Invasive Breast Cancer Incidence In 2,305,427 Screened Asymptomatic Women: Estimated Long Term Outcomes During Menopause Using A Systematic Review., Winnifred Cutler, Regula Bürki, James Kolter, Catherine Chambliss, Erika Friedmann, Kari Hart

PCOM Scholarly Works

BACKGROUND: Earlier studies of breast cancer, screening mammography, and mortality reduction may have inflated lifetime and long-term risk estimates for invasive breast cancer due to limitations in their data collection methods and interpretation.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the percentage of asymptomatic peri/postmenopausal women who will be diagnosed with a first invasive breast cancer over their next 25 years of life.

METHODS: A systematic review identified peer-reviewed published studies that: 1) enrolled no study participants with a history of invasive breast cancer; 2) specified the number of women enrolled; 3) reported the number of women diagnosed with a first invasive breast cancer; …

Crossing The Tracks, Keaton Suskie Jan 2015

Crossing The Tracks, Keaton Suskie

University Honors Theses

Substance abuse is a major issue all around the world. It is an issue that not only affects the abuser but also affects individuals and entire communities as well. Substance abuse is often glamorized in media and, though there are some cases where it is not, substance abuse is all too often misrepresented. The issue of adolescent substance abuse is virtually ignored or, at the very least, is underrepresented in media. In a few cases where adolescent substance abuse does play a role in media, it is rarely the central issue. More often than not, the issue of adolescent substance …

The Majorization Minimization Principle And Some Applications In Convex Optimization, Daniel Giles Jan 2015

The Majorization Minimization Principle And Some Applications In Convex Optimization, Daniel Giles

University Honors Theses

The majorization-minimization (MM) principle is an important tool for developing algorithms to solve optimization problems. This thesis is devoted to the study of the MM principle and applications to convex optimization. Based on some recent research articles, we present a survey on the principle that includes the geometric ideas behind the principle as well as its convergence results. Then we demonstrate some applications of the MM principle in solving the feasible point, closest point, support vector machine, and smallest intersecting ball problems, along with sample MATLAB code to implement each solution. The thesis also contains new results on effective algorithms …

Escaping Cascadia, Todd Albertson Jan 2015

Escaping Cascadia, Todd Albertson

University Honors Theses

The preface, "Dualism and Narrative Mode," details the development of realist techniques and then looks to current research to address the question, "In what other ways can realism be maximized within fiction?" It proposes a style combining second-person imperative narration for the viewpoint character’s actions and third-person free indirect discourse for description and internalization.

The introduction, "The Geography of the Future," explores prediction within select literary works, explains mitigation reactions to such predictions, and details current geographical projections to build a picture of what the future will look like and how humans will interact with their environment.

Escaping Cascadia is …

The Role Of Mitochondrial Superoxide Dismutase (Sod2) During A Coxiella Burnetii Infection, Rachel Diantha Champaigne Jan 2015

The Role Of Mitochondrial Superoxide Dismutase (Sod2) During A Coxiella Burnetii Infection, Rachel Diantha Champaigne

University Honors Theses

Coxiella burnetii is the etiological agent of acute Q fever and highly fatal chronic endocarditis in humans. It is an intracellular bacterial pathogen that initially invades macrophages and thrives within a lysosome-like parasitophorous vacuole by modifying host processes. Expression analyses of THP-1 cells (human monocyte/macrophage cell line) using RNA-seq show differential expression of several host genes in C. burnetii infected cells when compared to uninfected cells. Mitochondrial Superoxide Dismutase (SOD2) expression is highly upregulated (8x) during C. burnetii infection as opposed to uninfected cells, but it is unknown if this expression pattern is a host immune response to suppress Coxiella …

Evaluating The Success Of Forest Restoration, Josh Adams Jan 2015

Evaluating The Success Of Forest Restoration, Josh Adams

University Honors Theses

Forest restoration projects are occurring throughout the world. Restoration projects can vary greatly depending on the type of forest and the type of stressors that have caused ecosystem degradation and the need for restoration. Because of this variability, and because objective criteria for determining the success of restoration projects are lacking, it is difficult to evaluate the overall success of forest restoration projects. Using ecological standards developed for river restoration as a model, a similar set of standards was applied to forest restoration projects. The standards put forward can be used to evaluate the success of ecosystem restoration universally through …

Digitally Enhanced Classrooms: Understanding The Effect Of Individualized Technology On Language Arts Instruction In Elementary Schools, Celine De Clercq Jan 2015

Digitally Enhanced Classrooms: Understanding The Effect Of Individualized Technology On Language Arts Instruction In Elementary Schools, Celine De Clercq

University Honors Theses

The use of technology in elementary classroom settings has been increasing every year. Many schools already included computer classes; however, recently there has been a large move towards individualized, or 1:1, technology as well. We now find certain schools have acquired tablets and laptops for each student – fully integrating modern technology with traditional instruction. However, in the effort to keep up with the surge of technology, schools may be ignoring the need for professional development and curriculum planning to support technology as a tool that enhances student learning. While working in an “Apple Distinguished” school that provided individual tablets …

Avoiding Online Predators: Proactive Measures Companies Can Take To Protect Their Female Consumers, Alexandra Meneely Jan 2015

Avoiding Online Predators: Proactive Measures Companies Can Take To Protect Their Female Consumers, Alexandra Meneely

University Honors Theses

This study examines the implications of social discovery applications (apps) for the safety of their users and proposes proactive policies for firms to adopt to ensure greater safety. This report specifically focuses on female victims of technology-facilitated sexual violence and harassment on the basis that the research to date indicates that women and girls are disproportionately the victims of both sexual harassment and violence in offline contexts. Through an analysis of three cases of mobile app abuse, mobile industry security standards, and proactive versus reactive policies, the issues and alternatives are explored. This research draws on journal articles, market research …

Algeria In Perspective: Changing The Understanding Of The Modern Algerian State, Austin Averett Jan 2015

Algeria In Perspective: Changing The Understanding Of The Modern Algerian State, Austin Averett

University Honors Theses

Much of the existing literature on the modern state of Algeria reinforces rivalry-based understandings of the politico-linguistic infrastructure that overemphasize the presence of a dichotomy (French v. Arabic) in the linguistic make up of the state. Many studies rely on this construction of an Algerian language dichotomy to predict the future of the state, while; in fact, more attention should be paid to the multilingual, multicultural, and multinational reality of the larger demographic. Algeria’s history of language rationalization has laid the foundation for unique institutional reflections of state power dynamics within a multilingual environment. Discussions of Algeria’s historical background, identity …

Specializing In Normal: An Overview Of Midwifery In The Us, Lucille Tower Jan 2015

Specializing In Normal: An Overview Of Midwifery In The Us, Lucille Tower

University Honors Theses

There was a time when nearly every infant that came into this world was caught by the hands of a midwife. The rise of obstetrics in the 1800s drove midwifery to the margins, and in the US it is only in the last century that midwifery has reemerged as an organized profession, appearing everywhere from home births to hospital labor floors. Faced with a tradeoff between autonomy and credibility, midwifery branched into several pathways, with different educational requirements and scopes of practice. The formation of national organizations like the Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA) and the American College of …

At the grand debate of 1551 between Dr. Sepulveda and Las Casas, Las Casas presented a very modern view of human rights that is one of the useful models of human rights for the contemporary world.

Diversity, Inclusion And Organizational Citizenship Behaviours: A Study Of Nurses In The Irish Healthcare Sector, Deirdre O'Donovan Jan 2015

Diversity, Inclusion And Organizational Citizenship Behaviours: A Study Of Nurses In The Irish Healthcare Sector, Deirdre O'Donovan

PhDs

This thesis focuses on inclusion, national culture and Organizational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB) in the Irish healthcare sector. Due to the high number of migrant nurses employed in the sector, the level of understaffing and subsequent requirement for effective performance and behaviours, the Irish healthcare sector was chosen as the primnary focus for the research. In particular, the study draws on in-depth interviews undertaken with 37 nurses and midwives, from four cultures, currently employed in hospitals in Cork. Analysis of the interviews resulted in the identification of a number of findings. One significant finding concerns the identification of a set of …

The Effect Of 3d Collagen Scaffolds On Regulating Cellular Responses, Chad Simmons Jan 2015

The Effect Of 3d Collagen Scaffolds On Regulating Cellular Responses, Chad Simmons

Theses and Dissertations

Epithelial cells, as well as other differentiated cell types, remodel surrounding collagen in vitro, to self organize into 3D structures. When placed on-top or inside of a collagen hydrogel, cells organize into a toroid or spheroid form. It is not clearly understood how these cell types modulate surrounding collagen to form 3D shapes. The goal of this project was to determine if cell type, collagen type, or cell placement are factors that can alter how cells reorganize and remodel collagen hydrogels. We hypothesize that the positioning, cell type and the type of collagen they are in contact with affect the …

The Liberal Commercial Peace, Regional Considerations: International Relations Of Southeast Asia, Latin America, And The European Union Countries, Chienwu Hsueh Jan 2015

The Liberal Commercial Peace, Regional Considerations: International Relations Of Southeast Asia, Latin America, And The European Union Countries, Chienwu Hsueh

Theses and Dissertations

Most of the large-N empirical studies on the liberal commercial peace theory demonstrate that, in general, trade has a robust pacifying effect in reducing the probability of dyadical militarized interstate disputes. However, why trade’s pacifying effect varies across time and space remains a puzzle that previous research has not yet solved. The liberal commercial peace literature suggests the following questions are in need of answers: Why does trade promote peace mainly in inter-region dyads but not in intra-region dyads? What are the preconditions that make trade’s pacifying effect work or not work? In this research, I argue that there are …

Cameron Decomposition Applied To Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Signature Detection, Sean Wininger Jan 2015

Cameron Decomposition Applied To Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Signature Detection, Sean Wininger

Theses and Dissertations

Cameron et al, have developed a method of decomposing scatterer scattering matrices based on Huynen’s scattering matrix decomposition parameters. Huynen’s decomposition parameters are not unique, in that certain transformation properties, such as the angle of symmetry itself, may misidentify a scattering matriix and therefore misidentify a particular geometric shape. Cameron decomposition derives these parameters by direct calculations from the scatterer itself so that they may not be inferred or interpreted. A detailed explanation of the foundations and method of Cameron decomposition is presented here. A description of how Cameron decomposition is implemented in Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) signature detection …

Two Studies To Inform Comprehensive School Physical Activity Programming: A Systematic Review Of Program Effectiveness And The Development Of An Observational Measure For Classroom-Based Physical Activity Promotion, Laura B. Russ Jan 2015

Two Studies To Inform Comprehensive School Physical Activity Programming: A Systematic Review Of Program Effectiveness And The Development Of An Observational Measure For Classroom-Based Physical Activity Promotion, Laura B. Russ

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two studies pertaining to comprehensive school physical activity programs (CSPAP) that function in tandem to advance the knowledge base. The lack of an empirical basis for moving forward with CSPAP efforts and the lack of objective measures of CSPAP implementation are intertwined limitations currently stemming the potential for wide scale program adoption.

The purpose of Study 1 was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of multi-component PA interventions through schools that could be mapped onto at least two components of the CSPAP model. Electronic databases were searched to identify published studies that (1) occurred in …

Modeling And Computations Of Cellular Dynamics Using Complex-Fluid Models, Jia Zhao Jan 2015

Modeling And Computations Of Cellular Dynamics Using Complex-Fluid Models, Jia Zhao

Theses and Dissertations

Cells are fundamental units in all living organisms as all living organisms are made up of cells of different varieties. The study of cells is therefore an essential part of research in life science. Cells can be classified into two basic types: prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells. One typical organisms of prokaryotes is bacterium. And eukaryotes mainly consist of animal cells. In this thesis, we focus on developing predictive models mathematically to study bacteria colonies and animal cell mitotic dynamics.

Instead of living alone, bacteria usually survive in a biofilm, which is a microorganism where bacteria stick together by extracellular …

A Longitudinal Examination Of The Mediating Role Of Social Problem Solving Between Parental Attachment And Early Adolescents’ Life Satisfaction, Xu Jiang Jan 2015

A Longitudinal Examination Of The Mediating Role Of Social Problem Solving Between Parental Attachment And Early Adolescents’ Life Satisfaction, Xu Jiang

Theses and Dissertations

Both attachment theory and empirical evidence indicate that the quality of parental attachment profoundly influences many different aspects of adolescent life. However, one area that has been somewhat neglected in the literature is the discovery of the psychosocial mechanisms that account for the link between parental attachment and important adolescent developmental outcomes, such as social problem solving (D’Zurilla & Goldfried, 1971) and life satisfaction (LS: Diener, 1994). Driven by the conceptual framework of development of LS proposed by Evans (1994), Attachment Theory and Social Problem Solving Theory, a mediation model was hypothesized to explore the link between parental attachment and …

Neutrino And Antineutrino Induced Meson Production, Libo Jiang Jan 2015

Neutrino And Antineutrino Induced Meson Production, Libo Jiang

Theses and Dissertations

Coherent meson production measurement is very important in physics research. First, the coherent pion production is a potential background to v oscillation in next generation of Long Base Line Experiment(ELBNF/DUNE); second, coherent pion and coherent p production provide a detailed test of CVC and PCAC hypothesis; third, coherent meson production can be used to monitor the neutrino and anti-neutrino fluxes in the experiment. This dissertation focuses on two parts: coherent pi production in NOMAD, and coherent p simulation using LBNF fluxes. With the NOMAD data, the ratio between cross-sections of coherent pi- and v charged current interactions was measured and …
