Phenolic Rich Extracts Obtained From Small Red Beans In Preventing Macrophage Mediated Chronic Inflammation, Nidhi Sharma Nov 2015

Phenolic Rich Extracts Obtained From Small Red Beans In Preventing Macrophage Mediated Chronic Inflammation, Nidhi Sharma

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Small red beans, commonly called Mexican beans, are a part of the legume family, the genus Phaseolus vulgaris, i.e., dry edible beans or the common bean. In addition to being a rich source of nutrients, small red beans also contain phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, and anthocyanins that have shown a plethora of health benefits against such conditions as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. In particular, the phenolic compounds common to the red beans have been reported to protect against chronic inflammation that if left unchecked can lead to various other chronic degenerative diseases. These …

Crisis Response Teams In The School Setting: Best Practices And Lessons Learned, Nancy Robinson Kelley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In recent years, more attention has been focused on crisis management in school settings, attributable in part to a heightening awareness of student mental health and violence in the schools. As such, there are different crisis response models designed for crisis workers to utilize in the event of a school crisis situation that address the needs of students, staff, and other stakeholders. The purpose of this action research study was to conduct an analysis of a local, suburban area District School Crisis Response Team's (DSCRT) model for crisis response in an attempt to produce a lessons learned, best practices approach …

Improved Sensitivity To Fluorescence For Cancer Detection In Wide-Field Image-Guided Neurosurgery, Michael Jermyn, Yoann Gosselin, Pablo A. Valdes, Mira Sibai, Kolbein Kolste Nov 2015

Improved Sensitivity To Fluorescence For Cancer Detection In Wide-Field Image-Guided Neurosurgery, Michael Jermyn, Yoann Gosselin, Pablo A. Valdes, Mira Sibai, Kolbein Kolste

Dartmouth Scholarship

In glioma surgery, Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) fluorescence may identify residual tumor that could be resected while minimizing damage to normal brain. We demonstrate that improved sensitivity for wide-field spectroscopic fluorescence imaging is achieved with minimal disruption to the neurosurgical workflow using an electron-multiplying charge-coupled device (EMCCD) relative to a state-of-the-art CMOS system. In phantom experiments the EMCCD system can detect at least two orders-of-magnitude lower PpIX. Ex vivo tissue imaging on a rat glioma model demonstrates improved fluorescence contrast compared with neurosurgical fluorescence microscope technology, and the fluorescence detection is confirmed with measurements from a clinically-validated spectroscopic probe. Greater PpIX …

The Extent And Nature Of Bullying In A Christian School, Brian Hazeltine, David A. Hernandez Nov 2015

The Extent And Nature Of Bullying In A Christian School, Brian Hazeltine, David A. Hernandez

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

Bullying is a problem that has been studied in schools worldwide, but there is little research on bullying within Christian schools, a dearth which may stem from the assumption that Christian schools teach character traits that are inimical to bullying. Yet understanding the extent and nature of bullying in Christian schools may lead to a better understanding of ways to address the problem in all schools. Guided by social identity theory, which allowed for a focus on moral and character development, this study examined the extent and nature of bullying among 347 students in Grades 3 through 10 in a …

Towards A Relationship-Centered Approach In Higher Education: The Dynamic Student Development Metatheodel (Dsdm), Mark Frederick, Pietro A. Sasso, William R. Barratt

New York Journal of Student Affairs

College success is often too simply measured as ultimate graduation and overlooks students' critical need for a perceived sense of affiliation and belonging to the collegiate community which develops self-identity as a college student and can result in a higher level of performance over the academic lifespan. This article presents the Dynamic Student Development Metatheodel (DSDM) which was developed from common factors identified in multiple theories and models of human development, student development, and learning. When intentionally employed, the DSDM can be expected to improve retention, persistence, and ultimate graduation, as well as improve students' academic and co-curricular experience.

Step Activity And Stride-To-Stride Fluctuations Are Negatively Correlated In Individuals With Transtibial Amputation, Jenny A. Kent, Nicholas Stergiou, Shane Wurdeman Nov 2015

Step Activity And Stride-To-Stride Fluctuations Are Negatively Correlated In Individuals With Transtibial Amputation, Jenny A. Kent, Nicholas Stergiou, Shane Wurdeman

Journal Articles

Background

Variability occurs naturally from stride to stride in healthy gait. It has been shown that individuals with lower limb loss have significantly increased stride-to-stride fluctuations during walking. This is considered indicative of movement disorganization and is associated with less healthy movement. Given that lower limb prosthesis users perform on average less physical activity than able bodied individuals, the purpose of this study was to determine whether increased fluctuations also correspond to a reduced level of activity in daily life.

Methods

Twenty-two transtibial amputees wore an activity monitor (Actigraph, Pensacola, FL, USA) for 3 weeks. Lower limb kinematics during treadmill …

Euthanasia: Is It Ethically And Morally Acceptable?, Hannah Carmichael

University Honors Program

All over the world, there is discussion being made about euthanasia and if it is ethically and morally acceptable. The opinions are different from state to state and country to country. These differences in opinions evolve from different religions, political forces, generations, genders, and social classes. Through literature review, an overview of euthanasia, along with the ethical dilemmas, the laws regarding euthanasia, and the financial outcomes of euthanasia will be presented. Findings suggest that there may never be a definitive answer to the ethics of euthanasia, but more discussion and research can lead to a more understanding of the positive …
