Mark Twain, James Thurber, And David Sedaris: American Literary Humorists, Liz Sills
Mark Twain, James Thurber, And David Sedaris: American Literary Humorists, Liz Sills
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This analysis probes the unique nature of the American Literary Humorist by looking at three exemplary cases of this type of figure: Mark Twain, James Thurber, and David Sedaris. Rather than dissecting their works to the point that they become unfunny, this piece examines their interaction with the times and publics that form their audiences. Doing so allows us to better understand their resonance both during their own times and today and gives us a better look at what really makes them stand out in the history of American letters.

Geography
The biogeochemical seascape of the western Arctic coastal ocean is in rapid transition. Changes in sea ice cover will be accompanied by alterations in sea-air carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange, of which the latter has been difficult to constrain owing to sparse temporal and spatial data sets. Previous assessments of sea-air CO2 flux have targeted specific subregional areas of the western Arctic coastal ocean. Here a holistic approach is taken to determine the net sea-air CO2 flux over this broad region. We compiled and analyzed an extensive data set of nearly 600,000 surface seawater CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) measurements spanning 2003 …
The Agronomic Use And Application Of Canopy Reflectance Within The Visible And Near-Infrared Wavebands And Its Relation With Nitrogen Fertilization In Energy Cane Production In Louisiana, Saoli Chanda
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Spectral vegetation index-based models that are used to estimate yield potential are commonly developed from the relationship between early-season crop canopy reflectance readings and actual yield obtained at harvest. Plant population stand can influence cane yield potential and nutrient requirement. This study was conducted at LSU AgCenter Sugar Research Station in St. Gabriel, LA to evaluate (1) the relation between estimated early season biomass yield and the spectral vegetation indices acquired at the same time, (2) nitrogen (N) response pattern between early-season biomass production and yield at harvest, and (3) the relationship between coefficient of variation (CV) among normalized difference …
An Analysis Of Spelling Patterns Produced By Elementary School-Aged Speakers Of African American English, Lindsay Meyer Turner
An Analysis Of Spelling Patterns Produced By Elementary School-Aged Speakers Of African American English, Lindsay Meyer Turner
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Over the years, less attention is given to students’ spelling skills compared to other areas of literacy achievement like word reading and passage comprehension in relationship to nonmainstream dialect usage. Considering that English spelling is based on the phonological and morphological structures of Mainstream American English (MAE), it is likely that children who speak a nonmainstream dialect such as African American English (AAE) will demonstrate differences in their spelling abilities. The purposes of this study were to explore the relationship between degree of AAE dialect use and spelling for a group of first to third grade children, and to describe …

We have noted over the years that students do not seem to engage with feedback as much as we …
Defining Competence In Obstetric Epidural Anaesthesia For Inexperienced Trainees, E. J. Drake, J. Coghill, J. R. Sneyd
Defining Competence In Obstetric Epidural Anaesthesia For Inexperienced Trainees, E. J. Drake, J. Coghill, J. R. Sneyd
Peninsula Medical School
Background: Cumulative sum (CUSUM) analysis has been used for assessing competence of trainees learning new technical skills. One of its disadvantages is the required definition of acceptable and unacceptable success rates. We therefore monitored the development of competence amongst trainees new to obstetric epidural anaesthesia in a large public hospital. Methods: Obstetric epidural data were collected prospectively between January 1996 and December 2011. Success rates for inexperienced trainees were calculated retrospectively for (1) the whole database, (2) for each consecutive attempt and (3) each trainee's individual overall success rate. Acceptable and unacceptable success rates were defined and CUSUM graphs generated …

Serotonin Stimulates Secretion Of Exosomes From Microglia Cells, K Glebov, M Löchner, R Jabs, T Lau, O Merkel, P Schloss, C Steinhäuser, J Walter
Peninsula Medical School
Microglia are resident immune cells in the brain and exert important functions in the regulation of inflammatory processes during infection or cellular damage. Upon activation, microglia undergo complex morphological and functional transitions, including increased motility, phagocytosis and cytokine secretion. Recent findings indicate that exosomes, small vesicles that derive from fusion of multivesicular bodies with the plasma membrane, are involved in secretion of certain cytokines. The presence of specific receptors on the surface of microglia suggests communication with neurons by neurotransmitters. Here, we demonstrate expression of serotonin receptors, including 5‐HT2a,b and 5‐HT4 in microglial cells and their functional involvement in the …

Using Campinas- Barcode’S Cultural Competency Model And Roach's Model Of Caring To Enhance Self-Perception Of Cultural Competence And Perceived Knowledge Of Caring Among Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, And Community Nurses., Alicia Bannis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
As the culturally diverse healthcare population in the United States rises, the demand for healthcare providers who are knowledgeable in providing culturally competent care increases. Community health care providers are mandated to make cultural competence a priority in their clinical practice. This mandate challenges healthcare professionals to increase their knowledge of cultural diversity and caring behaviors and provide appropriate health care services to meet the needs of racially and ethnically diverse clients. For this project, an assessment of community healthcare providers’ self-perception of cultural competence and perceived knowledge of caring behaviors was untaken while posing the question: “How does a …

The aim of this study was to assess knowledge, attitude and clinical practice among Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) in preventive care for immunocompromised patients and educating APNs to improve their knowledge and practice skills using an evidence-based preventive care protocol. Methods: APN members of Illinois Society of Advanced Practice Nurses (ISAPN) organization were surveyed by a needs assessment …
Conditionality As Opposed To Inseverability, Tom Campbell
Conditionality As Opposed To Inseverability, Tom Campbell
Emory Law Journal Online
Eric Fish has given us a most engaging defense of a proposal to allow severability of statutes in almost all cases. In comparison with the current Supreme Court standard, Fish argues that he does not have courts engage in the difficult task of interpreting congressional intent. Instead, he would allow severability as the default, with only very limited exceptions where the legislative branch has indicated inseverability. Of course, the best way to prevent judges from acting as legislators is to prevent them from treating something that was not passed by the legislature as law. The only way to do that, …
Redefining Prey And Predator In Class Actions, Christine P. Bartholomew
Redefining Prey And Predator In Class Actions, Christine P. Bartholomew
Journal Articles
Aggregate litigation’s potential as a tool for the disempowered is not being realized. Class actions have come under serious attack in the last decade as critics have successfully worked to change traditional notions of victimhood. The leading narrative identifies big businesses as the vulnerable prey needing protection from large class claims and the greedy class actions attorneys who bring them. Relying on this narrative, courts and Congress have made class actions harder to pursue, from filing and class certification to settlement approval.
Vulnerability theory offers an alternative framework to rehabilitate class actions. From this perspective, the legal system currently disadvantages …
Adequate Disclosures In 140 Characters Or Less-Analysis Of How Endorsers Should Approach Advertising On A Platform With Character Limitations, Jacob Hughey
Emory Business Law Review
Social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook have transformed the way businesses and individuals market their products and services. These websites have given advertisers and promoters the ability to advertise directly to consumers who would most likely be interested in their product or service. However, advertising on social media can also bring an increased risk of consumer deception. As a result, several federal agencies have published guidance on how companies should proceed with advertising on social media sites and have been monitoring how companies advertise on character-limited platforms. For example, the FDA recently issued a warning to the makers …
Government By Contract: Considering A Public Service Ethics To Match The Reality Of The "Blended" Public Work Force, Dan Guttman
Government By Contract: Considering A Public Service Ethics To Match The Reality Of The "Blended" Public Work Force, Dan Guttman
Emory Business Law Review
The Iraq War brought to public attention the reality that much of the basic work of government is done by contractors, and that the government's ability to account for its contractors cannot be taken for granted. What, for example, if the rules that protect us against official abuse are not applied to those who, in fact, increasingly do the government's work? What if, for example, the presumption that officials have the capacity to oversee contractors runs against the reality that they do not and, indeed, that the work of contractor management is itself often contracted out? What should we do …
The Changing Landscape Of Trademark Law In Tinseltown: From Debbie Does Dallas To The Hangover, John Tehranian, Mark Bartholomew
The Changing Landscape Of Trademark Law In Tinseltown: From Debbie Does Dallas To The Hangover, John Tehranian, Mark Bartholomew
Contributions to Books
This Essay, a chapter published in the book Hollywood and the Law (Palgrave Macmillan / British Film Institute, 2015), explores how courts have sought to balance the competing interests at stake when filmmakers make unauthorized uses of trademarks in their work and brand owners threaten liability for infringement. Using the seminal Rogers v. Grimaldi decision as a key pivot point, the Essay traces the remarkable change in approaches that courts have taken to First Amendment defenses in trademark cases in the past few decades. In presenting case studies of two opinions -- Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, Inc. v. Pussycat Cinema, Ltd. …

The Behavioral, Emotional, And Attentional Effects Of Human Baby Schema, Karin Machluf
The Behavioral, Emotional, And Attentional Effects Of Human Baby Schema, Karin Machluf
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Children exhibit neotenous, or physically immature, features, such as a large rounded head relative to body size, adult-sized eyes, round cheeks, a small chin, and a short narrow nose. Bowlby (1969) and others (Eibl-Eibesfeldt, 1989; Hrdy, 2005) propose that, in species whose young depend on care from an adult, these features could enhance offspring survival. Lorenz (1943) argued that adult humans are particularly attracted to these features, and that these characteristics, which he termed Kindchenschema or “baby schema,” trigger a cognitive system that processes and reacts specifically to infantile features for the purpose of enhancing motivation to engage in caretaking …

The Ascidian Styela Plicata As A Potential Bioremediator Of The Brown Tide Pelagophytes Aureoumbra Lagunensis And Aureococcus Anophagefferens, Phyllis A. Klarmann
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
A brown tide bloom of the pelagophyte Aureoumbra lagunensis caused significant impacts to north Indian River Lagoon (IRL) in 2012-2013, including seagrass die-offs, fish kills, and reduced growth and grazing of ecologically important bivalves. There is potential for another pelagophyte, Aureococcus anophagefferens, to expand into this system. Filtration rates (FR) of the pleated tunicate Styela plicata exposed to Aureoumbra lagunensis and Aureococcus anophagefferens were measured against exposure to a control alga (Tisochrysis lutea) in order to determine its potential use as a bioremediator against these harmful algal blooms (HABs). In addition, whether S. plicata might serve as a vector of …

The results revealed …
The Carnivalesque And Grotesque Realism In Modernist Literature: The Final Novels Of Ronald Firbank And Virginia Woolf, Marlene Katherine Case
The Carnivalesque And Grotesque Realism In Modernist Literature: The Final Novels Of Ronald Firbank And Virginia Woolf, Marlene Katherine Case
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Concerning the Eccentricities of Cardinal Pirelli by Ronald Firbank and Between the Acts by Virginia Woolf both liberate the text from the expected form to engage emotional awareness and instigate reform of societal standards. Employing Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of the carnivalesque and grotesque realism as a means to create this perspective is unconventional; nevertheless, Firbank, predominantly misunderstood, and Woolf, more regarded but largely misinterpreted, both address sexuality and religion to parody what they believe to be the retrogression of civilization by narrating christenings, pageants, and other forms of carnival. Both novels forefront nonconformity, and the conspicuous influence of debasement is …

School counselors in the treatment schools were trained in the implementation of the SSS classroom program and subsequently taught the material to Grade 5 students. Comparison school counselors conducted business as usual. The study applied a quasi-experimental pre/post1/post2 design utilizing student …
The Effectiveness Of Direct Instruction In Teaching Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders To Answer “Wh-” Questions, Jessica N. Cadette
The Effectiveness Of Direct Instruction In Teaching Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders To Answer “Wh-” Questions, Jessica N. Cadette
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Teachers of students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) often struggle to find effective instructional methods to use with their students on a daily basis. The characteristic verbal, social, and behavioral limitations of children with ASD make finding effective teaching methods difficult. Though some intensive intervention methods, such as discrete trial teaching (DTT), have numerous studies demonstrating their effectiveness with students with ASD, the required one-on-one format makes it impractical to use in a classroom setting on a regular basis. Direct Instruction (DI) appears in the literature as a promising intervention for students with developmental disabilities. One benefit of DI is …
Researching First-Year Student Learning And “Self- Directed” Revision, Linzi Schattinger
Researching First-Year Student Learning And “Self- Directed” Revision, Linzi Schattinger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis is designed to invite scholars, writers, and teachers of rhetoric and composition pedagogy to re-evaluate the revision process as a means of inspiring and supporting first-year writers to become acquainted with their “writer’s voice.” This study explores students’ resistance towards revision and argues that recognizing and developing revision habits will help students revise independently. Self-directed revision not only strengthens a writer’s ability to engage in the writing process more astutely, but it is also a fundamental component to the self-identification process from which the writer draws inspiration. This thesis is structured into four main sections: (1) Introduction, referring …
Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Of Inflow/Infiltration Reduction Techniques, Geoffrey Trent Vanallen
Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Of Inflow/Infiltration Reduction Techniques, Geoffrey Trent Vanallen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Substantial savings in operations can be achieved by reducing the amount of wastewater that must be pumped and treated. Utilities have long dealt with the infiltration and inflow (I and I) issues in their system by televising their pipes and identifying leak points, but this primarily addresses only the infiltration part of “I and I.” Inflow, which creates hydraulic issues during rain events, leads to sanitary sewer overflows and can subject the utility to fines from regulatory agencies. As a result, dealing with the inflow portion of I and I is needed. The goal of this thesis is to differentiate …
