Revisiting Community Water Fluoridation, Jessica Marie Seyfried Dec 2015

Revisiting Community Water Fluoridation, Jessica Marie Seyfried

Master's Theses

There is a bourgeoning controversy unknown to many surrounding one of the CDC’s top ten public health achievements of the 20th century. After more than 50 years of implementation, community water fluoridation may not have achieved the declines in caries rates we once thought or hoped for, especially in light of alternative approaches to preventing caries including but not limited to other sources of fluoride supplementation, changes in diet, and tooth brushing behavior.

In fact, a survey of past research highlights the fact that this policy decision may be based on out of date and/or a lack of research …

Predictive Modeling Of Fuel Efficiency Of Trucks, Srivatsa Bindingnolle Narasimha

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

This research studied the behavior of several controllable variables that affect the fuel efficiency of trucks. Re-routing is the process of modifying the parameters of the routes for a set of trips to optimize fuel consumption and also to increase customer satisfaction through efficient deliveries. This is an important process undertaken by a food distribution company to modify the trips to adapt to the immediate necessities. A predictive model was developed to calculate the change in Miles per Gallon (MPG) whenever a re-route is performed on a region of a particular distribution area. The data that was used, was from …

In Vitro Formation Of 8-Hydroxy-2'-Deoxyguanosine (8-Ohdg) In Calf Thymus Dna Upon Treatment Of 2'-Deoxyguanosine With Propyl Gallate And 2,6-Di-Tert-Butyl-P-Benzoquinone, Budiawan, Dwi Retno Widiastuti

Makara Journal of Science

Oxidative DNA damage caused by propyl gallate (PG) and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-benzoquinone (BHT-quinone, a metabolite of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)) was analyzed from the 8-hydroxy-2¢-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) formation in calf thymus DNA and DNA base, 2¢-deoxyguanosine (dG). PG in the presence of CuCl2 increased the 8-OHdG formation in calf thymus DNA by around 9.17 times as compared to the control (untreated DNA). In the presence of CuCl2 at 1.28×10-5 M, the 8-OHdG per dG ratio resulting from the reaction of dG with PG at various concentrations (20–150 ppm) ranged from 75.50 to 312.06 8-OHdG per 105 dG. The 8-OHdG formation increased when the PG …

Co-Digestion Of Sorghum Stalk And Sludge For Biogas Production, Muhammad Romli, Aulia Anggraini, Purwoko, Suprihatin

Makara Journal of Science

The recycling of residual agricultural biomass using anaerobic digestion allows for the recovery of biomass carbon and nutrients as sources of energy and fertilizer. The obstacles that are encountered in this process include the lignocellulosic structure of biomass tissue and its high carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratio. This study evaluates the co-digestion system of pretreated sorghum stalks and wastewater sludge. The stalks were pretreated by partial bio-oxidation to improve their bacterial accessibility. The digesters were fed a mixture of stalk and sludge at ratios of 100:0, 80:20, 60:40, and 40:60 (total solids [TS] basis). The digesters were run in batches at 35-36 …

Comparison Of Immobilized Metal Affinity Chromatography Ni-Nta And Co-Talon For The Purification Of Recombinant Human Erythropoietin, Yana Rubiyana, Adi Santoso, Irmanida Batubara Dec 2015

Comparison Of Immobilized Metal Affinity Chromatography Ni-Nta And Co-Talon For The Purification Of Recombinant Human Erythropoietin, Yana Rubiyana, Adi Santoso, Irmanida Batubara

Makara Journal of Science

The purification of recombinant proteins is an important stage in biopharmaceutical research. A commonly used technique is immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC). One of the main advantages of this type of chromatography is that the column can easily be regenerated for subsequent purification work. The mechanism of IMAC is based on bonding between metal ions immobilized on a matrix with a specific amino acid. Because of the strong interactions of the electron donor group on the imidazole ring, histidine is often used in the IMAC purification system. Two types of commercial IMAC resin use a nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) matrix: a …

Expected Incomes As A Factor Of Entrepreneurship And A Firm Establishment Risk, Tomasz Bernat Dec 2015

Expected Incomes As A Factor Of Entrepreneurship And A Firm Establishment Risk, Tomasz Bernat

European Management Studies

Entrepreneurship takes a central place in the imagination of economists. It is one of the reasons for both growth and development of the economy as well as an individual human being. Determinants and market competences of entrepreneurs indicate the importance of income as a factor supporting the creation of enterprises or deciding on their market survival. Based on this background, the concept of the study was created: do people who want to earn more in the labor market declare entrepreneurship as a method of achieving this aim and do they declare and take the higher risk associated with it. This …

The Influence Of Lay Concepts And Causal Theories On Definitions Of Mental Illness And Social Outcomes, Kallen A. Bynum Dec 2015

The Influence Of Lay Concepts And Causal Theories On Definitions Of Mental Illness And Social Outcomes, Kallen A. Bynum

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Lay concepts and causal attribution theories enable lay people to make sense of their social situations, more specifically, their encounters with those suffering from mental disorders by providing informational frameworks and explanations upon which to interpret their circumstances. Thus, lay concepts and causal theories about mental illness play a role in beliefs and behaviors toward those individuals. The current study surveyed 113 undergraduate students to investigate relations between knowledge of mental illness as well as causal attributions and explicit stigma associated with depression and schizophrenia, such as perceived dangerousness and desire for social distance. Scores for schizophrenia and depression were …

Health Care Service Disparity: Factors Associated With The Distribution Of Primary Care Physicians, Robert L. Morgan Dec 2015

Health Care Service Disparity: Factors Associated With The Distribution Of Primary Care Physicians, Robert L. Morgan

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Primary care physicians operate on the front lines of health care. Although primary care physicians play a critical role in improving health outcomes, workforce trends in the United States show a growing shortage of primary care physicians as demand for primary care rises. In conveying the importance of primary care physicians, the worsening physician shortage, the inequitable distribution of providers, and the lackluster institutional response thus far, this paper calls into question the effectiveness of current indicators used to identify underserved areas and provide appropriate government assistance. Through the use of data from the 2010 census and American Medical Association …

Willingness To Take Prep And Potential For Risk Compensation Among Highly Sexually Active Gay And Bisexual Men, Christian Grov, Thomas H.F. Whitfield, H. Jonathan Rendina, Ana Ventuneac, Jeffrey T. Parsons

Publications and Research

Once-daily Truvada (Emtricitabine/Tenofovir) as a method of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is one of the most promising biomedical interventions to eliminate new HIV infections; however, uptake among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men has been slow amidst growing concern in popular/social media that PrEP use will result in reduced condom use (i.e., risk compensation). We investigated demographic, behavioral, and psychosocial differences in willingness to use PrEP as well as the perceived impact of PrEP on participants’ condom use in a sample of 206 highly sexually active HIV-negative gay and bisexual men. Nearly half (46.1%) said they would …

The Impact Of College Leadership Experiences On Long Term Well-Being, Kevin Meaney

Dissertations, 2014-2019

In an era when the debate surrounding the value of a college education seems solely focused on the earning power of graduates, colleges and universities must make a concerted effort to include additional outcomes in the discussion. One area of promise is the examination of the impact of various college experiences on long term well-being. Using a multiple analysis of variance, this study explored the influence of collegiate leadership experiences on long term well-being and meaningful work. Results revealed that students engaged in activities with focused leadership development reported higher levels of positive meaning in their work and higher levels …

The Effect Of The Dodd-Frank Act On Risk In The Financial Sector, Beatrix S. Haddon

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, commonly known as the Dodd-Frank Act, was passed in 2010 in an attempt to increase transparency and accountability in the financial system. The purpose of this thesis is to discover what effect, if any, the Dodd-Frank Act had on both systematic risk and total volatility in the financial sector. My study shows that while the legislation significantly reduced systematic risk in only one out of the seven industries within the financial sector in the time period I analyzed, it successfully reduced total volatility in all seven industries.
