Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilizer Rates And Two-Spotted Spider Mite Incidence On 'Strawberry Festival' Strawberry Cultivar Performance, Megan E. Mcgovern Jul 2015

Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilizer Rates And Two-Spotted Spider Mite Incidence On 'Strawberry Festival' Strawberry Cultivar Performance, Megan E. Mcgovern

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The decline in strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) production in Arkansas over the last 50 years has sparked an interest in the use of season extension techniques to improve yield and fruit quality. High tunnel strawberry production has the potential to become a profitable and sustainable production system; however, information on nutrient and pest management is limited.

The overall objective of this study was to determine the response of ‘St. Festival’ strawberry cultivar to different nitrogen fertilizer rates in order to develop a fertilization program for strawberries grown under high tunnel production systems. Experiments were conducted at the University of …

This report details the findings from surveys of Gouldian finches during their annual breeding season (2015).

Multiscale Predictive Modeling Of Wave Velocity And Its Distribution Across A Rocky Intertidal Landscape, Daniel Orr Jul 2015

Multiscale Predictive Modeling Of Wave Velocity And Its Distribution Across A Rocky Intertidal Landscape, Daniel Orr

SNS Master's Theses

Much importance has been placed on understanding and quantifying how diversity, community structure and mechanistic processes change over different scales. There is a need in ecology for multiscale approaches quantitatively linking scales to characterize, quantify and better understand how ecological patterns and processes functioning at different scales interact. Many of the structural mechanisms established in rocky intertidal systems are driven or influenced by larger scale oceanographic processes that scale down to sub-meter scale effects. Here I develop and integrate two models that link these two scales. Velocity was measured in a swath along shore using an array of dynamometers. Intertidal …

Factors Influencing Canopy Invertebrates In Britain, Kate Harvey Jul 2015

Factors Influencing Canopy Invertebrates In Britain, Kate Harvey

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Canopy research is becoming increasingly important as the extent of woodland habitats decreases and becomes more fragmented. Invertebrates are a diverse group of canopy fauna which are commonly used as bio-indicators to assess the health of woodland. However, current knowledge and understanding of invertebrate abundance and diversity in temperate forest canopies is limited and usually based on individual preliminary studies. In this study, data from six individual studies across eight locations, two in Scotland and six in the south-west of England were analysed to determine differences between tree species: oak (Quercus robur), scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and beech (Fagus sylvatica); …

The Chinese People's Liberation Army In 2025, Roy Kamphausen Mr., David Lai Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

This volume is of special relevance in light of the profound changes occurring within the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). China’s desire to develop a military commensurate with its diverse interests is both legitimate and understandable. The challenge for U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM) is to understand how China will employ this growing military capability in support of its interests. The book addresses the uncertainty surrounding the potential direction of the PLA by examining three distinct focus areas: domestic, external, and technological drivers of PLA modernization; alternative futures for the PLA; and, implications for the region, world, and U.S.-China relations. The …

Path Dependence In Intrastate Conflicts: Resources, Regimes, And Interventions, Ivan Medynskyi Jul 2015

Path Dependence In Intrastate Conflicts: Resources, Regimes, And Interventions, Ivan Medynskyi

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the patterns of path dependence in intrastate conflicts. It is motivated by three research questions: What factors determine a particular outcome of a civil war? How strong is their impact? What are the causal mechanisms in play? To examine these questions, this study introduces a theory of path dependence to the study of intrastate conflicts that bridges the gap between analyses of the phases of contention.

First, it examines the broad understanding of path dependence that highlights the impact of initial conditions on civil war outcomes. Then, this dissertation explores the narrower notion which focuses on the …

China's Rise And Reconfiguration Of Central Asia's Geopolitics: A Case For U.S. "Pivot" To Eurasia, Roman Muzalevsky Mr. Jul 2015

China's Rise And Reconfiguration Of Central Asia's Geopolitics: A Case For U.S. "Pivot" To Eurasia, Roman Muzalevsky Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

China’s global rise has prompted numerous discussions and studies of this historically monumental phenomenon and its implications for the world. On the one hand, China’s emergence as a global player has generated a lot of optimism for global development and economic convergence. On the other, it has spurred concerns about possible collisions on the world stage as existing and emerging powers seek to retain and redesign their roles and influences. Related opportunities and fears have been especially pronounced in countries neighboring China, including in Central Asia where the newly independent and post-Soviet republics face a possibility of yet another imperial …

Toward A Spatial-Temporal Measure Of Land-Use Mix, Steven R. Gehrke, Kelly Clifton Jul 2015

Toward A Spatial-Temporal Measure Of Land-Use Mix, Steven R. Gehrke, Kelly Clifton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Urban planning and public-health research has long been interested in the connection between land-use mix and travel. Interest from urban planners stems from the potential of transportation efficiency gains achieved by an increased land-use mix and subsequent shortening of trip lengths; whereas, public-health research advocates an increased land-use mix as an effective policy for facilitating greater physical activity. Yet, despite the transportation, land-use, and health benefits related to improving land-use mix and the extent of topical attention given by researchers, no consensus has been reached regarding the magnitude of its effect on travel. This absence of agreement may largely be …

The Art Of Reading Changes: A New Approach To Geographical Landscape, Edwige Motte

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

This paper aims to present one aspect of the possible relations between art and science. It does not encompass the whole epistemic range of this relation but focuses on a precise domain: landscape representations (paintings or old photos) and landscape evolution. This produces and intersection between one science (geography) and one domain of arts (plastic arts). More precisely, it deals with scientific field work and artistic field work: which scientific data useful for a scientific geography may be extracted from a painting or a photo which was drawn / taken in the field and which bears all the …

The response explains the basic principles of First Amendment cosmopolitanism and highlights the importance of the First Amendment’s transborder dimension. It also responds to skeptical and critical reactions to some of the book’s arguments. Finally, the response elaborates on First Amendment cosmopolitanism’s relationship to democratic values.

Identity And Identification: The Individual In The Time Of Networked Governance, Nishant Shah Jul 2015

Identity And Identification: The Individual In The Time Of Networked Governance, Nishant Shah

Socio-Legal Review

The rise of digital technologies has foregrounded the individual as the unit of network and database governance. The focus on the quantified self and data subjects has resulted in an increased attention on the rights, responsibilities, and safeguards to protect the individual at the centre of data mining and regulation practices. There is an increased anxiety about how the existing safeguards and policies are inadequate to both activate and to protect the individual in the face of ubiquitous and pervasive computational practices. This paper argues that attempts at trying to extend the fold of existing policies and frameworks are inadequate …

Effects Of Management Practices On Grassland Plant And Bird Community Composition In Kane County Forest Preserves, Colleen R. Zumpf Jul 2015

Effects Of Management Practices On Grassland Plant And Bird Community Composition In Kane County Forest Preserves, Colleen R. Zumpf

All Student Theses and Dissertations

Loss of grassland ecosystems over the past century has increased importance of efforts to improve and restore habitat for native plant species and the biotic communities they support. As a result of these efforts, biotic and abiotic conditions and interactions with the environment are altered. Species evolution based on these particular environmental conditions has caused many species to be mapped onto various environmental gradients which can be defined as niche separation. This study attempted to determine what environmental gradients had the strongest impact upon grassland bird and plant species niche separation, particularly those gradients defined by management activities such as …

Ubiquitous Place Names; Standardization And Study In Indonesia, Allan F. Lauder, Multamia R.M.T. Lauder Jul 2015

Ubiquitous Place Names; Standardization And Study In Indonesia, Allan F. Lauder, Multamia R.M.T. Lauder

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Place names play a vital role in human society. Names exist in all languages and place names are an indispensible part of international communication. This has been acknowledged by the establishment of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN). One of UNGEGN's tasks is to coordinate international efforts on the proper use of place names. Indonesia supports this effort and through its National Geospatial Agency (BIG). Place names are also of interest as an object of study in themselves. Academic studies into place names are found in linguistics, onomastics, philosophy and a number of other academic disciplines. …

Indications Of Ancient Maya Soil Resource Management In Northern Belize, Austin Michael Ulmer Jul 2015

Indications Of Ancient Maya Soil Resource Management In Northern Belize, Austin Michael Ulmer

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to use soil chemical properties, particularly carbon isotopes to describe the agricultural landscape in the Blue Creek region on the Rio Bravo Escarpment in northwestern Belize. The primary question associated with this study focused on the comparative agricultural potential of the soils between the upland karst environment and the lowland coastal plains using the distribution and frequency of ancient Maya maize production. Soil physical features, such as clay concentrations throughout profiles in conjunction with soil chemical properties were used to aid in determining the level of ancient maize production. Isotopic evidence suggests that anciently, …

Economic Literacy: Measuring The Economic Human Capital Of Arkansas K-12 Teachers, June Marie Freund Jul 2015

Economic Literacy: Measuring The Economic Human Capital Of Arkansas K-12 Teachers, June Marie Freund

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Economic literacy is recognized as a deficit quality in the United States, no more prevalent than during the last great recession. It is paramount the K-12 educational system lead the movement to educate the public on economic content and issues, as it is the one institution that has direct contact with all citizens. The question then must be asked, how economic literate are teachers entrusted with the responsibility of imparting economic knowledge to his/her K-12 grade level student. A sample of Arkansas teachers at each grade level K – 12 were tested using national normed economic literacy tests designed to …

Lidar And Machine Learning Estimation Of Hardwood Forest Biomass In Mountainous And Bottomland Environments, Bowei Xue

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Light detection and ranging (lidar) has been applied in various forest applications, such as to retrieve forest structural information, to build statistical models for identification of tree species, and to monitor forest growth. However, despite significant progress in these areas, the choice of regression approach and parameter tuning remains an ongoing critical question. This study focused on choosing the right spatial generalization level to transform lidar point clouds to 2D images which can be further processed by mature image processing and pattern recognition approaches. It also compared the prediction ability of popular machine learning algorithms applied to aboveground forest biomass …
