X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry Using Synchrotron Radiation With Applications In Unmanned Aircraft Environmental Sensing, Sean Richard Barberie Dec 2015

X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry Using Synchrotron Radiation With Applications In Unmanned Aircraft Environmental Sensing, Sean Richard Barberie

Chemistry and Biochemistry

In this thesis I present an analytical optimization of the Synchrotron Radiation X-Ray Fluorescence (SR-XRF) technique for applications in unmanned aircraft aerosol studies. In environmental and atmospheric science, there is a pressing need for aerosol measurements at various altitudes in the atmosphere and spanning large regions. This need is currently either ignored, or met to a limited degree by studies that employ manned aircraft. There is, however, a great deal of opportunity to improve and expand on these studies using the emerging technology of unmanned aircraft systems. A newly developed aerosol sampler makes this opportunity a near-reality by its ability …

Structural Study Of Pb(Ii) And Sb(V) Adsorption On The Hydroxylated Hematite(1102) Surface, Canrong Qiu, N/A 丘灿荣

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Surface complexation reactions at mineral-water interface play a key role in dictating the mobility and bioavailability of aqueous species in the environment, considering the minerals (like iron-(oxyhydr)oxides), ubiquitous in nature, are usually of high specific surface area and contain a lot of potentially reactive surface sites for binding ions. Thus, the fundamental understanding of surface complexation reactions is essential to better model the environmental fate and transport of toxic aqueous species. In the current study, the hematite (1102) surface was selected as a model substrate for iron-(oxyhydr)oxides commonly found in the environment to investigate the surface complexation reactions of Pb(II) …

‘We Are The Monitors Now’: Experiential Knowledge, Transcorporeality And Environmental Justice, Dayna Scott Dec 2015

‘We Are The Monitors Now’: Experiential Knowledge, Transcorporeality And Environmental Justice, Dayna Scott

Articles & Book Chapters

Residents of pollution hotspots often take on projects in ‘citizen science’, or popularepidemiology, in an effort to marshal the data that can prove their experience of the pollution to the relevant authorities. Sometimes these tactics, such as pollution logs or bucket brigades, take advantage of residents’ spatially ordered and finely honed experiential and sensory knowledge of the places they inhabit. But putting that knowledge into conversation with law requires them to mobilize a new, ‘foreign’ set of tools, primarily oriented to the observation, measurement and sampling of pollution according to conventional scientific standards. Here, I employ qualitative empirical methods in …

Wrestling, Archery, And Horse Racing In Buryatia: Traditional Sports Competitions And Social Change, Stefan Krist Dec 2015

Wrestling, Archery, And Horse Racing In Buryatia: Traditional Sports Competitions And Social Change, Stefan Krist

Anthropology

Sporting activities are examined in order to better understand a society's general socio-economic and political changes. The two basic research questions are the following: (1) Which economic, social, political, and cultural changes in and of the Buryat society were and are reflected in Buryat traditional sports? (2) How far and in which ways did and do Buryat traditional sports and the people engaged in them contribute to social change? Anthropological studies of play, games, and sport, an overview of which is presented in Chapter 1, have revealed that sports are closely linked and tightly entangled with the cultures and societies, …

Synergistic Effects Among Leading Indicators Of Construction Safety Management, Matthew E. Calhoun Dec 2015

Synergistic Effects Among Leading Indicators Of Construction Safety Management, Matthew E. Calhoun

Engineering

Safety performance in the construction industry has improved significantly since the Occupational Safety and Health Act was enacted in 1970. Despite these improvements, annual accident statistics indicate the construction industry remains one of the most dangerous for workers. However, there are some construction companies that defy these statistics and have an exemplary safety record. Many of these companies have adopted a zero-accident vision and measure their safety performance using both leading and lagging indicators. Safety performance has traditionally been measured with only lagging indicators that have included recordable injury rates, experience modification rates, days-away-restricted-transferred, among many others. Unfortunately these indicators …

Resource Competition, Space Use And Forage Ecology Of Sea Otters, Enhydra Lutris, In Southern Southeast Alaska, Zachary N. Hoyt Dec 2015

Resource Competition, Space Use And Forage Ecology Of Sea Otters, Enhydra Lutris, In Southern Southeast Alaska, Zachary N. Hoyt

Fisheries

The growing sea otter population in southern Southeast Alaska is impacting commercial shellfish, through foraging and expanding in range and abundance except where hunted for subsistence. Sea otters and their prey have coexisted in the North Pacific Ocean for approximately 750,000 years, but due to exploitation of sea otters from the 1770s until 1911, the species became extinct over much of its range, including southern Southeast Alaska. Subsequently, invertebrate species flourished and were commercially targeted in the late 1900s. Sea otters were relocated (n = 106) to southern Southeast Alaska in 1968. In this dissertation, I evaluated this marine mammal-fisheries …

The Effects Of Dietary Essential Fatty Acid Enrichment On The Nutrition And Condition Of Red King Crab (Paralithodes Camtschaticus) Larvae, Asia Beder Dec 2015

The Effects Of Dietary Essential Fatty Acid Enrichment On The Nutrition And Condition Of Red King Crab (Paralithodes Camtschaticus) Larvae, Asia Beder

Fisheries

Alaska red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) is a commercially valuable crab species in Alaska; however, six of the nine red king crab stocks in Alaska are depleted and have failed to recover even after closures of the fisheries. Hatchery rearing is being explored as a possibility for rehabilitating these stocks. In Chapter 1, I review the importance of diet, particularly fatty acids (FAs), when raising crustacean larvae in hatcheries. Long-chain polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) are important in molting success, growth, ability to handle stress, and overall survival of crustaceans. Specifically, when the FAs docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), …

Physiological Effects Of The Parasite Ichthyophonus On Spawning Chinook Salmon And Their Offspring In A Yukon River Tributary, Theresa Floyd-Rump Dec 2015

Physiological Effects Of The Parasite Ichthyophonus On Spawning Chinook Salmon And Their Offspring In A Yukon River Tributary, Theresa Floyd-Rump

Fisheries

In recent years, Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha returns to the Yukon River, Alaska, have been substantially reduced. In summer 2010-2012, spawning Chinook salmon (n=51, 32, and 23, respectively) were collected from the Salcha River, a tributary of the Yukon River, to determine the effects of Ichthyophonus, a protozoan parasite, on salmon reproductive success. Eggs and milt from Ichthyophonus-infected and non-infected parents were collected in 2010 and cross-fertilized to investigate offspring survival and potential second-generation effects induced by the parasite. Proximate composition analysis of adult muscle, eggs, and alevins, and blood chemistry analysis of adult blood plasma and alevin whole body …

Sound And Human Impacts On Beluga Whales In Cook Inlet, Alaska, Rachael E. Blevins Dec 2015

Sound And Human Impacts On Beluga Whales In Cook Inlet, Alaska, Rachael E. Blevins

Fisheries

Cook Inlet beluga whales (CIBs) are a geographically and genetically isolated population residing in Cook Inlet, Alaska year round. The population declined by approximately 50% between 1994 and 1998 and was listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act in 2008. The original decline was attributed to overharvest; however, the population has failed to rebound despite the virtual absence of harvest since 1998. This suggests that other factors, such as declining prey availability, increased predation, contaminants, disease, climate change, catastrophic events, habitat loss, unauthorized take, and underwater noise pollution, may be limiting the population's recovery. The goal of this dissertation …

Development And Preliminary Evaluation Of A Spray Deposition Sensing System For Improving Pesticide Application, Melissa A. Kesterson, Joe D. Luck, Michael P. Sama

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

An electronic, resistance-based sensor array and data acquisition system was developed to measure spray deposition from hydraulic nozzles. The sensor surface consisted of several parallel tin plated copper traces of varying widths with varying gap widths. The system contained an embedded microprocessor to monitor output voltage corresponding to spray deposition every second. In addition, a wireless module was used to transmit the voltage values to a remote laptop. Tests were conducted in two stages to evaluate the performance of the sensor array in an attempt to quantify the spray deposition. Initial tests utilized manual droplet placement on the sensor surface …

Understanding Reservoir Engineering Aspects Of Shale Gas Development On The Alaska North Slope, Anna Nyulund Dec 2015

Understanding Reservoir Engineering Aspects Of Shale Gas Development On The Alaska North Slope, Anna Nyulund

Engineering

Horizontal drilling and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing made it possible to develop US shale resources. Shublik shale is one of such US shale resources - it is one of the largest source rocks for hydrocarbon accumulations located on the Alaska North Slope. This study used the workflow introduced by Mirzaei and Cipolla in 2012 to investigate the effects of fracturing fluid flowback; shale porosity; matrix, fracture and unpropped zone permeability; hydraulic fracture spacing; permeability anisotropy; non-Darcy flow; gas adsorption/desorption using the complex-fracture-network model, referred to as an Unconventional Fracture Model (UFM), and Voronoi grid on well performance in the Shublik shale …

Investigating Marine Particle Distributions And Processes Using In Situ Optical Imaging In The Gulf Of Alaska, Jessica S. Turner Dec 2015

Investigating Marine Particle Distributions And Processes Using In Situ Optical Imaging In The Gulf Of Alaska, Jessica S. Turner

Marine Biology

The Gulf of Alaska is a seasonally productive ecosystem surrounded by glaciated coastal mountains with high precipitation. With a combination of high biological production, inputs of suspended sediments from glacial runoff, and contrasting nutrient regimes in offshore and shelf environments, there is a great need to study particle cycling in this region. I measured the concentrations and size distributions of large marine particles (0.06-27 mm) during four cruises in 2014 and 2015 using the Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP). The UVP produces high resolution depth profiles of particle concentrations and size distributions throughout the water column, while generating individual images of …

Influence Of Physical And Biological Oceanography On The Structure Of The Seabird Community In The Northeastern Chukchi Sea, Adrian E. Gall Dec 2015

Influence Of Physical And Biological Oceanography On The Structure Of The Seabird Community In The Northeastern Chukchi Sea, Adrian E. Gall

Marine Biology

The Chukchi Sea is losing seasonal ice cover as global temperatures rise, facilitating human access to the region for activities such as oil and gas exploration, shipping, and tourism. Processes and responses to environmental change by marine ecosystems are often challenging to quantify because they are hidden under water. Seabirds, however, offer visible evidence of the health and status of marine ecosystems. I studied the community structure, variability in abundance and distribution, and habitat associations of seabirds in the eastern Chukchi Sea. My results provide insights into the influence of climate change on seabirds and a benchmark against which to …

Predictors Of Improvement In Risk Reduction Skills Among Hiv Infected Drug Users, Rashmi Dahal Dec 2015

Predictors Of Improvement In Risk Reduction Skills Among Hiv Infected Drug Users, Rashmi Dahal

Master's Theses

Background and Objective: Unsafe needle use and unprotected sex are behaviors that have been associated with HIV transmission. Evidence-based behavioral intervention approaches are widely available for preventing HIV transmission, but neurocognitive impairment (NCI) may impede many intervention participants’ capacity to fully benefit from such interventions, leaving them vulnerable to HIV transmission risk. This study examines the impact of NCI on specific intervention outcomes expected to be enhanced through intervention participation.

Methods: Participants were 74 HIV+ opioid-dependent persons participating in methadone maintenance drug treatment and who reported drug- or sex- related HIV risk behavior. Using regression analyses, NCI, HIV knowledge (information), …

"I Don't Think Of All The Misery, But Of The Beauty That Still Remains": Holocaust Education In The Music Classroom, Kathryn Eileen Stiadle

Honors Theses

On June 26, 2014, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett signed a law requiring mandatory Holocaust and Genocide education in all Pennsylvania schools. This legislation, the result of efforts made by Holocaust author and advocated Rhonda Fink-Whitman, made Pennsylvania the sixth state to require Holocaust and Genocide education. However, the law does not state how to teach about this rather difficult topic. According to anthropologist and ethnomusicologist Alan Merriam, one of the functions of music in any society is "emotional expression." Because music gives us the ability to convey emotions in a way that speech perhaps cannot, it is a beneficial tool …
