School Gardens: Cultivating A Child’S Nutritional Habits, Environmental Knowledge, And Sustainability Practices, Jeffrey Meltzer Jan 2015

School Gardens: Cultivating A Child’S Nutritional Habits, Environmental Knowledge, And Sustainability Practices, Jeffrey Meltzer

Honors Theses

School gardens have existed since the late nineteenth century and today are becoming increasingly popular in many parts of the world, including where I studied in Maine and Australia (AUS). Multiple organizations support school gardens in Maine, including the Maine School Garden Network, which has over 125 registered school gardens. In AUS, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation primarily supports the school garden movement and has over 800 registered school gardens. While many researchers have studied school gardens, few have compared two countries, focused on environmental sustainability, or investigated Maine in particular. This thesis combines information from literature reviews, and …

Sociological Effects Of Wind Farms In Maine, Jeanne E. Barthold, Jeanne Barthold Jan 2015

Sociological Effects Of Wind Farms In Maine, Jeanne E. Barthold, Jeanne Barthold

Honors Theses

Renewable Energy is an extremely important topic in today's energy discussions. In Maine, with the motivation of Governor Baldacci, there was a rapid push towards utilizing wind energy, starting with the Wind Energy Act in 2008. While the theory of wind farms and wind energy seems intelligent at a first glance, it is not an energy source that lacks issues. Many of the Maine wind farms constructed in the last ten years have had a large impact on human health, altered the beauty of Maine, created a change in wildlife habitats, and completely torn apart communities. Every new energy source …

Assessing The Carbon Impacts Of Colby College’S Biomass Plant, Alice Hotopp Jan 2015

Assessing The Carbon Impacts Of Colby College’S Biomass Plant, Alice Hotopp

Honors Theses

Biomass energy plants are considered to be carbon neutral systems under some definitions. However, this concept of carbon neutrality needs to be rethought in order to understand the true carbon impact of biomass plants upon global climate change. A biomass plant’s wood source, the extent to which the biomass plant emits carbon dioxide, and the timescale over which the biomass plant emits carbon should all be taken into account. In this study, I consider the Colby College biomass plant’s role in carbon cycling. Colby’s Physical Plant Department provided me with information on how much carbon (tons of woodchips) is used …

Student Works (2010-2019)

Sisters Before The Fall, Heather Lanae Captain Jan 2015

Sisters Before The Fall, Heather Lanae Captain

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis comprises the first fourteen chapters of a fiction entitled "Sisters Before the Fall", which brings to the forefront extreme, yet, real abuses faced by women in the Middle East and the northeastern countries of Africa. Those abuses are the result of social, political, and cultural influences, and include general repression of women and girls, female genital mutilation, marriage of prepubescent girls, and the slave trade. A female American volunteer and a female Hispanic doctor meet these women in a humanitarian compound in western Sudan. As they work together to overcome challenges brought on by war, they realize they …

Phronetic Perspective In Policy Analysis: An Investigation On National Climate Change Policy In Malaysia / Ezwan Arman Noor Kamar, Noor Kamar Ezwan Arman

Student Works (2010-2019)

Climate change has become a major issue around the world. In the recent period, the impact of climate change has grown enormously, and almost impossible for a country to deal with its effects alone. Climate change has major implications, which includes not only scientific, but also political, economic, socio-cultural, psychological, and ethical, which should be understood by policy makers and society in order to respond effectively to this issue. Nevertheless, policy makers wield a great deal of influence in shaping the meaning of climate change and in developing and executing adaptation and mitigation plans and strategies for countries and their …

The Effects Of Hydropeaking On Lotic Benthic Macroinvertebrate Assemblages, Andrew L. Garey Jan 2015

The Effects Of Hydropeaking On Lotic Benthic Macroinvertebrate Assemblages, Andrew L. Garey

Theses and Dissertations

The term hydropeaking refers to anthropogenically induced, short-duration, high-magnitude discharge pulses that are generated in lotic systems for electricity production. The practice of hydropeaking produces the largest source of renewable energy worldwide, and its use is projected to increase through the year 2040. The primary objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of hydropeaking on benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages, which are important components of lotic ecosystems. Results of this work show that, across a wide range of impacted systems worldwide, the consistently observed patterns of elevated benthic macroinvertebrate drift in response to hydropeaking pulses are primarily related to the …

Credit Counselling In Canada: An Empirical Examination, Stephanie Ben-Ishai, Saul Schwartz Jan 2015

Credit Counselling In Canada: An Empirical Examination, Stephanie Ben-Ishai, Saul Schwartz

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

When debt becomes unmanageable, two options for a consumer debtor in Canada are: (1) enlisting the services of a bankruptcy trustee, and (2) becoming a client of a not-for-profit credit counselling agency. Each of these options is regulated differently and has public and private dimensions. At first glance, these two options might seem to illustrate the potential of multiple legal orders to better serve the public. In this paper, however, we argue, based on empirical research on the credit counselling industry, that while this pluralism has potential to facilitate debt relief in Canada, it has failed to do so. The …

Foreign Investor Protection And Climate Action: A New Price Tag For Urgent Policies, Gus Van Harten Jan 2015

Foreign Investor Protection And Climate Action: A New Price Tag For Urgent Policies, Gus Van Harten

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

From a climate perspective, not all investment is equal. Desirable investment in clean energy needs encouragement and protection, while undesirable investment in fossil fuels needs clear policy signals to avoid further investment in destructive activities and stranding more assets. In this paper, evidence is presented on how foreign investor protection provisions in trade and investment agreements tilt the playing field in favor of entrenched incumbents and against urgent action on climate; on the potential for a massive expansion of investor-state litigation and risks to climate policy in proposed trade deals; and on key flaws in recent European Commission proposals to …

Biodegradation And Idealized Modeling Of Drilling Fluids, South Mcmurdo Sound, Antarctica, Ellen Lynn Raimondi Jan 2015

Biodegradation And Idealized Modeling Of Drilling Fluids, South Mcmurdo Sound, Antarctica, Ellen Lynn Raimondi

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This project explored the potential fate and transport of seawater-based drilling fluid used in the Antarctic Drilling Program (ANDRILL) South McMurdo Sound project (SMS). The SMS drilling reported a loss of 5.6 x 10 5 liters of drilling fluid to the surrounding formation throughout a borehole depth of 1139m. The introduction of these drilling fluids raise concerns of potential contamination to a pristine, isolated environment. The volume of fluid lost to the subsurface is unrecoverable and will only break down through natural attenuation processes, such as biodegradation. The objectives of this study are to estimate the extent of fluid migration …

Long-Term Vegetation Change In Utah's Henry Mountains: A Study In Repeat Photography, Charles E. Kay

Aspen Bibliography

An extensive search was conducted of archival and other sources to locate as many historical photographs as possible for the Henry Mountains in south-central Utah. Those images were then taken into the field, the original camera stations relocated, and modern pictures made of the historical scenes to evaluate long-term vegetation change and land management activities. In all, 626 repeat photo sets were compiled—608 by the author and 18 by Earl Hindley. This book includes 126 photo sets that were representative of the areas studied.

Snow Cover Variability In A Forest Ecotone Of The Oregon Cascades Via Modis Terra Products, Tihomir Sabinov Kostadinov, Todd R. Lookingbill Jan 2015

Snow Cover Variability In A Forest Ecotone Of The Oregon Cascades Via Modis Terra Products, Tihomir Sabinov Kostadinov, Todd R. Lookingbill

Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications

Snowcover pattern and persistence have important implications for planetary energy balance, climate sensitivity to forcings, and vegetation structure, function, and composition. Variability in snow cover within mountainous regions of the Pacific Northwest, USA is attributable to a combination of anthropogenic climate change and climate oscillations. However, snowcovered areas can be heterogeneous and patchy, requiring more detailed mapping of snow trends to understand their potential influences on montane forests. We used standard dailyMODIS snow products (MOD10A1.5) to investigate the 15-year record (2000–2014) of snow cover in the predominant forest ecotone of the Oregon Western Cascades. We modeled the ecotone using field …

Assessing Public Attitudes Toward Endangered Freshwater Mussels, Belyna Marie Bentlage Jan 2015

Assessing Public Attitudes Toward Endangered Freshwater Mussels, Belyna Marie Bentlage

Open Access Theses

The Tippecanoe River, situated in northcentral Indiana, supports five federally endangered and one federally threatened species of freshwater mussels. Past overharvesting and present water quality degradation threaten the survivorship of these mussels. To increase awareness about the imperilment of the mussels, we are designing an outreach and education campaign. The first step of the campaign is to collect baseline data about riparian landowner attitudes toward the federally listed mussels. We surveyed 1804 landowners who own property along the Tippecanoe River. We found significant differences in attitudes among landowners based on their awareness of a conflict that occurred as a result …

The World Become Image: Nonrepresentational Discussions Of Film And The Natural World, Gary Matthew Varner Jan 2015

The World Become Image: Nonrepresentational Discussions Of Film And The Natural World, Gary Matthew Varner

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the relationships between film and the natural world. Building upon extant work in the burgeoning field of Ecocinema, this project attempts to move beyond the scholarly work on Ecocinema that satisfies itself with questions of representation. The issues and arguments taken up here tend to be more programmatic. This work is interested in ecological exchanges, encounters, and relationships, not representations. The first chapter introduces the project, its origins, and the philosophical motivations for working outside the mode of representation. The second chapter excavates a concern for animals and the environment within the margins and subtext of classical …

University Food Gardens: A Unifying Place For Higher Education Sustainability, Leslie A. Duram, Sydney K. Klein Jan 2015

University Food Gardens: A Unifying Place For Higher Education Sustainability, Leslie A. Duram, Sydney K. Klein

Publications

This research describes the key characteristics of campus food gardens and investigates their contribution to overall campus sustainability. An email-survey of fifty-two campus garden managers in North America provided quantitative and qualitative data for this analysis. It was found that gardens are often student initiated and managed, but also bring together diverse stakeholders from the campus and community. These sites increase sustainability awareness as well as overall institutional sustainability. University food gardens provide formal education that overcomes many institutional barriers to interdisciplinary programs. Informal education also occurs at these sites through experiential learning which leads to greater environmental awareness among …

Dibe' Bikee' Deya: Following Sheep In Coal Country, Caitlin A. Piserchia

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Black Mesa is a mineral-rich area of the Navajo and Hopi Nations in Arizona; it is both the locus of the historic so-called Hopi-Navajo land conflict and the coal mines that have helped make possible the electricity usage of Las Vegas. It is also a case study in cultural change and resistance in response to pressures of industrialization and capitalism. In an interdisciplinary, creative nonfiction writing project, I am looking in particular at the pressures on sheepherding as livelihood in Black Mesa. I will examine how sheepherding has changed since the advent of the Black Mesa and Kayenta coal mines. …

The Nature Of Disconnect: Wilderness In The Face Of Climate Change, Sarah Capdeville

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

In the midst of a congressional address on the topic of conservation and restoration, President Lyndon B. Johnson stated, “This generation has altered the composition of the atmosphere on a global scale through . . . a steady increase in carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels.” It was 1965. One year prior, Congress had passed the Wilderness Act of 1964, defining wilderness as “an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.” When the founders of the Wilderness Act wrote these words, they …

Publications and Research

Wetlands are the world’s largest natural source of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. The strong sensitivity of methane emissions to environmental factors such as soil temperature and moisture has led to concerns about potential positive feedbacks to climate change. This risk is particularly relevant at high latitudes, which have experienced pronounced warming and where thawing permafrost could potentially liberate large amounts of labile carbon over the next 100 years. However, global models disagree as to the magnitude and spatial distribution of emissions, due to uncertainties in wetland area and emissions per unit area and a scarcity of in situ observations. …
