Demonstration: Development Of A Minimum Set Of Parish Nurse Educational Outcomes And Behavioral Objectives, Deborah Ziebarth

International Journal of Faith Community Nursing

A Wisconsin parish nurse educator asked the question, “...who has the authority to say what is parish nursing in the state of Wisconsin and what are the key elements of a parish nurse training curriculum?” This work represents a six year effort to answer that question. This project answers the question by examining the essential core elements of parish nursing (now referred to as faith community nursing) training curriculums taught in the state of Wisconsin. Ultimately the project provided a minimum set of standardized education outcomes and behavioral objectives for training courses throughout the state. The work began with a …

The Role Of The Faith Community Nurse In Fostering Spirituality In Those With Alzheimer's Disease, Verna Carson Phd, Pmh/Cns-Bc

International Journal of Faith Community Nursing

Alzheimer ’s disease (AD) strips individuals of memories and abilities that have defined them as productive adults throughout their life. While the decline in memory is real and results in a ‘loss of self’ this does not equate to a ‘loss of soul.’ AD patients continue to have spiritual needs throughout their life as do the family, and/or caregivers. This article explores the spiritual needs and care of AD patients and families and the unique opportunity faith community nurses have to help the AD patient and their support system. The Reisberg Functional Assessment Staging System is used to explain the …

Implementing Legal Strategies For Creating Safe And Supportive School Environments, Susan Cole

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

As many as 50% of all children, according to the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study, come to school each day having experienced serious traumatic events, including abuse, neglect, witnessing violence, and various forms of household dysfunction. For many students, these experiences and others, such as homelessness and bullying, may cause a trauma reaction that can have significant effects on their ability to learn. Students need a safe and supportive school-wide environment to help them form positive relationships, calm their emotions and behaviors, and focus, so that they can learn and be successful at school.

Current laws often put barriers in the …

Growing Food And Community: Long Term Community Land Management In Boston, Matthew Delsesto Oct 2015

Growing Food And Community: Long Term Community Land Management In Boston, Matthew Delsesto

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Sustainability has become a popular trend and policy tool for urban interventions in American cities, including the implementation of sustainable urban agriculture projects. In practice, effective urban agriculture projects require long term engagement in community management of land with a deep connection to the specific context and history of a neighborhood, as the case of The Food Project in Boston demonstrates. The strong presence of The Food Project in Boston’s Dudley Street neighborhood today grew out of a larger neighborhood history that involved a series of unlikely but powerful collaborations. Part of this context is the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative’s …

Coupling Benefits: Strategies For Vacant Land Reuse Along Cleveland's Opportunity Corridor, Jeffrey Kruth

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

This paper discusses large scale planning efforts pertaining to vacant land reuse, economic development, and public participation along the Opportunity Corridor project in Cleveland, Ohio. The Corridor is a $331 million roadway project that will span 3.3 miles through some of Cleveland’s most blighted neighborhoods. Issues of distributional justice including underperforming public education, poor public health indicators, high rates of vacancy, and aging infrastructure contribute to neighborhood blight throughout the area. Stormwater management, access to multi-modal transportation, brownfield mitigation, and economic development are also prevalent issues throughout the project area. Advocacy work by the Kent State University Cleveland Urban Design …

Cities, Gardening, And Urban Citizenship: Transforming Vacant Acres Into Community Resources, Matthew Delsesto

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

What does the urban gardener do, in the process of reclaiming and transforming previously vacant and abandoned land? What are the political, social, and ecological implications of creating community managed and owned spaces through urban agriculture? To address such questions, in the context of work that is being done across the world to transform vacant land into community resources, this article investigates the powerful potential of community managed gardening projects from the perspective of urban citizenship. Inventorying Land Availability And Suitability For Community Gardens In Madison, Wisconsin, Francis Eanes, Stephen J. Ventura

Cities and the Environment (CATE)
