The Zoning In And The Zoning Out Of The Elderly: Emerging Community And Communication Patterns, Susan J. Drucker
The Zoning In And The Zoning Out Of The Elderly: Emerging Community And Communication Patterns, Susan J. Drucker
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
Increasingly, senior only residences are zoning seniors out of mainstream residential areas and into segregated living and mature communities. Senior gated communities are variations on a theme of gated communities in which lifestyle is packaged and sold. Active adult retirement communities exclude the young and offer active lifestyle living, with diverse levels of senior living choices. Such an approach contrasts with policies designed to encourage aging in place. It is also distinct from Golden Age Zoning districts designed to allow affordable housing for senior citizens in a public/private partnership. Some towns have zoned public parks to establish areas for children …

Sex Differences And The Role Of Il-10 In Ischemic Stroke Recovery., Sarah E. Conway, Meaghan Roy O’Reilly, Brett Friedler, Ilene Staff, Gilbert Fortunato, Louise D. Mccullough
UCHC Articles - Research
Females experience poorer recovery after ischemic stroke compared to males, even after controlling for age and stroke severity. IL-10 is an anti-inflammatory cytokine produced by T regulatory cells and Th2 CD4+ helper T cells. In ischemic stroke, an excessive IL-10 response contributes to post-stroke immunosuppression, which worsens outcomes. However, it is unknown if sex differences exist in IL-10 levels after ischemic stroke. In this study, we found that higher levels of IL-10 were associated with poor acute and long-term outcomes after ischemic stroke in female patients but not in males. After controlling for confounders, IL-10 was not an independent …

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications
Jordan faces great internal water scarcity and pollution, conflict over trans-boundary waters, and strong dependency on external water resources through trade. This paper analyzes these issues and subsequently reviews options to reduce the risk of extreme water scarcity and dependency. Based on estimates of water footprint, water availability, and virtual water trade, we find that groundwater consumption is nearly double the groundwater availability, water pollution aggravates blue water scarcity, and Jordan’s external virtual water import dependency is 86%. The review of response options yields 10 ingredients for a strategy for Jordan to mitigate the risks of extreme water scarcity and …

With up to 500,000 infections annually, Lassa virus (LASV), the cause of Lassa fever, is one of the most prevalent etiological agents of viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) in humans. LASV is endemic in several West African countries with sporadic cases and prolonged outbreaks observed most commonly in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Nigeria. Additionally several cases of Lassa fever have been imported into North America, Europe and Asia making LASV a global threat to public health. Despite this, currently no approved therapeutic or vaccine exists to treat or prevent LASV infections. Here, using a passaged strain of LASV that is …

Animals And Causal Impotence: A Deontological View, Blake Hereth
Animals And Causal Impotence: A Deontological View, Blake Hereth
Between the Species
In animal ethics, some ethicists such as Peter Singer argue that we ought not to purchase animal products because doing so causally contributes to unnecessary suffering. Others, such as Russ Shafer-Landau, counter that where such unnecessary suffering is not causally dependent on one’s causal contributions, there is no duty to refrain from purchasing animal products, even if the process by which those products are produced is morally abhorrent. I argue that there are at least two plausible principles which ground the wrongness of purchasing animal products produced by morally abhorrent means. First, respect for the wishes and dignity of animals …

Evaluating Faciltated Migration As A Climate Change Adaptation Approach In Southern Ontario's Sugar Maple Ecosystems, Kaitlyn Mcglade
Geography and Environmental Studies Major Research Papers
This research seeks to provide an explanation and evaluation of facilitated migration as an adaptation approach for improving the long-term resilience and sustainability of Acer saccharum (sugar maple) ecosystems and sugarbush production. The research concludes that faciliated migration is supported by producers and other industry stakeholders as a feasable adaptation approach for improving resilience and sustainability.

Introduction: Cardiogenic shock that results from pulmonary embolus has a high mortality rate. Systemic thrombolysis is frequently used in submassive and massive pulmonary embolus and has been shown to restore circulation. However, in the event of impending or ongoing cardiac arrest, systemic thrombolysis or anticoagulation alone has not been always shown to be effective. Case reports have previously established that extracorporeal membrane oxygenation can effectively be used as an effective rescue strategy in cases of cardiac arrest as a result from massive pulmonary embolus. We report six cases of massive pulmonary embolism (PE), in which veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA …

The VAD Journal
Implantation rates of the SynCardia Total Artificial Heart (TAH) system is growing owing to the increasing incidence of biventricular heart failure and the limited number of transplantable hearts. Among the complications associated with the device, atrial tamponade is an emergent condition that requires immediate attention. Atrial tamponade occurs when increasing pericardial hemorrhage leads to atrial compression that produces tamponade physiology and compromises cardiac output. Unfortunately to our knowledge, information concerning the early manifestations of tamponade in TAH patients is extremely scarce. Previous reports have focused on decreased cardiac output as an indicator of tamponade. However, other presentations including pulmonary decompensation …

Self-Authorship: A Teaching Approach During The After-School Community Program, Fatjona Lubonja
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of integrating self-authorship pedagogy applied to a younger population. Integration of a self-authorship program during an after-school community program examined the self-authorship pedagogy approach following the developmental theory designed by Baxter Magolda (1999, 2001). Much of previous research in self-authorship was influenced by college student population. There was a literature gap on self- authorship theory applied to younger age population. This research investigated students' responses to the self-authorship program, the impact self-authorship had on students' learning, the impact self-authorship had on after-school programs, and my leadership throughout the research. The …

Distal Insertional Footprint Of The Brachialis Muscle: 3d Morphometric Study, Srinath Kamineni, Abdo Bachoura, William Behrens, Ellora Kamineni, Andrew Deane
Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Faculty Publications
Objective. The purpose of this study is to describe the three-dimensional morphometry of the brachialis muscle at its distal attachment to the ulna. Methods. Fifty cadaveric elbows were dissected and the brachialis distal insertion was isolated on the ulna bone and probed with a three-dimensional digitizer, to create a three-dimensional model of the footprint. Measurements and analysis of each footprint shape were recorded and compared based on gender and size. Results. There was significant gender difference in the surface length (P = 0.002) and projected length (P = 0.001) of the brachialis footprint. The shapes …
