Purdue VACCINE workshop reports
In response to the Food, Energy, Water Systems (FEWS) Nexus Challenge grant awarded by NSF, the team of investigators led by David Ebert, along with Christian Butzke, Melba Crawford, Phillip Owens, and Dimitrios Peroulis conducted a two-day workshop in Napa, California on November 5th and 6th, 2015. The workshop addressed the emerging issues in the food/energy/water systems throughout the diverse geography of the United States and over various crops and environmental conditions to better understand and model and ultimately devise a solution for the challenges to the FEWS nexus. One of the intended outcomes of the workshop was to generate …

Klaus Keller is a professor of geosciences at Penn State, with an adjunct appointment as a professor of engineering and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University. At Penn State, Keller directs the Center for Climate Risk Management (CLIMA) as well as the NSF-sponsored research network for Sustainable Climate Risk Management (SCRiM). Before joining Penn State, he worked as a research scientist and lecturer at Princeton University and as an engineer in Germany. Keller graduated from Princeton with a Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering. He received master’s degrees from M.I.T. and Princeton as well as an engineer’s degree from …

Fluid dynamics in karst systems is complex due to the heterogeneity of hydraulic networks that combine the Porous Fractured Matrix (PFM) and the interconnected drains (CS). These complex dynamic systems often need to be treated as “black boxes” in which only input and output properties are known. In this work, we propose to assess the first-order error induced by considering the temperature as a conservative tracer for flows mixing in karst (fluvio-karst). The fluvio-karstic system is treated as an open thermodynamic system (OTS), which exchanges water and heat with its surrounding. We propose to use a cylindrical PFM drained by …

Brilliouin Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (BOTDR) is a newly developed measurement and monitoring technique, which utilizes Brilliouin spectroscopy and Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (Jiang et al., 2006; Zhang et al., 2009; Xu et al.,2011) to measure strain generated in optical fibers as distributed in the longitudinal direction. This paper introduces the principle and characters of BOTDR technique firstly, and makes an example of karst collapse monitoring at section K14 of highway from Guilin to Yangshuo. Bombs And Babies: The Unfortunate Results Of Conversion Of A Military Defense Site To A Residential Neighborhood, Karen Zagrodny Consalo

There are over 9,000 Formerly Used Defense Sites in the United States. One of these sites, the Pine Castle Jeep Range, was located in what is now east Orlando. As a defense site during World War II, the area was intentionally bombarded with among other things, explosive and chemical bombs. Fifty years later, a population boom drew many to purchase their homes in the same area. This article examines the history of the Pine Castle Jeep Range and the issues resulting from subsequent increase in population. Maturity Characteristics Of Pacific Saury During Fishing Season In The Northwest Pacific, Wen-Bin Huang, Yu-Chun Huang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Pacific saury is a commercially important fish in the Northwest Pacific. This study examined the maturity characteristics, gonadosomatic index (GSI), condition factor (CF), and ovarian developmental stage of the saury stock in three months of the fishing season (from May to December) in the Northwest Pacific. The maturity characteristics of saury varied among these three months (May, July, and October) in 2009. In May, large GSI and CF values with advanced ovarian developmental stages but small knob lengths (KnL) and body weights (BW) were found. Quantification Of Statistical Uncertainties In Performing The Peak Over Threshold Method, Yi Zhang, Yingyi Cao, Jian Dai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Peak over threshold (POT) method is frequently used in the modeling of extreme values in offshore engineering. In this paper, the POT method is examined in terms of epistemic uncertainties in practical usage. Real observed ocean data with specific considerations to extreme events are analyzed. In particular, the procedures including the use of de-clustering and threshold in POT method are addressed. A key element in the application of probability and statistical theories is the estimation of model parameters. The performance of these estimation methods is tested in the context of epistemic uncertainty. This is done through a numerical simulation study …

Geography and Environmental Studies Major Research Papers
This research seeks to provide an explanation and evaluation of facilitated migration as an adaptation approach for improving the long-term resilience and sustainability of Acer saccharum (sugar maple) ecosystems and sugarbush production. The research concludes that faciliated migration is supported by producers and other industry stakeholders as a feasable adaptation approach for improving resilience and sustainability.

The importance of urban universities in civic ecology education and the transformation of urban spaces and mindsets has been little explored. With as many as 1475 colleges, universities, and communities colleges in large cities around the United States, many of which possess significant land holdings, it is conceivable that these institutions could make a significant contribution to the "greening" of cities. This paper posits that urban universities, especially those with environmental science and studies or sustainability-related programs, can be a locus for civic ecology education and can contribute, not only to the transformation of urban landscapes but also to the …
