Geoheritage, A National Inventory In France, P De Wever, Kn Page, I Alterio, G Egoroff, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Good protection measures for geological heritage should begin with an inventory of geosites. In France, for example, a law enacted in 2002 grants formal recognition to the notion of geological heritage. An inventory and evaluation were then established on a region-by-region basis. By April 2007, the French Ministry of Environment launched the inventory programme for the nation’s geological heritage and the data are now being collected at a regional scale. The data are being gathered and homogenised, and then transferred to the French National Museum of Natural History for examination. The ratified site data are stored and available for public …
The Present Antitrust Jungle, G. William Trivoli
The Present Antitrust Jungle, G. William Trivoli
Akron Law Review
First, a brief review of the historical framework of antitrust is presented to gain some perspective of the present problems. Second, there is a brief review of the legal and economic concepts of monopoly. Next, there is a brief discussion of two important unresolved issues of antitrust, conglomerate mergers and economic concentration. Finally, several recommendations are made for changes and improvements in antitrust to make it more effective and less cumbersome.
Coal Mining And The Resource Curse In The Eastern United States, Stratford Douglas, Anne Walker
Coal Mining And The Resource Curse In The Eastern United States, Stratford Douglas, Anne Walker
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
We measure the effect of coal resource sector dependence on long run income growth using the natural experiment of coal mining in 409 U.S. counties that are selected for homogeneity. Using a panel data set (1970-2010), we find a one standard deviation increase in resource dependence is associated with an estimated 0.6 percentage point drop in annual growth rates of per capita personal income. We also measure the extent to which the resource curse operates through disincentives to education, and find significant effects, but results indicate that this education channel explains only perhaps 25% of the curse.
Gods Of The City? Reflecting On City Building Games As An Early Introduction To Urban Systems, Bradley Bereitschaft
Gods Of The City? Reflecting On City Building Games As An Early Introduction To Urban Systems, Bradley Bereitschaft
Geography and Geology Faculty Publications
For millions of gamers and students alike, city building games (CBGs) like SimCity and the more recent Cities: Skylines present a compelling initial introduction to the world of urban planning and development. As such, these games have great potential to shape players’ understanding and expectations of real urban patterns and processes. In this article I argue that, despite the fundamental role of agency in CBGs and other sandbox type games, players are constrained by the developers’ assumptions and biases regarding how cities ought to look and function. Of particular consideration is the tendency among CBGs to emphasize personal transportation over …

Hmong Culture Club As A Place Of Belonging: The Cultivation Of Hmong Students’ Cultural And Political Identities, Bic Ngo
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
In this article, I draw on a year-long ethnographic study of an after school “Hmong Culture Club” to illuminate the ways in which it provides students with a place of belonging. I reveal the ways in which Hmong students in this setting take up ideologies of multiculturalism in response to a sense of the “loss” of Hmong culture. I explore the ways in which the Hmong Club provided Hmong students with a place to belong that simultaneously cultivated their cultural and political identities. Ultimately, I suggest that school extracurricular cultural clubs may provide insights to subtractive schooling (Valenzuela, 1999) as …
A History And Analysis Of The Efforts Of The Ahtna People Of South-Central Alaska To Secure A Priority To Hunt Moose On Their Ancestral Lands, Eric Schacht
Natural Resources
The purpose of this study is to document the decades-long struggle of the Ahtna people of south-central Alaska to secure the priority to hunt moose in their ancestral lands. The study details the changes in moose hunting regulations in Game Management Unit 13 from the first permit hunt in 1960 to the current era as well as the changes in the number of hunters, number of moose harvests, and success of hunters by area of residence (local vs. non-local). This study summarizes changes in regulations regarding rural preference for subsistence hunters and the court cases challenging those provisions. It outlines …
Fatty Acid Profiles Of Alaskan Arctic Forage Fishes: Evidence Of Regional And Temporal Variation, Julia Dissen
Fatty Acid Profiles Of Alaskan Arctic Forage Fishes: Evidence Of Regional And Temporal Variation, Julia Dissen
Marine Biology
Fatty acids, the main components of lipids, are crucial for energy storage and other physiological functions in animals and plants. Dietary fatty acids are incorporated and conserved in consumer tissues in predictable patterns and can be analyzed in animal tissues to determine the composition of an individual's diet. This study measured the variation in fatty acid profiles of three abundant Arctic forage fish species, Arctic Cod (Boreogadus saida), Canadian Eelpout (Lycodes polaris), and Longear Eelpout (Lycodes seminudus) across multiple years (2010-2013) and geographic locations (Beaufort and Chukchi seas). These fishes are important prey items of marine mammals, sea birds, and …

United States Security Alliances In The Asian Pacific: A Pivot From Bi-Lateral To Multi-Lateral In The 21st Century, Kevin M. Evringham
Doctoral Dissertations
The United States maintains several military alliances with states in the Asian Pacific in support of national defense and stable regional security. In the post-Cold War period the region has witnessed a significant rise in interstate disputes as China attempts to expand its regional influence utilizing the states larger, ever more modern military. This research examines the existing regional military alliances of the United States to determine if alternations should be made in the context of a rising and belligerent China. Utilizing an analysis of each allied states military capabilities, spending on defense, and public support for United States regional …
The Treatment Of Rib Fractures With Thoracic Epidural Analgesia, Courtney D. Jensen
The Treatment Of Rib Fractures With Thoracic Epidural Analgesia, Courtney D. Jensen
Doctoral Dissertations
Rib fractures are detected in nearly 300,000 patients admitted to U.S. trauma centers each year. Among these patients, a mortality rate of about 10% can be expected. It is often pain, rather than structural damage, that precipitates the high risk of mortality. Focusing rib fracture care on effective pain management improves treatment outcomes. The purpose of this investigation was to explore the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of one mode of pain management - thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) - in the treatment of patients with rib fractures. Methods: Four years of patient records were obtained from a Level II trauma center in …
The Common Good: Salmon Science, The Conservation Crisis, And The Shaping Of Alaskan Political Culture, Matthew J. Robinson
The Common Good: Salmon Science, The Conservation Crisis, And The Shaping Of Alaskan Political Culture, Matthew J. Robinson
Arctic and Northern Studies
Without a doubt, the salmon fishery in Alaska has been at the forefront of natural resource debates and has served as an example of ineffective, misunderstood, and controversial policies, as well as many missed opportunities to better understand the resource. Management of Alaska's longest lasting natural resource industry is contingent upon an evolving scientific understanding of salmon. At the same time, policy has been shaped by political, economic, cultural, and social phenomena. Considering these parts of the historical narrative of the Alaska salmon industry demonstrates the fundamental challenges of fisheries management: reconciling biological limitation, economic demands, and cultural practices. This …
Bounty In The Bering Strait: A Case For Proactive Regulation In The World's Next Chokepoint, Emily Clarke Russell
Bounty In The Bering Strait: A Case For Proactive Regulation In The World's Next Chokepoint, Emily Clarke Russell
Arctic and Northern Studies
This thesis analyzes trends in waterborne trade throughout history to demonstrate that the Bering Strait will soon become a chokepoint of international trade. Scientific studies suggest that the accelerating effects of global warming in the Arctic will result in ice-free routes in the coming decades. Given the likelihood that vessel traffic through the Bering Strait will rise, this thesis assesses the region's ecological vulnerability, along with its significant commercial and cultural values. The history of shipping regulation worldwide and commercial regulation in the Bering Sea reveals a tendency to enact regulation in response to a major oil spill or species …
Confronting 'Kymlicka's Dilemma': Settler Voting Rights, Indigenous Representation And The 1998-99 Electoral Reapportionment In Canada's Northwest Territories, Aaron Spitzer
Arctic and Northern Studies
"Settler colonialism" presents a vexing challenge to voting rights theory and praxis in liberal-democratic states. I call this challenge "Kymlicka's dilemma," after Will Kymlicka, the political theorist who has led contemporary discourse on "minority nation" rights. As Kymlicka observed, members of a state's dominant cultural nation, or staatsvolk, may, by exercising universal mobility rights, numerically "swamp," and then, by using universal voting rights, democratically dominate, an Indigenous minority nation in its homeland. To prevent this, an Indigenous minority nation may seek to exercise group-based voting protections, such as guaranteed representation. Where "Kymlicka's dilemma" arises - i.e., where minority group-differentiated voting …

Consistencies And Inconsistencies Between Teachers’ Beliefs And Practices, Mohammad Tamimy
Consistencies And Inconsistencies Between Teachers’ Beliefs And Practices, Mohammad Tamimy
The Qualitative Report
This instrumental-comparative qualitative case study attempts to investigate the relations between teachers’ beliefs and classroom practices. For this purpose, five Iranian EFL teachers from three private language institutes were interviewed for their beliefs. Then, their classroom practices were observed and videotaped. The data were analyzed using the constant comparative method around common categories, which were identified as distinctive features of teachers’ beliefs; these same themes were then compared with their practices. The data for each case were also compared with the others so that possible causes of the inconsistencies could be traced. Based on the causes, some suggestions for teacher …
Effects Of Harvest On Wolf Social Structure, Population Dynamics, And Viewing Opportunities In National Parks, Bridget Borg
Effects Of Harvest On Wolf Social Structure, Population Dynamics, And Viewing Opportunities In National Parks, Bridget Borg
Biological Sciences
Management of gray wolves (Canis lupus) in and adjacent to Denali National Park and Preserve (DNPP) is complex. Wolves that live primarily within the park, where they are protected from harvest, often range across the boundary of the park where harvest of wolves is legal. Protection of wolves within the park provides for wolf viewing opportunities along the Denali Park Road for tens of thousands of visitors annually. Additionally, there is interest in maintaining wolf harvest opportunities adjacent to the park. The objectives for wolf viewing and harvest have been perceived as in direct conflict, but quantitative analysis of the …
Coupling The Effects Of Dissolved Organic Matter And Nutrient Stoichiometry With Nutrient Uptake In Boreal Forest Headwater Streams, Dana Fjare
Biological Sciences
Discontinuous permafrost affects the hydrology and distribution of vegetation in boreal forest watersheds, which in turn influence stream water chemistry. I investigated how loss of discontinuous permafrost with projected climate change might affect nutrient cycling in boreal forest headwater streams. I hypothesized that 1) the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus (C:N:P) ratio in dissolved organic matter (DOM) affects nutrient uptake due to stoichiometric constraints on autotrophic and heterotrophic nutrient assimilation, and 2) labile DOM affects nutrient uptake by increasing heterotrophic production. I tested my hypotheses using a series of instantaneous nutrient additions in nine headwater streams, with a factorial design manipulating …

Federalism As A Constitutional Principle, Ernest Young
Federalism As A Constitutional Principle, Ernest Young
University of Cincinnati Law Review
Justice O’Connor rightly called federalism “our oldest question of constitutional law.”1 But the constitutional balance between the nation and the states is hardly what the cool kids are talking about these days. My first-year con law students show up each Fall expecting to learn about same-sex marriage, flag burning, and abortion; they’re plainly disappointed when they pick up the syllabus and see how much of the course is going to be about government structure.
The first part of my talk resists that intuition. The notion that federalism is passé is so tragically wrongheaded that I can’t bear to leave it …
The Geometric Algorithm Of Inverse And Direct Problems With An Area Solution For The Great Elliptic Arcs, Wei-Kuo Tseng, Jiunn-Liang Guo, Chung-Ping Liu
The Geometric Algorithm Of Inverse And Direct Problems With An Area Solution For The Great Elliptic Arcs, Wei-Kuo Tseng, Jiunn-Liang Guo, Chung-Ping Liu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The definition of the connecting edge(s) between two vertices in a geography type is the great elliptic minor arc in Microsoft SQL Server’s Geography Type. Similar to the way an edge is defined by Microsoft SQL Server, an edge in Geodyssey’s Hipparchus library is also defined as a great circle arc on a reference sphere. Using Hipparchus for their computations, IBM’s DB2 Geodetic Extender and Informix Geodetic Datablade share this definition. Compact formulae are given for the great elliptic sailing on a spheroid providing solutions to both the forward and inverse problems with exceptional accuracy, and latitude in terms of …

Describing Landscape Structure Improvement According To Experimental Results, Fu-Ming Chang, Ning-Chien Tung
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study investigated silt movement and the influence of fine sand on downstream ecology during movement by using a small indoor physical model for simulating onsite conditions. The obtained data were analyzed to determine the impact of silt on ecological habitats and can serve as a reference for future onsite and ecology investigations. Before a dam was removed to allow a downstream riverway to restore the initial environment, the riverway stabilized at approximately 960 s, and the dam was removed at approximately 1140 s. After the dam was removed, the silt in each channel section evidently increased, and after a …
Β-Lactamase Gene Exchange Within The Enterobacteriaceae, Mitchell William Pesesky
Β-Lactamase Gene Exchange Within The Enterobacteriaceae, Mitchell William Pesesky
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Antibiotic resistance represents a grave threat to modern medicine’s control over infectious disease. Pathogens of the Enterobacteriaceae have proven particularly problematic as they can cause a wide variety of infections, and they can be, in some cases, resistant to all antibiotics recommended for use against them. A major part of the threat posed by the Enterobacteriaceae is their ability to exchange resistance genes by horizontal gene transfer (HGT). HGT has allowed some Enterobacteriaceae to quickly accumulate resistance against diverse antibiotics, and then to spread their resistance gene collection to other pathogenic strains. I explore three aspects of how HGT has …

A Parsimonious Two-Way Shooting Algorithm For Connected Automated Traffic Smoothing, Fang Zhou
Theses and Dissertations
Advanced connected and automated vehicle technologies offer new opportunities for highway traffic smoothing by optimizing automated vehicle trajectories. As one of the pioneering attempts, this study proposes an efficient trajectory optimization algorithm that can simultaneously improve a range of performance measures for a platoon of vehicles on a signalized highway section. This optimization is centered at a novel shooting heuristic (SH) for trajectory construction that considers realistic constraints including vehicle kinematic limits, traffic arrival patterns, carollowing safety, and signal operations. SH has a very parsimonious structure (e.g., only four acceleration parameters) and a very small computational complexity. Therefore, it is …
