“At-Risk” Food Deserts In Lincoln, Nebraska, Samantha Corr Apr 2015

“At-Risk” Food Deserts In Lincoln, Nebraska, Samantha Corr

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

This investigational study conducted in Lincoln, Nebraska seeks to explore the link between geographic and economic barriers to food access. Food access is a problem in the United States. 29 percent of U.S. ZIP codes do not contain a grocery store or supermarket. Families also face barriers to food economically, as low income individuals are less able to afford food. Through the use of ArcGIS 10.2.2 for Desktop software this project seeks to visually represent the areas in which access to food is limited both geographically and financially. Creating one mile buffer zones around each grocery store in Lincoln, Nebraska …

Temperature Dependency Of Population Dynamics And Trophic Cascades In A Model Aquatic System, Reed Brodersen Apr 2015

Temperature Dependency Of Population Dynamics And Trophic Cascades In A Model Aquatic System, Reed Brodersen

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Determining how temperature alters direct predation and indirect trophic cascade effects will be crucial in understanding how global climate change affects community structure and stability. While we are starting to comprehend the effects of warming on individual trophic interactions and underlying mechanisms, effects of warming on multilevel food webs are mostly unknown. This study sought to experimentally observe potential effects of temperature on population and community dynamics, and the magnitude of trophic cascades. To reach these objectives, a three-tiered food web (Scenedesmus, Daphnia and Hydra) was designed, maintained, and observed at two different temperatures (17°C and 21°C) …

Do Adults Who Attend A Family Nature Event Have Correlations Between Environmental Responsible Behaviors, Connection To Nature, And Environmental Attitudes?, Angel Iverson

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Environmental education is an important way to provide information to the public regarding natural resources, ecosystems, and sustainability. The School of Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln hosts an annual family nature event, NaturePalooza, with the goal to educate families with hands-on activities about the environment, nature, natural resources. My main objectives are to find if there are correlations between environmental responsible behaviors, connection to nature, and environmental attitudes; also to determine if new knowledge is learned and new behaviors willing to be practiced at home. A ten minute survey was provided using Qualtrics online survey system on tablets …

Extension Professionals And Sustainability Practices: Are We Walking Our Talk?, Diana Rashash, Catherine Elliot, Ramona Madhosingh-Hector Apr 2015

Extension Professionals And Sustainability Practices: Are We Walking Our Talk?, Diana Rashash, Catherine Elliot, Ramona Madhosingh-Hector

Journal of Extension

Today more than ever, Extension is scrutinized and evaluated for its value and relevance to the public. This report summarizes a 2010 online survey conducted by members of the National Network for Sustainable Living Education (NNSLE) to assess the sustainability mindset of Extension employees. It assessed employee behaviors, motivations, and impediments—at work and at home—in five categories. Most notably, Extension employees are avid resource conservation practitioners who are strongly influenced by saving time and money. The findings provide a platform for sustainability education in Extension offices to promote transformative institutional and community change.

Biological Control Of Saltcedar (Tamarix Spp.) By Saltcedar Leaf Beetles (Diorhabda Spp.): Effects On Small Mammals, William S. Longland Mar 2015

Biological Control Of Saltcedar (Tamarix Spp.) By Saltcedar Leaf Beetles (Diorhabda Spp.): Effects On Small Mammals, William S. Longland

Western North American Naturalist

The spread of introduced saltcedar (Tamarix spp.) throughout many riparian systems across the western United States motivated the introduction of saltcedar leaf beetles (Diorhabda carinulata, D. elongata; Chrysomelidae) as a biological control agent specific to saltcedar. I monitored small mammal populations for up to 12 years as saltcedar defoliation progressed at 3 of the original saltcedar beetle release sites and at an additional site where beetles established through dispersal. There was no evidence of any linear effect of increasing defoliation over time on small mammal species richness. Estimated population sizes of 4 small mammal species, based on mark-release-recapture …

Size Distribution And Nutrient Excretion Of Melanoides Tuberculata In A Southern Nevada Spring Ecosystem, Knut Mehler, Kumud Acharya Mar 2015

Size Distribution And Nutrient Excretion Of Melanoides Tuberculata In A Southern Nevada Spring Ecosystem, Knut Mehler, Kumud Acharya

Western North American Naturalist

To better understand the impact of Melanoides tuberculata on ecosystem processes via nutrient recycling, we quantified the body size distribution, density, and ammonia-nitrogen (NH4–N) and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) excretion of M. tuberculata in Rogers Spring, which is located in southern Nevada. We examined how nutrient recycling rates were related to body size and body nutrient content. We found that small individuals dominated the size structure, density, and NH4–N and SRP excretion rates and that nutrient recycling was determined by biomass rather than by high per capita excretion rates. The NH4–N excretion rates of …

Postcolonial Ecocriticism: Greening Studies Of Postcolonialism, Fuguang Miao Mar 2015

Postcolonial Ecocriticism: Greening Studies Of Postcolonialism, Fuguang Miao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Postcolonial ecocriticism develops in the ecocrtitical turn of postcolonialism, and as the new development of postcolonialism, it is grounded on postcolonialism and ecocriticism, starting with and ending in the study of postcolonialism. This paper starts with a retrospective analysis of postcolonialism and then it examines postcolonial ecocriticism's theoretical sources in terms of ecological thoughts, history of colonialization, ecological imperialism and postcolonialism. The paper proceeds to summarize three main tasks of postcolonial ecocriticism, namely, tracing the historical connection between racism and speciesism, exposing the paradox between development and conservation of environment, and interpreting animal and environment writings in literary discourses, so …

Sharing The Love: Working With The Campus Community To Create Engaging Social Media Content, Angela Vanden Elzen Mar 2015

Sharing The Love: Working With The Campus Community To Create Engaging Social Media Content, Angela Vanden Elzen

Library Technology Conference

Many challenges arise when managing a library's social media presence, though the biggest is often generating engaging and interesting content. At Lawrence University's Mudd Library, we've begun the shift from trying to create content our target audience wants, to asking them to generate it for us. I’ll share how we have been able to work with other campus departments, students, alumni, and faculty to provide concrete examples of what the library can do for our patrons- and how we have been using social media to share these stories. Of course, we don’t ask others to do all of our work, …

Landscape Legacies Of Sugarcane Monoculture At Betty's Hope Plantation, Antigua, West Indies, Suzanna M. Pratt Mar 2015

Landscape Legacies Of Sugarcane Monoculture At Betty's Hope Plantation, Antigua, West Indies, Suzanna M. Pratt

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Sugarcane cultivation has played a key role in the development of the Caribbean since the seventeenth century A.D. The Eastern Caribbean island of Antigua in the West Indies was almost exclusively dedicated to sugarcane monoculture from the mid-1600s until its independence from Britain in 1981. This research seeks to better understand the landscape legacies left by long-term sugarcane monoculture at the site of Betty's Hope Plantation in Antigua. This study creates a 400-year simulation of crop yields using the USDA's Erosion Productivity Impact Calculator (EPIC), and evaluates the simulated trajectory of landscape change using historical information about the plantation's agricultural …

Cost-Effectiveness As Energy Policy Mechanisms: The Paradox Of Technology-Neutral And Technology-Specific Policies In The Short And Long Term, Paulo Henrique De Mello Sant'ana Mar 2015

Cost-Effectiveness As Energy Policy Mechanisms: The Paradox Of Technology-Neutral And Technology-Specific Policies In The Short And Long Term, Paulo Henrique De Mello Sant'ana

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

When choosing policy mechanisms to design and deploy energy policies, policymakers typically seek cost-effective ones, linking cost effectiveness to the lowest cost of support for RES-E generation and/or consumer costs. The objectives of this paper are to analyze the cost-effectiveness of renewable portfolio standards (RPS), feed-in tariffs (FIT) and auctions in the short and long term, considering both technology-neutral and technology-specific approaches. Results show that RPS and auctions are more cost-effective than feed-in tariffs (FIT) in the short term if cost-effectiveness is defined as minimizing consumer costs. Also, if one or more emerging technologies with higher levelized life cycle costs …
