A Comparative Analysis Of Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry And Stable Isotopes In Assessing Ancient Coastal Peruvian Diets, Theresa Jane Gilbertson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores a cross-cultural analysis of the dietary signatures of four coastal cultures of prehistoric Peru. A combination of elemental analysis based on portable x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (pXRF), testing trace elements presented in 209 individuals’ skulls representing the Nazca (38), Cañete (33), Lima (40), and Moche (98) valleys and/or cultures of the first millennium AD, is weighed in conjunction with isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) to analyze human bone collagen and bone apatite derived from a portion of the individuals represented in the Nazca, Cañete, and Lima cranial samples.
Evidence from the results of both tests are weighed using …
Characterization Of Two Novel Gene Regulatory Systems In The Zoonotic Bacterium Bartonella Henselae, Nhan Tu
Characterization Of Two Novel Gene Regulatory Systems In The Zoonotic Bacterium Bartonella Henselae, Nhan Tu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The genus Bartonella contains Gram-negative arthropod-borne bacteria that are found in many small animal reservoirs and are capable of causing human disease. Bacteria utilize a general stress response system to combat stresses from their surrounding environments. In α-proteobacteria, the general stress response system uses an alternate σ factor as the main regulator and incorporates it with a two-component system into a unique system. Our study identifies the general stress response system in the α-proteobacterium, Bartonella henselae, where the gene synteny is conserved and both the PhyR and alternate σ factor have similar sequence and domain structures with other α-proteobacteria. …

Mental Health Trainees' Perceptions Of Intimate Partner Violence Within Diverse Same-Sex Couples, Jessica Diane Nicholson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Intimate partner violence (IPV) in the United States is a widely prevalent issue that impacts men and women, individuals of diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds, and individuals in heterosexual and same-sex couples. The present investigation examined whether mental health trainees' perceptions of an IPV scenario varied based on how the race and sexual orientation of the couple was described. The 150 mental health graduate student participants were randomly assigned a vignette depicting an IPV situation where the partners were described as 2 African American males, 2 White males, 2 African American females, 2 White females. Participants were asked to rank their most …

Background
Constitutive and regulated internalization of cell surface proteins has been extensively investigated. The regulated internalization has been characterized as a principal mechanism for removing cell-surface receptors from the plasma membrane, and signaling to downstream targets of receptors. However, so far it is still not known whether the functional properties of remaining (non-internalized) receptor/channels may be regulated by internalization of the same class of receptor/channels. The N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) is a principal subtype of glutamate-gated ion channel and plays key roles in neuronal plasticity and memory functions. NMDARs are well-known to undergo two types of regulated internalization – homologous and …

Engaging Overqualified Employees: The Role Of Job And Nonwork Crafting, Soner Dumani
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The present study examined the relationship between perceived overqualification and work engagement through basic need satisfaction at work and further incorporated job crafting and nonwork crafting to understand the indirect role of need satisfaction. In study 1, a new measure for targeted nonwork crafting was developed and validated. The final scale provided adequate reliability and validity evidence, and predicted life satisfaction and job satisfaction above and beyond the measures of intrinsic motivation and recovery experiences. The main study included a total of 321 full-time employees who had been working in their current job for at least 3 months and represented …
The Efficacy Of Child Parent Relationship Therapy When Conducted In An Online Format On Levels Of Parental Acceptance, Brenna Michele Hicks
The Efficacy Of Child Parent Relationship Therapy When Conducted In An Online Format On Levels Of Parental Acceptance, Brenna Michele Hicks
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Children’s mental health is a topic of concern, not only in the escalating number of children who meet diagnostic criteria for disorders, but also for the practitioners desiring to treat them effectively. Parental involvement in treatment results in more favorable outcomes with longer treatment gains observed, thus reducing mental health issues.
An additional factor in children’s mental health is the effect of levels of parental acceptance toward the child. Parental acceptance is a positive outcome that has been observed in previous studies conducted with Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT).
There are many reported barriers to seeking treatment for mental health issues, …
Yeast Vacuolar Hops, Regulated By Its Kinase, Exploits Affinities For Acidic Lipids And Rab:Gtp For Membrane Binding And To Catalyze Tethering And Fusion, Amy Orr, William Wickner, Scott F. Rusin, Arminja N. Kettenbach, Michael Zick
Dartmouth Scholarship
Fusion of yeast vacuoles requires the Rab GTPase Ypt7p, four SNAREs (soluble N-ethylmaleimide–sensitive factor attachment protein receptors), the SNARE disassembly chaperones Sec17p/Sec18p, vacuolar lipids, and the Rab-effector complex HOPS (homotypic fusion and vacuole protein sorting). Two HOPS subunits have direct affinity for Ypt7p. Although vacuolar fusion has been reconstituted with purified components, the functional relationships between individual lipids and Ypt7p:GTP have remained unclear. We now report that acidic lipids function with Ypt7p as coreceptors for HOPS, supporting membrane tethering and fusion. After phosphorylation by the vacuolar kinase Yck3p, phospho-HOPS needs both Ypt7p:GTP and acidic lipids to support fusion.

Calibration And Optimization Of 3d Digital Breast Tomosynthesis Guided Near Infrared Spectral Tomography, Kelly E. Michaelsen, Venkataramanan Krishnaswamy, Linxi Shi, Srinivasan Vedantham, Steven Poplack, Andrew Karellas, Brian Pogue, Keith Paulsen
Dartmouth Scholarship
Calibration of a three-dimensional multimodal digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) x-ray and non-fiber based near infrared spectral tomography (NIRST) system is challenging but essential for clinical studies. Phantom imaging results yielded linear contrast recovery of total hemoglobin (HbT) concentration for cylindrical inclusions of 15 mm, 10 mm and 7 mm with a 3.5% decrease in the HbT estimate for each 1 cm increase in inclusion depth. A clinical exam of a patient's breast containing both benign and malignant lesions was successfully imaged, with greater HbT was found in the malignancy relative to the benign abnormality and fibroglandular regions (11 μM vs. …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Face-To-Face Orientations, Instructor Verbal Immediacy Behaviors, And Persistence In Online Courses, Donald Painter, Jr.
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The persistence rate in online classes remains significantly lower than in comparable face-to-face classes. There is a lack of research on strategies to help learners persist in online classes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between face-to-face orientations, instructor verbal immediacy behaviors, and persistence in online classes. It also explored the relationship between verbal immediacy and student satisfaction. Due to the disagreement in the literature, this study also investigated the relationship between student demographic variables, grade point average, and persistence.
This quantitative study combined both causal-comparative and correlational research methods. The study took place at a …

This paper ranges over a number of questions to do with the seemingly general sense of anxiety and discontent about life at this time, a time when we should be enjoying the embarrassment of riches heaped upon us in the West. Certainly, here in Ireland, we have experienced unprecedented wealth over the past ten years and yet you would be hard pressed to find a positive voice. Why is this? And how are we to turn this state of affairs around? My own work, over a thirty-year period, has engaged with the social, cultural and arts world and so these …

In a health care environment, mechanical ventilation is used to support patients during acute illness and surgery. Mechanical ventilation is the process by which the patient’s respiratory function is artificially supported using a respirator. During mechanical ventilation, it is necessary to ensure the adequacy of ventilation. The patient is thus monitored for several ventilatory parameters. The end-tidal CO2 (EtCO2) is one of the primary monitoring parameters. EtCO2 is the partial pressure or maximal concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) at the end of an exhaled breath, which is expressed as a percentage of CO2 or mmHg . Capnography is the technique …

Multiculturalism In Secondary Schools – A Linguistic, Socio-Political & Pedagogic Perspective, Maria Kenneally
The ITB Journal
As a modern foreign language lecturer I am fascinated by issues of language, culture and identity. To an extent my interest is compounded by the belief that we Irish are bilingual, English and Gaeilge, - a rich language with a strong oral tradition that has been an integral part of Irish identity. In September 1996 I began work as a secondary teacher in an inner city London school with a high proportion of multilingual and multicultural students. My observations and interactions with pupils at Plumstead Manor proved part of a journey of selfanalysis and self-discovery, and fortified my belief that …

The Use Of Manual Therapy And Strengthening Exercises To Improve Plantarflexion Strength And Mobility Following Achilles Tendon Repair: A Case Report, Jason Glikman
Case Report Posters
An Achilles tendon rupture is classified as ‘chronic’ or ‘neglected’ if it has been untreated for four or more weeks. PT management for all Achilles ruptures is to gain Plantarflexion (PF) strength, ankle ROM, and decrease scar tissue. Neglected ruptures increase scar tissue formation, causing delay in regaining functional strength and mobility. Decreased strength and mobility can lead to gait impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions. Literature is limited on best therapy for neglected Achilles tendon ruptures. The purpose of this case report was to add to the literature pertaining to neglected Achilles tendon ruptures and to report upon the …
Multimodal Physical Therapy Management Of A Patient With Unilateral Neglect Post-Stroke In An Outpatient Setting: A Case Report, Meghan Riley
Case Report Posters
A common behavioral syndrome of stroke is unilateral neglect (ULN) which is defined as the failure to report, respond, or orient to stimuli presented contralateral to the brain lesion. ULN has a negative influence on functional recovery and is associated with a poor functional outcome following a stroke, therefore several rehabilitative approaches have been proposed and implemented to decrease neglect and improve patient recovery. There are currently limitations within the research regarding the efficacy of PT interventions to decrease ULN symptoms. In addition, the optimal PT interventions and treatment strategies is unclear. The purpose of this case report is to …
