Interhemispheric communication may be constrained as brain size increases because of transmission delays in action potentials over the length of axons. Although one might expect larger brains to have progressively thicker axons to compensate, spatial packing is a limiting factor. Axon size distributions within the primate corpus callosum (CC) may provide insights into how these demands affect conduction velocity. We used electron microscopy to explore phylogenetic variation in myelinated axon density and diameter of the CC from 14 different anthropoid primate species, including humans. The majority of axons were less than 1 µm in diameter across all species, indicating that …

Riparian plants incorporate nitrogen (N) from aquatic, terrestrial, and atmospheric sources, and their stable isotope compositions (δ15 N) may reflect land use impacts on N sources and transformations over scales of sites to watersheds. We surveyed leaf δ15 N values of 11 common riparian tree, shrub, and herbaceous species from 20 streams and rivers spanning three fifth-order watersheds in northern Utah, USA (n - 255 sites and 819 leaf samples). Streams spanned undeveloped montane forests to suburban, urban, and agricultural lands. Mean species-specific differences in leaf δ15N values were relatively small within sites (1.2 ± 2.2‰), …

Tumor cell adhesion to the microvessel wall is a critical step during tumor metastasis. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a secretion of tumor cells, can increase microvessel permeability and tumor cell adhesion in the microvessel. To test the hypothesis that inhibiting permeability increase can reduce tumor cell adhesion, we used in vivo fluorescence microscopy to measure both microvessel permeability and adhesion rates of human mammary carcinoma MDA-MB-231 cells in post-capillary venules of rat mesentery under the treatment of VEGF and a cAMP analog, 8-bromo-cAMP, which can decrease microvessel permeability. By immunostaining adherens junction proteins between endothelial cells forming the microvessel …

The Shroud of Turin (hereafter the Shroud) is one of the most widely known and widely studied artifacts in existence, with enormous historical and religious significance. For years, the Shroud has inspired worldwide interest in images on its fabric which appear to be of the body and face of a man executed in a manner consistent with crucifixion, and many believe that …

Effects Of Quinolones On Hemolymph Enzymes Of Chinese Mitten Crab, Eriocheir Sinensis, Wang Haichao, Zhang Xingtao, Dong Zeng, Wu Xiao
Food and Machinery
Norfloxacin, ofloxacin and enorfloxacin, the most common used quinolones in aquaculture, were evaluated for the effects on hemolymph enzymes of Chinese mitten crab, Eriocheir sinensis. The hemolymphs were collected at regular time for detection of phenoloxidase(PO), peroxidase(POD), alkaline phosphatase(ALP), lysozyme(LSZ), superoxide dismutase(SOD), glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase(AST) and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase(ALT) after Chinese mitten crab were injected intramuscularly with quinolones at concentration of 5 μg/kg. The results showed that activity of PO, POD, ALP, LSZ and SOD increased respectively(P<0.05), and the effect of enorfloxacin experimental group was very obvious(P<0.01), and decreased to the normal levels as the control group at 96 h. The activity of AST and ALT after quinolones injection showed significantly lower during the experimental period(P<0.05). These results indicated that quinolones did not result in inhibition on hemolymph immune enzyme and damage on viscera organs. Moreover, quinolones showed immune enhancement on at concentration of 5 μg/kg.

Study On Food Nutrition Of Left-Behind Children By Latent Class Model, Zhang Zhenxia
Food and Machinery
The latent class model was used to study the special group of children who lacked food nutrition, the left behind children, and the effects were also studied, including the food nutritional status and the individuals genetic and the food and nutrition intake, mothers care, and basic medical and health services. Through research and analysis, two groups of children who were left behind were identified, the food nutrition malnutrition and the food nutrition condition good, and the proportion of malnourished children was higher with 69.4%. In the Two groups of left behind children, the main difference lies in the mother care, …

Reseach On Quality Changes During Fruit Development Of Chayote, Li Yu, Qin Wen, Du Xiaoqin, Liu Ji
Food and Machinery
The changes of growth phase and quality indicators during different growth stages of chayote were measured and analyzed. The results indicated that the growth curve of chayote showed single sigmoid pattern and the trends of quality indicators were different with fruit development dynamics. Respiration rate decreased rapidly with fruit development and respiration peak appeared at maturity; the contents of Vc, chlorophyll and hydrolysis amino acids were higher during the young fruit development, then decreased to a low level; while cellulose content and hardness showed the opposite trends. The fruit had fully grown with higher content of amino acids, lower respiratory …

Comparative Study On Germination Characteristics For Different Varieties Of Unpolished Coix Seed And Optimization Of Germinated Technological Conditions, Dang Juan, Qin Likang, Yang Xianlong, Jin Yi
Food and Machinery
This comparative study to analyze the changes in physiological and biochemical in the same condition by unpolished coix seed of 5 varieties that have been produced in Guizhou or Laos, selecting out optimal germination of varieties, then optimizing the germination rate and germination by using γ-amino butyric acid(GABA) as evaluation index, using single factor experiment and orthogonal design methods, tracing its main nutrients and functional components dynamically. The results showed that the sprouts of GZ-1 from Guizhou had the highest germination rate, free amino acids and γ-amino butyric acid (GABA) levels among the five varieties. Based on the sprouting rate …

Representative Bureaucracy And Youth Violence In Juvenile Detention Facilities, Ginger Silvera

This exploratory study uses the representative bureaucracy theory to consider the racial representative role, which suggests that administrators who are minorities are more inclined to represent minority interests. This research examined if racial identity and gender was related to detention officers' perceptions of themselves as advocates for same race and same gender to incarcerated youth and to understand what they perceive are the causes for youth violence. A qualitative study was done on individuals who worked with inmates at the Los Angeles County juvenile detention facilities. The grounded theory approach was used for data analysis by observing common responses among …

Introduction and objective: Prosthetic hip-associated cobalt toxicity (PHACT) is a rare cause of cobalt toxicity from metal-on metal (MoM) total hip prosthesis. There are few reports of PHACT and only one case report from our review that reported tremor as a presenting symptom (7).
Case presentation: This is a report of a 44 year old male with history of hip replacement. He presented to PCP with progressive worsening of muscle weakness, fatigue and tremor of two months duration. After an extensive work up was performed and reviewing current literature, serum cobalt level was eventually performed and was found to be …

Velamentous Cord: A Dangerous Case Complicated By A Rural Population, Adam Franks, Md, Carolyn Curtis, Md, Shawndra Barker, Md
Marshall Journal of Medicine
A velamentous cord insertion occurs when the umbilical cord’s Wharton jelly fails to reach the placenta, due to early placental atrophy around the insertion site, leaving a segment of unprotected vessels running through the thin membranes of the amniotic sac. This area of weakness exposes a threat to the well-being of the fetus through acute hemorrhage and both acute and chronic restriction of nutrition. With advances in technology, resolution capabilities of ultrasounds allow for antenatal diagnosis, when previously this was impossible. With this knowledge, considerations for screening and management of this pathology are essential when dealing with a rural population …
