Municipal Waste Selection And Disposal: Evidences From Lombardy, Francesco Silvestri, Stefano Ghinoi Feb 2015

Municipal Waste Selection And Disposal: Evidences From Lombardy, Francesco Silvestri, Stefano Ghinoi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This article exploit a data base of 1.522 observations related to Lombardy’s municipalities to run a cross sectional estimation of the drivers of MW selection. We find no evidence of a significant correlation between the percentage of selected MW selection and market variables such as the unit charge for waste management, a result probably affected by the high degree of integration existing in Lombardy among collectors and disposal operators. On the contrary, we discover robust and significant correlation with a set of geographical, socio-economic, and political variables. Among the latter ones, we have a confirmations on the influence of party …

Land Use And Climate Change Bubbles: Resilience, Retreat, And Due Diligence, John R. Nolon Feb 2015

Land Use And Climate Change Bubbles: Resilience, Retreat, And Due Diligence, John R. Nolon

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

This Article examines events on the ground in several localities where climate change is lowering property values and analyzes how those changes in value can be reckoned with by regulators. It merges practices and principles of real estate transactions and finance with those of land use and environmental regulation.

Climate change is a planetary phenomenon whose environmental implications are far-reaching. Reports on climate change consequences increasingly focus on what is happening locally and presently, while speculation continues about long-term global consequences. In numerous communities, property values are declining because of repeated flooding, continued threats of storm surges, sustained high temperatures, …

The North American Winter 'Dipole' And Extremes Activity: A Cmip5 Assessment, Shih-Yu (Simon) Wang, Wan-Ru Huang, Jin-Ho Yoon

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

The 2013–2014 winter in North America brought intense drought in the West and severe cold in the East. The circulation anomalies were characterized as a dipole: an amplified upper-level ridge over the West Coast and a deepened trough over the central-eastern United States. A previous study using a single model has linked the dipole to the El Niño precursor and found that this link has strengthened in recent years. Here, 17 models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 are used to examine the dipole activity. Most models capture the dipole and its association with El Niño precursor and …

Opinions about public lands and the actions of private non-industrial forest owners in the western United States play important roles in forested landscape management as both public and private forests face increasing risks from large wildfires, pests and disease. This work presents the responses from two surveys, a random-sample telephone survey of more than 1500 residents and a mail survey targeting owners of parcels with 10 or more acres of forest. These surveys were conducted in three counties (Wallowa, Union, and Baker) in northeast Oregon, USA. We analyze these survey data using structural equation models in order to assess how …
