An Analysis Of Afterschool Programs In The United States, Caroline Jeter May 2015

An Analysis Of Afterschool Programs In The United States, Caroline Jeter

Senior Theses

This study shows the effectiveness of afterschool programs in the United States. The beginning of this paper shows why afterschool programs have not been effective in academic improvement. It then leads to the conclusion that now we know what our goals are to achieve better results in academics. This is proven through multiple specific examples of improving academic achievement, establishing positive relationships, and exploring individual goals. My project describes specific afterschool programs and how they may achieve these goals in an effective way. In addition, my research cites statistics and quotes from teachers and students who have been a part …

From The Lab To The Supermarket: In Vitro Meat As A Viable Alternative To Traditional Meat Production, Trae Norton May 2015

From The Lab To The Supermarket: In Vitro Meat As A Viable Alternative To Traditional Meat Production, Trae Norton

Journal of Food Law & Policy

In 1932, Winston Churchill predicted that 50 years in the future "we shall escape the absurdity of growing a whole chicken in order to eat the breast or wing by growing these parts separately under a suitable medium." Although Churchill's prediction is about 30 years off, in August of 2013, the first ever meat patty grown in vitro was consumed in London, England. With this historic scientific achievement, many are predicting that in vitro meat will be a viable solution to the problems associated with industrial meat production, such as animal cruelty, inefficient natural resource consumption, and pollution. Analysts predict …

Manipulating The Mass Distribution Of A Golf Putter, Paul J. Hessler Jr. May 2015

Manipulating The Mass Distribution Of A Golf Putter, Paul J. Hessler Jr.

Senior Honors Projects

Putting may appear to be the easiest but is actually the most technically challenging part of the game of golf. The ideal putting stroke will remain parallel to its desired trajectory both in the reverse and forward direction when the putter head is within six inches of the ball. Deviation from this concept will cause a cut or sidespin on the ball that will affect the path the ball will travel.

Club design plays a large part in how well a player will be able to achieve a straight back and straight through club head path near impact; specifically the …

Anime: Fortress Of Solitude Or Kryptonite?, Oscar King Iv May 2015

Anime: Fortress Of Solitude Or Kryptonite?, Oscar King Iv

Honors Thesis

Anime is a complex medium that is expanding at a rapid rate on a global scale. It inspires fandoms, some of which unbelievably tenacious. My research explored scholarship concerning anime fans and asked the question: Why does anime in particular seem to create hyper-obsessed fans? I consulted fandom studies, pop culture scholarship, and sources regarding the anime medium as a whole.

The results of my study suggested that anime, at its extremes, functions in some capacity as a modern fairy tale genre. It allows a viewer to vicariously experience life through the screen, engaging with the animated characters in a …

Saving Sex Slaves: The A21 Campaign And The Mobilization Of Christian Affect, Nicole Elizabeth Magee May 2015

Saving Sex Slaves: The A21 Campaign And The Mobilization Of Christian Affect, Nicole Elizabeth Magee

Master's Theses

In this thesis, I argue that the A21 Campaign’s discourse mobilizes Christian affect to produce relational proximity between audience members and human trafficking victims. My study intervenes in related literature surrounding Burke’s (1969) idea of identification by acknowledging that discourse can invite audiences to feel relationally close to or empathetic with others in the absence of consubstantiation. Relying on Gould’s (2009) notion of the mobilization of affect, I contend that unconscious, Christian affective investments are mobilized within A21’s rhetoric through the covert deployment of evangelical tropes that register with Christians’ affective desires and encourage believers to act as Christ or …

A Few Good Men And Women : The Rhetorical Constitution Of Military Personnel Identity., Ashly Bender Smith May 2015

A Few Good Men And Women : The Rhetorical Constitution Of Military Personnel Identity., Ashly Bender Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I examine the public negotiation of service member identity by multiple stakeholders as a way to better understand the available rhetorical strategies for affecting ideological constructions of identity. While current Rhetoric and Composition research attends mostly to student-veterans, I draw on cultural and rhetorical theorists, such as Louis Althusser, Kenneth Burke, Maurice Charland, to identify the rhetorical approaches used to construct military personnel identity, particularly in the post-9/11 era. Through analysis of films, recruiting materials, and the publicly-shared stories of personnel, I extend current understandings of constitutive rhetoric and rhetorical identification—which tend to focus on the work …

Lindenwood Students’ Cultural Domain Of Female Beauty, Courtney Cox May 2015

Lindenwood Students’ Cultural Domain Of Female Beauty, Courtney Cox

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

In this study, the shared cultural domain of female physical beauty on the Lindenwood campus was identified. A cultural domain is essentially, “things that somehow go together” (Bernard 2006, p. 299). The domain is established by systematic use of free lists, a method in which participants list all of the attributes that they can in response to a prompt. A written free list method was selected so that a large group of students could provide their data in a quick and anonymous manner. In this case, the domain of interest was “attributes that are physically beautiful in women.” After providing …

Approaching Communication With Marx: On The Symbolic Reproduction Of Social Relations, Shannon K. Jacobs May 2015

Approaching Communication With Marx: On The Symbolic Reproduction Of Social Relations, Shannon K. Jacobs

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This critical examination approaches communication with Marx to uncover the implications of the symbolic reproduction of social relations. The social reproduction of the past is characterized through an onset of parallel themes that run with depictions of the experience of people. Marxist inspired critical research illustrates the perpetuation of the internalization and normalization of ideological principles of the social sphere. Significance emerges from the dialectical questioning of the values and principles of the social. Overall, this collective reflection demonstrates the importance of the critical aspect in the current discussion of the dynamics of the social sphere.

Performance Sports: An Excuse For Doping?, Vladislav V. Loenko May 2015

Performance Sports: An Excuse For Doping?, Vladislav V. Loenko

Business/Business Administration

The objective of this study is to determine what characteristics in high performance athletes are likely to create a desire to use a doping substance. After reviewing the works of notable scholars addressing similar concerns, research has helped to identify some of the prominent factors liable for this manifesto. This paper focuses on psychological determinants within highly competitive individuals, specifically those who have a predisposed desire for achievement, which correspond with a higher propensity to use performance-enhancing drugs. In order to effectively assess the findings for this hypothesis, its application is strictly devoted to performance sports.

A Journey Of Tears: What They Don't Tell You About America, A Memoir, Nilufer Gokmen

Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones

This capstone project explores different themes ranging from bureaucracy to suburban life, from popularity of guns in the South to suburban life and metal fandom, both borrowing ideas from scholars who have done research on these subjects before as well as employing different experiences of mine as an international student, trying to survive in a country where international students are not much welcomed in practise. Comparing my own experiences with other people's experiences, especially with those who are from other Middle Eastern countries, this project aims to show how life can be hard for foreign students, and how little Americans …

Siren Song: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Gender And Intimate Partner Violence In Gotham City Sirens, Katlin Schmidt May 2015

Siren Song: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Gender And Intimate Partner Violence In Gotham City Sirens, Katlin Schmidt

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This project investigates comic book discourse. Specifically, I investigate how comic narratives provide readers with an interpretation for how they should discern and assess “appropriate” behaviors for women. The artifact of analysis included in this project is DC Comics Gotham City Sirens (2009). This text features popular female superheroes, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy. Because comic books utilize both textual and visual means to disseminate a message, this project evaluates the visual rhetoric of these characters within the narrative. Walter Fisher’s narrative paradigm is used to provide an understanding to how these visual means contribute to the meanings assigned …

Becoming All Things To All Men: The Role Of Jesuit Missions In Early Modern Globalization, Ann Louise Cole May 2015

Becoming All Things To All Men: The Role Of Jesuit Missions In Early Modern Globalization, Ann Louise Cole

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

From its founding, the Society of Jesus was globally minded, and Iberian imperial and mercantile expansion during the early modern period granted Jesuit missionaries unprecedented access to the globe through navigation. With its unique emphasis on both global missions and pedagogy, the Society of Jesus was in an ideal position to both generate and disseminate knowledge about the world. As missionaries scattered across the globe constructed the identity of the ethnic and cultural Other encountered on mission in the East and in Latin America, Jesuit missionaries and scholars, both at home and abroad, likewise attempted to construct a global Catholic …

Stand Strong, Stand Proud: Alternative And Pariah Femininities In San Diego's Punk Rock Community, Steve Moog May 2015

Stand Strong, Stand Proud: Alternative And Pariah Femininities In San Diego's Punk Rock Community, Steve Moog

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since its inception nearly 40 years ago, punk rock has often been understood as a Social space for rebellion and resistance to dominant cultural norms. As such, punk rock culture becomes fertile ground for explorations of subversive constructions of genders. Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork conducted in the San Diego punk rock community, this thesis unpacks the construction, embodiment and enactment of alternative and pariah forms of femininities and examines their impact on gender dynamics within the scene. Ultimately, this thesis argues that (1) the San Diego punk rock community is a space where alternative and pariah femininities can be embodied …

Middle Power Music: Modernism, Ideology, And Compromise In English Canadian Cold War Composition, Sarah Feltham May 2015

Middle Power Music: Modernism, Ideology, And Compromise In English Canadian Cold War Composition, Sarah Feltham

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation argues that English Canadian composers of the Cold War period produced works that function as “middle power music.†The concept of middlepowerhood, central to Canadian policy and foreign relations in this period, has been characterized by John W. Holmes as “a way of explaining to the world that Canadians were of greater consequence than the Panamanians but could not take on the obligations of the Americans, or even the French.†Political scientist Adam Chapnick has noted that it is paradoxically through acceptance of a second-tier position that Canadian political leaders sought increased international status and means of resistance …

Fashioning Revolutionary Women In Cold War America: Women And Violence In The Black Panther Party, Weather Underground, And Radical Feminist Organizations, 1968-1981, Choonib Lee

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation examines the interrelated relationship of women, violence, and feminism in those groups who either advocated or were associated with violent revolt in the late 1960s and 1970s, especially women in the Black Panther Party (BPP) and Weather Underground (WU). It addresses an important issue that has been overlooked in previous histories of second-wave feminism: the meaning of liberation for women involved with violent activism during the Vietnam War era. In general terms, women’s entanglements with violent activism have been viewed by feminists, as well as by many historians, as macho, and thus at odds with feminism, which is …

On The Divide: Examining Residential Segregation In Marin County, California, Felicia Burgess May 2015

On The Divide: Examining Residential Segregation In Marin County, California, Felicia Burgess

Senior Theses

Today, segregation is a term rarely used or heard in public discourse, as it has been illegal in the U.S for the past 50 years. However, despite its illegalization, scholars and sociologists have noted that patterns of segregation are still a prominent feature of many U.S counties, cities and suburbs. Reflecting upon my experiences as a black woman living in an all-white community, this paper offers a critical analysis of the causes and consequences of residential segregation in Marin County, California: a county of urban and suburban communities just 20 minutes north of San Francisco. Despite its liberal image, Marin …

Appalachian Studies As An Academic And Activist Field, 1970-1982, Emily Booker May 2015

Appalachian Studies As An Academic And Activist Field, 1970-1982, Emily Booker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the formation of Appalachian studies as an academic field from roughly 1970 to 1982. First, this thesis analyses regionalism and what defines a region, focusing on the different contexts and narratives through which Appalachia has been described. Second, this thesis examines how scholars and activists in the region challenged prevailing narratives and sought new ways to examine and contextualize the region. Efforts to challenge stereotypes and address the social, political, and economic problems of the region galvanized academics and activists alike. Despite their similar work and shared vision for an interdisciplinary regional field, academics and activists often …

Bioecological Exchange Theory: Trading Resources For Childcare In Mate Selection, Katherine A. Valentine May 2015

Bioecological Exchange Theory: Trading Resources For Childcare In Mate Selection, Katherine A. Valentine

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Bioecological exchange theory is proposed, which resolves contradictions between sexual strategies theory and social role theory. People are hypothesized to flexibly shift their mate preferences in response to the percentage of resources they can provide within a couple, but not limitlessly. Men are hypothesized to facultatively shift between 25-100% of provisioning and women from 0-75% of provisioning, as seen in foragers. Both sexes are then hypothesized to trade provisioning for a reciprocal amount of childcare in a partner. Study 1 uses a sample of undergraduate Singaporean women (n = 197) to demonstrate that the more women expect to contribute to …

Work Across The Generations: Communication Narratives Of Stay-At-Home Fathers In Early And Middle Adulthood, Alice L. Jones May 2015

Work Across The Generations: Communication Narratives Of Stay-At-Home Fathers In Early And Middle Adulthood, Alice L. Jones

Communication & Theatre Arts Theses

The notion of work whether it is done inside or outside the home represents a complex and shifting pattern of social relationships, gender role identities, and ideologies. For an increasing numbers of men, who represent the population of fathers labeled as "stay-at-Home Dad" [SAHD] or "stay-at-home father" [SAHF], these changes have created special challenges, controversies, and raised questions about cultural expectations concerning the transition from that of a stigmatized role to that of a "new, involved father" (Eranta & Moisander, 2011; Rochlen, 2008). Increased participation by men in roles that challenge traditional and long standing gender role norms and expectations …

Pairing Poetry With Nonfiction To Teach The Civil Rights Movement: A Unit Plan For High School English Teachers, Andrea Spencer

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

It was just after lunch, and my students wrote in sleepy silence. Their heads were close to the desks; some had even given in and their heads rested on their left arms as they wrote slowly. When the timer beeped, my students looked up and took a collective breath; they expected me to ask for volunteers to share their writing, and they fidgeted in their blue-seated desks.

The Role Of Oxidative Stress In The Rotenone Model Lymnaea Stagnalis, Homero L. Cantu May 2015

The Role Of Oxidative Stress In The Rotenone Model Lymnaea Stagnalis, Homero L. Cantu

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the most common neurodegenerative movement disorder, characterized by progressive depletion of dopamine (DA). Rotenone, a common pesticide, can induce PD like symptoms in animal models. The goal of this thesis is to quantify the levels and effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in brain tissue of the common neurobiological gastropod model, Lymnaea stagnalis, after treatment with Rotenone. The results show that rotenone causes a behavioral deficit and increases ROS production, especially superoxide. Furthermore, glutathione was depleted and protein carbonyl formation increased. These results are consistent with findings in human PD and the high levels of ROS …

Mitochondrial Dysfunction And Loss Of Glutamate Uptake In Primary Astrocytes Exposed To Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles, Christina L. Wilson May 2015

Mitochondrial Dysfunction And Loss Of Glutamate Uptake In Primary Astrocytes Exposed To Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles, Christina L. Wilson

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The proper function of astrocytes is critical for brain health as they are the most abundant cells in the brain which monitor ion homeostasis, recycle neurotransmitters and respond to tissue damage therefore disruption in astrocyte function can result in overall detrimental effects and has been linked with neurodegenerative diseases. Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles are currently the second most produced engineered nanomaterial in the world with vast usage in consumer products leading to recurrent human exposure. Animal studies indicate significant nanoparticle accumulation in the brain while cellular toxicity studies demonstrate negative effects on neuronal cell viability and function. However, …

The Bioarchaeology Of Social Order: Cooperation And Conflict Among The Mimbres (Ad 550-1300), Kathryn Mary Baustian May 2015

The Bioarchaeology Of Social Order: Cooperation And Conflict Among The Mimbres (Ad 550-1300), Kathryn Mary Baustian

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Interpersonal conflict, social control, and culturally sanctioned violence are all potential modes of effecting change amongst most human groups. This research investigates the complex relationship between interpersonal violence, human skeletal biology, and social identity among prehistoric agricultural communities in the American Southwest. Using bioarchaeology as a research framework, the data presented in this study reveal patterns that can be used to better understand how violence is utilized or avoided in any time period. Bioarchaeology is well suited to investigate violence because it integrates the most direct evidence of conflict (traumatic skeletal injury) with detailed archaeological reconstructions of past human experiences. …
