Effects Of Processing And Medical Sterilization Techniques On 3d-Printed And Molded Polylactic Acid, Mariah Nicole Geritano
Effects Of Processing And Medical Sterilization Techniques On 3d-Printed And Molded Polylactic Acid, Mariah Nicole Geritano
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Manufacturing industries have evolved tremendously in the past decade with the introduction of Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D Printing. The medical device industry has been a leader in adapting this new technology into research and development. 3D printing enables medical devices and implants to become more customizable, patient specific, and allows for low production numbers. This study compares the mechanical and thermal properties of traditionally manufactured parts versus parts manufactured through 3D printing before and after sterilization, and the ability of an FDM printer to produce reliable, identical samples. It was found that molded samples and 100% infill …
Breath Biomarkers Detection By Chemical Sensors, Yan Li
Breath Biomarkers Detection By Chemical Sensors, Yan Li
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Our breath is a very complex mixture of chemical compositions. Usually, the majority of our exhaled breath consists of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxides, water and inert gases. The remaining small fraction of breath contains thousands of components in trace amount, including inorganic gas molecules like nitric monoxide and diverse kinds of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The concentrations of our exhaled gases are at a relatively stable level, though minor fluctuations may occur at different time of the day and they are also linked to the body status. Sometimes, if a specific breath gas of some appears to have an abnormal …
Development Of New Generation Of Ceramics For Environmentally Focused Chemical Separations, Girish Ramakrishnan
Development Of New Generation Of Ceramics For Environmentally Focused Chemical Separations, Girish Ramakrishnan
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation focuses on the use of composite materials for environmental applications. For the first time, applications of both fresh and aged concrete as inexpensive adsorbents for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) removal is demonstrated. Concrete is the most widely used composite material of the modern era. Cement manufacturing (a major component of concrete) is considered to be one of the leading contributors to air pollution, resulting in 7% of the global carbon dioxide emissions along with a number of other harmful pollutants such as oxides, mercury and particulates. These emissions aide in the formation of acid rain, smog, and toxic ground …
Class Iii Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase Vps34 In Autophagy, Endocytosis, And Nutrient-Induced Signaling, Nadia Jaber
Class Iii Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase Vps34 In Autophagy, Endocytosis, And Nutrient-Induced Signaling, Nadia Jaber
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Vps34 is the sole member of the Class III phosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI3Ks) identified in mammals thus far. It phosphorylates phosphatidylinositol (PI) to generate PI(3)P on intracellular membranes. Previous work has suggested that Vps34 is important for the protein degradation pathways of autophagy and endocytosis, as well as nutrient-induced mTOR signaling. However, due to the pluripotent nature of available PI3K inhibitors, a clear understanding of the functions of mammalian Vps34 remains to be illustrated. To investigate the precise role of Vps34 in these processes, I have generated and characterized mice with conditional genetic ablation of Vps34. Mice with liver or heart-specific …

Three-Dimensional Macroporous All-Carbon Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering Applications, Gaurav Lalwani
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Assembly of carbon nanomaterials into three-dimensional (3D) architectures is necessary to harness their unique physiochemical properties for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. In this dissertation, fabrication and characterization of 3D chemically crosslinked macro-sized (5-8 mm height and 4-6 mm diameter) porous carbon nanotube (CNT) scaffolds, their in vitro cytocompatibility and interactions with human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) are reported. Single- or multi-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs or MWCNTs) scaffolds were fabricated using a novel radical initiated thermal crosslinking and annealing method using SWCNTs or MWCNTs as nanoscale building blocks. The scaffolds possess macroscale interconnected pores, robust structural integrity, stability, and …
Comparison Of Sustained Cognitive Training Vs. Cardiovascular Exercise On Cognitive Decline And Pathology In A Vascular Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease | Comparison Of Sustained Cognitive Training Vs. Cardiovascular Exercise On Cognitive Decline And Pathology In A Vascular Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Maria Elizabeth Anderson
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Despite numerous advances in our understanding of the mechanisms that underlie Alzheimer’s disease (AD), there is still no cure, and the disease continues to pose a severe public health problem. It has become clear that many factors, including certain lifestyle practices, may contribute to the development of the disease; however, much remains to be learned about how lifestyle factors may prevent or delay cognitive decline. Unlike human epidemiological studies, murine models can provide clearer inferences about causality. The present studies focus on two lifestyle factors: cognitive enrichment and cardio-vascular exercise. Specifically, the effects of lifestyle interventions on behavioral performance and …
Modified Low-Density Lipoprotein From Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Induces Foamy Macrophage Formation, Guannan Chen
Modified Low-Density Lipoprotein From Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Induces Foamy Macrophage Formation, Guannan Chen
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the major causes of mortality in the world, causing approximately 1.5 million deaths every year, among which children take a great part. However, due to the perception that children are rarely infectious or they rarely develop severe disease, children with TB have always been neglected. What is worse, diagnosis of childhood TB is difficult, making it harder to control the disease. Foamy macrophages are a key component in the pathology of TB, and the formation of foamy macrophages foresees the progression of infection to active disease. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is one of the major lipoproteins …

Synthesis Of Carbon-11 Labeled Organic Molecules For Pet Studies, So Jeong Lee
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
PET has played a key role in the field of molecular imaging and nuclear medicine over the past decades. PET represents a non-invasive molecular imaging technique to study and visualize human physiology by detecting positron-emitting radiopharmaceuticals labeled with short half-live radioisotopes (i.e. | 11C, 13N, 15O, and 18F) that visualize in vivo biochemical processes and metabolic pathways (i.e. | glycolysis and protein/DNA synthesis). PET is also an emerging method for measuring body function and tailoring disease treatment in living human by detecting biochemical changes preceding anatomical changes occurring a disease. The capability of imaging quantitatively and with high sensitivity without …
The Impact Of Weight-Related Abuse On Self-Perception And Disordered Eating: A Model Of Obesity, Jessica Keefe Salwen
The Impact Of Weight-Related Abuse On Self-Perception And Disordered Eating: A Model Of Obesity, Jessica Keefe Salwen
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Obesity affects approximately one-third of the adult population in the U.S. and is one of the primary reasons for bullying in school. While weight-related abuse (WRA) is a specific risk factor for disordered eating (binge eating, emotional eating, night eating, and unhealthy weight control) and negative self-perception, and disordered eating and negative self-perception are predictive of obesity, these relationships have not been addressed with a comprehensive model. Thus, the current study evaluated a structural equation model in which severity of WRA predicted the emotional impact of WRA and negative self-perception, which predicted disordered eating, which in turn predicted current body …

The Internet of Things (IoT) has been developing for decades and has been considered as the future of the Internet. The basic idea of the IoT is to enable a wide range of objects (things) around us to interact and cooperate with each other so that certain goals are reached. An important technology that will be part of the IoT is Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID). RFID is based on the concept of backscatter-based communication and the use of inexpensive RFID tags. A very exciting direction of work in the last few years has been the research on backscatter-based tag-to-tag (BBTT) …

In Defense Of Magic: Using Fantasy Literature In The Classroom, Marisa Florence Cignarella
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This thesis argues for the greater inclusion of fantasy literature in high school and middle school English classrooms. Through an analysis of the popularity of fantasy series, including recent movies and their widespread pop cultural appeal, this thesis illustrates that fantasy resonates with many readers. A close examination of various works of fantasy literature appropriate to be read in full or excerpted in the classroom demonstrates that fantasy usefully illustrates various literary concepts, such as symbolism, metaphor, allusion, allegory, and character foils; provides clear examples of the hero's journey, which appear in various canonical texts as well as other media; …
Statistical Methods For Optimizing Task Performance In Nuclear Medicine Imaging And In X-Ray Breast Imaging, Lin Chen
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In many medical imaging systems used in radiology, the hardware delivers raw data to a sensor and a computer is used to convert the sensor data to a viewable image by implementing tomographic reconstruction algorithms. The radiologist views the image and performs a task, such as detecting a lesion. Engineers and applied mathematicians seek to improve medical imaging systems by making hardware changes and changes in the reconstruction algorithm. Improvement in this thesis is measured by scalar figures of merit, FOM, for task performance. We consider two modalities: SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) and Contrast-Enhanced DBT (Digital Breast Tomosynthesis). …
Address To The Letter: Frankenstein, Pamela, And The Epistolary Novel, Peter Walsh
Address To The Letter: Frankenstein, Pamela, And The Epistolary Novel, Peter Walsh
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, is rarely classified as an epistolary novel. Many readers actually forget that the novel begins as a series of letters between an arctic explorer and his sister. The framing device of the letter used by Shelley cites the revered history of the epistolary novel in the previous century, most notably those of Samuel Richardson. Richardson used the epistolary form in his novels to create what Ian Watt refers to as “formal realism†. Richardson presents his novels as truth objects by employing the epistolary frame, but Shelley uses the form to reject the …
Heroes In Patrick Mchale's Over The Garden Wall, Justine Nicole Wilson
Heroes In Patrick Mchale's Over The Garden Wall, Justine Nicole Wilson
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The presented Thesis asserts Patrick McHale’s Over the Garden Wall as a Modern Epic. It identifies the piece as Dantesque in its structure of a journey through an underworld, while noting that Dante is not the hero of his own epic. The argument is made that while Dante is too inactive in determining his fate to be given the title of epic Hero, McHale’s protagonists Wirt and Greg follow the structure of epic heroes, of the ancient tradition. The purpose of two protagonist on the same personal journey that is a spiritual odyssey, is maintained as a catalyst that allows …
Amicitia Among Women: Fellowship & Pious Practice In The Vitae Of Italian Saints, Andrea Rebecca Boffa
Amicitia Among Women: Fellowship & Pious Practice In The Vitae Of Italian Saints, Andrea Rebecca Boffa
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Very broadly, friendship can be defined as a particular relationship between individuals that is reciprocal in nature. On the one hand, it is a relationship that is universal, but on the other hand friendship is a concept that is socially constructed and historicized through the meanings and functions a particular society gives to it and the ways in which the relationship is realized and performed. Furthermore, friendship is as much an idea as it is a lived experience. This dissertation examines friendship among women in medieval Italian cities of the thirteenth– and fourteenth– centuries. The primary focus of this study …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation addresses community belonging, community building, and community identity of women in the city of Granada during the early modern period, showing how women made use of their Granadan social context. It situates the women of Granada in the context of the economic and social turmoil throughout the early modern period, and in particular of the seventeenth century. Non-elite urban women in early modern Granada actively shaped the civic economy, culture, and religious life of the city and, in turn, their lives were shaped by the interplay of these elements. Women played indispensable commercial roles in the market economy, …
The Role And Regulation Of Sphingosine Kinases In Cancer Biology, Mohamad Adada
The Role And Regulation Of Sphingosine Kinases In Cancer Biology, Mohamad Adada
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Sphingolipids have emerged as bioactive constituents of eukaryotic cells. The bioactive sphingolipid ceramide mediates cellular senescence, apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. Acted upon by ceramidase, it is transformed to sphingosine that in turn gets phosphorylated by sphingosine kinases (SK1 and SK2) to generate sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P). This lipid, on the contrary, mediates cellular proliferation, mitogenesis, inflammation, angiogenesis, and cancer metastasis through its actions on specific G-protein coupled receptors (S1PR1-5). ERM (ezrin, radixin, and moesin) proteins are a group of adaptor molecules linking the cortical actin cytoskeleton to the plasma membrane, and are emerging as critical regulators of cancer metastasis and progression …
Study Of Stat3 Protein Interactions Using An In Vitro Binding Assay, Julie Armstrong
Study Of Stat3 Protein Interactions Using An In Vitro Binding Assay, Julie Armstrong
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Transcription factors function as regulators of gene expression by controlling the activation of target genes. As a member of the STAT (Signal Transducer and Activators of Transcription) family, STAT3 regulates gene expression responsible for controlling differentiation, cell survival, proliferation, migration, and apoptosis. Activation of STAT3 conventionally occurs through tyrosine phosphorylation by JAK kinases stimulated following cytokine binding receptors. Cytokines like IL-6 bind to cell surface receptors, leading to the activation of associated JAK kinases. JAKs phosphorylate the cytoplasmic domains of the receptors, and STAT3 is recruited through its SH2 domain resulting in its phosphorylation by JAKs. It has been determined …
Keratin 17: A Prognostic Marker And Nuclear Oncoprotein In Cancer, Luisa Fernanda Escobar Hoyos
Keratin 17: A Prognostic Marker And Nuclear Oncoprotein In Cancer, Luisa Fernanda Escobar Hoyos
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Cancer is a fundamentally heterogeneous at virtually every level, ranging from the anatomic site of origin to the histologic type, degree of differentiation, and the underlying pathogenetic mechanisms. Despite dramatic progress in our ability to define cellular and molecular heterogeneity, there has been limited progress in the identification of the cellular mechanisms that define the tumor biology, treatment response, and patient outcome. Prognostic markers have the potential to not only identify patients at greatest risk for disease progression and death, but may also be the underlying drivers that mediate tumor aggression. In turn, these markers could also represent therapeutic targets. …
Inhibition Of Chaperone/Usher Pilus Assembly By Nitazoxanide, Peter Nicholas Chahales
Inhibition Of Chaperone/Usher Pilus Assembly By Nitazoxanide, Peter Nicholas Chahales
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Increasing rates of antibiotic resistance are challenging the status quo and raising the possibility of a post-antibiotic era, in which even common infections could become life threatening. This looming health crisis highlights the immediate need for new and effective therapies, which not only neutralize bacterial pathogens but also limit the development of resistance. A new class of molecules known as anti-virulence therapeutics targets the bacterial virulence factors used to establish disease in the host. This is in contrast to traditional antibiotics, which disrupt essential processes required for bacterial survival. One such virulence target includes adhesive fibers, termed pili, assembled by …
An In Vivo Assessment Of The Effects Of Using Different Implant Abutment Occluding Materials On Implant Microleakage And The Peri-Implant Microbiome, Caroline Rubino
An In Vivo Assessment Of The Effects Of Using Different Implant Abutment Occluding Materials On Implant Microleakage And The Peri-Implant Microbiome, Caroline Rubino
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Microleakage may be a factor in the progression of peri-implant pathology. Microleakage in implant dentistry refers to the passage of bacteria, fluids, molecules or ions between the abutment-implant interface to and from the surrounding periodontal tissues. This creates a zone of inflammation and reservoir of bacteria at the implant-abutment interface. Bone loss typically occurs within the first year of abutment connection and then stabilizes. It has not yet been definitively proven that the occurrence of microleakage cannot contribute to future bone loss or impede the treatment of peri-implant disease. Therefore, strategies to reduce or eliminate microleakage are sought out. Recent …
Ideological Extremity Perception: Causes And Consequences, Karyn Ann Amira
Ideological Extremity Perception: Causes And Consequences, Karyn Ann Amira
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation examines causes and consequences of ideological perception and theorizes that these judgments are fueled by both conscious and subconscious affect, as proposed by the hot cognition model and the motivated reasoning framework. The first empirical chapter, which stands separate from the others, uses fixed effects NES panel data to demonstrate that ideological perceptions of the party in power impact citizen preferences for federal spending. The second empirical chapter uses an experimental survey to demonstrate that conscious and subconscious affect impact ideological perceptions of fictitious candidates while simultaneously testing a previous finding that Democrats are perceived as more ideological …
Fractional Time Series Applications In Political Science, Taylor Grant
Fractional Time Series Applications In Political Science, Taylor Grant
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation is focused on the estimation of time series models with the main area of interest being the use of fractional methods in political science. Since the work of Granger (1980), Granger and Joyeux (1980) and Hosking (1981) initially introduced the concept of fractional integration the area of study has continued to grow in economics. In political science however, research into fractional integration has failed to advance beyond an initial flurry of study that began in the late 1990s and early 2000s. This dissertation contains three stand alone chapters that are focused on the use of fractional methods with …
Understanding Social Mobility, Economic Environment, And Their Effects On Social Policy Attitudes, Patrick Lown
Understanding Social Mobility, Economic Environment, And Their Effects On Social Policy Attitudes, Patrick Lown
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Economic opportunity has long been a topic of interest among students of society and politics, and has made its way back to the forefront of inquiry with the resurgence of levels of inequality beyond those observed during the Gilded Age in the 1920s. Recent studies conducted by The Pew Charitable Trust Mobility Project, as well as others, have revealed that despite Americans’ beliefs in a land of opportunity, the chances to get ahead in life have dwindled for many. However, there is a dearth of information about what members of the public think about their own economic mobility and the …
The Resurrection Of Self: How Deconversion From Religious Belief To Atheism Healed A History Of Rejection, Trauma, And Shame, Amy Phillips
The Resurrection Of Self: How Deconversion From Religious Belief To Atheism Healed A History Of Rejection, Trauma, And Shame, Amy Phillips
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
There are two experiences that atheists have which are not yet well understood: discrimination and deconversion. Through semi-structured interviews, designed to better understand the deconversion process and the relationships of 35 American atheists living in both the Northeast and Southern regions of the United States, a better understanding of these experiences emerged. These individuals had damaging histories, which included abuse, abandonment and/or outsider status. These elements combined with religious teachings yielded a sense of self-as-bad in which respondents experienced feelings of shame, depression, anxiety, and in some cases suicidality. The 25 males, 9 females and 1 transwoman in this study …
Lost And Found: Transgender Elders’ Journey Toward Authenticity. A Constructionist Grounded Theory Study | Lost And Found: Transgender Elders’ Journey Toward Authenticity. A Constructionist Grounded Theory Study, Donna Barbara Riley
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
While theoretical models of transgender identity development exist, theoretical models of post-transition social identity development are limited, and theoretical models of transgender individuals transitioning in later life are absent. As such, the purpose of this study is to explore the experience of transgender individuals coming out later in life, often after decades of hiding. Their experiences give voice to the trans community to define self-fulfillment as a transgender person post-transition. Additionally, this study explores the obstacles transgender elders navigate in middle and later life. Using a semi-structured interview guide with 42 transgender elders 55 years and older, respondents constructed chronological …
The Global Determinants Of Health: A Cross-National Study Of Child Mortality In Less-Developed Countries, 1985-2005, Eric Shircliff
The Global Determinants Of Health: A Cross-National Study Of Child Mortality In Less-Developed Countries, 1985-2005, Eric Shircliff
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Rates of child mortality vary greatly across the globe. The lowest rates are found in developed countries, with the lowest located in Iceland at 3 deaths per 1,000 live births. The highest rates exist in less-developed countries, the highest of which located in Niger at 305 deaths per 1,000 live births. Since 1990, the global rate of child mortality has been declining. However, for many less-developed countries this progress is either slow or stopped. Furthermore, the total number of child deaths in less-developed countries overwhelms that of developed nations, accounting for approximately 99% of global child mortality. The purpose of …

Synthetic Gene Design: Optimization And Analysis, Rukhsana Yeasmin
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
With the advance of synthetic biology has come increased interest in designing synthetic genes which optimize protein expression. We propose new algorithms for gene design under several different constraints. Our optimization criteria include finding minimum energy and maximum energy RNA structures for a given gene sequence, optimizing the amount of tRNA auto-correlation in genes and designing maximum and minimum auto-correlated sequences. We also develop methods to analyze and interpret tiled microarray genome expression data. Statistical analysis of the viral genome expression data enables us to discover unknown facts about its life cycle, its impact on the host cell shutoff mechanism. …
