Cigarette Tax To Fund Healthcare, Tobacco Use Prevention, Research, And Law Enforcement. Initiative Constitutional Amendment And Statute.
Initiatives
Increases cigarette tax by $2.00 per pack, with equivalent increase on other tobacco products and electronic cigarettes containing nicotine. Allocates revenues primarily to increase funding for existing healthcare programs; also for tobacco use prevention/control programs, tobacco-related disease research and law enforcement, University of California physician training, dental disease prevention programs, and administration. Excludes these revenues from Proposition 98 funding requirements. If tax causes decreased tobacco consumption, transfers tax revenues to offset decreases to existing tobacco-funded programs and sales tax revenues. Requires biennial audit. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local …

Effect Of Genetic Background On The Dystrophic Phenotype In Mdx Mice., William D Coley, Laurent Bogdanik, Maria Candida Vila, Qing Yu, Terence A Partridge, Kanneboyina Nagaraju, +12 Additional Authors
Genomics and Precision Medicine Faculty Publications
Genetic background significantly affects phenotype in multiple mouse models of human diseases, including muscular dystrophy. This phenotypic variability is partly attributed to genetic modifiers that regulate the disease process. Studies have demonstrated that introduction of the γ-sarcoglycan null allele onto the DBA/2J background confers a more severe muscular dystrophy phenotype than the original strain, demonstrating the presence of genetic modifier loci in the DBA/2J background. To characterize the phenotype of dystrophin deficiency on the DBA/2J background, we created and phenotyped DBA/2J-congenic Dmdmdx mice (D2-mdx) and compared them to the original, C57BL/10ScSn-Dmdmdx (B10-mdx) model. These strains were compared to their respective …

Low-Dose Vitamin K Can Improve Warfarin Control In Patients On Lvad Support, Daizo Tanaka, Venessa L. Kotch, Cheryl Abbas, Gordon Reeves, John Wc Entwistle Iii
Low-Dose Vitamin K Can Improve Warfarin Control In Patients On Lvad Support, Daizo Tanaka, Venessa L. Kotch, Cheryl Abbas, Gordon Reeves, John Wc Entwistle Iii
The VAD Journal
Background
Anticoagulation with oral vitamin K antagonists (VKA) is very important in patients supported on a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) to prevent thromboembolic complications. Some patients tolerate VKAs poorly and have an unstable INR as a result. It is reported that low-dose vitamin K can improve INR control in patients with an unstable INR in other clinical settings. We evaluated its safety and effectiveness in patients on LVAD support.
Methods
The records of all patients supported on an implantable LVAD between January, 2013 and March, 2014 were reviewed retrospectively to identify those who had received low-dose vitamin K while …

Objective: Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a genetic and degenerative motor neuron disease that affects muscle control including the muscles responsible for head and neck control and swallowing (Kesting, n. d.). There is limited research on the benefits of exercise as a therapeutic modality for people with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) (Swoboda et al., 2007) and no existing research specifically targeting pharyngeal or laryngeal strengthening to improve swallow function. As demonstrated by the positive outcome in this case study, speech-language pathologists should be aware that various modalities for dysphagia treatment such as biofeedback, neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), and an exercise …
Bacterial Community Dynamics In Marine Sponge Cinachyrella Kuekenthali Under Irradiance And Antibiotics, Nidhi Vijayan
Bacterial Community Dynamics In Marine Sponge Cinachyrella Kuekenthali Under Irradiance And Antibiotics, Nidhi Vijayan
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
The Marine sponge Cinachyrella sp used in this study are commonly found in offshore South Florida and Caribbean waters and appeared to be resilient in closed system aquaculture. Marine sponges host diverse bacterial symbionts that are distinct compared to bacteria found in ambient seawater, however the roles of a large fraction of the bacterial community in marine sponges are unknown. Comparison of symbiotic to aposymbiotic (bacteria-free) sponges could provide information about interactions (metabolic and physiologic) between the bacteria and sponge. In this study, a single Cinachyrella kuekenthali individual was subsectioned into explants (N=240) in order to provide identical bacterial communities …

The VAD Journal
Background: Next generation sequencing technology, coupled with population genetic databases, have made broad genetic evaluation relatively inexpensive and widely available. Our objective was to assess the prevalence of potentially damaging cancer and cardiac gene variants in advanced non-ischemic cardiomyopathy patients.
Methods: Explanted human heart tissue procured at LVAD placement was obtained from the University of Nebraska Medical Center Heart Tissue Bank. Genomic DNA was isolated from tissues and amplified by PCR using targeted ampliseq primer pools from an inherited disease panel. Individual libraries were amplified by emulsion PCR on Ion Sphere particles and sequencing was performed on a …

Progress Toward A Structure-Function Relationship For Novel, Small-Molecule Inhibitors Of Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1, Sarah Burke
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) is a serpin protein whose function is to inhibit tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) and urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA), and hence, fibrinolysis. This inhibition leads to decreased plasminogen to plasmin conversion, which results in deleterious effects on the organism, such as blood clots. Elevated levels of PAI-1 are implicated in a variety of diseases and conditions. We have synthesized a variety of novel, small-molecule PAI-1 inhibitors in order to establish a structure-function relationship throughout the compounds. This goal was accomplished through an iterative process in which only one aspect of the molecule was altered at a time. …

Sidestream Smoke Exposure Increases The Susceptibility Of Airway Epithelia To Adenoviral Infection, Priyanka Sharma, Abimbola O. Kolawole, Susan B. Core, Adriana E. Kajon, Katherine J.D.A. Excoffon
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: Although significant epidemiological evidence indicates that cigarette smoke exposure increases the incidence and severity of viral infection, the molecular mechanisms behind the increased susceptibility of the respiratory tract to viral pathogens are unclear. Adenoviruses are non-enveloped DNA viruses and important causative agents of acute respiratory disease. The Coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) is the primary receptor for many adenoviruses. We hypothesized that cigarette smoke exposure increases epithelial susceptibility to adenovirus infection by increasing the abundance of apical CAR. Methodology and Findings: Cultured human airway epithelial cells (CaLu-3) were used as a model to investigate the effect of sidestream cigarette …
Estimating Likelihood Of Having A Brca Gene Mutation Based On Family History Of Cancers And Recommending Optimized Cancer Preventive Actions, Mehrnaz Abdollahian
Estimating Likelihood Of Having A Brca Gene Mutation Based On Family History Of Cancers And Recommending Optimized Cancer Preventive Actions, Mehrnaz Abdollahian
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
BRCA1 and BRCA2 are gene mutations that drastically increase chances of developing breast and ovarian cancers, up to 20-fold, for women. A genetic blood test is used to detect BRCA mutations. Though these mutations occur in one of every 400 in the general population (excluding Ashkenazi Jewish ethnicity), they are present in most cases of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer patients. Hence, it is common practice for the physicians to require genetic testing for those that fit the rules as recommended by the National Cancer Comprehensive Network. However, data from the Myriad Laboratory, the only provider of the test until …
