A Review Of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation And Multimodal Neuroimaging To Characterize Post-Stroke Neuroplasticity, Angela M. Auriat, Jason L. Neva, Sue Peters, Lara A. Boyd Oct 2015

A Review Of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation And Multimodal Neuroimaging To Characterize Post-Stroke Neuroplasticity, Angela M. Auriat, Jason L. Neva, Sue Peters, Lara A. Boyd

Physical Therapy Publications

Following stroke, the brain undergoes various stages of recovery where the central nervous system can reorganize neural circuitry (neuroplasticity) both spontaneously and with the aid of behavioral rehabilitation and non-invasive brain stimulation. Multiple neuroimaging techniques can characterize common structural and functional stroke-related deficits, and importantly, help predict recovery of function. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) typically reveals increased overall diffusivity throughout the brain following stroke, and is capable of indexing the extent of white matter damage. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) provides an index of metabolic changes in surviving neural tissue after stroke, serving as a marker of brain function. The neural …

Impact Of Natural Organic Matter On Particle Behavior And Phototoxicity Of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles, Shibin Li, Hongbo Ma, Lindsay K. Wallis, Matthew A. Etterson, Benjamin Riley, Dale J. Hoff, Stephen A. Diamond

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Due to their inherent phototoxicity and inevitable environmental release, titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nano- TiO2) are increasingly studied in the field of aquatic toxicology. One of the particular interests is the interactions between nano-TiO2 and natural organic matter (NOM). In this study, a series of experiments was conducted to study the impacts of Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM) on phototoxicity and particle behaviors of nano-TiO2. For Daphnia magna, after the addition of 5 mg/L SRNOM, LC50 value decreased significantly from 1.03 (0.89–1.20) mg/L to 0.26 (0.22–0.31) mg/L. For zebrafish larvae, phototoxic LC50 values were …

Strengthening Executive Function Development For Students With Add, Lori Desautels

Scholarship and Professional Work – Education

What are the root causes of Attention Deficit Disorder in our children and youth, and how do we address these challenges? According to the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 11 percent of children in the United States age 4-17 (6.4 million) have been diagnosed with ADHD as of 2011.

Dr. Russell Barkley, clinical professor of psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina and medical expert in ADD, shares that this disorder is primarily about emotional regulation and self-control. It is not just about inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Emotional regulation, which is foundational to social, emotional, and …

On Flavonoid Accumulation In Different Plant Parts: Variation Patterns Among Individuals And Populations In The Shore Campion (Silene Littorea), José C. Del Valle, Mª Luisa Buide, Inés Casimiro-Soriguer, Justen B. Whittall, Eduardo Narbona Oct 2015

On Flavonoid Accumulation In Different Plant Parts: Variation Patterns Among Individuals And Populations In The Shore Campion (Silene Littorea), José C. Del Valle, Mª Luisa Buide, Inés Casimiro-Soriguer, Justen B. Whittall, Eduardo Narbona

Biology

The presence of anthocyanins in flowers and fruits is frequently attributed to attracting pollinators and dispersers. In vegetative organs, anthocyanins and other non-pigmented flavonoids such as flavones and flavonols may serve protective functions against UV radiation, cold, heat, drought, salinity, pathogens, and herbivores; thus, these compounds are usually produced as a plastic response to such stressors. Although, the independent accumulation of anthocyanins in reproductive and vegetative tissues is commonly postulated due to differential regulation, the accumulation of flavonoids within and among populations has never been thoroughly compared. Here, we investigated the shore campion (Silene littorea, Caryophyllaceae) which exhibits …

Using Auditory Feedback To Teach Dance Skills To Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, Aracely Abreu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of auditory feedback for teaching individuals with intellectual disabilities the “Mississippi Cha Cha Slide.” Participants consisted of six males ages 35 to 61. During baseline, line dance skills were low for all participants. During the auditory feedback intervention, the trainer used a clicker to reinforce dance steps and forward chaining to chain movements into a sequence. Once auditory feedback was implemented, line dance skills increased substantially for all participants. Generalization assessments for four of the participants resulted in performance levels similar to baseline and demonstrate the need for future training …

In Vitro Mutational Analysis Of The Β2 Adrenergic Receptor, An In Vivo Surrogate Odorant Receptor, Sophie Jamet, Jaclyn Bubnell, Patrick Pfister, Delia Tomoiaga, Matthew E. Rogers, Paul Feinstein

Publications and Research

Many G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), such as odorant receptors (ORs), cannot be characterized in heterologous cells because of their difficulty in trafficking to the plasma membrane. In contrast, a surrogate OR, the GPCR mouse β2-adrenergic-receptor (mβ2AR), robustly traffics to the plasma membrane. We set out to characterize mβ2AR mutants in vitro for their eventual use in olfactory axon guidance studies. We performed an extensive mutational analysis of mβ2AR using a Green Fluorescent Protein-tagged mβ2AR (mβ2AR::GFP) to easily assess the extent of its plasma membrane localization. In order to characterize mutants for their ability to successfully transduce ligand-initiated signal cascades, we …

Premature Mortality From Cardiovascular Disease In The Americas - Will The Goal Of A Decline Of "25% By 2025" Be Met?, Pedro Ordunez, Elisa Prieto-Lara, Vilma Pinheiro Gawryszewski, Anselm J.M. Hennis, Richard S. Cooper

Faculty Publications

Background Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the underlying cause 1.6 million deaths per year in the Americas, accounting for 30% of total mortality and 38% of by non-communicable deaths diseases (NCDs). A 25% reduction in premature mortality due four main NCDs was targeted by the 2011 High-level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of NCDs. While overall CVD mortality fell in the Americas during the past decade, trends in premature CVD mortality during the same period have not been described, particularly in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. Methods This is a population-based trend-series study …
