Strategic Generation Bidding Using A Learning Algorithm Through Updates Of Supply Offer Selection Propensities, Sriram Raghavan, Jhi Young Joo Nov 2015

Strategic Generation Bidding Using A Learning Algorithm Through Updates Of Supply Offer Selection Propensities, Sriram Raghavan, Jhi Young Joo

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper discusses a novel bidding strategy of a generation company (genco) in an hourly day-Ahead market. In the proposed method, a genco learns the returns of supply offers and adapts its strategy, accordingly, based on the Variant Roth-Erev (VRE) reinforcement learning algorithm. Every supply offer submitted to the market receives a profit at the end of each day and is strategically updated for the next day based on this profit. The novelty of our proposed method is that every supply offer has a propensity (an inclination or a tendency) to be selected associated with it. The propensity is updated …

Assessing The Risk Of West Nile Virus On The Age 65 And Older Population Segments In Fort Collins, Colorado, Richard Cornell Nov 2015

Assessing The Risk Of West Nile Virus On The Age 65 And Older Population Segments In Fort Collins, Colorado, Richard Cornell

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

West Nile virus (WNV) is an arbovirus whose more severe, neurologic symptoms may include seizures, paralysis, or coma. Despite a variety of possible symptoms, most people do not realize they are infected with the virus with a majority of those infected not developing any symptoms. Members of the population aged 65 and older naturally experience reduced immunity to viruses as they get older. Exposure to West Nile virus can occur around one’s home, in a park, natural area, alongside a source of water, or even walking along a trail. Areas exist around town that present risks of being infected or …

Using Gis To Assess Species Distributions In The Pacific Northwest, Leslie Perry Nov 2015

Using Gis To Assess Species Distributions In The Pacific Northwest, Leslie Perry

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

A species distribution application was developed using ArcGIS (Model Builder) and Python to support management decisions and species reviews for the BLM and Forest Service in the Pacific Northwest. The application integrates observation data for flora and fauna species from agency geodatabases and available data on various environmental factors, such as ownership, land uses, and forest types. Results of the application include species-specific geodatabases containing observation data and combined observation-environmental data with tables presenting distribution information based on the environmental factors. These results are intended to provide baseline information about species distribution patterns and can be used for a variety …

The Relationship Between Social Networks, Exchange And Kids’ Food In Children’S Peer Culture, Stephanie Tillman Melton Nov 2015

The Relationship Between Social Networks, Exchange And Kids’ Food In Children’S Peer Culture, Stephanie Tillman Melton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates children’s peer culture, social networks and the role that kids’ food plays in peer exchanges during middle childhood. During this stage children develop social competencies as they join peer groups with other children and become socialized into children’s peer culture. In order to immerse myself within children’s culture, I conducted ethnographic fieldwork at two afterschool programs providing care for elementary school children. I investigated friendships, social networks and exchanges among third through fifth grade children at the programs. The study included participant observation and participatory group interviews with a sample of the children at both sites. The …

Word-Length Correlations And Memory In Large Texts: A Visibility Network Analysis, Lev Guzmán-Vargas, Bibiana Obregón-Quintana, Daniel Aguilar-Velázquez, Ricardo Hernández-Pérez, Larry S. Liebovitch Nov 2015

Word-Length Correlations And Memory In Large Texts: A Visibility Network Analysis, Lev Guzmán-Vargas, Bibiana Obregón-Quintana, Daniel Aguilar-Velázquez, Ricardo Hernández-Pérez, Larry S. Liebovitch

Publications and Research

We study the correlation properties of word lengths in large texts from 30 ebooks in the English language from the Gutenberg Project (www.gutenberg.org) using the natural visibility graph method (NVG). NVG converts a time series into a graph and then analyzes its graph properties. First, the original sequence of words is transformed into a sequence of values containing the length of each word, and then, it is integrated. Next, we apply the NVG to the integrated word-length series and construct the network. We show that the degree distribution of that network follows a power law, P(k)∼k−γP(k)∼k-γ, with two regimes, which …

Prognostic Indices For Hospitalized Older Adults: A Meta-Analysis And Systematic Review, Ariba Khan, Ayesha Maria, James Hocker, Maharaj Singh, Michelle Simpson

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Background: A prognostication predictive model incorporated into the electronic health record (EHR) may be useful in assisting the health care team in accurately predicting mortality and may be used in appropriately allocating palliative care services.

Purpose: To systematically review and summarize current medical literature regarding the factors predictive of mortality in an inpatient population above 65 years of age.

Methods: Nondisease-specific prognostication indices that predict 1-year mortality in an inpatient population of adults over age 65 were included. We excluded studies that estimated intensive care unit, disease-specific or in-hospital mortality. A MEDLINE, CINAHL, Ovid and Cochrane literature search of English-language …

Kenneth Burke Meets The Apostle Paul On The Road To Damascus: Mysticism Through Rhetorical Identification, William S. Elkins Nov 2015

Kenneth Burke Meets The Apostle Paul On The Road To Damascus: Mysticism Through Rhetorical Identification, William S. Elkins

Theses and Dissertations

The term “in Christ” is widely recognized within the Christian Church as a signature term of the Apostle Paul. But while the term is recognized as fundamental to his theology, occurring 180 times specifically and 300 times generally, functional usage is minimal. However, when the origin of the term is seen in its original context of the Damascus Road Event Encounter, the unique mystical nature of the term begins to come into focus. At that event the Messiah introduces Paul to a concept that much later (twentieth century) Kenneth Burke labels “identification,” who explains at length identification’s operational dynamics. My …

Imaging Thermal Conductivity With Nanoscale Resolution Using A Scanning Spin Probe, Abdelghani Laraoui, Halley Aycock-Rizzo, Yang Gao, Xi Lu, Elisa Riedo, Carlos A. Meriles Nov 2015

Imaging Thermal Conductivity With Nanoscale Resolution Using A Scanning Spin Probe, Abdelghani Laraoui, Halley Aycock-Rizzo, Yang Gao, Xi Lu, Elisa Riedo, Carlos A. Meriles

Advanced Science Research Center

The ability to probe nanoscale heat flow in a material is often limited by lack of spatial resolution. Here, we use a diamond-nanocrystal-hosted nitrogen-vacancy centre attached to the apex of a silicon thermal tip as a local temperature sensor. We apply an electrical current to heat up the tip and rely on the nitrogen vacancy to monitor the thermal changes the tip experiences as it is brought into contact with surfaces of varying thermal conductivity. By combining atomic force and confocal microscopy, we image phantom microstructures with nanoscale resolution, and attain excellent agreement between the thermal conductivity and topographic maps. …

Neurophysiological Activity Related To Speech Production: An Erp Investigation, Adithya Chandregowda Nov 2015

Neurophysiological Activity Related To Speech Production: An Erp Investigation, Adithya Chandregowda

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The event related potential (ERP) technique is enjoying widespread application in neurophysiological research due to its fine temporal resolution. Of relevance to this study are ERPs related to voluntary movements. The precision with which movement related processes could be recorded using the ERP technique was demonstrated by Gilden, Vaughan and Costa (1966) and Kutas and Donchin (1974, 1977, and 1980) who found that the readiness potential (RP) immediately preceding hand movement was larger over the hemisphere contralateral to the responding hand. Given that left hemisphere controls right hand movements and vice versa, their findings confirmed that the lateralized readiness potential …

Research Brief: "Military Service Absences And Family Members’ Mental Health: A Timeline Followback Assessment", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief examines mental health correlating with a parent's absence during a military deployment. The findings show that adolescents were affected by a military parent being absent from significant events, and that they would benefit from programs that offer pre and post-deployment briefings. In the future, research should investigate how contact during military deployment affects the service member and their family.

Deconstructing Data Governance, Steve Stockdale Nov 2015

Deconstructing Data Governance, Steve Stockdale

Posters and Presentations

Few institutional governance topics have garnered more attention and verbiage in the past two years as that of data (or information) governance. Thanks partly to the promotion of terms such as big data and eScience, more organizations — including academic institutions — are embracing the mantra that data are their second-most valuable asset (after people, of course). This suggests that beyond protection and security, data should be managed not as mere commodity but as a strategic asset. Data governance, then, is really about managing the behaviors of people, not bits. How can you derive an ROI — a Return On …

Improving Skills When Working With Challenging Behaviors: Get “Sneaky Smart”, Jeffery R. Craver Nov 2015

Improving Skills When Working With Challenging Behaviors: Get “Sneaky Smart”, Jeffery R. Craver

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

As we work to ensure that all children & youth are in a safe/secure environment where they feel special and can learn, it is humbling when we face challenging behaviors. There isn’t a definitive “guidebook” for educators and parents to turn to, thus making us hungry for more training in behavior management, especially proactive strategies. This presentation will help the participants to see that being “sneaky smart” is all about changing adult behavior, being flexible & willing to truly problem solve, and being more skilled at ways to alter the environment & the positive supports that we can put into …

Disproportionality In Special Education: Current Data And Recommendations, Jasolyn L. Henderson, Paula Freer

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

This presentation will focus on disproportionality in special education in Georgia over the last five years. We will describe what disproportionality is, how it is calculated, and the State Education Agency (SEA) and Local Education Agency (LEA) statutory requirements related to disproportionality determinations. In addition, disproportionality trend data over the last five years will be discussed. The presentation will also describe the initiatives that the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) is implementing to help reduce disproportionality across the state.

In Georgia and across the nation, disproportionality is oftentimes a symptom of ineffective educational policies, practices, and procedures. Reviewing the policies, …

Ikamva Youth: Field Research Analysis, Kate Lassalle-Klein, Jake Prince Nov 2015

Ikamva Youth: Field Research Analysis, Kate Lassalle-Klein, Jake Prince

Miller Center Fellowship

IkamvaYouth empowers South African students from under-resourced and under-performing secondary schools to achieve academic results competitive with those of the best-funded schools in the country. The organisation is able to offer extensive tutoring services free of charge due to the hard work of its committed volunteer tutors. As more students, called “learners,” flock to join the programme and IkamvaYouth grows, it faces challenges in attracting and maintaining an optimal amount of volunteer tutors.

We conducted a quantitative online survey of tutors’ demographic information, backgrounds, and experiences with the organisation. Of IkamvaYouth’s approximately 300 tutors, 223 responded. We conducted tutor and …
