The Use Of Oral History And Narrative Research In Broadening The Historical Foundation Of The Agricultural Communication Field, Natalie L Federer Jan 2015

The Use Of Oral History And Narrative Research In Broadening The Historical Foundation Of The Agricultural Communication Field, Natalie L Federer

Open Access Dissertations

The historical foundation of the agricultural communication community (consisting of both academics and the profession) is shallow and void of humanistic perspective, and there is a minimal amount of historical content that focuses on academic and professional history. The need to explore and interpret historical dimensions of this field is vital to further development of the discipline as an academic and professional field. Oral history was utilized to capture and preserve the interview content from a small sample of agricultural communication and Extension professionals and faculty while narrative research, interpretative theory, and constructivism were utilized to further understand and interpret …

Anticancer Effects Of Vitamin E Forms And Their Long-Chain Metabolites Via Modulation Of Sphingolipid Metabolism, Yumi Jang Jan 2015

Anticancer Effects Of Vitamin E Forms And Their Long-Chain Metabolites Via Modulation Of Sphingolipid Metabolism, Yumi Jang

Open Access Dissertations

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death. Studies have shown that vitamin E forms including gamma-tocopherol (γT), delta-tocopherol (δT), and gamma-tocotrienol (γTE) exhibited potent anticancer activities in various types of cancer cells. But molecular mechanisms underlying anticancer actions of γTE are not completely understood. 13’-carboxychromanols (13’-COOHs), major fecal excreted long-chain metabolites of vitamin E, have recently been shown to induce apoptosis in liver cancer cells. However, it is not clear whether 13’-COOHs have anticancer effects on other types of cancer. In the current study, we investigated the anticancer effects and mechanisms of γTE and 13’-COOHs; δT-13’-COOH and δTE-13’-COOH, …

Shaved Or Saved? Disciplining Women’S Bodies, Casey R. Kelly, Kristen Hoerl Jan 2015

Shaved Or Saved? Disciplining Women’S Bodies, Casey R. Kelly, Kristen Hoerl

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

Proponents of sexual liberation and abstinence-until-marriage advocates appear to be on opposing ends of the sociopolitical spectrum; however, both are invested in the regulation of women’s vaginas. We argue that the rhetoric of both communities produces the same disciplinary configuration for the control of women’s bodies. Both communities instruct women that the appearance of a prepubescent and pure vagina is essential to sexual appeal and self-care. Whether sex positive or sex negative, both communities articulate a model of sexual health that negates women’s status as active, desiring subjects. Ultimately, we argue that public scrutiny of women’s vaginas implicitly and overtly …

A Cross-Cultural Qualitative Study: The Differences In Attitudes And Opinions On Advance Care Planning Among African, Caucasian, And Latino Americans, Jennifer Sims

International ResearchScape Journal

The purpose of this study is to identify African American and Latino Americans’ beliefs and attitudes about advance care planning (ACP) and compare these with beliefs held by Caucasian Americans. The objectives are to identify if there are differences in opinions between racial groups and to provide relevant information for health and social service providers. African American and Latino American participants in this study indicated many factors that affect their hesitation to utilize ACP services: spiritual and religious beliefs; family caregiving; and lack of knowledge about ACP services. Implications for practice include providing easy-to-understand information about ACP to clients of …

Issue Introduction: Reconsidering Gender, Genre, And Race In Broadcast Radio And Television, Mary Desjardins, Mary Beth Haralovich Jan 2015

Issue Introduction: Reconsidering Gender, Genre, And Race In Broadcast Radio And Television, Mary Desjardins, Mary Beth Haralovich

The Journal of e-Media Studies

This special issue of Journal of e-Media Studies is focused on historical trends, shifts, and transformations in past and present broadcast television and radio, as understood through the categories of genre, gender, and race. At a time when both scholarly and industry-related discourses increasingly focus on the significance of “television after TV,” convergence and multi-media, multi-platform technologies, and “narrowcasting,” it is still important to examine American broadcast television and radio, which still reaches the largest audience and has contributed to and reflected social understandings of gender and race in America for almost a century.

The Combined Effect Of Individualism – Collectivism On Conflict Styles And Satisfaction: An Analysis At The Individual Level, Regina Kim, Peter T. Coleman Jan 2015

The Combined Effect Of Individualism – Collectivism On Conflict Styles And Satisfaction: An Analysis At The Individual Level, Regina Kim, Peter T. Coleman

Peace and Conflict Studies

This research examines the relationships among individualism-collectivism (IND-COL), conflict management styles and conflict satisfaction. The authors aim to explain some of the inconclusive findings in the literature related to IND-COL and conflict styles by studying IND-COL as states, rather than dispositional traits. By taking a dynamic approach to conceptualizing IND-COL and measuring IND-COL over time, we investigate how different ratios of individualistic-to-collectivistic orientations are associated with different conflict management styles. Results show that individuals who employed a balanced focus (1:1 ratio) of both individualistic and collectivistic orientations utilized an integrative style in conflict more than individuals with either …

Ethical Maturity Scores Of Future Arab Business Leaders Based On Gender, Age, Seniority, Management, And Ethics Training, Abdul R. Abu Bakar, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba, Ahmed Medjedel

HCBE Faculty Articles

The financial collapse of many prominent institutions over the past six years has highlighted the importance of morality and ethics in the workplace. Recent evidence has demonstrated that ethics is an important topic for all working adults and students who will soon join the workforce. As such, using the personal business ethics scores (PBES) survey, this study tests 164 students' demographic profiles and ‘ethical exposure' in Saudi Arabia. Using factor analysis, analysis of variance, and regression analysis with the sample data, this study highlights a statistically significant relationship between legal knowledge and ethical maturity among Arabs in this research. Other …

Dancing Literacy: Expanding Children’S And Teachers’ Literacy Repertoires Through Embodied Knowing, Allison Leonard, Anna H. Hall, Danielle Herro Jan 2015

Dancing Literacy: Expanding Children’S And Teachers’ Literacy Repertoires Through Embodied Knowing, Allison Leonard, Anna H. Hall, Danielle Herro

Publications

This paper explores dance as literacy. Specifically, it examines qualitative case study research findings and student examples from a dance artist-in-residence that explored curricular content using dance as its primary mode of inquiry and expression. Throughout the residency, students constructed meaning through their dance experiences in dynamic and autonomous ways, exhibiting complex literacy practices of inquiry and communication. Focusing on the kindergarten student participants’ experiences, the authors highlight three themes in their dance literacy practices: (a) artistic autonomy, (b) embodied knowledge, and (c) multimodality. As embodied knowledge, dance innately allowed for integrative literacy possibilities in the dance residency. The dance …

Emotions In Teaching Environmental Education, Cassie F. Quigley Jan 2015

Emotions In Teaching Environmental Education, Cassie F. Quigley

Publications

This op-ed article examines the emotional impact of teaching environmental science and considers how certain emotions can broaden viewpoints and other emotions narrow them. Specifically, it investigates how the topic of climate change became an emotional debate in a science classroom because of religious beliefs. Through reflective practice and examination of positionality, the author explored how certain teaching practices of pre-service science teachers created a productive space and other practices closed down the conversations. This article is framed with theories that explore both divergent and shared viewpoints.

On Dialectics And Human Decency: Education In The Dock, Peter Mclaren Jan 2015

On Dialectics And Human Decency: Education In The Dock, Peter Mclaren

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Set against the backdrop of the contemporary crisis of capitalism and world-historical events, this article examines the advance of globalized imperialism from the perspective of a Marxist-humanist approach to pedagogy known as ‘revolutionary critical pedagogy’ enriched by liberation theology. It is written as an epistolic manifesto to the transnational capitalist class, demanding that those who willingly serve its interests reconsider their allegiance and calling for a planetary revolution in the way that we both think about capitalism and how education and religion serves to reproduce it at the peril of both students and humanity as a whole.

Safety Climate And Safety Outcomes In Aircraft Maintenance: A Mediating Effect Of Employee Turnover And Safety Motivation, Muhanna Alnoaimi Jan 2015

Safety Climate And Safety Outcomes In Aircraft Maintenance: A Mediating Effect Of Employee Turnover And Safety Motivation, Muhanna Alnoaimi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aircraft maintenance is viewed as a critical safety component in general and military aviation industries, and thus it is crucial to identify the factors that may affect aircraft maintenance. Because the safety climate is considered as a leading indicator of safety performance and safety outcomes, this study utilized this safety climate approach to develop a model which can explain the relationships between employee turnover, safety motivation, self-reported unsafe acts, reporting unsafe behaviors, incidents, and injuries in the aviation maintenance environment. This study included a sample of 283 technicians in military aircraft maintenance units who participated in a cross-sectional random survey. …

Exoticism, Cultural Hybridity, And Subaltern Identity In Three Macanese Novels, Jose I. Suarez Jan 2015

Exoticism, Cultural Hybridity, And Subaltern Identity In Three Macanese Novels, Jose I. Suarez

Hispanic Studies Faculty Publications

Although the novels of Austin Coates, Henrique de Senna Fernandes, and Rodrigo Leal de Carvalho’s depict life in the former Portuguese colony of Macau, their individual perspectives reflect a contrast between literary colonialism and coloniality. A British public servant, Coates perceives Macanese reality through the competing biased eyes of an Englishman resenting Portuguese culture and administration in the colony; Leal de Carvalho, a Portuguese resident of Macau, romantically depicts the social nature of Portuguese colonialism; Senna Fernandes, a native Macanese educated in Portugal, offers his interpretation of the colony’s Eurasian inhabitants vis-à-vis its Chinese population. The aim of this article …

Mobile Media: From Legato To Staccato, Isochronal Consumptionscapes, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Ian Reyes, Jennifer Bonoff

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Mobile devices in the form of smartphones are transforming the temporality of consumption experiences, from languid and legato forms to isochronal and staccato forms. New communication technologies accelerate as well as alter mobile consumptionscapes. Rather than attempting to capture the elusive here-and-now essence of such fast-changing scenes, this essay invokes three historical episodes of technology and mobility – the transistor radio, the Walkman-style cassette device, and the MP3 player – to uncover the patterns that enhanced levels of mobility bring to the media consumption experience. In particular, by illuminating matters of time, some temporal framings are offered as correctives to …

The Impact Of Autobiographical And Vicarious Events On Narrative Identity, Kendall Michelle Soucie Jan 2015

The Impact Of Autobiographical And Vicarious Events On Narrative Identity, Kendall Michelle Soucie

Wayne State University Dissertations

The primary aim of this dissertation was to elucidate the process by which we incorporate the life events of others (vicarious events) into our own lives and, by extension, into our own sense of identity. It was hypothesized that vicarious events from within a person's social network can be as germane to identity development as autobiographical events if the vicarious event involves someone with whom the person is socially-close rather than socially-distant and is an event in which the self was more proximal (shared events) than distal (witnessed or hearsay). The extent to which age, gender, dispositional empathy, and the …

What Is The Nature Of Appalachian Identity?, Elizabeth Trout Jan 2015

What Is The Nature Of Appalachian Identity?, Elizabeth Trout

Communication Studies Student Scholarship

Personal identity affects the way one views themselves, and the world around them. This in turn affects the way that they interact with others, and how they communicate. The Appalachian region in the United States impresses on its people a strong, undeniable identity that sets them apart from others. This identity is influenced by region and sense of place, race and language. The Appalachian identity is unique and complex in nature.
