The Corporate Criminal As Scapegoat, Brandon L. Garrett Jan 2015

The Corporate Criminal As Scapegoat, Brandon L. Garrett

Faculty Scholarship

A corporation is no scapegoat, assures the Department of Justice, because the first priority is to prosecute culpable individuals and not artificial entities. Yet, as I document in this empirical study, far more often than not, when the largest corporations settle federal criminal cases, no individuals are charged. High profile failures to prosecute executives in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis have only made the problem more urgent. The corporation appears to be a kind of a scapegoat: impossible to physically jail, but capable of receiving blame and punishment while individual culprits go free. In this Article, I develop …

The Research Circle - A Place For Interdisciplinary Learning, Sharing And Networking To Develop Facilitators Of Evidence-Based Practice, Martina Ingeborg Reinhold, Sango Otieno

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Health Professional programs incorporate the principles and methods of clinical research and evidence based medicine (EBM) into their curriculum to encourage evidence based practice in health care. However, many faculty that join health profession programs do so after having worked in clinical practice for some time with limited experience in clinical research and EBM making successful guidance of students difficult for some. This study describes implementation of the Research Circle at Grand Valley State University, where faculty from diverse disciplines such as physician assistant, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, radiology, and dietetics came together to share and learn basic …

Intra-Tester Reliability And Concurrent Validity Of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound And Vernier Calipre In Quantifying The Anteroposterior Diameter Of The Common Extensor Origin Of The Forearm And The Radial Nerve: A Cadaveric Study, Valentine Dones Iii, Ian P. Aguinaldo, Svetlana Maris Aycardo, Buena Fe Apepe

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Introduction: The literature reports an increase in anteroposterior diameter of the common extensor origin (CEO) of the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) and extensor digitorum communis (EDC) or the radial nerve in painful elbows diagnosed with lateral epicondylalgia (LE) or supinator syndrome. The edge-to-edge measurements of these anatomical structures are quantified using musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS). However, in the current literature, reports on the reliability and validity of MSUS measurements of the CEO (of ECRB and EDC) and the radial nerve are not found. In this study, reliability was measured for three testers in determining the anteroposterior diameter of the CEO …

Would You Choose To Be Happy? Tradeoffs Between Happiness And The Other Dimensions Of Life In A Large Population Survey, Matthew D. Adler, Paula Dolan, Georgios Kavetsos Jan 2015

Would You Choose To Be Happy? Tradeoffs Between Happiness And The Other Dimensions Of Life In A Large Population Survey, Matthew D. Adler, Paula Dolan, Georgios Kavetsos

Faculty Scholarship

A large literature documents the correlates and causes of subjective well-being, or happiness. But few studies have investigated whether people choose happiness. Is happiness all that people want from life, or are they willing to sacrifice it for other attributes, such as income and health? Tackling this question has largely been the preserve of philosophers. In this article, we find out just how much happiness matters to ordinary citizens. Our sample consists of nearly 13,000 members of the UK and US general populations. We ask them to choose between, and make judgments over, lives that are high (or low) in …

Democratic Rulemaking, John M. De Figueiredo, Edward H. Stiglitz Jan 2015

Democratic Rulemaking, John M. De Figueiredo, Edward H. Stiglitz

Faculty Scholarship

This paper examines to what extent agency rulemaking is democratic. It reviews theories of administrative rulemaking in light of two normative benchmarks: a “democratic” benchmark based on voter preferences, and a “republican” benchmark based on the preferences of elected representatives. It then evaluates how the empirical evidence lines up in light of these two approaches. The paper concludes with a discussion of avenues for future research.

A Qualitative Examination Of The Sport Music Preferences Of Ncaa Division I Athletes, Zachary Ryan Jan 2015

A Qualitative Examination Of The Sport Music Preferences Of Ncaa Division I Athletes, Zachary Ryan

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Athletes report listening to music prior to their sport participation for a number of reasons, including: mood-regulation, arousal control, and concentration (Laukka & Quick, 2011; Sorenson, Czech, Gonzalez, Klein, & Lachowetz, 2008; Stevens & Lane, 2001). Researchers have found that many athletes report their music preferences for everyday listening are different from what they listen to around sport participation (Laukka & Quick, 2011). Music preferences have been found to be related to both gender and aspects of an individual’s personality, such as aggression (Rentfrow & Gosling, 2003; Colley, 2008; Rubin, West, & Mitchell, 2001;). The purpose of the current study …

Determining The False Positive Rate Of A Concussion Battery In Healthy Division I Collegiate Athletes, Caitlynn S. Hellwig

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Context: Athletic participation accounts for 1.6-3.8 million concussions, or mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) every year in the United States. Accurate assessment and diagnosis of concussions is critical to protect athletes from further injury. The Fourth International Conference on Concussion in Sport Consensus Statement recommends a multifaceted concussion assessment which includes symptom inventories, postural stability assessment, and neurocognitive testing. The accuracy of each test is vital in correctly diagnosing concussions. The Balance Error Scoring System (BESS), Standardized Assessment of Concussion (SAC), and Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) are among the most commonly used assessment tools by NCAA athletic …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The following study explored the relationship between emotion regulation in children with and without externalizing behavior problems and their caregivers. The study examined emotion regulation in both clinical and comparison samples. The main research question for the study was determining if there was a link between parent and child emotion regulation in both clinical and comparison samples. Sixty families were collected from two rural populations in the United States. Families referred for parent training with children ages 2 through 8 were recruited for a clinical sample (n = 34) along with a nonclinical comparison group (n = 26). A blocking …

Impact Of Chronic Conditions On Treatment, Cancer-And Non-Cancer Outcomes Among Elderly Men With Incident Prostate Cancer, Amitkumar Dineshchandra Raval Jan 2015

Impact Of Chronic Conditions On Treatment, Cancer-And Non-Cancer Outcomes Among Elderly Men With Incident Prostate Cancer, Amitkumar Dineshchandra Raval

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Prostate Cancer is the most commonly observed non-skin cancer among the elderly men aged 65 years and older in the United States. Nearly one third of elderly men diagnosed with incident prostate cancer have pre-existing chronic conditions. Therefore, among elderly men with prostate cancer, management for cancer and chronic conditions should be optimized to improve healthcare outcomes. Previous literature majorly focused on the risk and management of cancer in the presence of number of conditions, although, it is known that more than 70% of chronic conditions among men diagnosed with prostate cancer were either cardio-metabolic, respiratory or mental health conditions. …

Chronic Stress, Depressive Symptoms And Peripheral Vascular Dysfunction: Fundamentals, Mechanisms, Sex Disparities, And Determinants Of Integrated Outcomes, Shyla Christine Stanley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Chronic, irresolvable psychological stress, a major contributor of depressive disorders, has been identified as a key factor involved in the tightly linked association between the prevalence/severity of depressive symptoms and the concurrent development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Furthermore, there are marked differences in the incidence and pathology of these diseases between males and females, although the underlying mechanisms involved are unclear. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the effects of chronic stress/depression on behavioral and vascular function in rodents in order to elucidate the underlying mechanisms linking depression symptom severity with cardiovascular development/outcome. The unpredictable chronic mild stress …

Three Essays On Financial Economics, Li Sun Jan 2015

Three Essays On Financial Economics, Li Sun

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation analyzes households' asset allocation decisions and studies how the financial crisis affects income distribution using panel datasets from household surveys. The first essay focuses on how the precautionary saving motive can affect households' asset allocation decisions. It develops a life-cycle model that explicitly accounts for the effects of potential future expenditure shocks; the implications of this model better match the empirically observed investment behaviors of households. A precautionary index is constructed to measure the adequacy of households' precautionary saving, and it is found that this factor has significant explanatory power regarding households' stock market participation and risky asset …

Cyanobacteria As Biological Drivers Of Lake Nitrogen And Phosphorus Cycling, Kathryn L. Cottingham, Holly A. Ewing, Meredith L. Greer, Cayelan C. Carey, Kathleen C. Weathers Jan 2015

Cyanobacteria As Biological Drivers Of Lake Nitrogen And Phosphorus Cycling, Kathryn L. Cottingham, Holly A. Ewing, Meredith L. Greer, Cayelan C. Carey, Kathleen C. Weathers

All Faculty Scholarship

Here we draw attention to the potential for pelagic bloom‐forming cyanobacteria to have substantial effects on nutrient cycling and ecosystem resilience across a wide range of lakes. Specifically, we hypothesize that cyanobacterial blooms can influence lake nutrient cycling, resilience, and regime shifts by tapping into pools of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) not usually accessible to phytoplankton. The ability of many cyanobacterial taxa to fix dissolved N2 gas is a well‐known potential source of N, but some taxa can also access pools of P in sediments and bottom waters. Both of these nutrients can be released to the water column …

The Role Of Mobile-Computing Self-Efficacy In Consumer Information Disclosure, Mark J. Keith, Jeffry Babb, Paul Benjamin Lowry, Christopher Furner, Amjad Abdullat

Faculty Publications

Smartphones are increasingly penetrating business and consumer markets, and mobile applications (apps) have engendered a large and innovative market. Whereas apps are useful, they also present new forms of privacy risk associated with users’ personal and location data. However, these dangers do not appear to increase the perceived risk or reduce the trust consumers demonstrate when using apps. Many information technology (IT) trust indicators are well documented, such as the quality of the IT, trust assurances, brand recognition and social influences. However, these traditional indicators appear to have a lesser impact on the adoption of mobile commerce via apps because …

A Novel Microbial Source Tracking Dna Microarray Used For Pathogen Detection In Environmental Systems, Xiang Li Jan 2015

A Novel Microbial Source Tracking Dna Microarray Used For Pathogen Detection In Environmental Systems, Xiang Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Pathogen detection and the identification of fecal contamination sources can be challenging in environmental and engineered treatment systems. Factors including pathogen diversity and ubiquity of fecal indicator bacteria hamper risk assessment and remediation of contamination sources. Therefore, a quick method that can detect and identify waterborne pathogens in environmental systems is needed. In this work, a custom microarray targeting pathogens (viruses, bacteria, protozoa), microbial source tracking (MST) markers, mitochondria DNA (mtDNA) and antibiotic resistance genes was used to detect over 430 selected gene targets in whole genome amplification (WGA) DNA and complementary DNA (cDNA) isolated from sewage and animal (avian, …

Drosophila Muller F Elements Maintain A Distinct Set Of Genomic Properties Over 40 Million Years Of Evolution, Adam Haberman Jan 2015

Drosophila Muller F Elements Maintain A Distinct Set Of Genomic Properties Over 40 Million Years Of Evolution, Adam Haberman

Biology: Faculty Scholarship

The Muller F element (4.2 Mb, ~80 protein-coding genes) is an unusual autosome of Drosophila melanogaster; it is mostly heterochromatic with a low recombination rate. To investigate how these properties impact the evolution of repeats and genes, we manually improved the sequence and annotated the genes on the D. erecta, D. mojavensis, and D. grimshawi F elements and euchromatic domains from the Muller D element. We find that F elements have higher transposon density (25%–50%) than euchromatic reference regions (3%–11%). Among the F elements, D. grimshawi has the lowest transposon density (particularly DINE-1: 2% versus 11%–27%). F element genes have …

Personal Budgets For All? Implementing Self-Directed Support In Mental Health Services, Sherrie Hitchen, Graham R. Williamson, Mary Watkins

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Personal budgets provide people with more choice and control over how their needs are met and, allied to new thinking concerning individualisation of mental health care, are increasingly a feature of international governmental responses to long-term care. This study was based in an English National Health Service Health and Social Care Trust covering a large predominantly rural area. We aimed to develop self-directed support and understand more fully service-user and carer involvement in the process, using an action research design. Data collection took place between 2007 and 2011, and the project ran in three sequential spirals collecting qualitative data. Findings …
