Foreign direct investment, which quantifies the extent of economic activity in Greater Portland due to investors from other countries. Foreign visitors, which describes the number of people who visit Greater Portland from other countries and estimates the amount of money they spend while they are here; Foreign-born residents, quantifying the number …
The Geography Of Bankruptcy, Laura N. Coordes
The Geography Of Bankruptcy, Laura N. Coordes
Vanderbilt Law Review
Companies routinely file bankruptcy cases in venues that have no meaningful connection to the company, its operations, or its stakeholders. This practice (1) divorces bankruptcy and venue from their ties to location; (2) disrupts the fundamental balance underlying the Bankruptcy Code by shifting the focus exclusively to the needs of sophisticated parties; and (3) shuts out parties who have a right to participate in bankruptcy proceedings, which contravenes due process and raises fairness concerns. To solve these problems, this Article proposes new procedures that mandate a thorough discussion of venue considerations in bankruptcy cases. By requiring parties to justify their …

The Greco-Roman Water Catchment Theater: Identification And Distribution, Allison Nicole Lee
The Greco-Roman Water Catchment Theater: Identification And Distribution, Allison Nicole Lee
Theses and Dissertations
Water has always been a necessity for human beings. How individuals and populations have reacted to, adapted, and manipulated water is apparent in the archaeological record. Ancient urban water systems often utilized a number of components, including aqueducts, siphons, underground tunneling, and cisterns. This thesis proposes that Greco-Roman theaters were utilized as components of ancient urban water systems in specific environments, and that this theater type may be identified in the archaeological and literary record as a water catchment theater. The goal of my thesis was to define, describe, identify, and plot the distribution of water catchment theaters in …

Teaching Abroad: Ensuring A Good Opportunity Is Really Great, Garry Mcdaniel
Teaching Abroad: Ensuring A Good Opportunity Is Really Great, Garry Mcdaniel
All Faculty and Staff Scholarship
With increased globalization, more colleges and universities are establishing faculty exchanges, study abroad programs, collaborative research efforts, and technical assistance programs with counterparts overseas resulting in enhanced faculty development, increased learning for students, revenue generation and prestige for the partnering institutions. For faculty, the opportunity to teach abroad can be a fulfilling and career enhancing experience. However, if faculty are inadequately prepared and supported, valuable time and resources are wasted, student learning is impacted, and the image of the institution and faculty member may suffer. The purpose of this research was to determine how faculty and their home institutions can …
Conservation Through Limited Development: An Approach For Land Conservancies, Catherine Joy Tarone
Conservation Through Limited Development: An Approach For Land Conservancies, Catherine Joy Tarone
Master's Theses
The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County is interested in determining the approach that it may take if it decides to pursue conservation and limited development as a strategy to preserve land. In using conservation and limited development, the Conservancy may put into practice its core values by employing this intensely-collaborative conservation tool and informing itself about development, conservation, collaboration and financing, in order to meet multiple community needs.
Information about the limited development process was collected from books, news articles and personal communications with professionals to determine its components. Each chapter of this report analyzes one component, putting …

Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) produce large amounts of animal waste, which potentially pollutes air, soil and water and affects human health if not appropriately managed. This study uses meteorological and CAFO data and applies an air pollution dispersion model (CALPUFF) to estimate ammonia concentrations at locations downwind of HOG CAFOs and to evaluate the disproportionate exposure of children, elderly, whites and minorities to the pollutant. Ammonia is one of the gases emitted by swine CAFOs and could affect human health. Local indicator of spatial autocorrelation (LISA) analysis uses census block demographic data to identify hot spots where both ammonia …

The Terrifying And The Beautiful: An Ecocritical Approach To Alexandre Hogue's Erosion Series, Ann K. Hartvigsen
The Terrifying And The Beautiful: An Ecocritical Approach To Alexandre Hogue's Erosion Series, Ann K. Hartvigsen
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the work of Texan painter Alexandre Hogue, and specifically how his 1930s Erosion Series, paintings of wind-ravaged farms during the Dust Bowl, promotes environmental attitudes long before America had a well developed ecological language. It analyzes the Erosion Series in the context of Hogue's personal land ethics and those of his artistic contemporaries, showing that the 1930s series strives to depict the devastation caused by both drought and aggressive farming practices. A comparison of Hogue's work to Regionalist artists like Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood reveals that Regionalists' depictions of land during the 1930s created an …

The Role Of Gravitational Instabilities In Deposition Of Volcanic Ash, I Manzella, C Bonadonna, Jc Phillips, H Monnard
The Role Of Gravitational Instabilities In Deposition Of Volcanic Ash, I Manzella, C Bonadonna, Jc Phillips, H Monnard
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Volcanic ash is a significant hazard for areas close to volcanoes and for aviation. Gravitational instabilities forming at the bottom of spreading volcanic clouds have been observed in many explosive eruptions. Here we present the first quantitative description of the dynamics of such instabilities, and correlate this with the characteristics of the fall deposit from observations of the 4 May 2010 Eyjafjallajökull (Iceland) eruption. Gravitational instabilities initially took the form of downward-propagating fingers that formed continuously at the base of the cloud, and appeared to be advected passively at the crosswind speed. Measurements of finger propagation are consistent with initial …

Creep Cavitation Bands Control Porosity And Fluid Flow In Lower Crustal Shear Zones, L Menegon, F Fusseis, H Stunitz, X Xiao
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Shear zones channelize fluid flow in Earth’s crust. However, little is known about deep crustal fluid migration and how fluids are channelized and distributed in a deforming lower crustal shear zone. This study investigates the deformation mechanisms, fluid-rock interaction, and development of porosity in a monzonite ultramylonite from Lofoten, northern Norway. The rock was deformed and transformed into an ultramylonite under lower crustal conditions (temperature = 700–730 °C, pressure = 0.65–0.8 GPa). The ultramylonite consists of feldspathic layers and domains of amphibole + quartz + calcite, which result from hydration reactions of magmatic clinopyroxene. The average grain size in both …

Determinants Of Crop Diversity In The Regions Of Bangladesh (1990–2008), S Rahman, Mmh Kazal
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The paper measures the level of crop diversity and identifies factors influencing diversification using a panel data of 17 regions of Bangladesh covering a 19 year period (1990–2008). Results revealed the trends that agricultural areas allocated to high-yielding variety rice, spices and vegetables has increased, while areas cultivating traditional rice, minor cereals, oilseeds, pulses, jute and sugarcane has declined at variable rates across regions with significant differences. The level of crop diversity is also significantly different across regions and has decreased in 2008 from its 1990 level in most regions except Faridpur, Khulna and Sylhet. Among the determinants, an increase …

The Southeast Asian mainland is located in the central path of the Asian summer monsoon, a region where paleoclimatic data are still sparse. Here we present a multi-proxy (TOC, C/N, δ13C, biogenic silica, and XRF elemental data) study of a 1.5 m sediment/peat sequence from Lake Pa Kho, northeast Thailand, which is supported by 20 AMS 14C ages. Hydroclimatic reconstructions for Pa Kho suggest a strengthened summer monsoon between BC 170–AD 370, AD 800–960, and after AD 1450; and a weakening of the summer monsoon between AD 370–800, and AD 1300–1450. Increased run-off and a higher nutrient supply after AD …

International Comovement Of Economic Fluctuations: A Spatial Analysis, Miao Wang, M. C. Sunny Wong, Jim Granato
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
We consider the comovement of economic volatility across multiple countries. Using spatial models with data from 187 countries over the period of 1960–2007, we find a strong spatial comovement of economic volatility. More interestingly, the effect of geographical proximity on economic volatility comovement is strongest during the period of international shocks (1973–86), but almost disappears over the globalization era (1987–2007). By way of contrast, the influence of trade relations in determining the comovement of economic volatility is significant over 1987–2007.

Staying Connected: Keeping Justice-Involved Youth “Close To Home” In New York City, Jeffrey A. Butts, Laura Negredo, Evan Elkin
Publications and Research
When justice-involved youth are supervised by local agencies and placed with locally operated programs rather than being sent away to state facilities, they are better able to maintain community ties. They stay connected with their families, and they are more likely to remain in local schools. Policy reforms that localize the justice system are often called “realignment.” New York’s “Close to Home” (or C2H) initiative is a prominent example of youth justice realignment. Launched in 2012, it is the latest chapter in a decade-long commitment by New York State and New York City to improve the justice system for young …
Mapping Chinese Literature As World Literature, Yingjin Zhang
Mapping Chinese Literature As World Literature, Yingjin Zhang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Mapping Chinese Literature as World Literature" Yingjin Zhang revisits the challenge of mapping Chinese literature as world literature in three steps: 1) he delineates of positions of view as proposed by Western scholars who engaged in rethinking world literature(s) in the age of globalization, 2) evaluates consequences of such a new mapping for Chinese literature and tests a different set of "technologies of recognition" (Shih) in the context of Chinese versus Sinophone studies, and 3) returns to the notion of world literature(s) by considering issues of language and translation and entertains a new vision of mobility via …

Positions Of Sinophone Representation In Jin's (金庸) Chivalric Topography, Weijie Song
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Positions of Sinophone Representation in Jin's (金庸) Chivalric Topography" Weijie Song examines Yong Jin's post-1949 Hong Kong chivalric imagination of imperial Beijing and beyond during the Ming-Qing Dynastic transition and the dialects of inclusive exclusion and exclusive inclusion. In Cold War Hong Kong, Jin charted a wide range of chivalric activities: intruding into the political center embodied by the Forbidden City (the "Great Within") and fleeing to peripheral regions such as Xinjiang's Islamic community, the overseas kingdom in Brunei in Southeast Asia, and an unknown place somewhere inside Yangzhou. Song argues that Jin's literary topography suggests a …

Breaking Into The Business: A Guide To Creating A Dynamic Resume Reel And Securing A Job In Today’S Television News Industry, Christina Favuzzi
Journalism
Broadcast journalists are experiencing turbulence in their field of expertise due to increasing digitalization and decreased funding. It is becoming commonplace for reporters to work as one-man-bands, or “multimedia journalists,” shooting and editing their own video in addition to writing and reporting. For people looking to begin a career in the highly competitive broadcast news industry, there is a great deal of information to understand and consider prior to beginning the job search. Creating a dynamic resume reel is central to landing a job as an on-air reporter. However, with the development of digital-first and multimedia journalism, there are certain …

Assessing A Coalition For Outreach And Enrollment In Minnesota’S Health Insurance Exchange, Kim Nichols Dauner
The Qualitative Report
Using a case-study approach, representatives of the Insure Duluth coalition were interviewed in order to evaluate processes, strengths, challenges and outcomes associated with using a coalition approach to community outreach and enrollment in health insurance via the new state marketplace, which is part of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Overall, interview participants cited numerous strengths to the coalition approach as well as technical challenges with enrolling persons in health insurance. They also felt such challenges had the unintended effect of strengthening the relationships between coalition organizations. Community level outcomes were identified as being associated with the coalition’s work. …

Missing Water Markets: A Cautionary Tale Of Governmental Failure, Vanessa Casado-Pérez
Missing Water Markets: A Cautionary Tale Of Governmental Failure, Vanessa Casado-Pérez
Faculty Scholarship
California is facing a water crisis. Water is managed through a variety of mechanisms, including government administration and market tools. This Article argues for a regulated market-based solution. When it comes to water markets, the invisible hand needs help from the visible hand of government to prove effective. Administrative systems and markets are usually portrayed in opposition to each other, as mutually exclusive solutions. Water market advocates suggest government's role is minimal. However, as this Article identifies, to establish and maintain a functioning water market, government needs to play a variety of roles. These include the uncontested role of defining …
