Predictors Of Relationship Dissolution In Lesbian, Gay, And Heterosexual Adoptive Parents, Abbie E. Goldberg, Randi L. Garcia
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Little work has examined relationship dissolution or divorce in adoptive parents or same-sex parent couples. The current study examined predictors of relationship dissolution across the first 5 years of parenthood among a sample of heterosexual, lesbian, and gay male adoptive couples. Of the 190 couples in the study, 15 (7.9%) dissolved their relationships during the first 5 years of adoptive parenthood. Specifically, 7 of 57 lesbian couples (12.3%), 1 of 49 gay male couples (2.0%), and 7 of 84 heterosexual couples (8.3%) dissolved their unions. Results of our logistic regression analysis revealed that the odds of relationship dissolution were significantly …

Evaluating Birding Tourism Markets In Nebraska, Joel G. Jorgensen, Mary Bomberger Brown, Lauren R. Dinan
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
In recent years, the number of non-consumptive (non-hunting, non-fishing) wildlife recreationists and their economic impact have increased in the United States. In 1996, surveys indicated there were more wildlife watchers than hunters and anglers combined (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Department of Commerce 1997). According to the National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation commissioned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, there were over 48 million birdwatchers age 16 or older in the United States in 2006 (Carver 2009), which was approximately 21 percent of the U.S. population at the time of the survey (La Rouch …

A Phenomenological Investigation Of The Lived Experiences Of African American Adults In Individual Mental Health Counseling, Jessica Martin
A Phenomenological Investigation Of The Lived Experiences Of African American Adults In Individual Mental Health Counseling, Jessica Martin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
African Americans continue to access non-emergency mental health care at a lower rate than White Americans, despite have equal risk for mental health issues. Currently, literature in counseling focuses on this deficit and why African Americans do not attend counseling, as opposed to those African Americans who do choose to go into counseling. The purpose of this heuristic phenomenological study was to investigate the lived experiences of adult African American mental health counseling clients. Two types of purposive sampling, criterion and snowball, were used to identify and recruit participants. Six African American women were selected for inclusion in this study. …

Regulating Urban Belonging: China's Hukou System As Intra-National Bordering Process, Leif Johnson
Theses and Dissertations--Geography
In China's urban metropoles, the hukou system of household registration regulates one of the largest movements of people in human history. While rural-urban migrations are reshaping societies worldwide, the migrants who make up a great portion of urban China's low-wage labor force and burgeoning population face unique legal and social challenges. Although the trajectories of their migration do not cross international boundaries, most are legally prevented from ever gaining the within China's hukou system of household registration. The functions of this system parallel those of national citizenship policies, and are difficult to explain through standard conceptions of sovereignty and national …

Communal Reflections: The Jewish Historical Society Of Staten Island Oral History Project, Amy F. Stempler
Publications and Research
The history of Jewish communities in New York has often cast a shadow over the history of other communities throughout the United States. Staten Island, though part of America’s largest Jewish city, has not received the scholarly attention awarded to Manhattan and the other outer boroughs. By the end of the twentieth century, Staten Island had the fastest growing Jewish community in New York City. Jews constituted 9 percent of the borough’s population, a higher proportion of the population than the number of Jews in all states outside of New York. Little is known about the community, especially its early …

Affirmative Action Within The Fire Service: The Background On The Law And Its Effect On The Fire Service And How Fire Department Policies Reflect The Affirmative Action Legislation., Steven Michael Stecher
Online Theses and Dissertations
This research studied ten full time fire departments in the United States to develop a quantitative study showing demographic make-up of the fire department rosters and the citizens in which they serve. Affirmative action has been a polarizing issue since the day the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed. Many thoughts and feelings had been researched but no quantitative studies could be found. This study asked three main questions. Are the fire departments being studied meeting the number requirements set forth by the law in relation to equal representation of the community serviced by the department? Are the departments’ …

Knee joint involves interactions from various structures such as cartilage, bone, muscles, ligaments, tendon, as well as neural control. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are one of the most frequent soft tissue injuries of the knee. A torn ACL leaves the joint unstable and at risk for further damage to other soft tissues manifested as pain, dislocation, and osteoarthritis. This injury is quite common in sports such as basketball, soccer and football. Females often tear their ACL 2-8 times more frequently than their male counterparts. An ACL injury can be devastating and significantly increases the athlete's risk for osteoarthritis long …
Nos1-Adaptor Protein Dysfunction In The Nucleus Tractus Solitarii Contributes To The Neurogenic Heart Damage And Qt Interval Prolongation, Neha Singh
Cellular and Molecular Biology
Variants of the Nitric Oxide Synthase 1 Adaptor Protein (NOS1AP) locus are strongly related to QT interval prolongation and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in human. Neurogenic cardiac damage due to subarachnoid hemorrhage, stroke, epilepsy and myocardial infarction is known to contribute to sudden death in most cases. Our aim was to study the role of NOS1AP in the neurogenic cardiac damage by silencing NOS1AP expression in the Nucleus Tractus Solitarii (NTS) area of the brainstem using lentiviral vector-mediated NOS1AP shRNA (Lv-NOS1AP-shRNA). Real time PCR data showed NOS1AP mRNA levels were expressed in the NTS 3-fold higher than other organs such …

After the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Windsor, which declared the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) unconstitutional, and after the granting of certiorari in Obergell v. Hodges, where the Supreme Court will decide whether the Fourteenth Amendment requires states to provide a marriage license to same-sex couples, national marriage equality seems like a legal inevitability. However, Windsor and Obergell, along with other state-level advances toward marriage equality, are not equally promising for all members of the lesbian and gay community. Although Windsor and the revolution of cases that have led to Obergell hold significant promise for one privileged subset …

Methods Of Suicide By Women In Ireland 1980-2009, Raegan Murphy, Siobhan O'Connor
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
Irish female methods of suicide from 1980 till 2009 were investigated in order to determine the likelihood of the method of suicide as determined by decade as well as the age at death. Secondary data analysis was conducted on the National Suicide Research Foundation (NSRF) dataset. Multinomial logistic regression was used to compare methods of suicide using odds ratios. Log-linear analysis was conducted in order to investigate possible interactions between the variables. A stepwise backward elimination procedure determined the most parsimonious model to account for the observed frequencies. Follow-up chi-square analyses were conducted on the three-way interaction in order to …
Secure-Base Caregiving And Adult Attachment Development Within The Client-Psychotherapist Relationship, Dennis A. Weeks
Secure-Base Caregiving And Adult Attachment Development Within The Client-Psychotherapist Relationship, Dennis A. Weeks
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Recent studies have shown significant improvements in the attachment security of adult therapy clients during therapy, supporting Bowlby's theory that such improvement can be influenced by secure-base caregiving provided by mentors such as therapists. However, because these studies did not measure the secure-base variable, its relationship to client attachment development remains unknown. The present study is the first to evaluate that relationship by measuring clients' pre and posttherapy attachment security using the Relationship Scales Questionnaire and therapists' secure-base caregiving using the Client Attachment to Therapist and Working Alliance Inventory, Short Form. Of 21 initially insecure client participants, 17 experienced high …

Spousal-Differences In Perception Of Female Autonomy In Household Decision-Making In Nepal, Sharmistha Self
Spousal-Differences In Perception Of Female Autonomy In Household Decision-Making In Nepal, Sharmistha Self
Development Journal of the South
The primary objective of this paper is to see how spouses differ in terms of their perception of female autonomy in household decision-making in Nepal and the factors that influence these perceptions. Understanding the perception of female autonomy is important in general but particularly so for developing countries with traditional male-dominated and well-defined patriarchal roles in society. In general, the results seem to converge between men and women when it comes to perception of female autonomy in non-economic decision making but not when it relates to decision-making in economic matters. The results have important policy implications.

The Reproductive Biology Of The Finetooth Shark, Carcharhinus Isodon, In The Northwest Atlantic Ocean, Amanda N. Brown
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Shark fisheries are a multimillion dollar industry in the United States and have significant contributions both recreationally and commercially. In order to maintain this industry, fisheries must be properly managed. An understanding of life history and reproduction is crucial in order to adequately manage shark fisheries. The finetooth shark, Carcharhinus isodon, is a member of the small coastal shark (SCS) fishery complex. It is found in Atlantic waters from South Carolina to Florida and throughout the Gulf of Mexico. This species has recently come under increased fishing pressure and has previously been overfished. New data is needed in order …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Understanding the interplay between exploitation and natural mortality is essential to guiding sustainable conservation of wildlife. Exploitation of carnivores by humans has long been thought to result in compensatory reductions of natural mortality among survivors. If rates of human exploitation exceed natural mortality, however, such actions will ‘add’ to overall mortality and could imperil the sustainability of such actions. We applied competing risk analyses to >/= 16 years of data for heavily harvested and semi-protected cougar populations in Utah to test the additive and compensatory mortality hypotheses, while accounting for parameter uncertainty. We additionally tested for presence of the two …

Paleodemography Of Highland Beach The Demographic Parameters Of A Native American Population From Southeastern Florida, Christopher Hennessey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Those who practice within the field and those who wish to discredit the field have long debated the field of paleodemography. In 1999 and again in 2000, researchers who used paleodemographic analysis assembled in Rostock, Germany to amend the present issues and change the way research is conducted in the future (Hoppa and Vaupel 2002). As a result of these meetings, researchers created the Rostock Manifesto. While many scholars accepted the change in the suite of methodologies carried out under the new guidance, little has been said on the effectiveness of the manifesto. In this thesis, I argue that the …
