Community Systems, Health Knowledge, And The Role Of Promotoras De Salud In Rural Bolivia, Jennifer Grasso

Public Health Theses

Community Health Worker (CHW) programs have had a positive impact on public health across many settings worldwide. However, due to the nature of their vocation and the challenging health infrastructure in which they often work, these individuals commonly face significant barriers that threaten their performance as health promoters, educators, and liaisons. This qualitative research study assessed the perceived challenges for volunteers of a rural Promotoras de Salud program in Bolivia. Data were collected by way of in-person interviews with 20 active Promotoras de Salud of ten communities in the north central region. Results showed that two commonly reported sources of …

The Pura Belpré Award And The Portrayal Of Disability, Zoe Houser Jan 2015

The Pura Belpré Award And The Portrayal Of Disability, Zoe Houser

Honors Program Theses

The Pura Belpré Award is one of the lesser known literary awards. Because other literary awards have been around longer and received a large amount of attention, there has been much research done over the other literary awards, including how the award books portray disabled characters within their pages. However, there is a lack of research about the portrayal of disability in books that have been awarded or honored by the Pura Belpré Award.

This paper will address the question of how many Pura Belpré Award winning books include prominent characters with disabilities and if they are portrayed positively or …

Effect Of Physical Activity On Lipid Markers In Breast Cancer Survivors Taking Aromatase Inhibitors: The Hormones And Physical Exercise Study, Norbert Hootsmans

Public Health Theses

The use of aromatase inhibitors (AIs) has been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and unfavorable changes in lipid profile in postmenopausal breast cancer survivors. In other populations, physical activity has been shown to successfully reduce CVD risk and improve lipid parameters. The Hormones and Physical Exercise (HOPE) study was a yearlong randomized trial examining the impact of exercise vs. usual care on AI-associated side effects. This analysis examined the effect of exercise on lipid profiles among HOPE participants.

We enrolled 121 physically inactive (<90 min/wk of aerobic activity and no strength training) postmenopausal breast cancer survivors receiving an AI for at least 6 months. Participants were randomly assigned to exercise (150 min/wk of aerobic exercise and supervised strength training 2x/wk) or to usual care. Fasting blood samples (>12 hours) were collected at the baseline, 6- and 12-month clinic visits. Intervention effects …

It Takes Two?: Exploring The Supportive Role Of Fathers During Pregnancy And Its Effect On Birth Outcomes Among Young Couples, Grace Kim

Public Health Theses

Few studies have evaluated the relationship between prenatal paternal support and adverse birth outcomes among young couples. Traditionally, paternal support has been measured based on pregnancy wantedness and the presence of the father’s name on the child’s birth certificate. However, these indices may not capture key components of paternal support. The current study developed a paternal support index that expands the traditional view of parental support by incorporating other forms of support, including financial support, accompanying the mother to prenatal care visits, labor/birth classes, ultrasound appointments, and the father’s presence at the child’s birth. We examined its association with various …

The Right To Housing In France: Still A Long Way To Go From Intention To Implementation, Claire Lévy-Vroelant Jan 2015

The Right To Housing In France: Still A Long Way To Go From Intention To Implementation, Claire Lévy-Vroelant

Journal of Law and Social Policy

The goal of this essay is to examine the implementation of housing rights in France. Legislation adopted in March 2007 opened the possibility of an enforceable right, which can be asserted before a court. However, it also created new inequalities before the law. Indeed, the conditions required to access that right exclude people who do not have permanent residence or a valid temporary resident permit. The implementation of this right is also limited due to the lack of available housing, especially at Ile-de-France, and to competition between people with priority entitlements. The horrible fire at a furnished Parisian hotel in …
