Systematic Literature Search For Mscr Thesis: Intrathecal Pain Pumps For The Treatment Of Neuropathic Pain, Kathleen L. Reyes, Karen R. Mcelfresh, Jonathan D. Eldredge

Clinical and Translational Science Center Scholarly Output

This search strategy sought to construct an evidence-based position on the use of intrathecal pumps. We identified literature pertaining to the safety and efficacy of intrathecal pumps for the treatment of neuropathic pain. Articles obtained using this search strategy provided the background information for our thesis manuscript, which sought to determine if delivering opioids via the secure, non-tamperable intrathecal pain pump, in combination with other synergistic medications, would show improved pain scores and reduced side effects in patients with chronic neuropathic pain.

School Shootings And Moral Panics: Differences In Media Framing Based On Race, Class, And Socioeconomic Status, Kelly Ann Lavoie Dec 2015

School Shootings And Moral Panics: Differences In Media Framing Based On Race, Class, And Socioeconomic Status, Kelly Ann Lavoie

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Media coverage of school shooting incidents are constructed using various frames that differ depending on the race, class, and socioeconomic status of the victims, perpetrators, and their communities. Moral panics have arisen as a result of these frames, having been constructed to instigate fear and affect policy in ways that can have negative effects on both students in general and, in particular, minority students in urban schools. In this study, I analyzed the framing language used in news content, the demographic information of the schools in which shootings occurred, and the amount of coverage afforded to the incidents. This content …

The Effects And Comparisons Of Receptive Live Music Listening And Expressive Music Making On Mood With Elderly Adults In A Congregate Residential Setting, Rory Kendall Bolton Dec 2015

The Effects And Comparisons Of Receptive Live Music Listening And Expressive Music Making On Mood With Elderly Adults In A Congregate Residential Setting, Rory Kendall Bolton

Theses and Dissertations

It is important to consider mood and its effect on elderly persons as many older adults will experience symptoms of depression. In prior studies, research indicated that preferred music listening and expressive music making can positively change mood in older adults. The purpose of this research study was to investigate the differences between receptive music listening and expressive music making (presented as a facilitated group music therapy session) and their effect on participants’ mood. The researcher hypothesized that 1) there would be a significant difference for pre and posttest standardized mood assessment (PANAS) scores between the receptive music listening and …

The Challenges Of Leading Change In Health-Care Delivery From The Frontline, Vivienne Byers Dec 2015

The Challenges Of Leading Change In Health-Care Delivery From The Frontline, Vivienne Byers

Articles

Aim: The public sector is facing turbulent times and this challenges nurses, who are expected to serve both patient interests and the efficiency drives of their organisations. In the context of implementing person-centred health policy, this paper explores the evolving role of front-line nurses as leaders and champions of change.

Background: Nurses can be seen to have some autonomy in health-care delivery. However, they are subject to systems of social control. In implementing person- centred policy, nurses can be seen to be doing the best they can within a constrained environment.

Method: A survey of nursing practice in person-centred health-policy …

Perceptions Of Thermal Comfort: Landscape Design Attributes Based On The Shops At La Cantera In San Antonio, Texas, Krishan Patel

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

The focus of this thesis was to understand people’s perceptions of thermal comfort. Understanding design attributes that affect thermal comfort in outdoor spaces is necessary, as it will have a major influence on the design of urban outdoor spaces (Nikolopoulou and Steemers, 2003). The research will have great implications on the field of landscape architecture, architecture, urban design, and planning, Indoor malls are no longer being built. The trend is moving towards lifestyle centers. Lifestyle centers offer an experience that can’t be replicated by indoor malls. Lifestyle centers are open to the sky and as a result, they are exposed …

From Warfare To Welfare: Veterans, Military Charities And The Blurred Spatiality Of Post-Service Welfare In The United Kingdom, Agatha Herman, Richard Yarwood Dec 2015

From Warfare To Welfare: Veterans, Military Charities And The Blurred Spatiality Of Post-Service Welfare In The United Kingdom, Agatha Herman, Richard Yarwood

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The military offers a form of welfare-for-work but when personnel leave they lose this safety net, a loss exacerbated by the rollback neoliberalism of the contemporary welfare state. Increasingly the third sector has stepped in to address veterans’ welfare needs through operating within and across military/civilian and state/market/community spaces and cultures. In this paper we use both veterans’ and military charities’ experiences to analyse the complex politics that govern the liminal boundary zone of post-military welfare. Through exploring ‘crossing’ and ‘bridging’ we conceptualise military charities as ‘boundary subjects’, active yet dependent on the continuation of the civilian-military binary, and argue …

Thinking About Work At Home: Implications For Safety At Work, Frankie Guros Dec 2015

Thinking About Work At Home: Implications For Safety At Work, Frankie Guros

Dissertations and Theses

Safety at work is of the utmost importance to employees and the organizations they work for, and as such, it is a central issue for occupational health psychology. Although dramatic decreases in the number of worker injuries and fatalities have been observed over the last several decades, safety remains a principal concern for organizations. This is especially true in occupations in which employees face serious threats to their personal safety, such as correctional officers (COs). While a number of studies have identified workplace factors that contribute to worker safety, few have attempted to draw a link between employee nonwork experiences …

Opinions On The Affordable Care Act: The Role Of Self-Interest, Bradley J. West Dec 2015

Opinions On The Affordable Care Act: The Role Of Self-Interest, Bradley J. West

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Since its passage in 2010, the Affordable Care Act has received some of the most public backlash than any other bill in recent history. The bill aims to expand healthcare to those who were previously ineligible for coverage due to a pre-existing condition and to those who cannot afford it by subsidising their purchase of private health care plans. One would expect unhealthy, uninsured, and poor Americans to support this. However, there are plenty of uninsured, unhealthy, poor Americans who have a negative opinion of the ACA. This paper attempts to reconcile this fact with a popular theory of voting …

Effects Of Persuasive Communication On Intention To Save Energy: Punishing And Rewarding Messages, Michell Patricia Garcia Mera Dec 2015

Effects Of Persuasive Communication On Intention To Save Energy: Punishing And Rewarding Messages, Michell Patricia Garcia Mera

Theses

Communication can be used to persuade individuals to change their intentions. This study analyzes the use of rewarding and punishing messages for the purpose of changing intention towards energy saving. It also analyzes the use of social and individual rewards and punishments and their effects in motivating behavioral change positively towards energy saving. Results show that while reward and punishment are both effective in manipulating intention positively towards energy saving behaviors, overall there is no significant difference between the two. However, when individual reward was compared to individual punishment, individual punishment was found to be more effective than reward in …

Background: Global literature indicates the burden of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), syphilis and hepatitis C virus (HCV) has disproportionately affected cross-border migrant female sex workers (FSW). However, few studies reported the HIV risk among Vietnamese FSW at borderline areas in China. We examined five consecutive years of HIV, syphilis, and HCV prevalence and corresponding risk factors among this group in Guangxi Province of China in the current study. Method: Demographic and behavioral data as well as test results of blood samples for HIV/syphilis/HCV testing were collected from the annual National Sentinel Surveillance (NSS) from the year of 2010 to 2014. …

Igf-I Induces Upregulation Of Ddr1 Collagen Receptor In Breast Cancer Cells By Suppressing Mir-199a-5p Through The Pi3k/Akt Pathway., Roberta Matà, Chiara Palladino, Maria Luisa Nicolosi, Anna Rita Lo Presti, Roberta Malaguarnera, Marco Ragusa, Daniela Sciortino, Andrea Morrione, Marcello Maggiolini, Veronica Vella, Antonino Belfiore

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

Discoidin Domain Receptor 1 (DDR1) is a collagen receptor tyrosine-kinase that contributes to epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition and enhances cancer progression. Our previous data indicate that, in breast cancer cells, DDR1 interacts with IGF-1R and positively modulates IGF-1R expression and biological responses, suggesting that the DDR1-IGF-IR cross-talk may play an important role in cancer. In this study, we set out to evaluate whether IGF-I stimulation may affect DDR1 expression. Indeed, in breast cancer cells (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) IGF-I induced significant increase of DDR1 protein expression, in a time and dose dependent manner. However, we did not observe parallel changes in DDR1 mRNA. DDR1 …
