Whom Do You Trust? Doubt And Conspiracy Theories In The 2009 Influenza Pandemic, Shawn C. Smallman Ph.D.
Whom Do You Trust? Doubt And Conspiracy Theories In The 2009 Influenza Pandemic, Shawn C. Smallman Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
The 2009 pandemic of H1N1 influenza led people around the globe to create narratives about the epidemic defined by the question of trust; these narratives ranged from true conspiracy theories to simply accounts in which mistrust and betrayal formed a motif. In particular, most of these narratives reflected a fear of capitalism and globalization, although in specific regions, other issues—such as religion—played a more central role. These stories were not unique to the H1N1 pandemic but rather have appeared with every contemporary outbreak of infectious disease. This paper will examine conspiracy theories and moral panics related to the H1N1 pandemic …

Do You "Park Your Car" Or "Pahk Your Cah''?: The Changing Dialect Of Southern New Hampshire, Melanie Platt
Inquiry Journal 2015
This article reports on a sociolinguistic study conducted in the summer of 2014 in which I interviewed native southern New Hampshire men and women, aged 18 to 89, listening for rhoticity (r variable) in their speech. I found that speakers younger than 60 years old are now exhibiting fully rhotic speech, which contrasts with the results of earlier studies.Possible motivations for the shift were also examined and compared with more recent studies on the r variable. I found in this study a correlation between the non-rhotic speech of many older speakers and small farming communities. The shift from non-rhotic to …

A Contemporary Decennial Examination Of Changing Agricultural Field Sizes Using Landsat Time Series Data, Emma V. White, David P. Roy
A Contemporary Decennial Examination Of Changing Agricultural Field Sizes Using Landsat Time Series Data, Emma V. White, David P. Roy
GSCE Faculty Publications
Field size distributions and their changes have not been studied over large areas as field size change datasets are not available. This study quantifies agricultural field size changes in a consistent manner using Landsat satellite data that also provide geographic context for the observed decadal scale changes. Growing season cloud-free Landsat 30 m resolution images acquired from 9 to 25 years apart were used to extract field object classifications at seven sites located by examination of a global agricultural yield map, agricultural production statistics, literature review, and analysis of the imagery in the US Landsat archive. High spatial resolution data …

Intra-Household Wealth Inequality And Economic Development: Evidence From Karnataka, India, Deepak Malghan, Hema Swaminathan
Intra-Household Wealth Inequality And Economic Development: Evidence From Karnataka, India, Deepak Malghan, Hema Swaminathan
Working Papers
While wealth inequality has attracted attention in the recent inequality literature, such inequalities within the most elementary social unit -- the household -- remain neglected. We develop an empirical framework for measuring intra-household wealth inequality. Using unique individual-level wealth data from Karnataka, India, we report how a third of overall wealth inequality is attributable to inequality within the household. A significant barrier to interpreting intra-household wealth inequalities is the public goods nature of several household assets. We overcome this limitation with a simple normative framework derived from the Atkinson index. While welfare measures are incommensurable across different households, welfare loss …

Stemming algorithms are used in information retrieval systems, indexers, text mining, text classifiers etc., to extract stems or roots of different words, so that words derived from the same stem or root are grouped together. Many stemming algorithms were built in different natural languages. Khoja stemmer is one of the known and widely used Arabic stemmers. In this paper, we introduced a new light and heavy Arabic stemmer. This new stemmer is presented in this study and compared with two well-known Arabic stemmers. Results showed that accuracy of our stemmer is slightly better than the accuracy yielded by each one …

Marine Animalia Organism Diversity And Reef Condition On Two Reef Sites At Big Creek Beach And Boca Del Drago, Bocas Del Toro, Panamá, Bri Tiffany
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Ocean acidification, climate change, overfishing, and coastal development are endangering coral reefs across the globe. In Bocas del Toro, Panamá, coral reefs are especially threatened by the rapid growth in tourism and the subsequent anthropogenic effects caused by an increased human presence. To evaluate reef condition in this area, a study comparing percent coverage of live and dead coral as well as the diversity of marine Animalia organisms was conducted at one reef site in Big Creek beach and one reef site in Boca del Drago, Isla Colón, Bocas del Toro. It was predicted that dead coral cover would be …

Health, Education and Human Development Awards
Research on family travel decision making has shown that the roles of husband, wife and children have evolved through the years. In a research conducted about 40 years ago husbands were found more dominant in travel decisions (Jenkins, 1978). This study was replicated by Litvin, Xu and Kang (2004) more recently and a decrease in husband’s influence and increase in joint decisions were observed. Local food preference being one of the decisions made during travel, creates positive impact on the region through backward linkages between local food producers and tourism industry (Cohen, & Avieli, 2004; Torres, 2002; Telfer & Wall, …

The biological, ecological, and evolutionary significance of serpentine habitats has long been recognised. We used an integrated physiochemical dataset combining plot spatial data with temporal data from tree cores to evaluate changes in soils and vegetation. Data suggest that this unique habitat is undergoing a transition, endangering local biodiversity and endemic plant species. The objective of this work was to analyse the vegetation dynamics of a xeric serpentine savanna located in the Mid-Atlantic, USA. We employed vegetation surveys of 32 10 × 15 m quadrats to obtain woody species composition, density, basal area, and developed a spatial physiochemical dataset of …

Why Is The Color Of One’S Skin So Significant In Southern Mexico?, Savalda Jacqueline Platt
Why Is The Color Of One’S Skin So Significant In Southern Mexico?, Savalda Jacqueline Platt
Capstone Collection
The following research examines and addresses an ideology about race and the color of skin. The goal is to bring forth knowledge about a Mexican community that experiences discrimination and racism due to their skin color. It will view how and why skin color became a tool against a community that has existed in Mexico for centuries. The villages reside off the coastal areas of Mexico evolved from the ramifications of slave trading and owning. Mixed marriages between villages altered the color fabric of Mexico’s society in many ways; fair skin was not the dominant player any longer. This began …
