Climate Change, Water Supply, And Agriculture In The Arid Western United States: Eighty Years Of Agricultural Census Observations From Idaho, Zeynep K. Hansen, Scott Lowe, Wenchao Xu

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

As the population and agricultural development in the U.S. expanded west throughout the 20th century, major water infrastructure projects were initiated in order to meet irrigation demand and to reduce the risk and uncertainty associated with highly variable water supplies.2 Agriculture in the arid and semi-arid western U.S. is particularly vulnerable to variability in water supply, and has evolved to rely heavily on major water infrastructure projects.3 In 2007, of the 57 million acres of irrigated cropland and pastureland in the U.S., nearly three-quarters was in the 17 western-most contiguous states; in 2008, irrigated agriculture applied 91.2 …

Environmental And Health Disparities In Appalachian Ohio: Perceptions And Realities, Michele Morrone, Natalie A. Kruse, Amy E. Chadwick Jan 2015

Environmental And Health Disparities In Appalachian Ohio: Perceptions And Realities, Michele Morrone, Natalie A. Kruse, Amy E. Chadwick

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Background. Appalachia is a region of the United States that faces significant environmental and health disparities. Understanding these disparities and the social determinants that contribute to them will help public health practitioners make better decisions. The purpose of this research is two-fold. First, through secondary data analysis, we document environmental and health disparities as well as demographic and economic conditions that may contribute to these disparities between Appalachian and non-Appalachian Ohio. Second, we examine perceptions of environmental health practitioners about the differences in environmental conditions between Appalachian and non-Appalachian Ohio.

Methods. We gathered secondary data about economics, health, and the …

Brokers Of Transformation: Prioritizing Community Interests In Community-University Sustainability Research, Stephen Hill, Brianna Salmon, Tessa Nesca, Todd Barr

Stream 4: Enterprising University

This paper describes and evaluates a community-driven research project in which Trent University researchers and students have partnered with three local community groups and one regional nonprofit organization to collaboratively research the options and needs for improving active transportation infrastructure in a socio-economically challenged neighbourhood in downtown Peterborough, Ontario. The project was initiated by organizations in our community and the Trent Community Research Centre, a non-profit organization that connects the community and university in research and learning activities, brokered a partnership with faculty at the university.

International Migration Of Health Professionals And The Marketization And Privatization Of Health Education In India: From Push-Pull To Global Political Economy, Margaret Walton-Roberts Jan 2015

International Migration Of Health Professionals And The Marketization And Privatization Of Health Education In India: From Push-Pull To Global Political Economy, Margaret Walton-Roberts

International Migration Research Centre

Health worker migration theories have tended to focus on labour market conditions as principal push or pull factors. The role of education systems in producing internationally oriented health workers has been less explored. In place of the traditional conceptual approaches to understanding health worker, especially nurse, migration, I advocate global political economy (GPE) as a perspective that can highlight how educational investment and global migration tendencies are increasing interlinked. The Indian case illustrates the globally oriented nature of health care training, and informs a broader understanding of both the process of health worker migration, and how it reflects wider marketization …

The Role Of Chinese Cities In Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction, Stephanie Ohshita, L Price, N Zhou, N Khanna, D Fridley, X Liu, China Energy Group, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Jan 2015

The Role Of Chinese Cities In Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction, Stephanie Ohshita, L Price, N Zhou, N Khanna, D Fridley, X Liu, China Energy Group, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Environmental Science

Currently, 3.9 billion people live in cities, representing 54% of the world’s population.1 Cities, as hubs of fossil fuel-based economic activity, emit over 70% of global energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The world’s 50 largest cities are collectively the third largest emitter of energy-related GHGs, after China and the U.S.2 In many North American cities, transportation accounts for the largest share of emissions, while industry and buildings are major sources in many Asian cities. The rate of urbanization is accelerating in the world's most populous countries, with associated rapid and high-volume production of energy- and carbon-intensive building materials to construct …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Significant climate risks are associated with a positive carbon–temperature feedback in northern latitude carbon-rich ecosystems, making an accurate analysis of human impacts on the net greenhouse gas balance of wetlands a priority. Here, we provide a coherent assessment of the climate footprint of a network of wetland sites based on simultaneous and quasi-continuous ecosystem observations of CO2 and CH4 fluxes. Experimental areas are located both in natural and in managed wetlands and cover a wide range of climatic regions, ecosystem types, and management practices. Based on direct observations we predict that sustained CH4 emissions in natural ecosystems are …

Voluntary Action In New Commons, Roger A. Lohmann Jan 2015

Voluntary Action In New Commons, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

A major new social, economic, political and cultural space (actually, a sector of many spaces) we can call the new commons has gradually emerged outside of markets, governments and households. It currently goes by many names and reaches far beyond the recognized and incorporated nonprofit sector to include many additional forms of voluntary assembly and organized action. This space is legally defined and is the domain of fundraising, volunteering, advocacy, mutual aid, self-help and various forms of collective behavior. It includes associations, groups and clubs but also constitutionally protected assembly - not only public gatherings but also parades, festivals, cosmopolitan …

Emergent Non-Consumptive Predator Effects Alter Habitat Colonization By Mosquitoes, Ethan G. Staats, Salvatore J. Agosta, James R. Vonesh

Rice Rivers Center Research Symposium

Top-down consumptive control (suppression) is an important driver of populations and communities of prey organisms. Diverse predator assemblages often yield non-linear suppression with respect to constituent species' effects (emergence); most often diversity enhances suppression. Predators also affect prey organisms non-consumptively through changes in prey physiological, physical, spatial, temporal, and behavioral responses to predators. Role of predator diversity in non-consumptive response by prey is relatively un-studied. Role of predator diversity in shaping prey populations and communities through habitat colonization is a novel question.

Applying Anthropology To What? Tactical/Ethical Decisions In An Age Of Global Neoliberal Imperialism, James R. Veteto, Joshua Lockyer

Faculty Publications - Behavioral Sciences

This article introduces the Journal of Political Ecology Special Section on ‘towards a political ecology of applied anthropology.’ We provide a brief overview and analysis of the history and application of applied and practicing anthropology. Examining moral and ethical issues related to the application of anthropology, we assess current endeavors and make suggestions for future directions from a political ecology perspective. Introducing five articles that exemplify our approach, we identify common themes and particular contexts that both unify and distinguish each of the contributions. Throughout this introduction, we propose a potential guidepost for a political-ecology informed applied anthropology: any applied …
