The Effects Of Petroleum Pollutants On Sea Urchins Reproduction And Development, Kellie C. Pelikan Dec 2015

The Effects Of Petroleum Pollutants On Sea Urchins Reproduction And Development, Kellie C. Pelikan

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Disturbances, such as mass pollution events, threaten the health of vulnerable ecosystems. Recent media attention has focused on the devastating mass oil spills, but daily petroleum input from recreational and commercial ship bilge release has been overlooked. The focus of this study was the effect of petroleum products found in bilge water on fertilization success and larval viability of two sea urchin species, Lytechinus variegatus and Eucidaris tribuloides. Unlike other pollutant studies that have focused on sperm characteristics and concentrations, I chose to examine how egg integrity was compromised by petroleum products. Scanning electron microscopy revealed eggs were degraded when …

No Reef Is An Island: Integrating Coral Reef Connectivity Data Into The Design Of Regional-Scale Marine Protected Area Networks, Steven R. Schill, George T. Raber, Jason J. Roberts, Eric A. Treml, Jorge Brenner, Patrick N. Halpin Dec 2015

No Reef Is An Island: Integrating Coral Reef Connectivity Data Into The Design Of Regional-Scale Marine Protected Area Networks, Steven R. Schill, George T. Raber, Jason J. Roberts, Eric A. Treml, Jorge Brenner, Patrick N. Halpin

Faculty Publications

We integrated coral reef connectivity data for the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico into a conservation decision-making framework for designing a regional scale marine protected area (MPA) network that provides insight into ecological and political contexts. We used an ocean circulation model and regional coral reef data to simulate eight spawning events from 2008–2011, applying a maximum 30-day pelagic larval duration and 20% mortality rate. Coral larval dispersal patterns were analyzed between coral reefs across jurisdictional marine zones to identify spatial relationships between larval sources and destinations within countries and territories across the region. We applied our results in Marxan, …

Systematic Literature Review Of The Use Of Rich Media In Stem And Related Education, Tony A. Lowe Dec 2015

Systematic Literature Review Of The Use Of Rich Media In Stem And Related Education, Tony A. Lowe

School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series

The use of video in pedagogy is well established in the modern classroom with researched understanding of its benefits. Prior literature reviews provide a foundation for the impacts within a wide scope of environments and subjects. These reviews primarily have looked at students and faculty attitudes, learning outcomes, and the impact on attendance. The impact has been spread over general subject matter with little focus on the often challenging topics of STEM education. Many topics in STEM education are highly procedural, such as mathematical proofs or writing code or conducting experiments. Understanding the costs and benefits of using video to …

How Do Changes To The Railroad Causeway In Utah’S Great Salt Lake Affect Water And Salt Flow?, James S. White, Sarah E. Null, David G. Tarboton Dec 2015

How Do Changes To The Railroad Causeway In Utah’S Great Salt Lake Affect Water And Salt Flow?, James S. White, Sarah E. Null, David G. Tarboton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Managing terminal lake elevation and salinity are emerging problems worldwide. We contribute to terminal lake management research by quantitatively assessing water and salt flow for Utah’s Great Salt Lake. In 1959, Union Pacific Railroad constructed a rock-filled causeway across the Great Salt Lake, separating the lake into a north and south arm. Flow between the two arms was limited to two 4.6 meter wide rectangular culverts installed during construction, an 88 meter opening (referred to locally as a breach) installed in 1984, and the semi porous material of the causeway. A salinity gradient developed between the two arms of the …

Foreign Policy Rhetoric In The 1992 Presidential Campaign: Bill Clinton’S Exceptionalist Jeremiad, Jason A. Edwards Dec 2015

Foreign Policy Rhetoric In The 1992 Presidential Campaign: Bill Clinton’S Exceptionalist Jeremiad, Jason A. Edwards

Speaker & Gavel

This essay examines presidential candidate Bill Clinton’s rhetoric regarding America’s role in the world during the 1992 presidential campaign. Despite the fact that foreign policy was George H.W. Bush’s strength during the campaign, candidate Clinton was able to develop a coherent vision for America’s role in the world that he carried into his presidency. I argue he did so by fusing together the American exceptionalist missions of exemplar and intervention. In doing so, Clinton altered a tension embedded in debates over U.S. foreign policy rhetoric. To further differentiate his candidacy from President Bush, Clinton encased this discourse within a secular …

Dynamic Data Management In A Data Grid Environment, Björn Barrefors Dec 2015

Dynamic Data Management In A Data Grid Environment, Björn Barrefors

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A data grid is a geographically distributed set of resources providing a facility for computationally intensive analysis of large datasets to a large number of geographically distributed users. In the scientific community, data grids have become increasingly popular as scientific research is driven by large datasets. Until recently, developments in data management for data grids have focused on management of data at lower layers in the data grid architecture. With dataset sizes expected to approach exabyte scale in coming years, data management in data grids are facing a new set of challenges. In particularly, the problem of automatically placing and …

Haunted By History: Specters Of The Past In Literature Of The Global South, April Kathleen Lenoir Dec 2015

Haunted By History: Specters Of The Past In Literature Of The Global South, April Kathleen Lenoir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This project argues that the shared history of slavery, imperialism, and the plantation manifests in 20th Century literature from both the Caribbean and the Southern United States as a haunting and ghostly presence. I utilize both canonical and less well-known authors, with a particular focus on female authors. Authors from both regions write stories of people and places haunted by history as a way to confront the ghosts of slavery and the plantation to allow them a future free of ghosts. Overall I bring together texts that have not been previously read together to show connections between literature of the …

The Impoverished Island: Development Intervention In Madagascar, Taylor Eubanks Dec 2015

The Impoverished Island: Development Intervention In Madagascar, Taylor Eubanks

The Catalyst

Madagascar, an island nation in Africa, is mired in poverty; approximately 76.5% of its population lives below the national poverty line of less than $1 per day. Instances of extreme poverty cannot be explained by single dimension, clearly delineated, universally applicable causes and solutions; rather, extreme poverty must be analyzed as a multi-dimensional phenomenon created and perpetuated by conditions specific to individual societies and communities. To speak broadly of poverty and its causes fails to provide an accurate depiction of why a country is poor. The extreme impoverishment found in Madagascar is the result of cumulative conditions specific to the …

New Study The South Essay By David Wharton, Admin

In a cultural climate based on the superficial, one has to wonder how much deeper the annual Elvis Death Day observances go than mere tradition and habit. Can such events be mined for anything worth knowing about the world we live in today? Was there more to be learned from Death Day ten years ago? Twenty years ago? Thirty? Those might be the most interesting questions of all to ask about what happens in Memphis on August 15.

Nahua Perspectives On Natural Resources, Labor, And Social Well-Being, Alejandra P. Navarro-Benbow Dec 2015

Nahua Perspectives On Natural Resources, Labor, And Social Well-Being, Alejandra P. Navarro-Benbow

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation analyses how indigenous communities from the Tlaxcala and Chalco regions of central Mexico responded to the exploitation of their knowledge, natural resources, and labor in the sixteenth century. In proposing social models that focused on natural resources and specialized labor, the Nahua directly influenced colonial economic policy and promoted a more ecologically sustainable model of colonization.

In developing strategies for incorporating the indigenous populations into the colonial society of New Spain, the Spanish monarchy relied on agriculture, mechanical arts, and commerce. This reliance led to the exploitation of resources, the adaptation of local industries and transatlantic commerce, as …

Standardised Testing In Compulsory Schooling In England And Denmark: A Comparative Study And Analysis, K Andreasen, P Kelly, K Kousholt, E Mcness, C Ydesen

Plymouth Institute of Education

Within education, national testing is flourishing and, considering the important role which assessment plays in the production and reproduction of culture, it is important to examine further the possible impact of such practice. While England has a long tradition of national educational testing, Denmark, in contrast, has only recently introduced such tests. Thus the two countries present excellent cases for comparison and analysis in order to gain knowledge about the possible consequences of such testing schemes on pedagogy and the content of the school curriculum, as well as the impact they may have on pupils' perceptions of their potential academic …

Refugees, Migrants, And Terrorists: German National Identity And The Social Construction Of Vietnamese And Mediterranean Boat People, Yves Mai Orsino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Since the eruption of the Mediterranean crisis, European states have taken a tougher stance on admitting refugees and asylum seekers despite the fact that Europe is the original architect of the international humanitarian regime. This shift from a historically Open Europe to the Fortress Europe is particularly pronounced in Germany. Accordingly, this thesis explores why Germany has suggested more restrictive policies toward the Mediterranean refugees today when it had responded generously during the Indochinese crisis. I argue that Germany's differential responses to the Indochinese and Mediterranean refugee crises reflect its construction of the foreign groups as either assets or liabilities …

Answer To The Portuguese Crisis: Turning Vacant Land Into Urban Agriculture, Cecilia Delgado Dec 2015

Answer To The Portuguese Crisis: Turning Vacant Land Into Urban Agriculture, Cecilia Delgado

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

The increase in demand for spaces for agricultural production during times of crisis is well recognised (Cities, Poverty and Food, 2010) and this phenomenon can be verified in Portugal. This paper focuses on the access to urban land for agriculture and the need to revisit Land Use Planning to become a facilitating tool for long-term consolidation of UPA.

This paper is an original essay drawing lessons from two paradigmatic Urban and Peri – Urban Agriculture [UPA] Portuguese experiences. They are relevant examples of UPA as a response to the economic crisis, by their expansion through time (more than 10 years), …

Object-Based Crop Classification With Landsat-Modis Enhanced Time-Series Data, Qingting Li, Cuizhen Wang, Bing Zhang, Linlin Lu

Faculty Publications

Cropland mapping via remote sensing can provide crucial information for agri-ecological studies. Time series of remote sensing imagery is particularly useful for agricultural land classification. This study investigated the synergistic use of feature selection, Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) segmentation and decision tree classification for cropland mapping using a finer temporal-resolution Landsat-MODIS Enhanced time series in 2007. The enhanced time series extracted 26 layers of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and five NDVI Time Series Indices (TSI) in a subset of agricultural land of Southwest Missouri. A feature selection procedure using the Stepwise Discriminant Analysis (SDA) was performed, and 10 optimal …

Advances In Autonomous-Underwater-Vehicle Based Passive Bottom-Loss Estimation By Processing Of Marine Ambient Noise, Lanfranco Muzi Dec 2015

Advances In Autonomous-Underwater-Vehicle Based Passive Bottom-Loss Estimation By Processing Of Marine Ambient Noise, Lanfranco Muzi

Dissertations and Theses

Accurate modeling of acoustic propagation in the ocean waveguide is important to SONAR-performance prediction, and requires, particularly in shallow water environments, characterizing the bottom reflection loss with a precision that databank-based modeling cannot achieve. Recent advances in the technology of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) make it possible to envision a survey system for seabed characterization composed of a short array mounted on a small AUV. The bottom power reflection coefficient (and the related reflection loss) can be estimated passively by beamforming the naturally occurring marine ambient-noise acoustic field recorded by a vertical line array of hydrophones. However, the reduced array …

Geographies Of Inequality: Urban Renewal And The Race, Gender, And Class Of Post-Katrina New Orleans, Shiloh L. Deitz, Kristen M. Barber

Articles

In this paper, we address pressing questions on the perpetuation of race, gender, and class inequalities in ongoing restoration practices shaping the "New" New Orleans. We unpack federal and local efforts to rebuild and revitalize the city over the last ten years and map the geography of New Orleans at the neighborhood level both before and after the storm. We discuss how mismanaged resources, corrupt profit-taking, conflicts of interest for the stakeholders, and socially unconscious design conditioned a fiscally irresponsible and non-inclusive recovery. These efforts have pushed out already marginalized populations, resulted in the gentrification of historically African American neighborhoods, …
