Large areas in the tropics and at mid-latitudes experience pronounced seasonality and inter-annual variability in rainfall and hence water availability. Despite the importance of these seasonally dry ecosystems (SDEs) for the global carbon cycling and in providing ecosystem services, a unifying ecohydrological framework to interpret the effects of climatic variability on SDEs is still lacking. A synthesis of existing data about plant functional adaptations in SDEs, covering some 400 species, shows that leaf phenological variations, rather than physiological traits, provide the dominant control on plant-water-carbon interactions. Motivated by this result, the combined implications of leaf phenology and climatic variability on …

Evaluation Of Web Gis Functionality In Academic Libraries, Ningning Kong, Tao Zhang, Ilana Stonebraker

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

The rise of web-based GIS resources has expanded the scale and scope of spatial information seeking in most, if not all, academic libraries. Even without formal GIS training, users can search for spatial information, create customized maps, as well as perform simple spatial analysis. However, few systematic evaluations have been conducted to summarize common web GIS functionalities as GIS moving from traditional desktop applications to the web. In this study, we evaluated and assessed the major functionalities of web GIS applications and their potential value for information discovery and access, using six most popular applications in the academic libraries. In …

Estimating Sediment And Nutrient Loading In The Davis Creek Watershed Using Soil And Water Assessment Tool (Swat), Fatma Ulku Karatas

Masters Theses

The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is a physically model to estimate impact of land cover on water, sediment, and agricultural chemical yields in large, complex yields in large, complex watersheds with fluctuating soils, land use, and management conditions for long periods of time. ln order to simulate the movement of sediment and nutrients, the Davis Creek Watershed is subdivided into 31 homogeneous sub basins, having unique soil and land use properties. The data for each subbasin is grouped into categories of land cover, soil, management within sub basin, draining the sub basin.

The objectives of this study are …

Spatial Patterns Of Drought Persistence In Xinjiang (A.R), China, Guzhaliayi Sataer Jun 2015

Spatial Patterns Of Drought Persistence In Xinjiang (A.R), China, Guzhaliayi Sataer

Masters Theses

Droughts have become one of the crucial hazards affecting Xinjiang, Northwest China, the biggest agricultural province and an important area for the grazing husbandry industry in China. Investigations about droughts in Xinjiang have been conducted from various perspectives by previous researchers. However, there are very few studies that focus on drought persistence and seasonal drought frequency. These issues are particularly important as they influence water resource management and forecasting, crop yields, agricultural development and energy consumption. Seasonal drought persistence describes how well drought conditions persist from one season to next season and is expressed as probability of persistence. In this …

Climate Change Adaptation, Natural Hazard Mitigation, And Innovative Responses, Qing Miao Jun 2015

Climate Change Adaptation, Natural Hazard Mitigation, And Innovative Responses, Qing Miao

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation is comprised of three essays which examine innovation, both technological and institutional, as a response aimed to adapting to climate change and natural disasters. Specifically, the first two papers seek to understand the drivers and implications of adaptation-related technological innovations. The third paper draws on the policy innovation theory to examine factors that shape the decision of state governments to engage in comprehensive climate adaptation planning.

In Chapter 1, I examine the drivers of technical innovation as an important form of adaptation by investigating the impact of three types of natural disasters—floods, droughts and earthquakes—on the patenting activities …

'Sing Unto The Lord A New Song--Just Not That One!' A Case Study Of Music Censorship In Free Will Baptist Colleges, Jon Edward Bullock Jun 2015

'Sing Unto The Lord A New Song--Just Not That One!' A Case Study Of Music Censorship In Free Will Baptist Colleges, Jon Edward Bullock

Masters Theses

Like so many of the world’s other religious institutions, the Christian church has a long and well-documented history of using music to enhance and enliven the spiritual experiences of believers. Many of the church’s greatest champions throughout history have spoken about the inherent power of music, but as history always seems to demonstrate, along with power comes the need for control. As long as church leaders have used music to attain spiritual progress, they have also censored music that threatens to impede that progress. Even today, many church leaders still rely on music censorship to protect the future and identity …

The Invisible And Indeterminable Valueof Ecology: From Malaria Control Toecological Research In The Americansouth, Albert Way

Faculty Articles

This essay tells the story of the Emory University Field Station, a malaria research station in southwest Georgia that operated from 1939 to 1958. Using the tools of environmental history and the history of science, it examines the station’s founding, its fieldwork, and its place within the broader history of malaria control, eradication, and research. A joint effort of Emory University, the U.S. Public Health Service, and the Communicable Disease Center (CDC), this station was closely aligned with a broader movement of ideas about tropical diseases across the globe, but it also offers a case study of how science in …

Advancing Tribal Court Criminal Jurisdiction In Alaska, Ryan Fortson Jun 2015

Advancing Tribal Court Criminal Jurisdiction In Alaska, Ryan Fortson

Alaska Law Review

Extensive case law already exists in Alaska on the jurisdiction of tribal courts over domestic relations cases, with one of the seminal cases—John v. Baker—establishing that Alaska tribes have jurisdiction even in the absence of Indian country. A common assumption, though, is that Alaska tribes do not have jurisdiction over criminal offenses. This Article argues that both under the logic of John v. Baker and the development of Indian law in the Lower 48, Alaska tribes already possess inherent jurisdiction over criminal offenses within their Native villages. With the gamut of social challenges facing Alaska Natives in rural …

Gold Mining And Economic And Social Change In West Africa, Michael Kevane Jun 2015

Gold Mining And Economic And Social Change In West Africa, Michael Kevane

Economics

Economic theory often suggests that social institutions are strongly influenced by specific geographic features of regions. The history of gold mining in West Africa, however, suggests that the relationship between mineral resources and social organization is complex and fluid. First, over the centuries gold mining revenues may have encouraged state formation, but at the same time opportunities for conflict and corruption may have undermined state functioning. Second, while gold extraction and trade required social organization, the interpersonal relationships engendered by gold mining also led to new identities and social institutions. These dialectical considerations illustrate how simple theories of how geography …

Native Subordination Through The Franciscan Institutions During The Sixteenth Century, David M. Perez Jun 2015

Native Subordination Through The Franciscan Institutions During The Sixteenth Century, David M. Perez

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

My thesis, building on over two centuries of scholarly research on colonialism and evangelism in Mexico, seeks to heighten the visibility of the Franciscan order in New Spain. I intend to clearly establish how the Virgin de Guadalupe’s influence on native conversions was mediated through, and controlled by, the Franciscan institutional systems between 1523 and 1572.

Many scholars have argued that the most influential factor in converting the Nahua populations was the apparition of the Virgin de Guadalupe, in 1533. These scholars have argued that at the time of her appearance the conversion of the country had been incomplete, but …

Using Swat To Simulate Crop Yields And Salinity Levels In The North Fork River Basin, Usa, Aaron R. Mittelstet, Daniel E. Storm, Art L. Stoecker Jun 2015

Using Swat To Simulate Crop Yields And Salinity Levels In The North Fork River Basin, Usa, Aaron R. Mittelstet, Daniel E. Storm, Art L. Stoecker

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Crop yields and salinity levels in the North Fork of the Red River (North Fork River) basin, located in southwestern Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle, were analyzed based on the diverse climate in the region. Saline irrigation water is a major problem in the basin. The Elm Fork Creek flows through salt deposits, making the creek and its receiving stream, the North Fork River, too saline to use for irrigation. This greatly reduces the number of hectares that can be utilized for agricultural crops within the basin. A baseline SWAT model was setup, calibrated and validated to simulate streamflow and …

An Exploration Of Higher Education Engagement With Small And Medium Enterprise In Ireland, Irene Sheridan, Margaret Linehan Jun 2015

An Exploration Of Higher Education Engagement With Small And Medium Enterprise In Ireland, Irene Sheridan, Margaret Linehan

Conference Papers

Higher education institutions are increasingly expected to support regional economic development through knowledge generation and exchange in collaboration with enterprise and industry. In many geographies small and medium industries form the backbone of regional economies and present best opportunities for employment and export growth. While it is understood that working with higher education learning and research expertise can contribute to competitiveness and success for small enterprises, the reality is that many enterprises experience barriers to these partnerships (Collier, Grey, & Ahn, 2011). Barriers relating to cultural differences, inaccessibility, resources and funding availabilities have been reported. Dadameah & Costello (2011) report …

Review 3: Sacred Subdivisions: The Postsuburban Transformation Of American Evangelicalism By Justin Wilford, Justin Kh Tse Jun 2015

Review 3: Sacred Subdivisions: The Postsuburban Transformation Of American Evangelicalism By Justin Wilford, Justin Kh Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This review demonstrates that Justin Wilford's central argument that Saddleback Church reframes post-suburban spaces of ennui into purpose-driven ones added precision to the claims of Asian American evangelical activists. On 23 September 2013, Saddleback's senior pastor, Rick Warren, posted a photograph of a Chinese Red Guard on his public Facebook page, captioning it, ‘The attitude of Saddleback staff as they go to work every day.’ When concerned Asian American evangelicals commented on the distastefulness of the photo as it reminded Chinese Americans of the trauma of the Cultural Revolution while exoticizing Asian Americans within American evangelicalism, Warren replied in a …

Finnishness And Colonization In Akseli Gallen-Kallela's Representations Of Africa, Camille Kathryn Richey Jun 2015

Finnishness And Colonization In Akseli Gallen-Kallela's Representations Of Africa, Camille Kathryn Richey

Theses and Dissertations

Akseli Gallen-Kallela is often discussed as the national painter of Finland, as one who helped define Finnishness when Finland was still a colonized area of Russia. However, his trip to Africa from 1909-1911 shows where Gallen-Kallela acts as a pictorial colonizer himself, not only sympathizing with the Africans but representing them through a European cosmopolitan lens, as purer and closer to nature, but still inferior. The assumptions inherent in his representations of Africa reveal that Gallen-Kallela is not only a colonized subject but a colonizer of his own country.

Tethys Platform: A Development And Hosting Platform For Water Resources Web Apps, Nathan R. Swain Jun 2015

Tethys Platform: A Development And Hosting Platform For Water Resources Web Apps, Nathan R. Swain

Theses and Dissertations

The interactive nature of web applications or “web apps” makes it an excellent medium for conveying complex scientific concepts to lay audiences and creating decision support tools that harness cutting edge modeling techniques. However, the technical expertise required to develop them represents a barrier for would-be developers. The barrier can be characterized by the following hurdles that developers must overcome: (1) identify, select, and install software that meet the spatial and computational capabilities commonly required for water resources modeling; (2) orchestrate the use of multiple FOSS and FOSS4G projects and navigate their differing application programming interfaces (APIs); (3) learn the …

Geographically Isolated Wetlands: Rethinking A Misnomer, David M. Mushet, Aram J. K. Calhoun, Laurie C. Alexander, Matthew J. Cohen, Edward S. Dekeyser, Laurie Fowler, Charles R. Lane, Mark C. Rains, Susan C. Walls Jun 2015

Geographically Isolated Wetlands: Rethinking A Misnomer, David M. Mushet, Aram J. K. Calhoun, Laurie C. Alexander, Matthew J. Cohen, Edward S. Dekeyser, Laurie Fowler, Charles R. Lane, Mark C. Rains, Susan C. Walls

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

We explore the category “geographically isolated wetlands” (GIWs; i.e., wetlands completely surrounded by uplands at the local scale) as used in the wetland sciences. As currently used, the GIW category (1) hampers scientific efforts by obscuring important hydrological and ecological differences among multiple wetland functional types, (2) aggregates wetlands in a manner not reflective of regulatory and management information needs, (3) implies wetlands so described are in some way “isolated,” an often incorrect implication, (4) is inconsistent with more broadly used and accepted concepts of “geographic isolation,” and (5) has injected unnecessary confusion into scientific investigations and discussions. Instead, we …

In this presentation, we share findings from a longitudinal study—twenty years and counting—on the role of Arizona in the war and the peace in this highly contested region of Bosnia. Data were/are collected via site observations and retrospective interviews to explore the emergence of entrepreneurship in Brčko, Bosnia before, during and after the war. A synthesis and assessment of findings led to the exploration of the ways that the terms of Dayton and the implementation of Dayton by NATO IFOR, Task Force Eagle, 1st Armored Division (November and December 1995) and 1st Infantry Division (1996-2004), US Army, contributed to the …

In Search Of Ordenamiento Ambiental Territorial In The Peasant Reserve Zones Of Colombia, Manuela Ruiz Reyes Jun 2015

In Search Of Ordenamiento Ambiental Territorial In The Peasant Reserve Zones Of Colombia, Manuela Ruiz Reyes

Dissertations - ALL

This thesis is an intersection between political ecology, rural development and agrarian studies. It examines the Peasant Reserve Zone (ZRC) as a land planning designation in Colombia created in the 1990s as part of the Colombian state’s effort at agrarian reform, and the expressions of Ordenamiento Ambiental Territorial (glossed as environmental land use planning), by the state and the peasants as ways of constructing territory. Beginning by situating the emergence of the ZRC as part of the classic agrarian question of the fate of the peasantry in capitalism, it then intersects that political-economy perspective with a geographic approach to the …

Global Leadership Effectiveness: The Predictive Value Of Cognitively Oriented Competencies, Silma E. Lange Jun 2015

Global Leadership Effectiveness: The Predictive Value Of Cognitively Oriented Competencies, Silma E. Lange

Master's Theses

Global leadership is becoming increasingly important in multinational companies as well as in non-profit and public sectors. The purpose of this study was to investigate what makes a global leader effective, by identifying key predictors of global leadership effectiveness. The predictors investigated in this study included a combined measure of overall intercultural global leadership competency and selected cognitively oriented competencies: nonjudgmentalness, inquisitiveness, tolerance of ambiguity and cosmopolitanism. The sample consisted of 171 undergraduate and graduate students from a large university. Linear and multiple regression analyses were conducted to identify the ability of the competencies to predict effectiveness. Inquisitiveness was the …

Reviving Mesopotamia: Genocide And The Preservation Of Cultural Heritage In The Nationalist Music Of William Daniel (1903-1988), Rashel Pakbaz Jun 2015

Reviving Mesopotamia: Genocide And The Preservation Of Cultural Heritage In The Nationalist Music Of William Daniel (1903-1988), Rashel Pakbaz

Master's Theses

Once an illiterate Christian community suppressed by its Muslim neighbors, the Mesopotamian population in Persia benefitted from the American missionaries establishing schools and hospitals that helped their culture and language flourish in the late 1800s. Their survival as a people and a culture was threatened, however, when the Muslim Ottoman Empire began the Christian Genocide in Eastern Anatolia during World War I. As a survivor of these horrific events, composer William Daniel (1903-1988) felt the need to preserve and promote Mesopotamian culture through music, and as a Western trained musician, he successfully developed a nationalist style of music based on …

Drilling For Black Gold: The Demarcation For Hydrocarbon Resources In The Caspian Sea, Ziyad Ziyadzade Jun 2015

Drilling For Black Gold: The Demarcation For Hydrocarbon Resources In The Caspian Sea, Ziyad Ziyadzade

Chicago Journal of International Law

This Comment examines the division of oil and natural gas reserves in the Caspian Sea through the legal prism supplied by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses. So far, the academic literature concerned with equitable apportionment of the Caspian's hydrocarbon resources has attempted to tackle this issue through two generally accepted legal regimes. The first, commonly identified as the Law of the Sea, classifies the Caspian as a “sea” and divides the resources therein according to a strict, treaty-based framework, which produces an outcome disadvantageous to some of the littoral states. The …
