Heart failure (HF) is a costly, challenging and highly prevalent medical condition. Hospitalization for acute decompensation is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Despite application of evidence-based medical therapies and technologies, HF remains a formidable challenge for virtually all healthcare systems. Repeat hospitalizations for acute decompensated HF (ADHF) can have major financial impact on institutions and resources. Early and accurate identification of impending ADHF is of paramount importance yet there is limited high quality evidence or infrastructure to guide management in the outpatient setting. Historically, ADHF was identified by physical exam findings or invasive hemodynamic monitoring during a hospital admission; …

In an effort to combat diseases and disorders that impede our health, comfort and well-being, an abundance of prescription drugs have emerged in the past 60 years. Many prescription drugs have remarkable efficacy for treating the primary symptoms of these diseases and disorders; however, some drugs carry negative side effects that impose their own adverse symptoms, albeit, often to a lesser degree than the primary symptoms. Thus, one of the main objectives of the pharmaceutical industry is to innovate and develop novel therapeutics, which remediate the primary symptoms of disease and lack undesirable negative side effects. However, in order to …

Sedentary behavior (SB) is a major contributing factor to obesity and significant morbidity and mortality in adolescence and into adulthood, yet measuring SB is difficult. The purpose of this study was to assess the degree of construct validity of the ActiGraph GT3X+ inclinometer function and accelerometry metrics in objectively measuring SB and physical activity in young adult university students while performing semi-structured activities: lying, sitting, reading, playing seated video gaming, video watching, seated conversation, standing, stationary biking, and walking. These nine activities were objectively assessed using inclinometry and four output metrics from the ActiGraph based on the axis used to …
