On The Validity And Reliability Of The Computerized Memory Interference Test For Primary Spanish-Speaking Individuals, Reneh Karamians

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, the Computerized Memory Interference Test (CMIT), a derivative of the Picture Memory Interference Test (PMIT) was assessed for reliability, validity and internal consistency with a primary Spanish-speaking sample. Five hypotheses were formulated and tested. For the first hypothesis correlational studies assessing relationships between the CMIT scores and those of the WMS-III, Visual Reproduction subtests were used to establish convergent validity. Hypotheses two and three, produced correlational studies to assess relationships between the CMIT scores and those of the RAVLT and WAIS-III Block Design, Vocabulary and Matrix Resonating subtests. To test the fourth hypothesis, known-group methods were used …

Apology As A Leadership Behavior: A Meta-Analysis With Implications For Organizational Leaders, Matthew W. Brubaker Jan 2015

Apology As A Leadership Behavior: A Meta-Analysis With Implications For Organizational Leaders, Matthew W. Brubaker

Theses and Dissertations

Leaders are frequently called to apologize on behalf of their organizations, in some cases skillfully resolving episodes of failure while meeting the unique, competing needs of diverse stakeholders. However, too often leaders handle apology poorly, exacerbating tense situations and alienating key constituents. This study is an examination of the practice of apology as a leadership behavior in an organizational context. To answer the question, How might the existing literatures on apology be examined, integrated and refocused to apply specifically to leaders operating within an organizational context? the study provides a meta-analysis of the diverse literatures that address the practice of …

Exploring The Use Of Online Sexually Explicit Material: What Is The Relationship To Sexual Coercion?, Valerie M. Gonsalves, Heath Hodges, Mario Scalora

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

With the popularity of the Internet, it is easy to access online sexually explicit material (OSEM). However, little is known about the possible relationship that viewing OSEM may have to sexually coercive behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the viewing habits of OSEM related to self-reported sexual aggression. Results indicated that individuals who identified as having engaged in sexually aggressive behavior endorsed more online sexually compulsive behaviors. Analyses revealed that the amount, as opposed to the type, of OSEM viewed appears to be more related to adverse outcomes. Additionally, sexually aggressive individuals reported viewing a greater …

Confronting The Illusion Of Technological Expertise Among College And University Students, Barbara Kolan, Joanne Mcneish Jan 2015

Confronting The Illusion Of Technological Expertise Among College And University Students, Barbara Kolan, Joanne Mcneish

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

Over the past 20 years, the faculty and administration of colleges and universities have been debating how technology will change the face of higher education in delivering content to students. Associated with the discussion is research on the acceptability of various devices (e.g. desk-top computers, laptop computers, e-readers, tablets) as replacements for paper textbooks. In most studies, students report their preference for paper textbooks over digital materials for studying and learning. A recent Canadian study examined the preference for paper textbooks. In this study, we repeat key areas of that study with Israeli students and collect comparison data using an …

Moving Past: Making Space For Memory After The Boston Marathon Bombing, Austin Thomas Jacobs Jan 2015

Moving Past: Making Space For Memory After The Boston Marathon Bombing, Austin Thomas Jacobs

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

In the aftermath of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, visitors from across the US and the world descended on Boston to pay their respects to the three people who were killed and the more than 260 who were injured at the race's finish line. The public commemorated the tragedy in multiple and diffuse spaces, both physical and virtual. In recognition of this fact, I use the changing location of the spontaneous shrine as an organizing structure for this study, analyzing the memorialization in three "movements,” each of which corresponds to a physical relocation of the shrine itself in the weeks …

The Mariner’S Way Of Individuation: An Insight Into The Jungian Principle Of Acausality, Parisa Shams, Farideh Pourgiv Jan 2015

The Mariner’S Way Of Individuation: An Insight Into The Jungian Principle Of Acausality, Parisa Shams, Farideh Pourgiv

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

As a Romantic poet who was especially interested in the workings of the mind, Coleridge, in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, has dealt with notions, ideas, and images that lend themselves to a Jungian reading, specifically from the perspective of the principle of synchronicity which is to be the focus of this analysis. The theory of synchronicity, being the principle explaining the concurrence of psychic states and external events which bear no causal relationship, could be employed to bring up a novel interpretation of the poem. The causally unrelated but meaningful succession of events in the course of the …

The case study method employed in this dissertation allowed the opportunity to assess the progress of the issue of peace and development as it occurs across the region. This study tests the development outcome of a number of cases in light of the Millennium …

Black Voices, White Power: Members Of The Black Press Make Meaning Of Media Hegemony, Robert Redding Jr. Jan 2015

Black Voices, White Power: Members Of The Black Press Make Meaning Of Media Hegemony, Robert Redding Jr.

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

When a former black editor says he was told that blacks do not care about news by his white boss and a black deejay is told that his commentary is too hard hitting and not to go to an event featuring a black militant leader by his white boss, these personal accounts could be extrapolated to mean that there may still be a world filled with white privilege and an ensuing hegemonic bifurcation in a Communication Studies context. This study utilizes Afrocentricity and the agency that is denied to these two individuals to provide insight into a world where these …

Preaching As A Cultural Formation Tool, Jason P. Esposito

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem addressed by this project is a lack of awareness some pastors have of the power their preaching has to shape their church culture. In response to this problem the researcher explored the biblical foundations of preaching with a special interest in the Hebrew understanding of learning and its role as a culture creator. He reviewed literature related to homiletics and communication theory with special attention to cultural formation in organizations and churches. He conducted case studies by way of interviews to determine whether members of his church, Crossway, perceived this connection between preaching and cultural formation. He interviewed …

Appearing Otherwise: Changing Alice Into The Woman Of Wonderland, Emily R. Aguiló-Pérez Jan 2015

Appearing Otherwise: Changing Alice Into The Woman Of Wonderland, Emily R. Aguiló-Pérez

English Faculty Publications

In Chapter IX of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (hereafter abbreviated as AAW) Alice receives yet another piece of advice, this time from The Duchess, who tells her “be what you would seem to be” to others (Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland 93). Being what others want you to be does not sound like the best advice a little girl can receive, yet the truth is that The Duchess is not so far from Alice’s reality. Looking at numerous previous adaptations of Carroll’s books it becomes evident that the character Alice has been changed several times and transformed into different …

"I'M Not Talking To Myself, I'M Having A Parent-Teacher Conference!": A Study Of Literacy Practices And Mediation Within Homeschooling Families, Joshua Corlew

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Homeschooling is a dynamic learning and living community producing a growing percentage of our nation*s college-ready students. Serious academic studies of homeschooling remain scarce, and those that exist tend to come out of sociology and anthropology. Through an analysis of the literacy practices that constitute the work of homeschooling, this study offers findings and conclusions relevant to current discourses in the fields of literacy studies and rhetoric and composition. These include discussions on the ways technology is reshaping and individualizing traditional models of literacy learning and composing, as well as the growing research on the specific actions taken by literacy …

Eating Spain: National Cuisine Since 1900, Matthew J. Wild

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

Analyzing cookbooks, gastronomic guides, literature and film, this dissertationoutlines the creation of a Spanish national cuisine. Studying the works of Carmen de Burgos, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Dionisio Pérez, Ana María Herrera, Juan Mari Arzak and Ferrán Adrià among others, the project examines the evolution of this nationalist discourse by identifying common and recurring themes in an effort to extrapolate and describe the historical and cultural evolution of food from 1900 to the present day.

Within the framework of Food and Cultural Studies, this project treats cookbooks, culinary manifestos and guidebooks as texts. Influenced by a variety of culinary and gastronomic …

Parent Development And Wellbeing During The Launching Stage Of Parenthood, Deborah F. Keys Jan 2015

Parent Development And Wellbeing During The Launching Stage Of Parenthood, Deborah F. Keys

Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences

At the present time, the young adult transition into adulthood has been extended, which has also extended the launching stage. One result of the extended launching stage is that parents are now involved in active parenting longer than before. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of the extended launching stage in key areas (the parent- child relationship and parent support) on parental emotional wellbeing. The contribution of this research is that it adds to the limited body of knowledge about normative launching stage parenting practices and outcomes. This dissertation is a three chapter manuscript that uses …

Imperatives In Informal Organizational Resource Exchange In Central Europe, David Jancsics Jan 2015

Imperatives In Informal Organizational Resource Exchange In Central Europe, David Jancsics

Publications and Research

This paper challenges the mainstream social scientific approach that emphasizes “moral inferiority” in corruption and bribery in Central and Eastern Europe. We argue that in many cases, people participate in informal organizational resource exchanges not because of immorality or greed but rather because of powerful external forces. By using the case of contemporary Hungary to support this argument, this paper provides a systematic analysis of such imperatives. The findings of 50 in-depth qualitative interviews suggest that two main imperatives can be distinguished; macro-level social and meso-level organizational forces. Macro-level forces may be linked to historical paths, Hungary's socialist and pre- …

Assessing Western Australian Year 11 Students’ Engagement With Responding In Visual Arts, Julia Elizabeth Morris Jan 2015

Assessing Western Australian Year 11 Students’ Engagement With Responding In Visual Arts, Julia Elizabeth Morris

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Responding to visual arts is an important outcome of both the Western Australian and the Australian (F-10) Curriculum in Visual Arts (ACARA, 2014; Curriculum Council, 2008; School Standards and Curriculum Authority, 2014a). Responding is important because it facilitates students’ development of visual literacy, or the ability to decode and recode meaning through visual media (Flood, 2004; Flood & Bamford, 2007; Avgerinou & Petterson, 2011). This mixed methods research study investigated Western Australian students’ engagement in responding within Year 11 Stage 2 Visual Arts. A diagnostic instrument was created to quantitatively assess the engagement of 137 Year 11 Visual Arts students. …

Sexuality, Desire And The Ageing Female Body: An Essay, Lauren Marsh Jan 2015

Sexuality, Desire And The Ageing Female Body: An Essay, Lauren Marsh

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis consists of a novella, ‘One Night in Hong Kong’, and an essay, ‘Sexuality, Desire and the Ageing Female Body.’ The novella tells the story of an erotic affair between the female narrator and a man in a hotel room in the neon city of Hong Kong. Told in four parts, the story shifts in time, reflecting on earlier events in the narrator’s life and a trip she made to the Sicilian city of Catania in 1954.

Older female protagonists and their sexuality are rarely depicted in contemporary Australian fiction. Where representations do exist, they act as ‘interventionist’ texts, …
