Robert Frost’S New Hampshire, Philip Larkin’S England, And Seamus Heaney’S Ireland: Non-Urban Place And Democratic Poetry, Faisal I. Rawashdeh
Robert Frost’S New Hampshire, Philip Larkin’S England, And Seamus Heaney’S Ireland: Non-Urban Place And Democratic Poetry, Faisal I. Rawashdeh
Dissertations
In Anglo-American Modernist poetry, place is reduced to an analogue for the cultural degradation brought forth by the disruptive experience of modernity. This demotion stands in sharp contrast to the representation of place as a center of value in the poetry of Robert Frost, Philip Larkin, and Seamus Heaney. In this dissertation, I shall explain this value in terms of its connection to a particular cultural substance which Frost, Larkin, and Heaney deem foundational for their non-ideological terms of belonging to place. Frost embraces New England vernacularism first as the basis for his egalitarianism and second as the core substance …
The Origins Of Legislation, Ganesh Sitaraman
The Origins Of Legislation, Ganesh Sitaraman
Notre Dame Law Review
Although legislation is at the center of legal debates on statutory interpretation, administrative law, and delegation, little is known about how legislation is actually drafted. If scholars pay any attention to Congress at all, they tend to focus on what happens after legislation is introduced, ignoring how the draft came to exist in the first place. In other words, they focus on the legislative process, not the drafting process. The result is that our account of Congress, the legislative process, and the administrative state is impoverished, and debates in statutory interpretation and administrative law are incomplete. This Article seeks to …
From Literacy To Literacies: Negotiating Multiple Literacies In The English Classroom, Breanne S. Campbell
From Literacy To Literacies: Negotiating Multiple Literacies In The English Classroom, Breanne S. Campbell
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
This dissertation is a narrative description of my teaching moves as I attempted to negotiate within my classroom both traditional print literacy and new literacies afforded by emerging technology. In this study, I sought to reconcile my rhetoric with my reality (Zeichner, 1999) by teaching students how to read and design multimodal compositions within the traditional framework and curriculum required by my school district. Students composed traditional memoirs and then participated in the synaesthesia process by remediating their memoirs using technology. Students were also asked to write a Statement of Goals and Choices (Shipka, 2011), reflecting on their own rhetorical …
Jessie Fauset’S Not-So-New Negro Womanhood: The Harlem Renaissance, The Long Nineteenth Century, And Legacies Of Feminine Representation, Meredith Goldsmith
Jessie Fauset’S Not-So-New Negro Womanhood: The Harlem Renaissance, The Long Nineteenth Century, And Legacies Of Feminine Representation, Meredith Goldsmith
English and Creative Writing Faculty Publications
Fauset’s texts offer a repository of precisely what critic Alain Locke labeled retrograde: seemingly outdated plotlines and tropes that draw upon multiple literary, historical, and popular cultural sources. This essay aims to change the way we read Fauset by excavating this literary archive and exploring how the literary “past” informs the landscape of Fauset’s fiction. Rather than viewing Fauset’s novels as deviations from or subversive instantiations of modernity, I view them as part of a long nineteenth-century tradition of gendered representation. Instead of claiming a subversiveness that Fauset might have rejected or a conservatism that fails to account for the …

The Effect Of Temperature And Relative Humidity On The Corrosion Rates Of Copper And Silver In Electronic Equipment In The Presence Of Sulfur Environment, Kanan Pujara
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Data center consume a significant amount of energy for the continuous air-conditioning of the servers with high internal heat loads and to maintain the indoor temperatures within recommended operating levels as recommended by ASHRAE. As an alternate source to air-conditioning, air-side economizers are used to reduce power consumption. However, there is a reluctance in using this technique due to undetermined equipment reliability by introducing outside air pollutants which over time could cause failures. There is a need to know the degree of reliability degradation when the equipment is operated, outside the recommended range, in the allowable temperature-humidity range in geographies …
Constitutionalizing Fetal Rights: A Salutary Tale From Ireland, Fiona De Londras
Constitutionalizing Fetal Rights: A Salutary Tale From Ireland, Fiona De Londras
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
In 1983, Ireland became the first country in the world to constitutionalize fetal rights. The 8th Amendment to the Constitution, passed by a referendum of the People, resulted in constitutional protection for “the right to life of the unborn,” which was deemed “equal” to the right to life of the “mother.” Since then, enshrining fetal rights in constitutions and in legislation has emerged as a key part of anti-abortion campaigning. This Article traces the constitutionalization of fetal rights in Ireland and its implications for law, politics, and women. In so doing, it provides a salutary tale of such an approach. …
Spatial Analysis Of Distributions And Habitat Conditions Of Fallopia Japonica (Japanese Knotweed) Invasive Species Applying Unmanned Helicopter Remote Sensing, Jiazhen Zhang
Great Lakes Center Masters Theses
Abstract:
Fallopia japonica (Japanese knotweed) is a perennial herbaceous plant that is native to East Asia. It is considered as one of the worst invasive species worldwide because of its serious impact on biological diversity and human activities (Lowe et al., 2001). Once established, Japanese knotweed forms dense stands that shade and crowd out native plant species. The objectives of this research were to verify and confirm the distribution of Japanese knotweed as published online by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) – iMap and to identify the geographic areas of spreading and the local habitat conditions. In …

Research Associating Gender And Government Privatization: Lessons From International Literature, Lauren Bock Mullins, Karina Moreno Saldivar
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
This study reviews several studies that have examined the association between government privatization and outsourcing and women. The reviewed studies shed light on the examined association in Italy, India and the United States. It argues that governments have fewer incentives to regain control once the responsibilities associated with protecting women’s interests are privatized.

How "Global" Are Global History Teachers? Secondary Social Studies Teachers' Understandings Of Global Awareness And Global Education, Ardyth L. Watson
Dissertations - ALL
Although global history has been a part of the discipline of social studies in New York State for a number of years, the inclusion of global education and skills has been less prevalent in the discipline. This lack of global perspectives in education has proven to be detrimental to the global awareness of American students. (Roper for National Geographic Foundation, 2006; Harvard University, 2004; Holm and Farber, 2002; Clarke, 2004). Global history teachers play a key role in the dissemination of global content that may contribute to increasing global awareness of students. Yet teachers, themselves, may have limited global awareness …
In Defense Of Magic: Using Fantasy Literature In The Classroom, Marisa Florence Cignarella
In Defense Of Magic: Using Fantasy Literature In The Classroom, Marisa Florence Cignarella
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This thesis argues for the greater inclusion of fantasy literature in high school and middle school English classrooms. Through an analysis of the popularity of fantasy series, including recent movies and their widespread pop cultural appeal, this thesis illustrates that fantasy resonates with many readers. A close examination of various works of fantasy literature appropriate to be read in full or excerpted in the classroom demonstrates that fantasy usefully illustrates various literary concepts, such as symbolism, metaphor, allusion, allegory, and character foils; provides clear examples of the hero's journey, which appear in various canonical texts as well as other media; …

Amicitia Among Women: Fellowship & Pious Practice In The Vitae Of Italian Saints, Andrea Rebecca Boffa
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Very broadly, friendship can be defined as a particular relationship between individuals that is reciprocal in nature. On the one hand, it is a relationship that is universal, but on the other hand friendship is a concept that is socially constructed and historicized through the meanings and functions a particular society gives to it and the ways in which the relationship is realized and performed. Furthermore, friendship is as much an idea as it is a lived experience. This dissertation examines friendship among women in medieval Italian cities of the thirteenth– and fourteenth– centuries. The primary focus of this study …
Community Belonging And Community Building: Women In Early Modern Granada, Nichole Suzanne Prescott
Community Belonging And Community Building: Women In Early Modern Granada, Nichole Suzanne Prescott
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation addresses community belonging, community building, and community identity of women in the city of Granada during the early modern period, showing how women made use of their Granadan social context. It situates the women of Granada in the context of the economic and social turmoil throughout the early modern period, and in particular of the seventeenth century. Non-elite urban women in early modern Granada actively shaped the civic economy, culture, and religious life of the city and, in turn, their lives were shaped by the interplay of these elements. Women played indispensable commercial roles in the market economy, …

Ecology Of Qpx Disease In The Hard Clam Mercenaria Mercenaria, Soren Dahl
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
There is increasing recognition of the role of suspension-feeding bivalves in providing important ecosystem services (e.g. | water clarity, benthic-pelagic coupling, and habitat structure) within estuarine systems. Mercenaria mercenaria (aka hard clams, quahogs) are frequently the dominant suspension-feeder in estuarine systems across the US east coast and have had significant commercial fishery importance and a steadily growing mariculture industry. M. mercenaria have generally not had disease problems which contrasts the microbial infections that have plagued oyster fisheries. Quahog Parasite Unknown (QPX) is the first substantial infectious microbial pathogen affecting hard clams across both wild populations and cultured stocks. QPX is …
The Global Determinants Of Health: A Cross-National Study Of Child Mortality In Less-Developed Countries, 1985-2005, Eric Shircliff
The Global Determinants Of Health: A Cross-National Study Of Child Mortality In Less-Developed Countries, 1985-2005, Eric Shircliff
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Rates of child mortality vary greatly across the globe. The lowest rates are found in developed countries, with the lowest located in Iceland at 3 deaths per 1,000 live births. The highest rates exist in less-developed countries, the highest of which located in Niger at 305 deaths per 1,000 live births. Since 1990, the global rate of child mortality has been declining. However, for many less-developed countries this progress is either slow or stopped. Furthermore, the total number of child deaths in less-developed countries overwhelms that of developed nations, accounting for approximately 99% of global child mortality. The purpose of …

The Time Frames Of New Venture Teams., Jason D’Mello
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The central research question in this dissertation is: how do an individual’s perceptions of time impact a new venture team? Specifically, the study examined whether or not temporal depth relates to how reactive entrepreneurs may be to the environmental changes and threats that they face in their new venture team. I interviewed two cofounders from 40 new venture teams. The results suggest that cofounders in the same new venture team have very different perceptions of time. Their agreement, or congruence of temporal depth (future, past, and total) impacts their new venture team’s perception regarding environmental hostility. This relationship is negatively …
Restoring The Seven Year Rule In The Music Industry, Kathryn Rosenberg
Restoring The Seven Year Rule In The Music Industry, Kathryn Rosenberg
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
INTRODUCTION The United States boasts a bigger entertainment industry than any other country, with Los Angeles regarded as the entertainment capital of the world. Accounts differ as to the explanation for California’s rise to entertainment prominence. One version attributes the flocking to the west coast as a product of Cecil B. DeMille’s last-minute location change for The Squaw Man in 1914 to Los Angeles; but, by 1910, movies had already been filmed in the area. Another explanation focuses on Thomas Edison, who operated in New York and New Jersey, and exerted a significant amount of control over the industry in …

“It is not the law, as we view it, that the state, represented by its Legislature, must forever be quiescent in the administration of the trust doctrine, to the extent of leaving the shores of Lake Michigan in all instances in the same condition and contour as they existed prior to the advent of the white civilization in the territorial area of Wisconsin.”

Variability In The Selection Patterns Of Pronghorn: Are They Really Native Prairie Obligates?, Paul F. Jones, Mike Grue, Mike Suitor, Darren J. Bender, Cormack Gates, Dale Eslinger, Julie Landry-Deboer
The Prairie Naturalist
In Canada, pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) are primarily considered a native prairie obligate because of their reliance on open grassland vegetation communities, although an assessment of local ecological knowledge suggests that pronghorn in Alberta select a variety of habitat from native prairie to cultivated lands. The primary objective of our study was to assess whether pronghorn in Alberta and Saskatchewan are native prairie obligates. Specifically, we addressed the following questions: 1) do individual pronghorn show similar selection patterns for native prairie and, therefore, support the notion that they are prairie obligates; 2) do pronghorn show consistent resource selection patterns …

Shadow States: The Archaeology Of Power In The Marshes Of Southern Mesopotamia, Abdulameer M. Al-Dafar
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Ancient states and early complex societies emerged in areas where urban settlements had the resources to house large populations and where economic and political centers and institutions could be established to run the society. By contrast, marshes, isolated deserts, extreme mountain peaks and thick forests served as refuges for those who wanted to escape from the state. Moreover, taking these examples into consideration, scholars seem to share the assumption that it is unexpected to find urban centers and central political organizations of isolated refuge areas in the ancient world. This dissertation examines the hypothesis that under certain historical and environmental …

American Literary Regionalism And The Sister Arts: Local Color Outside The Lines, Brandi Dawn So
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Abstract of the Dissertation American Literary Regionalism and the Sister Arts: Local Color Outside the Lines by Brandi So Doctor of Philosophy in English Stony Brook University 2015 American literary regionalism was partitioned off from literary realism in a manner that marginalized a movement dominated by women. The gendering of the genre stems in part from the unprecedented integration of women authors into the mainstream market. Conversely, the masculinization of literary ekphrasis still actively shapes its relative discourse. Traditional characterizations of ekphrasis imagine a masculine and aggressive act upon a disempowered, voiceless, feminized object. The timbre of this conversation is …
