Influence Of Jail Incarceration And Homelessness Patterns On Engagement In Hiv Care And Hiv Viral Suppression Among New York City Adults Living With Hiv/Aids, Sungwoo Lim, Denis Nash, Laura Hollod, Tiffany G. Harris, Mary Clare Lennon, Lorna E. Thorpe Nov 2015

Influence Of Jail Incarceration And Homelessness Patterns On Engagement In Hiv Care And Hiv Viral Suppression Among New York City Adults Living With Hiv/Aids, Sungwoo Lim, Denis Nash, Laura Hollod, Tiffany G. Harris, Mary Clare Lennon, Lorna E. Thorpe

Publications and Research

Objectives Both homelessness and incarceration are associated with housing instability, which in turn can disrupt continuity of HIV medical care. Yet, their impacts have not been systematically assessed among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Methods We studied a retrospective cohort of 1,698 New York City PLWHA with both jail incarceration and homelessness during 2001–05 to evaluate whether frequent transitions between jail incarceration and homelessness were associated with a lower likelihood of continuity of HIV care during a subsequent one-year follow-up period. Using matched jail, single-adult homeless shelter, and HIV registry data, we performed sequence analysis to identify trajectories of these …

Cortical Components Of Reaction-Time During Perceptual Decisions In Humans, Jacek P. Dmochowski, Anthony M. Norcia Nov 2015

Cortical Components Of Reaction-Time During Perceptual Decisions In Humans, Jacek P. Dmochowski, Anthony M. Norcia

Publications and Research

The mechanisms of perceptual decision-making are frequently studied through measurements of reaction time (RT). Classical sequential-sampling models (SSMs) of decision-making posit RT as the sum of non-overlapping sensory, evidence accumulation, and motor delays. In contrast, recent empirical evidence hints at a continuous-flow paradigm in which multiple motor plans evolve concurrently with the accumulation of sensory evidence. Here we employ a trial-to-trial reliability-based component analysis of encephalographic data acquired during a random-dot motion task to directly image continuous flow in the human brain. We identify three topographically distinct neural sources whose dynamics exhibit contemporaneous ramping to time-of-response, with the rate and …

The Birth Of The Federation: Origins Of The Russian Struggle For Democracy, Nikita V. Chirkov Nov 2015

The Birth Of The Federation: Origins Of The Russian Struggle For Democracy, Nikita V. Chirkov

Modern Languages & Literatures Honors Theses

Introduction

Boris Yeltsin and his trusted deputies gathered around the table. A big question was supposed to be decided that day: a question that would fundamentally change the course of a nuclear superpower for decades to come. The anxiety in the room was unbearable: some deputies wiped their sweat with napkins, others silently tapped their feet underneath the table, and the rest hid their eyes in the notebooks full of information that was already well memorized by everyone inside. At last, Boris Yeltsin stood up, took several long sips from the water bottle, placed it firmly on the desk beside …

Competing For Attention: A Comparative Study Of Social Movements And News Media In Abortion Debates, Katherine Eugene Lebreton Hunt Nov 2015

Competing For Attention: A Comparative Study Of Social Movements And News Media In Abortion Debates, Katherine Eugene Lebreton Hunt

Department of Political Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Why do some social movements in abortion debates get more attention from the news media than others? Do movements that support the status quo receive more attention than those opposing the status quo? Through quantitative content analysis of eight major newspapers in South Korea, Ireland, and Canada and fieldwork in South Korea and Ireland, I theorize that antistatus quo groups – whether they are for or against abortion rights – may reopen debate conditions in their countries by strategically using international human rights norms and frames and gaining standing in the news media in environments that tend to be hostile …

Comorbidity Of Learning Disorders And Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder In A Sample Of Omani Schoolchildren, Watfa S. Al-Mamari, Mahmoud M. Emam, Amna M. Kazem, Ali M.

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: The estimated worldwide prevalence of learning disorders (LDs) is approximately 2‒10% among school-aged children. LDs have variable clinical features and are often associated with other disorders. This study aimed to examine the comorbidity of LDs and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among a sample of schoolchildren in Oman. Methods: This study was conducted between January 2014 and January 2015 at the Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat, Oman. The Learning Disabilities Diagnostic Inventory (LDDI) and the 28-item version of the Conners’ Teacher Rating Scale was completed by classroom teachers to determine the existence of LD and ADHD symptoms in 321 children …

Suction Evacuation With Methotrexate As A Successful Treatment Modality For Caesarean Scar Pregnancies : Case Series, Sumita Datta, Chitra Jha

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Pregnancy resulting from the implantation of an embryo within a scar of a previous Caesarean section is extremely rare. The diagnosis and treatment of Caesarean scar pregnancies (CSPs) are challenging and the optimal course of treatment is still to be determined. We report a case series of six patients with CSPs who presented to the Royal Hospital in Muscat, Oman, between October 2012 and April 2014. All of the patients were successfully treated with systemic methotrexate and five patients underwent suction evacuation either before or after the methotrexate administration. The patients were followed up for a period of 6–9 weeks …

Hardships Of Scarcity: Microsociology On Poor People’S Survival Strategies In Everyday Life, Antonio Rosales Nov 2015

Hardships Of Scarcity: Microsociology On Poor People’S Survival Strategies In Everyday Life, Antonio Rosales

The Qualitative Report

Basic human rights are not met in many parts of the world. Hunger, ill-health, and poor education are often part of the lives of the poor. The purpose of this study is to understand poor people's sources of strength, social relations, sources of income, and perspectives as strategies to cope with poverty in everyday life. Data gathering was done through field observations and semi-structured interviews with poor and non-poor people in the Philippine town, Hagonoy. All data was codified according to recurrent and salient issues and analyzed using chiefly symbolic interactionism as the theoretical framework. The results of this study …

The Impact Of Technology-Enhanced Learning Activities On Nursing Student Engagement In The Classroom, Alicia A. Stone Nov 2015

The Impact Of Technology-Enhanced Learning Activities On Nursing Student Engagement In The Classroom, Alicia A. Stone

Theses & Dissertations

Educating student nurses in the present environment requires professors to stay current with new methodologies as well as innovations in technology. The question is how to address both the impact of technology and the skills of clinical reasoning, and keep the students involved in the material. If there can be integration of each aspect through the use of technology-enhanced learning activities on the internet and preparation to approach the issue, then perhaps this can increase success. This is a quasi-experimental intervention study that explored the impact of a case study blogging assignment on the engagement of students enrolled in a …

The Impact Of Pedagogical Agents' Conversational Formality On Learning And Learner Impressions, Haiying Li Nov 2015

The Impact Of Pedagogical Agents' Conversational Formality On Learning And Learner Impressions, Haiying Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The dissertation examined the impact of agents' conversational formality on the learning of summarization skills and learner impressions in an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) with trialogues (a teacher agent, a student agent, and a human learner). Formal language is in the informational genre (as opposed to narrative) and increases with word abstractness, syntactic complexity, referential cohesion, and deep cohesion. At the other end of the continuum, informal discourse tends to have concrete words, simple syntax, low cohesion (because knowledge-based inferences can fill the gaps), and high narrativity. There have been no experimental investigations that have maniputed teacher language because it …
