Inferring Types To Eliminate Ownership Checks In An Intentional Javascript Compiler, Chris Hebert Jan 2015

Inferring Types To Eliminate Ownership Checks In An Intentional Javascript Compiler, Chris Hebert

Master's Theses and Capstones

Concurrent programs are notoriously difficult to develop due to the non-deterministic nature of thread scheduling. It is desirable to have a programming language to make such development easier. Tscript comprises such a system. Tscript is an extension of JavaScript that provides multithreading support along with intent specification. These intents allow a programmer to specify how parts of the program interact in a multithreaded context. However, enforcing intents requires run-time memory checks which can be inefficient. This thesis implements an optimization in the Tscript compiler that seeks to improve this inefficiency through static analysis. Our approach utilizes both type inference and …

Development Of A Biaxial Loading Frame For Thin Sheet Cruciform Specimens, Joseph Frederick Wilson Jan 2015

Development Of A Biaxial Loading Frame For Thin Sheet Cruciform Specimens, Joseph Frederick Wilson

Master's Theses and Capstones

Characterization of the evolving yield loci and forming limit diagrams for sheet materials under biaxial loading is necessary for the development of accurate sheet metal forming process simulations. Biaxial tension testing has been shown to have significant advantages over the current computational and experimental methods for such material characterization; however, the few commercially available loading frames are far too large and expensive to be practical for most metal forming research laboratories. To address this problem, the University of New Hampshire’s Mechanics, Materials, and Manufacturing Lab is working to design a practical servohydraulic biaxial loading frame for such metal forming laboratories. …

An Assessment Of Path Loss Tools And Practical Testing Of Television White Space Frequencies For Rural Broadband Deployments, Braden Scott Blanchette Jan 2015

An Assessment Of Path Loss Tools And Practical Testing Of Television White Space Frequencies For Rural Broadband Deployments, Braden Scott Blanchette

Master's Theses and Capstones

Broadband internet has grown to become a major part of our daily routines. With this growth increase, those without direct access will not be afforded the same opportunities that come with it. The need for ubiquitous coverage of broadband Internet is clear to provide everyone these opportunities. Rural environments are an area of concern of falling behind the growth as the low population densities make wired broadband solutions cost prohibitive. Wireless options are often the only option for many of these areas; WiFi, cellular, and WiMAX networks are currently used around the world, but with the opening of the unused …

Non-Industrial Private Forest Landowner Engagement And Amenity- Driven Migration In Wildfire-Prone Landscapes Of The Inland Northwest, Morgan Ann Crowley Jan 2015

Non-Industrial Private Forest Landowner Engagement And Amenity- Driven Migration In Wildfire-Prone Landscapes Of The Inland Northwest, Morgan Ann Crowley

Master's Theses and Capstones

Rural counties in the Inland Northwest have a ‘working lands’ culture that supports livelihoods dependent on the health of wildfire-prone private and public forests. Wildfires threaten economic livelihoods and exacerbate the challenges of working landscapes impacted by changing economies, demographic trends, and forest conditions. The main objectives of this thesis are to investigate: 1) what comprises amenity-driven migration and how are amenity- driven migration and wildfire severity related?; 2) are amenity-driven migrants engaged in forest management activities in Wallowa County, Oregon and what is forest management engagement?; 3) how does landowner parcel proximity from WUI, USFS land relate to perspectives …

Evaluating Changes In Patient Anxiety Regarding Classic Cancer Genetic Testing Versus Expanded Multiplex Cancer Genetic Testing, Andrew Todd Alfonso Jan 2015

Evaluating Changes In Patient Anxiety Regarding Classic Cancer Genetic Testing Versus Expanded Multiplex Cancer Genetic Testing, Andrew Todd Alfonso

Theses and Dissertations

Multiplex cancer genetic testing by next generation sequencing (NGS) offers genetic counselors and patients new options for testing multiple genes beyond BRCA1 and BRCA2, increasing both the yield of positive results and the number of variants of uncertain significance (VUS). This pilot study explored three psychosocial questions related to multiplex cancer genetic testing: 1). Do anxiety levels differ in patients with results of familiar single gene testing versus those with results of multiplex cancer genetic testing of unfamiliar genes? 2). Do different results (i.e., negative, positive, or VUS) affect patient anxiety levels in the post-results period? 3). Is patient anxiety …

Exploring Communication Patterns In The Discussion Of Maternal Pku Syndrome Between Parents And Daughters, Hannah Beth Andrews Jan 2015

Exploring Communication Patterns In The Discussion Of Maternal Pku Syndrome Between Parents And Daughters, Hannah Beth Andrews

Theses and Dissertations

Maternal PKU syndrome is the collection of features and birth defects that arise from uncontrolled phenylalanine levels in a pregnant woman with phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) deficiency, previously known as phenylketonuria (PKU). Currently, the literature is lacking in exploring what young women are being told about maternal PKU syndrome. In this study, communication patterns between parents and their daughters about maternal PKU syndrome were investigated through an online survey completed by parents. The survey assessed parents’ level of comfort with this topic, the information they discussed with their daughter and the resources they accessed. Followup interviews were conducted with participants to …

Evaluating The “Family-Centered” Approach Of Pediatric Multidisciplinary Down Syndrome Clinics: A Parents’ Perspective, Devon A. Haynes

Theses and Dissertations

Down syndrome is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability. Individuals with Down syndrome usually display mild to moderate intellectual disability, developmental delay, characteristic facial features, and an increased risk for birth defects and various medical problems. Multidisciplinary clinics were established to address the multi-system health concerns for Down syndrome, increase adherence to medical management guidelines, and provide coordinated and comprehensive care for the patient. Research has examined the beneficial effect of a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and medical outcomes; however, no studies have been done which evaluate the psychosocial aspect of the care provided.

We hypothesized that …

Purpose: Cancer genetics has emerged as a critical specialty within the field of genetic counseling. Advancements in research are constantly uncovering new insights into the genetics of cancer and inherited cancer syndromes. It is crucial that genetic counselors and the institutions in which they work are in sync with these advancements. Currently, multiplex or multi-gene cancer testing is rapidly being adapted into the cancer genetic counseling setting. The ‘hot topic’ of an increased likelihood of receiving variant results following such testing has been explored in depth in the literature. However, research surrounding genetic counseling practices and the reclassification of VUS …

Hospital Preparedness In Community Measles Outbreaks-Challenges And Recommendations For Low-Resource Settings, Sadia Shakoor, Fatima Mir, Anita Zaidi, Afia Zafar Jan 2015

Hospital Preparedness In Community Measles Outbreaks-Challenges And Recommendations For Low-Resource Settings, Sadia Shakoor, Fatima Mir, Anita Zaidi, Afia Zafar

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

We have reviewed various strategies involved in containment of measles in healthcare facilities during community outbreaks. The strategies that are more applicable to resource-poor settings, such as natural ventilation, mechanical ventilation with heating and air-conditioning systems allowing unidirectional air-flow, and protection of un-infected patients and healthcare workers (HCWs), have been examined. Ventilation methods need innovative customization for resource-poor settings followed by validation and post-implementation analysis for impact. Mandatory vaccination of all HCWs with two doses of measles-containing vaccine, appropriate post-exposure prophylaxis of immunocompromised inpatients, and stringent admission criteria for measles cases can contribute toward reduction of nosocomial and secondary transmission …

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background:
The first instances of HIV-antibody detection in donated blood in Pakistan were reported in 1988. Since then, documentation of HIV in blood donors and of rates of transmission via transfusion has been limited. Previously assumed to have a low prevalence, HIV is an increasing health concern in Pakistan. Since there is no national, centralized blood-banking system, there are no reliable data on which to base estimated risks of transfusion-associated HIV infection. This study was therefore conducted to estimate the prevalence of HIV in blood donors and recipients in Pakistan between 1988 and 2012.
Methods:
Meta-analyses were undertaken of reported …

Beauty As A Transcendental In The Thought Of Joseph Ratzinger, John Jang Jan 2015

Beauty As A Transcendental In The Thought Of Joseph Ratzinger, John Jang

Theses

This thesis aims to explore the method and content of Joseph Ratzinger’s aesthetics from a philosophical perspective. Ratzinger takes up Plato’s description of man’s encounter with beauty as a wounding by the power of eros, and argues that the involvement of emotion in this experience does not render it irrational, but rather, stresses that the feeling of beauty is in accordance with logos, since the domain of logos reaches far beyond abstract processes of reasoning. Moreover, Ratzinger rejects the notion that beauty is simply a cover over what is fundamentally ugly. According to Ratzinger, beauty is the foundation …
