Geography: A Career Without Borders

DePaul Magazine

What do mosquito abatement, education policy, retail site location and public transportation have in common? Although it might not seem obvious, these disparate pursuits all involve the work of geographers. This article looks at the wide variety of occupations open to geographers, who manipulate and map big data, use geographic information systems for municipal functions and pest removal, analyze transportation and job siting, pursue human and environmental sustainability practices, and teach. The article also includes a brief summary of the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers.

Rural And Remote Access To Justice, A Literature Review, Nicole Aylwin, Lisa Moore Nov 2015

Rural And Remote Access To Justice, A Literature Review, Nicole Aylwin, Lisa Moore

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

All Canadians, regardless of financial or other barriers, should have reasonable access to justice. Yet the reality remains that for the nearly 20% of Canadians living in rural and remote communities, accessing justice remains difficult, largely due to the unique challenges to service provision that exist in rural and remote communities. These challenges are rooted in the geographical, demographic, and social and cultural characteristics that define rurality and remoteness, and in the varied combinations of these elements that determine the legal and social service needs of individual communities. Moreover, rural and remote areas have various infrastructure, resource, communication and social …

Medical Tourism: How Far Are You Willing To Go To Save Money?, Thomas J. Prinsen, Louis K. Falk, Javier Martinez

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

Medical needs of Americans are increasing as the population is aging and struggling with obesity. The addition of new medical technology and techniques, their widespread availability, and procedural improvements have created a more open market for medical providers. Costly procedures in cardiology and orthopedics serve as examples of increasingly needed medical treatments. Individuals, businesses and insurance companies have struggled to find ways to pay for these necessary procedures. Traditionally, in the U.S. the majority of medical procedures have been performed locally. Because of the rising costs associated with these procedures individuals and some healthcare providers are now looking to foreign …

A sensitivity analysis was performed for a biomass market with different discount rates and biomass prices as well as policy scenarios including propriety tax exemption, carbon offset payments, and the inclusion of farmland for biomass production. The model was applied to a four-county study area in Kentucky representing conditions commonly found in the Ohio River Valley. Results showed that both biomass price and discount rate have a can strongly influence the amount …

Setting The Stage For Ferguson: Housing Discrimination And Segregation In St. Louis, Rigel C. Oliveri Nov 2015

Setting The Stage For Ferguson: Housing Discrimination And Segregation In St. Louis, Rigel C. Oliveri

Missouri Law Review

The history of St. Louis is replete with discriminatory housing laws, policies, and practices: racially restrictive covenants, redlining, blockbusting and white flight, and exclusionary zoning. While these were common in virtually every part of the United States, they were particularly egregious, widespread, and pervasive in industrial Midwestern cities like Chicago, Detroit, and St. Louis – which saw a large influx of blacks migrating from the south at the close of the nineteenth century. In fact, three of the most foundational housing cases originated in St. Louis. When we look closely at these cases – not just the legal principles that …

Perceptions Of The Use Of Indigenous Languages Pedagogy To Facilitate Citizenship Education In Multicultural Countries, Bagegulira Faizal

Master of Education

The purpose of the study was to gain an understanding teachers’ perception and interpretations of the tensions generated by their role as teachers an indigenous language as an independent subject for the facilitation of an embedded citizenship education curriculum. Guided by the socio-cultural language-learning theory, the naturalistic qualitative case study was undertaken to discover how teachers of indigenous languages as subjects that emphasize both the language and culture of their particular ethnic communities in a multicultural Uganda, perceive their citizenship education obligations. The findings revealed that there is either rarely taught, or poorly taught or not taught at all. Teachers …

The Victims' Court? A Study Of 622 Victim Participants At The International Criminal Court, Stephen Cody, Eric Stover, Mychelle Balthazard, Alexa Koenig Nov 2015

The Victims' Court? A Study Of 622 Victim Participants At The International Criminal Court, Stephen Cody, Eric Stover, Mychelle Balthazard, Alexa Koenig

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

When the International Criminal Court (ICC) was created in 1998, its founders hailed it as a “victims’ court,” one that would give survivors of mass atrocity an influential voice in the administration of justice. In the nearly two decades since its establishment, thousands of victims have been registered as “victim participants,” and thousands more have applied to the court for acceptance. However, there is now widespread agreement, both inside and outside of the court, that the ICC victim participation programs need reform. Court staff and outside observers have argued that current levels of outreach, care, and support are inadequate and …

Civic Play And Civic Gaps: Can Life Simulation Games Advance Educational Equity?, Christine Bachen, Pedro F. Hernández-Ramos, Chad Raphael, Amanda Waldron Nov 2015

Civic Play And Civic Gaps: Can Life Simulation Games Advance Educational Equity?, Christine Bachen, Pedro F. Hernández-Ramos, Chad Raphael, Amanda Waldron

Communication

Digital games and simulations (DG&S) could help mitigate inequities in civic education and participation, which are found in many contemporary democracies. Yet incorporating DG&S into the curriculum may reinforce or introduce inequities for students who are less engaged by game-based learning. A quasi-experimental study of 301 U.S. high school students in social studies classes examined whether prior academic performance, civic engagement, civic game play experience and gender affected how (and which) students benefit from playing a life simulation game. Dependent variables included several civic dispositions: justice-oriented citizenship norms and interest in politics, news, and global issues. The simulation game especially …

Locating A Wildlife Corridor For The Wild Tiger In India, Carmen George Nov 2015

Locating A Wildlife Corridor For The Wild Tiger In India, Carmen George

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

The tiger (Panthera Tigris) has been on the ICUN red list of endangered species since 1972. In the early 20th century, 100,000 wild tigers roamed Asia and today approximately 3,600 remain. India is home to over half of the remaining wild tigers and continues to struggle in creating effective conservation plans. Poaching, habitat destruction and prey depletion are several primary causes of tiger population degradation and remain major barriers to rejuvenation of healthy populations in the wild. Wildlife corridors are essential to the process of repairing fragmented habitats. Through the use of GIS and remote sensing this …

Economic Drivers Of Contemporary Smallholder Agriculture In A Transitional Economy: A Case Study Of Hu Village From Southwest China, Z Hu, S Rahman Nov 2015

Economic Drivers Of Contemporary Smallholder Agriculture In A Transitional Economy: A Case Study Of Hu Village From Southwest China, Z Hu, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Based on an in-depth case study of a rural community, this paper documents the contemporary state of Chinese smallholder agriculture and the changes that it has been experiencing in the context of dramatic socio-economic transition through the lens of three main economic drivers: livelihood diversification, market conditions and government interventions. Results reveal that the change in Chinese smallholder agriculture has been complex and multidimensional. All three factors exert profound influence and shape the current state of Chinese agriculture. Massive rural-urban migration has resulted in labour shortages, which in turn have led to a reduction in agricultural diversity and land use …

Antarctic Streams As A Potential Source Of Iron For The Southern Ocean, William Berry Lyons, Kelsey R. Dailey, Kathleen A. Welch, Kelly M. Deuerling, Susan A. Welch, Diane M. Mcknight Nov 2015

Antarctic Streams As A Potential Source Of Iron For The Southern Ocean, William Berry Lyons, Kelsey R. Dailey, Kathleen A. Welch, Kelly M. Deuerling, Susan A. Welch, Diane M. Mcknight

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

Due to iron’s role in oceanic primary production, there has been great interest in quantifying the importance of Fe in regions where concentrations are very low and macronutrients, nitrate and phosphate, are available. Measurements of filterable (i.e., <0.4 μm) Fe concentrations in streams from Taylor Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, suggest that coastal-zone stream Fe input to the Southern Ocean could potentially play an important role in primary production in nearshore regions. Filterable Fe (fFe) data from streams in the McMurdo Dry Valleys were used to represent glacier meltwater that flows through ice-free landscape with the potential of transporting Fe to the Antarctic coastal zone. Estimates of potential fFe flux to the Antarctic Peninsula region using our mean fFe concentration of 10.6 µg L–1 combined with an estimate of ice-free area for the Antarctic Peninsula result in an fFe flux of 1.2 × 107 g yr–1. Although small compared to iceberg and aeolian Fe fluxes, future stream input to the Southern Ocean could increase due to glacier retreat and melting, thus increasing the fFe flux from glacier meltwater streams.

Characterizing And Mapping The Field Scale Spatial Variability Of Surface Horizon Soil Properties And Water Content With Noninvasive Em38, Ryan W.R. Schroeder, Robert Austin, Joshua Heitman, Adam Howard

Purdue GIS Day

The spatial variability of physical soil properties at the field scale is increasingly important in agriculture and natural resource management. Changes in topography, parent material, management practices, erosion/deposition rates, etc. can influence the variability of the soil’s physical properties and help guide management and land use plans. The Geonics EM38 is a noninvasive geophysical sensor which is used to measure the apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) of the soil through electromagnetic induction – primarily influenced by clay content, soil moisture content, and salinity. Soil moisture has been found to be a significant contributor to ECa and is therefore useful in determining …

Naturalized Daily Streamflow Reconstruction For The Upper Wabash River, Sanoar Rahman, Laura C. Bowling Nov 2015

Naturalized Daily Streamflow Reconstruction For The Upper Wabash River, Sanoar Rahman, Laura C. Bowling

Purdue GIS Day

During the 1960s, the United States Army Corps of Engineers constructed a number of dams in the Upper Wabash watershed in Indiana, primarily for flood control, hydropower and recreation. In order to investigate the impact of other environmental changes, such as changes in land management and climate on streamflow, it is necessary to reconstruct what the natural flow of the impounded river would be without the influence of the upstream reservoirs.
