Understanding Emotion In Relation To Drinking Motivation, Melissa C. Hinely Dec 2015

Understanding Emotion In Relation To Drinking Motivation, Melissa C. Hinely

Honors College Theses

Recent research has uncovered the interactions between implicit alcohol motivations and drinking behaviors after emotion inductions (Ostafin & Brooks, 2011). However, little research has supplemented such findings. This longitudinal two-part study examined the impact of a personalized emotion induction on implicit alcohol-related associations in a college sample enrolled at southern university. 215 participants were randomly assigned to one of three emotion-induction conditions (negative, neutral, or positive). During phase I, participants completed a baseline Implicit Association Tests (IAT; Greenwald et al., 1998) to assess implicit alcohol-related cognitions related to valence and motivation. Based on condition, participants were also asked to describe …

Making Sense Of The Distrust Of The Chinese Government In Light Of China’S Successes In Economic Modernization, Rachel L. Neuhauser Dec 2015

Making Sense Of The Distrust Of The Chinese Government In Light Of China’S Successes In Economic Modernization, Rachel L. Neuhauser

Honors College Theses

This paper explores the contrast of China’s spectacular economic development and the low scores of trust for the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) legitimacy among the Chinese people. The sharp contrast may reflect flaws in the shaping of de facto authority of the Chinese government. The de facto authority is examined in connection to the notion of the Mandate of Heaven from the Confucian tradition. The severe imbalance of economic growth and lack of political reform is discussed against the backgrounds of the domestic and international political circumstances. This paper argues that, in spite of the phenomenal economic development of the …

Central Retinal Artery Occlusion Following Laser Treatment For Ocular Ischemic Aortic Arch Syndrome., Payal J Shah, Brian Ellis, Lauren R Digiovine, Jeffery P Hogg, Monique J Leys

Heart and Vascular Articles

Objective: Ocular ischemic syndrome is a rare blinding condition generally caused by disease of the carotid artery. We describe a 69-year-old female with a 50 pack-year smoking history with aortic arch syndrome causing bilateral ocular ischemic syndrome.

Methods: The patient presented with progressive visual loss and temple pain. Slit lamp biomicroscopy revealed bilateral iris neovascularization. This finding prompted a cardiovascular work up. Panretinal photocoagulation with retrobulbar block was performed in the right eye.

Results: A temporal artery biopsy was negative. The carotid duplex ultrasound showed only a 1-39% stenosis. MRA revealed a more proximal occlusion of the aortic branch for …

Cerebellar Dopaminergic Signaling In The Dorsomedial Striatum Of Fragile-X Mice: Significance To Autism Spectrum Disorders, Zade Ramses Holloway Dec 2015

Cerebellar Dopaminergic Signaling In The Dorsomedial Striatum Of Fragile-X Mice: Significance To Autism Spectrum Disorders, Zade Ramses Holloway

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by motor impairments and deficits in social communication potentially stemming from cerebellar Purkinje cell loss and dysfunction. Recent mapping of glutamatergic and dopaminergic pathways has provided evidence that degeneration of Purkinje cells coincides with attenuated dopamine (DA) release in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) via the cerebello-thalamo-PFCpathway. As patients with ASD exhibit repetitive behavior, abnormal reward processing, and lack of planning ability, it appears the effects of neuropathology in the cerebellum extend to the nigrostriatal pathway. Using fixed-potential amperometry and electrical stimulation of cerebellar nuclei, we investigated the possibility that the cerebellum modulates DA …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

ProblemImmune changes occur during pregnancy, including a bias towards Th2 responses. This study explored maternal DNA methylation (DNA-M) of Th1, Th2, Th17, and Treg pathway genes before and during pregnancy.MethodsBlood DNA-M was measured in 54 women at age 18, and again in the first (weeks 8-21, n=39) and second (weeks 22-38, n=35) halves of pregnancy. Cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) sites in genes of the T cell pathways were compared to random samples of CpGs, contrasting non-pregnancy with first and second halves of gestation using mixed linear models.ResultsMore CpGs within the Th2 pathway (35%) changed significantly compared to randomly selected CpGs (24%) in …

Profiles Of Identity And Comorbid Obesity-Hypertension: Investigating The Relation Amongst Adult African Americans, Courtney Maclin Dec 2015

Profiles Of Identity And Comorbid Obesity-Hypertension: Investigating The Relation Amongst Adult African Americans, Courtney Maclin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

African Americans are at an increased risk of comorbid obesity-hypertension. This study examined the disparity through the lens of identity based-motivation theory. A latent profile analysis was conducted, to explicate the within group diversity of African American identity endorsement, distinguishing two classes based of racial group closeness; high closeness and moderate closeness. The findings suggest that identity, particularly moderate closeness, was significantly predictive of comorbid obesity-hypertension, both directly as well as indirectly through activity engagement. Socioeconomic status, however did not moderate the relation. We conclude that investigations of identity are particularly relevant to conceptualizing predictors of comorbid obesity-hypertension for African …

Predicting Employees' Work Exhaustion, Job Satisfaction, And Turnover Intention: The Role Of Informated Job Resources And Personal Resources, Jignya M. Patel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Turnover intention of information technology (IT) professionals and IT users has been a topic of interest to both academics and industry in recent years; job demands such as excessive workload, work exhaustion, relentless deadlines, role conflict and role ambiguity have all been found to affect turnover intention of IT professionals and IT users. Yet, researchers have paid little attention to the influence of job resources and personal resources. The purpose of this research, presented in the form of two essays, is to explore the effect of those influences on turnover intention of IT professionals and IT users.Using job demand-resource theory, …

Background

Located in the Pacific Ocean between Australia and New Zealand, the unique population isolate of Norfolk Island has been shown to exhibit increased prevalence of metabolic disorders (type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease) compared to mainland Australia. We investigated this well-established genetic isolate, utilising its unique genomic structure to increase the ability to detect related genetic markers. A pedigree-based genome-wide association study of 16 routinely collected blood-based clinical traits in 382 Norfolk Island individuals was performed.

Results

A striking association peak was located at chromosome 2q37.1 for both total bilirubin and direct bilirubin, with 29 SNPs reaching statistical significance (P …

Cyber-Bullying Portrayals In The News Media, Mary L. Alexander Dec 2015

Cyber-Bullying Portrayals In The News Media, Mary L. Alexander

Celebration of Scholarship Poster Session

Cyber-bullying is a phenomenon that is widely studied. Researches have examined the characteristics of perpetrators and victims, impacts of cyber-bullying on both the victims and offenders, the development and application of law and the development of programs to stem cyber-bullying. Despite a great amount of research dedicated to these aforementioned areas, studies examining the portrayal of cyber-bullying by news media outlets are rare. An understanding of this portrayal is important as the news media is a significant source of public opinions about a vast array of topics in society. As such, the goal of the present research is to provide …

Smartphone-Based Intervention To Support Cal Poly Ethnic Minority Students And Psychophysiological Validation Project, Carol Wang, Lindsay Szabo, Luis Cuellar Dec 2015

Smartphone-Based Intervention To Support Cal Poly Ethnic Minority Students And Psychophysiological Validation Project, Carol Wang, Lindsay Szabo, Luis Cuellar

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

This project is an interdisciplinary effort between Psychology and Computer Science. Experiencing racial/ethnic discrimination is a key stressor placing Asian- and Latino-heritage college students at risk for poor mental and physical health. Two major gaps in the literature are a lack of understanding regarding: 1) how discrimination is linked to poor health outcomes (i.e., we must move beyond studies showing a correlational link between discrimination and poor health), and 2) what are protective factors that can attenuate these links? To address these two major limitations, this research project is significant in two ways. First, in the proposed psychophysiology study, we …

Medical Tourism: An Emerging Terrain, Anthony Agbeh, Elaine T. Jurkowski Dec 2015

Medical Tourism: An Emerging Terrain, Anthony Agbeh, Elaine T. Jurkowski

Peer-reviewed Articles

Medical Tourism within the United States has become a growing industry, generally associated with people from second and third world areas coming to the United States for medical treatments. However, this trend is reversing, and there currently is a growing trend for North Americans to travel to areas associated with the developing world (Thailand, India, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea and Turkey) for medical treatments, and couple this with a restful scenario for family or loved ones to offer social support to the one convalescing. This paper presentation will address the upcoming trend toward medical tourism as a captive …
