Computational Prediction Of Optimal Metal Ions To Induce Coordinated Polymerization Of Muscle-Like [C2]Daisy Chains, Yan-Ling Zhao, Rui-Qin Zhang, Christian Minot, Klaus Hermann, Michel A. Van Hove

Institute of Computational and Theoretical Studies

© the Owner Societies 2016. Recently, a muscle-like organometallic polymer has been successfully synthesized using Fe2+ as a linker atom. The polymer exhibits acid-base controllable muscle-like expansion and contraction on the micrometer scale. Further development could be facilitated by revealing the polymerization mechanism and by searching for optimal linker atoms. In this work, we have examined possible equilibrium and intermediate polymer structures, which consist of [c2]daisy chains linked by divalent transition metal ions (Sc2+, Ti2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+ or Zn2+) with various hexa-coordination arrangements, based on calculations using density functional theory. We find that the metal linkers in polymers are …

Berry Exotic: Alternative Therapies, Marissa Willimann Nov 2015

Berry Exotic: Alternative Therapies, Marissa Willimann

University Honors Program

Exotic berries are beginning to be investigated for their preventative properties such as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and hypocholesterolaemic levels. Berries consisting of these factors have been shown to reduce the risk for cardiovascular complications, acute or chronic diseases and other metabolic disease processes. These natural remedies are used to create a more holistic approach to medicine. The question raised is if the natural antioxidants and antiinflammatory properties that acaí, maqui, and blackthorn berries produce are more effective, less effective, or have no effect compared to medications that can be used. Research shows that reduction of glucose, total cholesterol and low density …

The Job Of Human Capital: What Occupational Data Reveal About Skill Sets, Economic Growth And Regional Competitiveness, Lillian Frances Stewart Nov 2015

The Job Of Human Capital: What Occupational Data Reveal About Skill Sets, Economic Growth And Regional Competitiveness, Lillian Frances Stewart

ETD Archive

A region's workforce has been described as its greatest asset. Guided by human capital theory and new growth theory, regions have pursued economic development policies to increase the number of college-educated workers and expand the pool of STEM -- science, technology, engineering, and math -- talent. Academic literature and policy interventions have focused on a region's human capital in terms of educational attainment instead of a more fine-grained definition of human capital based on skills and competencies. This dissertation integrates economic and business theory and combines three federal databases to explore regional human capital assets. Findings suggest that policymakers may …

Using A New Evidence-Based Health Workforce Innovation Research Framework To Compare Innovations In Community Health Center And Other Ambulatory Care Settings, Leah E. Masselink, Patricia Pittman, Claire Houterman Nov 2015

Using A New Evidence-Based Health Workforce Innovation Research Framework To Compare Innovations In Community Health Center And Other Ambulatory Care Settings, Leah E. Masselink, Patricia Pittman, Claire Houterman

Health Workforce Research Center Publications

In the United States, changing demographics, rising costs, and the impact of new regulations and payment models arising from the Affordable Care Act have placed unprecedented pressures on healthcare providers to increase access to care, improve quality and to control costs. To meet these challenges, some providers are forming accountable care organizations (ACOs) while others are pursuing medical homes or other novel payment and care delivery models designed to help meet these challenges. Within established organizations such as federally funded community health centers (CHCs), healthcare leaders are exercising significant latitude in developing innovative solutions for meeting their patients’ needs more …

When The Due Date Is Not The “Do” Date!, Theresa M. Mastrianni

Publications and Research

Our students consistently hand in assignments late, or complete them at the last minute. Why is it that they know about assignments all term long yet only begin them the night before the assignment is due? Based on a career-focused learning community at Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York, this article looks at ways to help our “millennial” students develop better time management skills. It shows how time management and prioritizing can be introduced as a tool for success in college and life and offers suggestions to better engage students in getting assignments done in a …

Monopsony Exploitation In Professional Sport: Evidence From Major League Baseball Position Players, 2000-2011, Brad R. Humphreys, Hyunwoong Pyun Nov 2015

Monopsony Exploitation In Professional Sport: Evidence From Major League Baseball Position Players, 2000-2011, Brad R. Humphreys, Hyunwoong Pyun

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Some professional athletes still face monoposony power in labor markets, underscoring the importance of estimating players' marginal revenue product (MRP) to assess its effects. We introduce two new empirical approaches, spline revenue functions and fixed-effects stochastic production functions, into the standard Scully (1974) approach to MRP estimation, and calculate Monoposony Exploitation Ratios (MERs) for position players in Major League Baseball over the 2001-2011 seasons. Estimates indicate that MERs are about 0.89 for rookie players, 0.75 for arbitration eligible players, and 0.21 for free agents. Recent collective bargaining agreements have reduced MERs for free agents, but had no effect on MERs …

“¡Ya Entiendo! Now I Understand!” Parents' Perceptions Of The Diagnosis Process And Early Intervention Services, Jenna Hudson Nov 2015

“¡Ya Entiendo! Now I Understand!” Parents' Perceptions Of The Diagnosis Process And Early Intervention Services, Jenna Hudson

Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Dissertations

This qualitative research study examined parents’ perceptions on the diagnosis process that identified their children as deaf or hard of hearing and the early-intervention services provided after the diagnosis. It explored how culture influenced the parental perception of information given to them and the ways in which their backgrounds swayed their individual reactions. As a convenience sample, the researcher conducted interviews with six families in the participants’ homes for ease and comfort. After each interview, an observation was conducted to collect data on the family’s interactions during leisure time, focusing on how the parents and their child communicated with one …

An Alternative For Alternatives: Designing A Teacher Licensure Program For Teacher-Led Schools, Tim J. Quealy Nov 2015

An Alternative For Alternatives: Designing A Teacher Licensure Program For Teacher-Led Schools, Tim J. Quealy

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The research question addressed in this project was, what are the essential components of an alternative licensure program designed to best prepare teachers for success in a teacher-led school? It documents the creation of a teacher preparation program designed specifically for the unique skills and knowledge sets required for a teacher to be successful in a teacher-led school setting. The research question was influenced by the researcher’s own experience, both as a product of a traditional teacher preparation program and as a teacher in a teacher-led school. To determine the essential components for the teacher preparation program, the capstone first …

Posner, Blackstone, And Prior Restraints On Speech, Ashutosh Bhagwat Nov 2015

Posner, Blackstone, And Prior Restraints On Speech, Ashutosh Bhagwat

BYU Law Review

Judge Richard Posner recently asserted that the original understanding of the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment was to prohibit “censorship”—meaning prior restraints—but not subsequent punishments. Posner was following in the footsteps of many other eminent jurists including Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., Joseph Story, James Wilson, and ultimately William Blackstone.

The problem is, this claim is simply wrong. Firstly, it misquotes Blackstone. Blackstone said that the liberty of the press meant only freedom from prior restraints; he never discussed speech. When one does examine the Speech Clause, it becomes quite clear that its protections cannot be limited to freedom …
