The Effect Of Oleic And Linoleic Acids On In Vitro Bovineembryonic Development And Embryo Quality, Tahi̇r Karaşahi̇n, Şevket Arikan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present study was aimed at the investigation of the effects of oleic and linoleic acid on the in vitro development of Anatolian native black crossbred bovine embryos. Following the in vitro maturation and fertilization of oocytes, embryonic development stages were monitored using embryo culture medium supplemented with three different doses of oleic and linoleic acid (10, 100, and 1000 µM). Examination of the culture media 48 h after fertilization demonstrated that linoleic acid had no effect on embryo cleavage rates, while oleic acid produced a significant increase in cleavage rates (P < 0.01). It was determined that the highest dose of linoleic acid (1000 µM) and all three doses of oleic acid significantly increased the proportion of cultured oocytes developing to the morula-blastocyst stage (P < 0.001). As a result, while oleic acid significantly increased (P < 0.001) the proportion of embryos developing to the morula-blastocyst stage, linoleic acid had limited effects on embryonic development and quality. Thus, it was concluded that the supplementation of Anatolian native black crossbred bovine embryo cultures with oleic acid may induce positive effects on embryonic development and quality.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was carried out to assess the effect of the chemical substances of Salix babylonica (SB) extract on in vitro rumen fermentation of five mixed rations with different maize silage to concentrate ratios. Fifty-nine compounds were identified in SB extract using the retention time and mass spectral technique. Interactive effects were noted (P < 0.001) for the asymptotic gas production (GP) (b), the rate of production (c), the initial delay before GP begins (L), pH, dry matter digestibility, metabolizable energy (ME), organic matter digestibility (OMD), short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), gas yield at 24 h (GY_{24}), microbial crude protein, and in vitro GP. Both 1.2 and 1.8 mL SB/g DM had the highest (P < 0.05) b and c values. Addition of 1.2 and 1.8 mL SB/g DM linearly improved (P < 0.001) ME, OMD, SCFAs, and GY24. It could be concluded that, based on the highly detected interaction effects between ration types and extract doses for fermentation parameters and GP, the most effective dose of SB varied between incubated total mixed rations. However, the ration of 25% silage and 75% concentrate had the highest nutritive value, especially at doses of 1.2 to 1.8 mL SB/g DM total mixed ration.

Impact Of B. Melitensis Rev-1 Vaccination On Brucellosis Prevalence, Adosinda Maria Coelho, Maria De Lurdes Pinto, Juan Garcia Diez, Ana Claudia Coelho

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, in the northeastern region of Portugal, previously exhibited the highest brucellosis prevalence in the entire small ruminant population of Portugal. Consequently, a vaccination program of the whole population with Brucella melitensis Rev-1 was carried out from 2001 to 2004, and further compulsory Rev-1 vaccination of 3- to 6-month-old lambs and kids was carried out between 2005 and 2007. The prevalence of brucellosis decreased by 71.42% in 2004, with a 2-fold decrease occurring from 2005 to 2007. The reduction of brucellosis prevalence was statistically significant (P < 0.001) according to flock size. By species, brucellosis prevalence decreased 14.5-fold in sheep and 5.5-fold in goats in 2004. Regarding flock constitution, it decreased by 77% for pure flocks and 73% in mixed flocks in 2004. Regarding the animals involved in production, brucellosis prevalence decreased during the 7-year period. It was concluded that Rev-1 vaccination of the whole population was effective in decreasing brucellosis prevalence. These results contribute to the scarce information available regarding the effect of Rev-1 vaccination on different characteristics of flocks. They may be used to improve the efficiency of brucellosis eradication programs within livestock management.

The results showed that mean plasma Na concentration was significantly (P < 0.05) different in female quails with respect to body size categories. The interaction between flocks and body size for plasma Ca levels was significant (P < 0.05) in both sexes of quails, whereas plasma Na was significant (P < 0.05) in female quails. The mean plasma P and K levels in imported and local flocks of Japanese quails were significantly (P < 0.05) different in female quails, whereas plasma Mg was significantly (P < 0.05) different in male quails. However, with respect to body size categories, plasma P, K, and Mg were significantly (P < 0.05) different in female quails only. The interaction between flocks and body size was significant for K and P in female quails and for plasma Mg levels in both sexes of quails.

The effects of supplementing broilers' diets with fermented cottonseed meal (FCSM) on the broilers' performance, apparent digestibility, carcass traits, and meat composition were studied. A total of 180 yellow-feathered chickens of 21 days old were randomly divided into three groups (six replicates of 10 broilers each): 1) a control group (Con), 2) a treatment group of FCSM by Candida tropicalis (Ct), and 3) a treatment group of FCSM by C. Tropicalis plus Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Ct-Sc). Results showed that FCSM supplementation improved the average daily gain and gain-to-feed ratio from the 43rd to 64th and the 21st to 64th day, respectively …

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationships between milk fatty acid group contents and subsequent reproductive performance in Holstein cows. A total of 27 cows in the 1st to 4th lactations were included in the evaluation. Cows were divided into primiparous and multiparous groups. Daily milk yields increased in the first 8 weeks of lactation. Body condition score decreased until the third month of lactation. As the cows gradually recovered from the negative energy balance, the contents of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) increased, whereas the contents of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) decreased. …

Changes In Arginase Activity And Ast Enzyme Levels In The Cardiac Andskeletal Muscle And Liver Of Lambs With White Muscle Disease, Başak Hanedan, Mi̇ne Eri̇şi̇r, Fati̇h Mehmet Kandemi̇r, Mustafa Özkaraca

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to evaluate arginase activity and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels in the tissues of the cardiac and skeletal muscle and liver of lambs with white muscle disease (WMD). The cardiac and skeletal muscle and liver tissues were obtained from 8 lambs with WMD and 9 apparently healthy lambs. The diagnosis of WMD was made with the detection of hyaline degeneration upon histopathological examination. A significant increase in arginase activity in the cardiac and skeletal muscle and liver tissues and a significant decrease in AST levels in the cardiac muscle were detected in the WMD group …
