Phytoremediation Of Metal Contamination Using Salix (Willows), Gordon J. Kersten
Phytoremediation Of Metal Contamination Using Salix (Willows), Gordon J. Kersten
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abandoned hardrock mines and the resulting Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) are a source of vast, environmental degradation that are toxic threats to plants, animals, and humans. Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are metal contaminants often found in AMD. In my mine outwash water samples, cadmium and lead concentrations were 19 and 160 times greater than concentrations in control waterways, and 300 and 40 times greater than EPA Aquatic Life Use water quality standards, respectively. I tested the phytoremediation characteristics of three montane willows native to the Rocky Mountains: Salix drummondiana, S. monticola, and S. planifolia. I tested …

A Discursive Perspective On China's Global Politics Of Climate Change, 1992–2013, Yi-Tsui Tseng
A Discursive Perspective On China's Global Politics Of Climate Change, 1992–2013, Yi-Tsui Tseng
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates China’s recent shift in its climate change policy with a refined discourse approach. Methodologically, by adopting a neo-Gramscian notion of hegemony, a generative definition of discourse and an ontological pluralist position, the study constructs a theoretical framework named “discursive hegemony” that identifies the “social forces” for enabling social change and focuses on the role of discursive mechanisms via which the forces operate and produce effects.
The key empirical finding of this study was that it was a co-evolution of conditions that shaped the outcome as China’s climate policy shift. In examining the case, a before-after within-case comparison …

Perspectivas Culturais Na Comunicação Climática (Cultural Perspectives On Climate Communication), Karen E. Pennesi
Anthropology Publications

Climate Trends In The Casco Bay Region, Marina Schauffler Phd
Climate Trends In The Casco Bay Region, Marina Schauffler Phd
Publications
The Casco Bay region is vulnerable to all seven of the climate stressors identified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA): warmer summers; warmer winters; warmer waters; increased drought; increased storminess (evident in higher total precipitation, frequency and intensity); sea-level rise; and ocean acidification (US EPA 2014). These climate stressors do not operate in isolation. Compounding their impacts are factors such as population growth, habitat fragmentation and destruction, and resource depletion that can further tax ecosystems and species. This document summarizes current scientific evidence of these trends within Maine and, where possible, within the Casco Bay watershed (which coincides …

Manager Perspectives On Communication And Public Engagement In Ecological Restoration Project Success, Caroline Gottschalk Druschke, Kristen C. Hychka
Professional and Public Writing Faculty Publications
We look to a particular social-ecological system, the restoration community in Rhode Island, USA and the rivers, wetlands, marshes, and estuaries they work to protect, to draw connections between communication, community involvement, and ecological restoration project success. Offering real-world examples drawn from interviews with 27 local, state, federal, and nonprofit restoration managers, we synthesize the mechanisms that managers found effective to argue that the communication employed by resource managers in each phase of the restoration process, in prioritization, implementation, and monitoring, and for garnering broad-based support, shapes the quality of public engagement in natural resources management, which, in turn, can …

Anthropogenic Impacts As Revealed From Sediment Cores From Punderson Lake Ohio, Ronald A. Van Blarcum
Anthropogenic Impacts As Revealed From Sediment Cores From Punderson Lake Ohio, Ronald A. Van Blarcum
ETD Archive
Sediment core archives provide a history of data useful for serving as a long-term monitoring reserve to evaluate chronological events of contamination to lake systems. This could be an effective tool for continual environmental management, monitoring and potential restoration efforts. This method is also very cost-effective without the addition of a water quality monitoring station on site. Taking 3 sediment cores from Punderson Lake Ohio for analysis has allowed associating variations in select metals to anthropogenic events or activities we can determine a time frame with limited uncertainty and resolve the intensity of anthropogenic contamination to the lake starting with …
A Grape Idea: Competitive Collaboration Is A Win-Win For Regional Archives, Rachael Cristine Woody, Melissa Salrin
A Grape Idea: Competitive Collaboration Is A Win-Win For Regional Archives, Rachael Cristine Woody, Melissa Salrin
Faculty & Staff Publications
In the summer of 2014, Linfield College and Whitman College archivists Rachael Woody and Melissa Salrin teamed up to document the history of the Walla Walla wine industry. While collaboration in the archives isn’t new, Woody and Salrin offer their perspective on the benefits of such partnerships even when the institutions wish to acquire the same materials and work with the same donors. The authors argue this project can serve as a blueprint for other repositories that wish to document community history and/or work collaboratively with a competing institution. Woody and Salrin outline the respective histories of their institutions and …
Biotechnological Aspects And Perspective Of Microbial Keratinase Production, S.C.B. Gopinath, P. Anbu, T. Lakshmipriya, T.H. Tang, Y. Chen, I. Hashim, A.R. Ruslinda, M.K.M. Arshad
Biotechnological Aspects And Perspective Of Microbial Keratinase Production, S.C.B. Gopinath, P. Anbu, T. Lakshmipriya, T.H. Tang, Y. Chen, I. Hashim, A.R. Ruslinda, M.K.M. Arshad
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Keratinases are proteolytic enzymes predominantly active when keratin substrates are available that attack disulfide bridges in the keratin to convert them from complex to simplified forms. Keratinases are essential in preparation of animal nutrients, protein supplements, leather manufacture, textile processing, detergent formulation, feather meal processing for feed and fertilizer, the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries, and waste management. Accordingly, it is necessary to develop a method for continuous production of keratinase from reliable sources that can be easily managed. Microbial keratinase is less expensive than conventionally produced keratinase and can be obtained from fungi, bacteria, and actinomycetes. In this overview, the …
Piecemeal Reform Of Trade And Environmental Policy When Consumption Also Pollutes, Mark R. Metcalfe, John C. Beghin
Piecemeal Reform Of Trade And Environmental Policy When Consumption Also Pollutes, Mark R. Metcalfe, John C. Beghin
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
We incorporate endogenous (price-responsive) consumption pollution into a dual trade model to assess welfare effects of coordinated trade and environmental piecemeal reform in a small, open and distorted economy. Pollution is generated by production and consumption. Producers control the level of pollution and face incentives to abate both types of pollution. We identify sufficient conditions for welfare-improving reforms of trade and environmental policies. An additional domestic environmental policy instrument must be imposed on exportables because of their supply response to foreign environmental taxes.

Situating Sarnia: 'Unimagined Communities' In The New National Energy Debate, Dayna Nadine Scott
Situating Sarnia: 'Unimagined Communities' In The New National Energy Debate, Dayna Nadine Scott
Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series
This paper argues that the active “unimagining” of downstream communities is crucial to maintaining a notion of unitary national ascent in the rhetoric surrounding the articulation of a new national energy strategy, specifically in relation to the pipeline debates that have gripped and divided Canadians. The exclusion of these unimagined communities downstream is demonstrated by situating Sarnia, Ontario — home to Canada’s biggest petro-chemical complex — both legally and spatially. Examining in detail the recent decision of the National Energy Board approving Enbridge’s application to reverse the flow of oil over a portion of its “Line 9” pipeline between Sarnia …
The Influence Of Community Perceptions On Climate Change Policy, Ashley Johnson
The Influence Of Community Perceptions On Climate Change Policy, Ashley Johnson
Theses & ETDs
Florida’s Seven50 and Climate Change Compact plans have received both praise and opposition. While counties such as Monroe and Miami-Dade are experiencing first-hand the effects of climate change; counties in northern Florida (St. Lucie, Martin, and Indian River) do not see sea level rise as an immediate threat. Consequently, the opinions of the residents in these counties have influenced either their resignation or participation in both Seven50 and the Climate Change Compact. This thesis will present the results of five separate interviews which seek to understand why the four counties in southern Florida (Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach) maintained …
Climate Change Impacts On Mosquito-Borne Diseases: A Closer Look At Malaria And Dengue, Marisa Godfrey
Climate Change Impacts On Mosquito-Borne Diseases: A Closer Look At Malaria And Dengue, Marisa Godfrey
Theses & ETDs
A new focus of international concern over climate change is the impacts it could have on vector-borne diseases. This thesis specifically looks at two mosquito-borne diseases: malaria and dengue. The ecology of malaria including the vector Anopheles and the parasite plasmodium are examined and how each relates to different climate drivers. Similarly, I examine the ecology of dengue including the vector Aedes and the virus, and how each of those relates to climate drivers. In light of climate and health concerns mosquito control will have to adjust which brings this paper to the case study in Key West, Florida. The …

The Written Collapse: A Comparative Evaluation Of The Terminal Classic Maya Collapse, Mariama Jones
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines collapse theories of the Terminal Classic southern Maya lowland polities in the 8th and 9th centuries, with specific emphasis on Copán and Tikal. This body of work seeks to catalogue Maya collapse theories, thoroughly analyze two Maya polities and finally analyze both states through comparative study, taking special interest in the environmental and political aspects of their collapses. I have analyzed the many causes of the collapse and I have specifically examined the similarities in the collapses of Tikal and Copán, in an attempt to explain the timelines of their collapses. While there has been dissension on …

“Making It Work”: Public Representation And (Re)Interpretation Of Homelessness And Homeless Management In Sarasota, Fl, Haris Adele Peteranecz
Theses & ETDs
Following Ferguson’s (1990) methodology of studying the ‘development apparatus’ through analyzing professional development reports, this thesis examines the professional ‘homeless management apparatus’ in Sarasota, Florida by analyzing ‘The Marbut Report,’ a professional homeless management report created to represent homelessness in Sarasota as an issue created by the local “culture of enablement” and recommends twelve steps to shift to a “culture of engagement.” These recommendations sparked public debate, and since the city and county commission’s decision to end their pursuit of the report’s recommendations, Sarasota community members have created their own forms of “engagement” with homelessness. Through analyzing academic literature about …
QʷidiččaʔA·Tx̌ / Makah: Cultural Self-Representation And The Struggle For Sovereignty, Hannah Gilbert
QʷidiččaʔA·Tx̌ / Makah: Cultural Self-Representation And The Struggle For Sovereignty, Hannah Gilbert
Theses & ETDs
The Makah, an American Indian tribe who live on the tip of the Olympic Peninsula, are trying to revive their treaty-protected traditional whaling practice which was, in past years, halted due to endangered populations. Now that the gray whale stock has recovered, the Makah are embroiled in a controversy over Treaty Rights, environmental protection, and heritage. Through the Makah Cultural and Research Center (MCRC) exhibit, public speaking, interpretation, and media coverage, different Makah people represent their culture in order to forward self-determination and human rights goals. This thesis is the result of fieldwork observation at the MCRC. I analyze how …
“Bring Home The Salmon”: Examining The Klamath Dams And The Largest Dam Removal In World History, Darcey Evans
“Bring Home The Salmon”: Examining The Klamath Dams And The Largest Dam Removal In World History, Darcey Evans
Theses & ETDs
The Klamath River, stretching between California and Oregon, has been used as an artery of life support by Native American peoples in the region for thousands of years. The river provides the tribal peoples with a connection to their creators, ancestors, and environment, and continuing into the 21st century, the subsistence, ceremonies, identities, and worldviews of the tribal peoples are deeply connected to the Klamath River and its surrounding landscape. During the 20th century, six dams were constructed on the Klamath River, causing unprecedented levels of ecological and cultural disruption. The four hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River are potentially …
