Auditory Processing And Linguistic Prosody As Cross-Linguistic Precursors In Reading Development, Wei-Lun Chung Nov 2015

Auditory Processing And Linguistic Prosody As Cross-Linguistic Precursors In Reading Development, Wei-Lun Chung

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Little is known about the role of prosody in word reading. Mandarin-English bilingual speakers who speak Mandarin as a first language (L1) and English as a second language (L2) are particularly interesting because they must acquire two segmental/phonology systems (Mandarin has simpler syllable structures than does English), linguistic prosody systems (Mandarin tone and English stress), and orthographic systems (Chinese characters and English alphabet). The two papers included in the dissertation implemented correlational designs to examine the contributions of prosodic awareness and other variables to word reading in adult Mandarin-speaking English learners and Mandarin-English bilingual children. The first paper examined English …

Revising The U.S. Vertical Merger Guidelines: Policy Issues And An Interim Guide For Practitioners, Steven C. Salop, Daniel P. Culley Nov 2015

Revising The U.S. Vertical Merger Guidelines: Policy Issues And An Interim Guide For Practitioners, Steven C. Salop, Daniel P. Culley

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Mergers and acquisitions are a major component of antitrust law and practice. The U.S. antitrust agencies spend a majority of their time on merger enforcement. The focus of most merger review at the agencies involves horizontal mergers, that is, mergers among firms that compete at the same level of production or distribution.

Vertical mergers combine firms at different levels of production or distribution. In the simplest case, a vertical merger joins together a firm that produces an input (and competes in an input market) with a firm that uses that input to produce output (and competes in an output market). …

Basal Salivary Oxytocin And Skin To Skin Contact Among Lactating Mothers Of Premature Infants, Jessica Marie Gordon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation research explored mechanisms of human milk (HM) expulsion by describing the effects of skin to skin contact (SSC) on maternal basal oxytocin (OT) secretion among 20 premature mothers with hospitalized premature infants. This one-group, repeated measures design consisted of: 1) daily SSC with covariant data via self-report diary and 2) maternal salivary OT with and without SSC at 4 time points were collected over a 7 day time frame. Results indicate that mean levels of basal OT increase over time (M 234 pg/ml, SD 108 pg/ml time point 1; M 257 pg/ml, SD 125 pg/ml time point 3). …

Adolescent Females With High-Functioning Asd: Self And Mothers’ Perspectives Of Their School And Social Experiences, Lindsey Land Nov 2015

Adolescent Females With High-Functioning Asd: Self And Mothers’ Perspectives Of Their School And Social Experiences, Lindsey Land

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is currently 1 in 68 (Centers for Disease Control, 2015) and research in this area is growing, high-functioning individuals on the spectrum are often overlooked. This is because of their relatively milder symptoms. The recent collapse of Asperger Syndrome (AS) with autism in the most recent version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5; APA, 2013) also has obscured the differences that may exist between those with higher vs. lower levels of functioning. Among youth with High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (HFASD), girls are a particularly understudied and potentially vulnerable group. Previous research …

Parent Predictors Of Social-Emotional Strengths In Kindergartners, Kayla Nicole Larosa Nov 2015

Parent Predictors Of Social-Emotional Strengths In Kindergartners, Kayla Nicole Larosa

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Strengths-based assessment is providing an alternative to the typical way that psychologists approach mental health in the literature. Social-emotional strengths are multidimensional, positive indicators of mental health that include Social Competence, Self-Regulation, Empathy, and Responsibility. Limited research has been conducted to examine the potential connection between parental involvement in children’s education, specifically in the areas of supporting a child’s learning at home, parental involvement within educational settings, and parenting practices (discipline, Monitoring, use of Praise and Incentives) in connection with social-emotional strengths. With an emphasis on prevention of mental health problems, parents are an important and potentially untapped resource for …

Priming, Rap News And Public Diplomacy: Reporting On An Ngo-Led Media Initiative In Uganda, Lee Shaker, Paul Falzone

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mediated public diplomacy campaigns are proliferating around the world. Governments are joined by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), terrorists, and others that seek to effect change on the international stage by speaking directly to global populations. As these initiatives spread, they also use new and creative communication tactics. This study contributes to the evolving public diplomacy literature in two key ways. First, it explores the design and effects of an NGO-led intervention that employs a novel message format—rap news—in Uganda. Second, it reports on the integration of priming theory and entertainment-education strategies into this intervention and its evaluation. Experimental results indicate that …

Abstract While Amazonian forests are extraordinarily diverse, the abundance of trees is skewed strongly towards relatively few ‘hyperdominant’ species. In addition to their diversity, Amazonian trees are a key component of the global carbon cycle, assimilating and storing more carbon than any other ecosystem on Earth. Here we ask, using a unique data set of 530 forest plots, if the functions of storing and producing woody carbon are concentrated in a small number of tree species, whether the most abundant species also dominate carbon cycling, and whether dominant species are characterized by specific functional traits. We find that dominance of …

A Novel Plant Cell Culture Platform For Semicontinous Production Of Recombinant Proteins: Butyrylcholinesterase As A Case Study, Jasmine Corbin, Bryce Hashimoto, Kalimuthu Karuppanan, Raymond Rodriguez, Somen Nandi, Brian Roberts, Amy Noe, Karen Mcdonald

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

In this paper we describe a novel biomanufacturing production platform that utilizes transgenic rice cell suspension cultures for efficient semicontinuous cell culture (SCC) production of recombinant proteins. The production platform utilizes a metabolically regulated promoter, a secretion signal peptide that enables secretion out of the cell for ease of recovery/purification, coupled with an efficient semicontinuous operational strategy that allows independent optimization of growth and production phases. In addition, long term operation (up several months1) is possible by maintaining viable biomass within the bioreactor, thereby reducing the need for long seed trains, as well as minimizing turn-around time, CIP …

Evaluation Of Mammography Screening And Awareness Health Promotion Interventions Targeting Women With Disabilities: A Systematic Literature Review, Frances Irene Esquibel Nov 2015

Evaluation Of Mammography Screening And Awareness Health Promotion Interventions Targeting Women With Disabilities: A Systematic Literature Review, Frances Irene Esquibel

Public Administration ETDs

Research evaluating the effectiveness of health promotion interventions that aim to increase mammography utilization and or awareness among women with disabilities is extremely limited. The purpose of this thesis was to systematically review the literature that does exist, and examine the effectiveness and methodological rigor of various health promotion interventions, that aim to increase mammography utilization among women with disabilities. This thesis followed a five-step systematic review process: framing of the research question, identification of relevant work, extraction of relevant data on outcomes and quality, summarization of evidence, and interpretation of evidence. The sample consisted of eight articles that were …

Optimal Control Of A Continuous Bioreactor For Maximized Beta-Carotene Production, Nazmul Karim, Jonathan Raftery, Xinghua Pan Nov 2015

Optimal Control Of A Continuous Bioreactor For Maximized Beta-Carotene Production, Nazmul Karim, Jonathan Raftery, Xinghua Pan

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

Carotenes such as β-carotene have a positive impact in human health as a precursor of vitamin A. Structural complexity of these compounds makes their chemical synthesis a difficult endeavor, facilitating the need for their biological production. Continuous operation can be used in these processes to allow for increased cell viability through the mitigation of substrate and product inhibition, thereby increasing the productivity of the carotenoid product. This work looks to examine the operating conditions necessary to achieve the maximum production of the desired carotenoid products when produced via continuous operation. First, a two-level parameter estimation method is utilized to develop …

Upstream Perfusion Process: Back To The Future, Jean-Marc Bielser, Henri Kornmann, Herve Broly Nov 2015

Upstream Perfusion Process: Back To The Future, Jean-Marc Bielser, Henri Kornmann, Herve Broly

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

At an early stage of bioprocess science, continuous operations were the workhorse in the industry. Therefore, EMD-Serono has legacy with continuous upstream processes as many of its molecules such as Rebif are being produced in perfusion mode. These processes from the 90’s consume large volumes of commercial media and demonstrate low productivities. Cells are mainly attached because no performant cell retention device existed for cells in suspension at that time.

Around 10-15 years ago, the industry decided to move on fed-batch operations. EMD-Serono also re-oriented towards fed-batch operations. Molecules such as Erbitux are now being produced in 15,000 L stainless …

Strategy For Scaling Semi-Continuous Downstream And Integration Of Process Analytical Tools For Monoclonal Antibody Toxicology, Darshini Shah, Rebecca Chmielowski, Colette Cutler, Hong Li, David Roush, Nihal Tugcu Nov 2015

Strategy For Scaling Semi-Continuous Downstream And Integration Of Process Analytical Tools For Monoclonal Antibody Toxicology, Darshini Shah, Rebecca Chmielowski, Colette Cutler, Hong Li, David Roush, Nihal Tugcu

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

Currently, continuous processing for biologics is being pursued from a technology perspective in order to increase productivity and decrease cost of manufacture. Disruptive technologies, such as PCC (Periodic Counter-current Chromatography), have been researched extensively in order to reduce the bottleneck for the downstream capture chromatography step. However, there is extremely limited knowledge in how to scale these disruptive technologies for clinical and commercial manufacturing. In this presentation, we demonstrate a strategy for scaling and integration of a PCC capture step into a semi-continuous downstream process (Protein A chromatography-Viral inactivation-Filtration-Anion exchange chromatography). Harvest cell culture fluid (HCCF) feed streams ranging from …

Exometabolome Characterization Of High Cell Density Culture Perfusion And Optimization Of The Cell Specific Perfusion Rate, Veronique Chotteau, Leila Zamani, Ye Zhang, Magnus Aberg, Anna Lindahl, Axel Mie Nov 2015

Exometabolome Characterization Of High Cell Density Culture Perfusion And Optimization Of The Cell Specific Perfusion Rate, Veronique Chotteau, Leila Zamani, Ye Zhang, Magnus Aberg, Anna Lindahl, Axel Mie

Integrated Continuous Biomanufacturing II

High cell density perfusion has the potential to generate intensified processes. A target for such perfusion process can be to maintain a steady state culture around 100 x 106 cells/mL. A challenge for the development of these processes is to minimize the medium consumption, to reduce the costs associated with this raw material and with the harvest processing. This is particularly true for processes at densities such as 100 x 106 cells/mL for which several reactor volumes per day are typically necessary.

We have shown that cell specific perfusion rate (CSPR) is an approach, which has proven to …
