The Random Forest Algorithm With Application To Multispectral Image Analysis, Barrett E. Lowe
The Random Forest Algorithm With Application To Multispectral Image Analysis, Barrett E. Lowe
Computer Science Theses
The need for computers to make educated decisions is growing. Various methods have been developed for decision making using observation vectors. Among these are supervised and unsupervised classifiers. Recently, there has been increased attention to ensemble learning--methods that generate many classifiers and aggregate their results. Breiman (2001) proposed Random Forests for classification and clustering. The Random Forest algorithm is ensemble learning using the decision tree principle. Input vectors are used to grow decision trees and build a forest. A classification decision is reached by sending an unknown input vector down each tree in the forest and taking the majority vote …

The Roman Conquest Of Britain, Jason Delaney
The Roman Conquest Of Britain, Jason Delaney
HIM 1990-2015
In 43 CE, Britain became part of the Roman Empire and was systematically conquered for nearly half a century. The province had valuable natural resources to plunder, but the decision to invade was based upon more than its material wealth. Prestige through warfare was paramount in Roman society, and that is just what Claudius sought to achieve when he launched his invasion of the island. The Romans pushed all the way into Caledonia before stopping and securing the frontier with the construction of Hadrian’s Wall. Britain had become just another component in the colossal machine that was the Roman Empire.

An Exploration Of Text And Illustrations For Implicit And Explicit Gender Bias And Stereotypes In Caldecott Award And Honor Books From 2001-2014, Jessica Kunkel
HIM 1990-2015
Children’s literature is a critical aspect during a child’s development; the messages portrayed in children’s books can affect the development of gender identity in young children and can affect how a child with act and perceive the world around them in the future (Tsao, 2008). Expanding on this research this study aimed to determine if award winning children’s literature contained implicit and explicit gender stereotypes and biases in the illustrations and text. The sample examined was Caldecott Award and Honor books from 2001 through 2014; the sample size was did not include biographies, autobiographies, informational books, concept books, poetry, and …

Adolescent Girls, Human Rights And The Expanding Climate Emergency, Holly G. Atkinson, Judith Bruce
Adolescent Girls, Human Rights And The Expanding Climate Emergency, Holly G. Atkinson, Judith Bruce
Publications and Research
Many adolescent girls—the poorest girls in the poorest communities—already live in an “emergency.” Humanitarian crises only amplify the call on their coping and caring capacities, while exacerbating their vulnerabilities. The frequency and intensity of emergencies, including natural disasters, conflicts, and infectious disease outbreaks such as Ebola, appear to be growing.1 These emergencies threaten entire communities and whole countries, often with global implications. Many become virtually permanent. The authors urge key actors responding to both the threats and opportunities that climate change poses to understand adolescent girls as exceptionally at risk on the one hand, and as exceptionally resilient and …

Correlation Between Crime And Vegetation : A Case Study Of Jefferson County, Kentucky., Yi Ling Chan
Correlation Between Crime And Vegetation : A Case Study Of Jefferson County, Kentucky., Yi Ling Chan
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
Conflicting evidence exists about environmental determinants of crime. While scholars agree there is a relationship between environmental factors and crime, there is not consistency among measures of associations. Looking specifically at the influence of vegetation, there is disagreement as to whether vegetation promotes or deters crime. Some studies show criminals use vegetation as a tool to conceal themselves, while others show vegetation serves as a territory marker, which discourages criminals. My research explores these factors within Jefferson County, Kentucky’s largest and most urban, using NDVI as a proxy for vegetation cover and spatially explicit crime densities aggregated to the census …

The Role Of Landscape Architecture In Sub-Saharan Africa, Nell Mary Patterson
The Role Of Landscape Architecture In Sub-Saharan Africa, Nell Mary Patterson
Landscape Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
Landscape architecture is an emerging practice in the developing world. It is not, however, an established and well known profession. Developing countries, such as those in Sub-Saharan Africa, could benefit from the services that landscape architects provide for society and the built environment. This research addresses where the profession of landscape architecture currently is in Sub-Saharan Africa and speculates where it could go in the future. The International Federation of Landscape Architects held the 2008 Africa Forum in Dubai in order to record the observations of several prominent landscape architecture professionals and students. This research expands on those observations and …
Tales From The Fells, Anne Elder
Tales From The Fells, Anne Elder
MFA in Photography and Integrated Media Theses
Our relationship with the natural world is complicated and under scrutiny as we make irrevocable changes to the earth. We enter the woods to get lost, and to find ourselves. We walk there to find thrills, peace, inspiration; to hear ourselves think, to be surprised, to make profit. Our childish fears may have changed from bears, monsters and getting lost, replaced by adult fears (bears, unsavory humans, getting lost). The woods may frighten us or be a place of comfort, but it is rarely a neutral experience. When we lose access to these spaces, it affects our ability to find …

Super Levee Breached: A New Infrastructure For Magangué, Nikole Cabrera
Super Levee Breached: A New Infrastructure For Magangué, Nikole Cabrera
Architecture Senior Theses
This thesis is an experiment meant to re-imagine fluvial edges as thickened places of habitation. These interventions must exist on land, on the edge, and in the water, acting as a system of infrastructure to spread excess water out, absorb it, and capture it to release it later when necessary. In order to reconcile the relationship between the built and natural environment, the proposed solution requires the integration of water into the overall design. The outcome is a community that can better withstand flooding, recover quickly, and continue on with their daily lives while maintaining their respectable livelihoods.

The True University: Yale's Library From 1843 To 1931, Elizabeth D. James
Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections
By the summer of 1930, Sterling Memorial Library was nearing completion, lacking only the university’s 1.6 million books. At 6:00 AM on July 7, with a ceremonial parade of the library’s earliest accessions, the two-month project of moving the books commenced. Leading the trail of librarians was the head librarian, Andrew Keogh, and the head of the serials cataloguing department, Grace Pierpont Fuller. Fuller was the descendant of James Pierpont, one of the principal founders of Yale, and was carrying the Latin Bible given by her ancestor during the fabled 1701 donation of books that signaled the foundation of the …

Burdens And Benefits Of Climate Change Solutions: A Case Study Of Climate Change Skeptics And Deniers In Rural Nevada, Patricia Dutcher
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This dissertation is an ethnographic case study of climate change Doubtfuls and Dismissives with the purpose of understanding their perceptions of water use and renewable energy in the context of a changing climate. I also investigate the information sources and messages they use to understand climate change and climate change solutions. The Global Warming's Six Americas project identifies climate change Doubtfuls and Dismissives as one third of the American public, and an active voice in US climate change policy (Maibach et al, 2009; Leiserowitz et al., 2014). Doubtfuls are people with skeptical attitudes towards anthropogenic climate change, while Dismissives deny …

Coastlines have traditionally been engineered to maintain structural stability and to protect property from storm‐related damage, but their ability to endure will be challenged over the next century. The use of vegetation to reduce erosion on ocean‐facing mainland and barrier island shorelines – including the sand dunes and beaches on these islands – could be part of a more flexible strategy. Although there is growing enthusiasm for using vegetation for this purpose, empirical data supporting this approach are lacking. Here, we identify the potential roles of vegetation in coastal protection, including the capture of sediment, ecological succession, and the building …
The Effectiveness Of Alternative Dissertation Models In Graduate Education, Rebecca Arlene Thomas
The Effectiveness Of Alternative Dissertation Models In Graduate Education, Rebecca Arlene Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
Historically, the doctoral dissertation has had two purposes: to train young scholars in proper research methodology, and to contribute original findings to research. However, some feel that the traditional dissertation format falls short of these goals for two reasons. First, the majority of dissertations never get published in academic journals, and dissertations are unlikely to get cited in academic articles. Second, many students in doctoral programs see little authenticity in traditional dissertations because the writing style and process differ from that of academic articles. In response to these concerns, many Instructional Technology programs have implemented alternative dissertation formats. This study …

Phylogenetic Relationships Of Samydaceae And Taxonomic Revision Of The Species Of Casearia In South-Central Asia, Tharangamala Samarakoon
Phylogenetic Relationships Of Samydaceae And Taxonomic Revision Of The Species Of Casearia In South-Central Asia, Tharangamala Samarakoon
Dissertations
The flowering plant family Samydaceae was recently reinstated to include 14 genera and about 256 species of tropical trees and shrubs. Preliminary analyses of relationships in the family, however, indicated that the largest genus in the family, Casearia, is not monophyletic and that several smaller groups are probably misplaced. In order to affirm or refute those hypotheses, additional DNA sequence data with broader taxon sampling from the Old World were gathered for phylogenetic analysis. In particular, rapidly evolving plastid (matK, ndhF, psbA-trnH, trnL, and trnL-F) and nuclear (EMB2765 and GBSSI) DNA …
Tribal Food Sovereignty In The American Southwest, Julia Guarino
Tribal Food Sovereignty In The American Southwest, Julia Guarino
Journal of Food Law & Policy
Food is an issue that implicates tribal sovereignty for historical, cultural, and public health reasons. This article undertakes a policy analysis of the importance of food to tribal sovereignty, and suggests that tribes, many of which have begun to do so already, make robust use of the concept of "food sovereignty" as part of their overarching project of protecting and promoting tribal sovereignty in general. This article sets the stage for understanding the importance of food sovereignty to tribes by exploring the history of food and culture in the American Southwest, where the public health consequences of changes in diet …
The Effects Of Emotional Intelligence And Relational Climate Of Innovation, Lori D. Kendall
The Effects Of Emotional Intelligence And Relational Climate Of Innovation, Lori D. Kendall
Student Scholarship
The relentless challenge to innovate is the DNA of high-technology firms, and continues to capture attention of scholars and practitioners alike. High-technology firms grow faster on intellectual capital assets with shorter life expectancy; they must pivot in response to external forces more quickly. The challenge for R&D leaders is to ensure that R&D groups provide new opportunities for growth by effective transfer of technology ideation to commercial products. Leaders in these dynamic environments operate in microfoundations of organizational routines and processes within an organization that motivate the sensing, seizing, and executing dynamic capabilities. R&D leaders within the firm are forced …
Transcendence Through Play: Child-Centered Play Therapy And Young Children With Autism, Katherine Elizabeth Carrizales
Transcendence Through Play: Child-Centered Play Therapy And Young Children With Autism, Katherine Elizabeth Carrizales
Dissertations
This qualitative study was designed to explore the impact of child-centered play therapy on young children identified as having autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Children with autism often experience difficulties in social, communication, behavioral, and relational domains. Often the treatment protocol for these children is an intense schedule of behavioral interventions designed to decrease problematic and increase desired behaviors. However, little emphasis has been placed on the child’s core deficits in relational skills and even less importance has been placed on his/her adequate emotional development. The current study sought to understand the impact of participation in play therapy on emotional and …

Three Essays On Panel Data Estimation, Alexander Houser
Dissertations
This work discusses various aspects of panel data estimation. In chapter one, an algorithm for semiparametric random effects estimation is proposed. The performance of bootstrap-based confidence intervals for the proposed estimators are examined and found reasonable. The algorithm is also applied to a set of U.S. state level medical expenditure data to estimate the medical Engel curve. In the second chapter, the predictive performance of various parametric and semiparametric panel data estimators is compared on the same dataset of U.S. state level medical expenditures as well as out of sample forecast performance and bootstrap bias-corrected mean square errors of the …

Towards An Expansion Of The Salt City Harvest Farm: Exploring A Community Farm’S Impact, Challenges, And The Agricultural Ways And Aspirations Of Its New American Farmers, Rose Tardiff
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The Salt City Harvest Farm (SCHF) is a community farm located in Kirkville, NY cultivated by and for New Americans living in Syracuse who wish to expand gardening beyond their backyards and community gardens. While the farm has been operational for two growing seasons, it is an all-volunteer project with limited capacity, and concerns about long-term sustainability. This research was designed to be pragmatic; it seeks to inform the future structure and programming of the SCHF by identifying its projectspecific challenges, drawing on the agricultural aspirations of its New American participants, and investigating how other refugee farming projects in the …
Operation Judicial Review: A Comparative Analysis Of The Role Of The Judiciary In Domestic And Foreign Detention And Material Support Cases During The War On Terror, Tyler Mitchell
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The Bush and Obama administrations have pursued a military campaign during the War on Terror in which “the world is a battlefield.” The globalized nature of contemporary warfare has tested the limits of constitutional protections for individuals under the control of the United States government. My distinction thesis focuses on the extension of constitutional rights and, in turn, the maintenance of the separation of powers during the War on Terror. I provide a comparative analysis of the role of the judiciary to reconcile constitutional First Amendment free speech & association and habeus corpus rights with federal executive & legislative counterterrorism …
Geographic Patterns Of Genetic Distribution Within Calochortus Gunnisonii In The Central And Southern Rocky Mountains, Ryan Scott Fuller
Geographic Patterns Of Genetic Distribution Within Calochortus Gunnisonii In The Central And Southern Rocky Mountains, Ryan Scott Fuller
Master's Theses
Organismal population ranges and genetic architecture have largely been shaped by climatic events. The Quaternary Period (2.6 million years to present) has been characterized by a series of climatic events manifested as Ice Ages. During glacial periods, plants and animals in temperate and arctic regions were restricted to small patches of suitable habitat less affected by expanding glaciers and extreme cooling. These refugia held importance for the persistence of organisms through glacier interphases. Mountain system vegetation in temperate latitudes was affected by patchy glacier patterns that separated some species into multiple refugia. The isolation of such populations has had a …
