of biological processes. Several methods can be used to identify sequence conservation, but complementary mutagenesis experiments are often needed to understand the multiple roles that a given amino acid may have in maintaining overall fitness. Limitations related to financial and temporal costs generally constrain these experiments to smaller proteins or peptides, or to only partial sampling of sequence spaces, and we have devised a computational protocol for large-scale mutagenesis to circumvent these obstacles …

Oxidized Phospholipids Regulation Of The Monocyte Recruitment Parthway In Human Aortic Endothelial Cells, Piao Jian Tan Aug 2015

Oxidized Phospholipids Regulation Of The Monocyte Recruitment Parthway In Human Aortic Endothelial Cells, Piao Jian Tan

Masters Theses

Low-density lipoprotein particles in blood plasma invade the endothelium and become oxidized, creating risk of CHD associated with atherosclerosis, the main underlying condition in coronary heart disease. Oxidation products of the phospholipid 1-palmitoyl- 2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphatidylcholine (PAPC) are bioactive components of minimally oxidized LDL that stimulate endothelial cells that line the artery, leading to monocyte binding and atherosclerosis. It is hypothesized that the regulation of the monocyte recruitment pathway by these oxidized phospholipids is mediated by the binding of OxPAPC to one or more mediating proteins. Human recombinant VEGFR2, GRP78, and EP2bind to OxPNB, a biotinylated analog of OxPAPC, demonstrated using Western …

The Effect Of Color On Working Memory Performance, Michelle Galvez Aug 2015

The Effect Of Color On Working Memory Performance, Michelle Galvez

HIM 1990-2015

This paper explores the effect of color on working memory performance. Interest in Baker-Miller pink surged with the finding by Schauss (1979) that it reduced aggression in aggravated detainees. However, research behind Baker-Miller pink has been influenced by biases and methodological errors. Its effects are likely overstated. Red and blue have also been studied for their effects on creativity, approach-avoidance conflict, detail-orientation, and most importantly, stress. Further research has been conducted on the effects of relaxation on cognition, with the conclusion that increased relaxation leads to improvements in working memory performance. This paper tests the effect of color on working …

Biomechanical Comparisons Of The Power Clean And Power Hang Clean Exercises At Different Relative Intensities, Jacob Troy Caldwell

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare normalized peak power (PP) and peak barbell acceleration (BA) between the power clean (PC) and power hang clean (PHC) exercises among eight male weightlifters (25.5 ℗ł 2.86 yr; 85.25 ℗ł 11 kg). Biomechanical comparisons were made between both exercises at 60%, 70%, and 80% of each subject⁰́₉s one repetition maximum (1RM). When comparing both exercises for normalized PP, there was no significant difference at 60% and 70% of 1RM. At 80% 1RM, the PHC demonstrated significance (p = 0.016) with higher normalized PP when compared to the PC. When comparing both exercises …

Influence Of Native And Processed Cereal Grain Fibers On Gut Health, Junyi Yang Jul 2015

Influence Of Native And Processed Cereal Grain Fibers On Gut Health, Junyi Yang

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Cereal fibers that can be metabolized by gut microbiota have been shown to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Increased consumption of cereal fibers may improve host / gut microbiota interactions in obesity and other metabolic diseases by normalizing gut dysbiosis. The present dissertation describes four research projects to assess the impact of cereal dietary fibers on gut microbiota and host metabolism. In the first study, we determined the treatment temperatures for production of soluble, non-digestible, feruloylated oligo- and polysaccharides (FOPS) from maize bran and wheat bran, and determined the fermentation properties of partially purified FOPS from …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 8(3): 277-286, 2015. Dietary nitrate supplementation has been shown to reduce oxygen consumption at a fixed work rate. We questioned whether a similar effect would be observed during variable work rate exercise at a specific rating of perceived exertion (RPE), as is commonly prescribed for aerobic training sessions. Using a double-blind, placebo controlled, crossover design, ten females (25 ± 3 years; VO2peak 37.1 ± 5.3 ml/kg/min) performed two 20-min cycle ergometer trials at a constant RPE of 13 (somewhat hard) 2.5 hours following ingestion of 140 ml of concentrated beetroot juice (12.9 mmol …

Effect Of A Mindfulness Intervention On Stress And Coping Strategies In Physician Assistant Students, Mark Volpe Jul 2015

Effect Of A Mindfulness Intervention On Stress And Coping Strategies In Physician Assistant Students, Mark Volpe

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Physician assistant students represent a stressed population, often with poor coping skills. Prior research amongst undergraduate and graduate students has shown that mindfulness interventions are often effective in reducing stress in the short-term. This has not been studied in physician assistant students or for long-term outcomes. We propose a randomized controlled trial to study the effects of a mindfulness intervention on short-term and long-term physician assistant student stress and coping skills. Students from three sites in Connecticut will be provided an eight week mindfulness intervention or be placed in a control group. Stress and coping skills will be measured at …

Functional Characterization Of A Cathepsin L In Drosophila Melanogaster, Qian Dong Jul 2015

Functional Characterization Of A Cathepsin L In Drosophila Melanogaster, Qian Dong

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The Drosophila dorsal Air Sac Primordium (ASP) is a tracheal tube that invasively grows toward and into the wing imaginal disc. The unfolding of Drosophila wing is a process following eclosion with a cuticular bilayer replacing epithelial cells originally packing the wing. We reasoned that protease functions might be needed for the invasion of ASP into the wing imaginal disc as well as the rearrangement of epithelia cells during wing unfolding. Our study is particularly focused on understanding the role of a Cathepsin L like cysteine protease (CP1) in the development of dorsal ASP and wing development of Drosophila melanogaster. …

Prediction -- The Quintessential Policy Model Validation Test, Wayne Wakeland Jul 2015

Prediction -- The Quintessential Policy Model Validation Test, Wayne Wakeland

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

It is essential to objectively test how well policy models predict real world behavior. The method used to support this assertion involves the review of three SD policy models emphasizing the degree to which the model was able to fit the historical outcome data and how well model-predicted outcomes matched real world outcomes as they unfolded. Findings indicate that while historical model agreement is a favorable indication of model validity, the act of making predictions without knowing the actual data, and comparing these predictions to actual data, can reveal model weaknesses that might be overlooked when all of the available …

Anthropology Faculty Research

Through human microbiome sequencing, we can better understand how host evolutionary and ontogenetic history is reflected in the microbial function. However, there has been no information on the gut metagenome configuration in hunter-gatherer populations, posing a gap in our knowledge of gut microbiota (GM)-host mutualism arising from a lifestyle that describes over 90% of human evolutionary history. Here, we present the first metagenomic analysis of GM from Hadza hunter-gatherers of Tanzania, showing a unique enrichment in metabolic pathways that aligns with the dietary and environmental factors characteristic of their foraging lifestyle. We found that the Hadza GM is adapted for …

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

Asthma is characterized by airway inflammation and airflow obstruction from human airway smooth muscle (HASM) constriction due to increased local bronchoconstrictive substances. We have recently found bitter taste receptors (TAS2Rs) on HASM, which increase [Ca2+]i and relax the muscle. We report here that some, but not all, TAS2R agonists decrease [Ca2+]i and relax HASM contracted by G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) that stimulate [Ca2+]i. This suggests both a second pathway by which TAS2Rs relax, and, a heterogeneity of the response phenotype. We utilized eight TAS2R agonists and five procontractile GPCR agonists in cultured HASM cells. We find that heterogeneity in the …

Suspension Model For Blood Flow Through A Tapering Catheterized Inclined Artery With Asymmetric Stenosis, Devajyoti Biswas, Moumita Paul Jun 2015

Suspension Model For Blood Flow Through A Tapering Catheterized Inclined Artery With Asymmetric Stenosis, Devajyoti Biswas, Moumita Paul

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We intend to study a particle fluid suspension model for blood flow through an axially asymmetric but radially symmetric mild stenosis in the annular region of an inclined tapered artery and a co-axial catheter in a suitable flow geometry has been considered to investigate the influence of velocity slip at the stenotic wall as well as hematocrit, shape parameter. The model also includes the tapering effect and inclination of the artery. Expressions for the flow variables have been derived analytically and their variations with various flow parameters are represented graphically. The results for the different values of the parameters involved …

Human Olfactory Perception: A Literature Review, Catherine Jameson Lee Kelly Jun 2015

Human Olfactory Perception: A Literature Review, Catherine Jameson Lee Kelly

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

There has been wide debate about the degree to which humans are impacted by olfaction. Despite former assumptions that we are dominantly visual/auditory creatures, recent studies suggest that humans are more highly macrosmatic than originally thought. Humans have demonstrated behavioral, physiological, cognitive and affective responses to olfactory stimuli even when the stimuli were perceived unconsciously. The mechanism by which humans perceive these signals is unclear; there is much debate as to whether the vomeronasal organ is functional in humans. Regardless of the mechanism of perception, it is clear olfaction is psychologically impactful for humans. The following literature review summarizes research …

A Pill, A Cup Of Tea, And A Cigarette: Male Body In Egypt At The Age Of Viagra, Youssef Ramez Boktor Jun 2015

A Pill, A Cup Of Tea, And A Cigarette: Male Body In Egypt At The Age Of Viagra, Youssef Ramez Boktor

Theses and Dissertations

From disciplined self to ‘Viagra-self’ is a transition that men experience in the ‘age of Viagra’. My field work looks at how chemically enhanced sexual performance has been normalized in a specific way that signifies the deliberate control over human’s sexual performance. How the sexual relationship - in a specific socio-cultural context - becomes the most available path to seek happiness ‘inbesat’, in low priced form. The ‘Viagra-self’ learns how to invest in parts of the body in order to perform, to experience how the chemically enhanced body can proclaims control and time (sexual) performance. The Viagra-self, in the era …
